From the Principals

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year and welcome back to Dunbar! It is hard to believe that January is here, and

we will soon be heading into February! We see such a difference in our students after the first

of the year. Not only have they physically grown, but they are learning so much and growing

academically as well.

In December, our students wore their pajamas to school on Polar Express Day. They listened to

The Polar Express story in the morning and received a visit from Santa, who gave them each

their own silver bell to mark the special day. Our Classroom Holiday Parties were a terrific way

to end the time before break. Thank you to our parent volunteers for making the parties so

enjoyable for our students.

We have many events that will be happening over the coming weeks, and of course February

will bring Classroom Valentine Parties.

We will participate in the Great Kindness Challenge by encouraging and celebrating acts of

kindness. In addition, Dunbar will be a part of the annual “Pennies for Patients” Fundraiser.

This project is organized by the National Honor Society students at the high school. We will be

collecting change for children who have Leukemia, which is the type of cancer that affects

children the most. Thank you in advance for your generous donations.

Please remember that students will go outside for recess when it is above 23 degrees. We ask

that you provide your child with a warm coat, boots, hat and gloves, so that they can go out on

days that are warm enough.

As a reminder, in the event of a 2-hour delay, buses will pick students up at their regular

bus stop 2 hours after their normal, scheduled time. For example, if a child normally catches the bus at 7:45 a.m., pick-up will be at 9:45 a.m. on days when a 2-hour delay is called. Likewise, school will start 2 hours after the normal start time. Dunbar students

will begin classes at 10:30 a.m. The lunch periods and dismissal time will remain the same on two-hour delays.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs. Courtney A. Davis

Principal

Mrs. Jamilyn Hoehn

Assistant Principal

MESSAGE FROM PTA PRESI DENT

Wow what an amazing December we had, and January is off to a great start.

Hopefully everyone had a fun winter break with family and friends. While the winter break was a nice few

weeks it was sure good to see all our Dunbar friends again.

We had some fantastic events in December. Our Holiday Parties, the return of our Holiday Shop and Polar

Express Day were among those events.

We want to send out a big thank you to everyone who helped with the Holiday parties. The games and crafts

that are thought of are amazing. The next party is our Valentine’s Day parties. Look for more information soon

from your Head Room Parent.

Polar Express Day was so much fun. Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Hoehn did such a fantastic job reading the Polar

Express story. The students listened to every word. After the story we had a visit from the big guy himself.

Santa was there to ask each student what they wanted for Christmas and give them each a bell. A special

thank you to our Elves that showed up to help Santa, Thank you Amber Headley and Nikki Watkins. Thanks to

Kelly Pifer you can view pictures from the event on our PTA Facebook page.

Lastly a huge thank you to the volunteers for all their help with the Holiday Shop and Bake Sale. To everyone

that donated all the delicious baked goods, Thank you. We had a good number of shoppers take part in the

Holiday shop. We couldn’t have done it without our Elves that came down from TMS and THS to help. A very

special Thank you to the Builders Club from TMS and the Leaders in Action from THS. These are an amazing

group of students that without their hard work we could not have had a smooth-running Holiday Shop.

With the Holidays over things will slow down for little bit and then February will be here before we know it

bringing more party fun.

Please join us for our next PTA meeting on February 4, 2019 in the Dunbar Gym at 6:00pm. This will be our first meeting in 2019.

As always, to stay up to date on everything please like us on Facebook and Follow us on Twitter or join our remind group. We also have our monthly newsletters posted to our PTA page on the school’s website.

Thank you all for a great month, Nicole Haley

Muffins for Mom’s is a new event that is

coming up March 13th, 14th and 15th. This is an event like the Father’s Walk. Keep a look out

for detailed information.

FUN FACTS

Many Animals like the

Black Bear hibernate

during the winter. What

this means is their

heartbeat slows to 8

beats a minute (the

usual is 40 beats per

minute) and the Black

Bear can go 100 days

without food.

Keep a look out on January 20th for the Total Lunar Eclipse 9:35pm est. this is when the full Moon enters the shadow of Earth.

Cold vs. flu: How to tell the difference It’s that time of year for runny noses, scratchy throats and constant sneezing. The all-too familiar cold symptoms — you can’t miss them. It’s also that time of year when flu season peaks. Though influenza activity often begins to increase in October, it peaks between December and February, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Though different viruses cause them, the flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses and share similar symptoms, so it can be difficult to tell them apart. Many parents are left wondering, does my child have the flu or a cold? In general, the flu is worse than the common cold and symptoms are more intense. In fact, the flu can cause serious complications, such as pneumonia. A big difference between the viruses is that a cold will most likely not give your child a high fever and body aches. The rate at which symptoms appear is another strong differentiating factor. Colds normally develop slowly over a few days, whereas the flu symptoms can come on suddenly. Also, severe symptoms from the flu normally subside in about 3 days, whereas cold symptoms can last 7 to 10 days.

The chart below lists typical symptoms for the flu and common cold. Taking stock of symptoms and how long they last will help you determine what’s causing your child trouble.
