Flotation Frothers Frother reagents are principally added to a flotation pulp to:
• Improve dispersion of air throughout the pulp by the formation and stabilisation of fine air bubbles and,
• Form a mineralised froth at the top of the flotation cell, producing a froth phase. A transient froth is a prerequisite for the successful transport of mineral laden bubbles from the pulp zone/froth zone interface to the concentrate launder and rejection of gangue material from the froth (i.e. returned to the pulp via froth drainage). Alcohols, alkoxy substituted paraffins and polyglycols are the three basic chemical groups that dominate in frother selection and their application. Methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) is the best known example of alcohol
frother used in froth flotation. The alkoxy substituted paraffin type frothers, of which triethoxy butane (TEB) is the main frother in use, can be loosely associated with the polyglycol ethers on the basis of both structure and performance. The Huntsman Performance Products flotation frothers are inclusive of low molecular weight alcohol based frothers and polyglycol ethers formed from condensation of alkylene oxides with lower alcohols. Each group provides particular characteristics which affect load support, bubble diameter, water retention and drainage, air dispersion, and froth formation kinetics. POLYFROTH® Frother Series Product Range Huntsman Performance Products has successfully developed the POLYFROTH® range of frothers for froth flotation. The POLYFROTH® frother series aims to deliver the full spectrum of frother properties and strengths required in mineral and coal flotation applications, and has been the result of the evaluation of both common and novel chemical compounds in laboratory and pilot flotation tests and extensive plant trials around the globe. Huntsman’s range of flotation frothers includes alcohols, glycol ethers and blends, polyglycols, and blends of proprietary chemicals, and covers the full range of requirements, from low strength for selective flotation through to high strength for coarse particle recovery. They range from the POLYFROTH® 50 series of frothers which are recognised as strong frothers, to the POLYFROTH® 30 series which are intermediate strength frothers, to the POLYFROTH® 20 series which are low to moderate strength frothers, through to the POLYFROTH® 10 frother series which is the weakest and most selective of the range. This unique range of frothing properties and selectivity is what gives the different Huntsman POLYFROTH® frothers their application and performance benefits in all mineral sectors of the mining industry, including base metal sulphides, precious metals (gold, silver, PGEs), industrial minerals, coal and various other non-sulphides.

POLYFROTH® Frother Series Product Characteristics The Huntsman Frother Selection Guide found on page 8 has further details on the POLYFROTH® frother range. Principal product characteristics are described below:
POLYFROTH® 10’s frother series
POLYFROTH® 20’s frother series
POLYFROTH® 30’s frother series
POLYFROTH® 50’s frother series
Low Strength Low to Moderate Strength
Intermediate to High Strength
Highest Strength
POLYFROTH® H17 frother, POLYFROTH® H15 frother and POLYFROTH® H14 frother are among the weakest, and most selective of the frothers in the series, and comparable to MIBC.
Intermediate froth strengths and a good balance between strength, hydrophobicity and kinetics are afforded by POLYFROTH® H30, POLYFROTH® H27 and POLYFROTH® H29 frothers. POLYFROTH® H27
frother and POLYFROTH® H30 frother are hydrophobic and give a boost in the flotation froth kinetics with generally higher froth concentrate carry-over (mass pull). POLYFROTH® W22
frother and POLYFROTH® H23 frother are lower strength, highly selective frothers, comparable to methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) and other low molecular weight alcohol-based frothers. POLYFROTH® W22 has
been specifically designed as a high flash point alternative to MIBC and is available for use at a reduced dose rate than that typical of MIBC.
POLYFROTH® W31 frother is a polyglycol ether frother that is an established industry alternative to the Dowfroth™ 250C flotation frother. It produces relatively mobile and freely draining froths of intermediate strength. It offers a combination of selectivity, froth stability and moderate kinetics, and is therefore generally used in for a wide range of flotation applications. POLYFROTH® W34
frother is an intermediate to high-strength frother with solution characteristics similar to those of POLYFROTH®W31 frother. It produces froths of well-defined structure and bubble size and is available for applications requiring intermediate froth stability and good froth depth control.
POLYFROTH® H57 frother is among the strongest, most hydrophobic in the series and offers good kinetics. POLYFROTH® W55
frother and POLYFROTH® W53 frother are also strong and efficient frothers, but less selective in use. POLYFROTH® W55
frother and POLYFROTH® H57 frother usually results in reduced dosage and better froth control than other alternative strong alcohol/polyglycol ether blends.

POLYFROTH® Frother Series Properties
This unique range of frothing properties and selectivity is what gives the different Huntsman POLYFROTH® frothers their application and performance benefits in a wide range of flotation situations.
As a group the POLYFROTH® frothers offer high metallurgical grades with low water carry-over into the concentrate. The POLYFROTH® frothers are typically easily dispersible in water and have low volatility that gives very good froth efficiency. They have a low level of toxicity and odour, lower VOC (Volatile Organic Carbon) emissions and most are non-flammable. The greater froth persistence, together with higher water solubility of selected frothers in the POLYFROTH® frother product series, can offer the option of a simpler single point addition. Client experience has shown dose rates that are typically less than those for other alcohol- and glycol ether-based frother blends.
Our frothers aim to provide improved safety, health and environmental outcomes resulting in lower compliance costs associated with their transportation, storage, handling and use.

Huntsman Performance Products Frothers and Carbon Fouling It is well known that many chemical reagents may reduce the activity of activated carbon used in gold recovery operations employing carbon in leach (CIL) and carbon in pulp (CIP) processes. These reagents include collectors, frothers, oils and many other commonly used activators and depressants. Several independent studies into the extent of fouling on active carbon exposed to a number of Huntsman Performance Product’s frothers in typical mine process water, and subsequent recovery of activity after thermal regeneration (Study 2), have been conducted with the results summarised below.

These studies have shown that only a small loss in carbon activity due to frother adsorption occurs, that can be readily recovered by normal carbon regeneration techniques. Thermal regeneration of fouled carbon samples returns carbon activity to greater than 100% (Study 2), indicating that appropriate selection of regeneration conditions can completely remove any absorbed frother and return the carbon to full activity. The conditions of regeneration used during this test were ideal, and it is unlikely that plant regeneration will produce material with this level of activity. However, optimisation of the plant regeneration conditions will maximise the removal of organic foulants such as frothers. Thermal gravimetric analysis work has shown that glycol based frothers, including products from the POLYFROTH® frother range, are removed from carbon active sites at temperatures between 200 - 600°C. In addition, there is no evidence of organic residues remaining on the carbon surface after regeneration nor any evidence to indicate a cumulative fouling effect due to successive exposure/regeneration cycles. The conclusion is that any resultant loss in carbon activity due to frother adsorption can be readily recovered by normal carbon regeneration techniques. Competition for carbon active sites by frother can be reduced by careful selection of the correct frother. An efficient frother that performs at lower dose rates and reports to the flotation concentrate will minimise frother contact with the carbon and thus reduce the effects of carbon fouling.

Other Frother Product Information
Handling and Storage The Huntsman Performance Products frother range can be supplied in drums, IBC schutz boxes (totes) and as bulk isotanks. With the exception of POLYFROTH® H20, POLYFROTH® W22 and POLYFROTH® H27 frothers, all Huntsman frother products are essentially anhydrous and are not corrosive to common metals. They can be stored in mild steel or stainless steel tanks (316 and 304 stainless steel). POLYFROTH® H20, POLYFROTH® W22 and POLYFROTH® H27 frothers should only be stored in stainless steel tanks (316 and 304 stainless steel) or epoxy lined mild steel containers. Unlined mild steel tanks and transfer lines should be avoided. Materials Compatibility Wire reinforced polypropylene is the preferred material for hoses. Compressed asbestos fibre (CAF) is satisfactory for pipework gaskets, and butyl elastomers and TEFLON® polymer (PTFE) are recommended for seals and valve seats. Copper and its alloys, including brass, may cause some discolouration of the products. Product Integrity Maximum effective storage life will be achieved by storing products in sealed containers indoors, away from sunlight and heat sources. Because Huntsman Performance Products cannot control the storage and use conditions of its products, it is not possible to prescribe absolute shelf life. However, as a guide it is recommended that products in storage be checked against published sales specifications after 2 years. Environmental Profile All Huntsman frothers have a low level of volatility, toxicity and odour and are non-flammable. They are not classified as dangerous goods for transport by road, rail, air or sea.
Biodegradability of Huntsman Flotation Reagents
Biodegradability Huntsman Performance Products has commissioned biodegradability tests on a range of surfactants from which it is possible to infer the biodegradability of the POLYFROTH®, TERIC® and UNIFROTH® flotation reagents (frothers) included in this brochure. From these studies and from Huntsman Performance Products operational experience, it is estimated that Huntsman flotation frother products will not persist indefinitely in the environment.
