He could also not confirm whether the murders were an act of retaliation. Khan was killed on the evening of Monday 14 March in 11th Avenue, Retreat. Damian Malan was the second person killed this past week. Malan was shot in Lavender Hill on Tuesday 15 March. Traut would not confirm where exactly he was gunned down. The latest victim of the gang war, Thurlong Rudolph, was killed in Steenberg on Wednesday night. Traut said the victims were shot several times but could not say exactly how many times. “We do not want to sensationalise the shoot- ings,” said Traut. “We want to sensationalise the arrests that were made by the police,” he told People’s Post. Both Khan and Rudolph were killed beyond the borders of Lavender Hill, sparking fears that the violence had spread to neighbouring areas of Retreat and Steenberg. Kevin Southgate, chairman of the Steenberg Community Police Forum, says the gang war has definitely spread out to neighbouring areas. Southgate said all of the murders could be linked to two warring gangs. “We are very concerned that the violence is spreading to Retreat,” said Southgate. “We had shootings in Retreat and Steenberg. The thing is that the prevalent gangs in the area are the Junky Funky Kids and the Corner Boys, and all these shootings are related to these gangs.” Southgate added that the police’s belief that the shootings were gang related, combined with his knowledge of the area and the community, meant he was certain that the incident was re- lated to the ongoing gang war in Lavender Hill. “Judging by the fact that the police have indicated that it is gang related and the comments from the local community, I am quite sure that they are related and related to the two gangs.” The latest deaths brings the to- tal number of fatalities in the Lavender Hill gang war to six in March alone. Shaquille Jacobs (15), Dale Jor- daan (15) and Sergio Domingo (21) lost their lives during a gang shooting on 11 March. They were believed to be innocent bystand- ers. All three were killed in a drive- by shooting that was believe to be a retaliation attack on the Corner Boys by the Junky Funky Kids. The Junky Funky Kids and the Corner boys have been at war since early 2010 and several peo- ple have been killed since then. In May last year three men were killed at a party in Overcome Heights. Alleged Corner Boy Ganief Sonday was killed while sitting in his car in front of his Overcome Heights home on Saturday 21 August. During September, John-Ross Isaacs (18), who is suspected by his family to have joined a local gang shortly before his death, was killed in a shootout between the police, the Junky Funky Kids and the Corner Boys. Violence spread outside of Lavender Hill on Thursday 11 March 2009 when Trevor Hay- dricks (43) and Tersia du Plooy (19) were killed outside Haydrick’s home. Haydricks is said to have been a shebeen own- er in Sixth Avenue, Retreat Community workers and residents all say the dispute between the gangs is about turf – where the gangs can recruit new members and sell drugs. Both Domingo and Jordaan were laid to rest this past week at the Klip Road Cemetery. Domingo’s service was held at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Retreat Road. At the funeral, Domingo’s mother, Portia, said her son was not a gangster and she didn't understand why he was killed. “I feel empty. He was my youngest son. No one can understand how I feel,” said Portia Domin- go. “They took everything away from us. He didn’t live like that so why should he have to die like that? So many innocent people are get- ting killed like this. Things like this shouldn’t be happening around us.” William Domingo, 25, Sergio’s older brother, was the first to see Sergio’s body after he was shot and said that he doesn’t feel safe in Laven- der Hill any more. “I can’t feel safe in the area any more. Because anyone who knows a gangster or lives near a gangster is in danger,” said William. “And there are a lot of gangsters living all around us. The way things are now, we’ll have to keep looking over our shoulders. The rival gangsters aren’t really targeting each other. They just want to make a point.” Jordaan’s funeral service was held at the Re- treat AME church in 9th Avenue, Retreat. Both Jordaan and Domingo played soccer for clubs which are part of the South Peninsula Football Association (SPFA). And the SPFA, together with the Cape Town office of the South African Football Association (SAFA), helped to fund the funerals and provide logistical support. Vernon Seymour, spokesperson for the SPFA, said the league felt it was necessary to help the victim’s families in some way. “We take the position that any member of our association is part of the football family,” said Seymour. “Therefore, the football family has a moral obligation to provide support, be it finan- cial or otherwise. We did in the past for other members.” Seymour added that the SPFA and SAFA had approached the City of Cape Town and the West- ern Cape governments to set up a trust fund for Jordaan’s mother. “Lavender Hill is an area where wewanted to deploy more staff, so we as-signed that unit to the area,” said Faro.

“How long they stay in the area de-pends on the crime threat analysis andwhat we feel. They will stay as long as wefeel they are needed. We will obviouslymonitor the situation.”

The shooting on Friday 11 March isthought to have been a revenge attack onthe Corner Boys by the Junky FunkyKids. Apart from the three people killed, seven others were injured in the sameshooting.

Since then, three others have beenkilled and at least two others injured inshootings in Retreat, Steenberg and La-vender Hill (see Page 1 for more).

“The person said that if we go to thehouse now we’ll find people packagingdrugs. The officers went to the house and

knocked at thedoor. The per-son inside, whohad the drugs, saw who it wasand ranthrough the

Murdered teen’sfamily finds closureLIAM MOSES

THE FAMILY of murdered Retreat teen-ager, Moneba Kruger, can finally moveon with their lives after her murderer fa-ther was sentenced to life in prison lastweek.

Moneba was 13 years old when her father,Rashaad Kruger, slit her throat in the bed-room of their Walton Road home in Retreatthree years ago.

Moneba’s mother, Nadia Kruger, who dis-covered her daughter’s body, said that shecan finally move on with her life now thather ex-husband has been sentenced.

“I’m feeling much better. My life has start-ed again,” said Nadia.

“It’s like I’m born again. All the dirty workthat I had to do is done. I must look forwardto spending time with my other childrennow. Moneba can rest in peace now that hehas been sentenced.”

Rashaad’s life sentence was delivered inthe Western Cape High Court on Tuesday 15March, only eight days before his daughterwould have turned 17 – on 23 March – andalmost three years after she was murdered.

Moneba was alone with her disabled auntand her father on Thursday 20 March 2008whenhe slit her throat, lockedher in thebed-room and left her to die.

Her mother discovered her body when shecame home from work at around 17:00 thatday.

Shehadnoticed that thebedroomdoorwaslocked. “I broke the door open and saw heron the floor. I started screaming ‘My childis dead!’ because I saw her lying in a poolof blood.”

Rashaad was out on parole in connectionwith a rape sentence that he had been serv-ing in Pollsmoor Prison 14 months beforecommitting the murder. At the time, he wasalso out on bail after attempting to rape Mon-eba’s 17-year-old friend at knife-point in thebathroom of the family’s home.

Nadia and Moneba’s brothers say their fa-ther had been very close with his daughter.

Igshaan (28) says that he couldn’t under-stand why his father killed Moneba. “Theywere close. When he went somewhere thenshe would go with him.”

“I don’t understand why he killed her ei-ther,” said Rashaad junior.

However, Nadia is certain about her ex-husband’s motive.

“He was close to Moneba and they spenta lot of time together. The reason he did itis because she turned State witness in therape case made by her friend.”

All of the family say they have forgivenRashaad, but that they will never be able tohave a relationship with him again.

Cheryl Walters, Director forPlanning and Building Development Man-agement for the City, said the applicationwas for the rezoning of the land from “Un-determined” to “Sub-divisional Area”, inorder to permit residential development, public open spaces and roads.

The site is earmarked for 225 houses, twopublic open spaces and roads in the area. She added that the application also soughtapproval of street names. The R22.5 millionproject will give families living in the in-formal settlements of Cuba Heights andRondevlei, as well as families longest onthe city’s waiting list from Lavender Hilland Vrygrond, the opportunity to qualifyfor housing.

According to ward councillor Basil Lee,the developers, Tim Spencer Town Plan-ning, first applied in 2000 but the applica-tion lapsed.

“This project is long overdue in the area, especially for those who have been on thewaiting list for a long time,” says Lee.

However, theplanning continued, whichallowed the developer to produce the pro-posed plans for the residential develop-ment.

“This is an exciting project for the areaand people can be excited at the prospectof receiving new homes, because they havesurely waited a long time for this to hap-pen,” says Lee.

Smit confirmed that the city experiencedsome challenges over the years, most nota-bly the Environmental Impact Assesment(EIA) regulations.

“This had a major impact on the project, and it took more than 18 months for ap-proval,” says Smit. Another challenge forthe city was to determine whether the sitewas not significantly affected by futureproposed plans for the Princess Vlei Park-way, says Smit.

“Here, comment from the ProvincialRoad Engineers created further delays inthe planning process,” says Smit.

However, he highlighted that the project“has now finally been cleared for advertis-ing”,which could see, uponapproval, a civ-il contractor being assigned to it in Augustthis year.

“We have overcome most of the challeng-es, hence the length of time taken to get tothis stage,” Smit said.

The application plans can be viewed bythe public, who have an opportunity tocomment until Monday 28 March.

The plans can be viewed at the office ofthe District Manager at Ledger House, cor-ner of Aden Avenue and George Street inAthlone. Alternatively, email [email protected] or contact (021) 684-4343 or fax (021) 684-4410.

Police clean up on drugsDALEEN FOUCHÉ

MUIZENBERG police preventeddrugs worth R30 000 from reaching

the streets after an intelligence-drivenoperation.

Members of the SAPS, the National Inter-vention Unit (NIU) and Crime IntelligenceGathering (CIG), under the command of Cap-tain Franklin Jeftha, targeted known drugoutlets in the Seawinds area.

After obtaining search warrants, a sub-stantial amount of methamphetamine andMandrax, as well as a firearm, were foundat three houses.

The operation began on Saturday 12March, at 16:10, when a house in PotbergStreet was searched.

A 42-year-old man was arrested after thediscovery of Mandrax and tik. That sameevening, at about 20:10, a house in LangebergStreet was searched and a 22-year-old manwas arrested for the possession of 43 packetsof tik.

The operation was concluded with a fol-

low-up raid in Potberg Street, where a 31-year-old suspect was arrested after beingfound in possession of a pistol stolen inWoodstock earlier this month. Drugs, in-cluding five large packets of tik, were alsofound in the man’s possession.

On Sunday 13 March, tik worth aboutR5 000 was confiscated at a residence in Dru-ry Road, Vrygrond. A 19-year-old man wasarrested and detained at the Muizenberg po-lice station.

Captain Stephen Knapp, spokesperson forthe Muizenberg police station, says ongoinggang activities in the Seawinds-LavenderHill area have emphasised the importance ofintelligence-gathering in communities.“This, however, is only possible when thesecommunities are willing to provide informa-tion to the police.

““These gangsters and thugs causing may-hem in our society need to be removed fromour streets, and we are appealing to our com-munities to assist by providing the informa-tion necessary to achieve this, as it is onlywith your help that these successes can beobtained.”

SA belongs to all of usIT is a sad indictment on our beloved countrywhen on Human Rights Day, a speaker at thenational celebration is shouted down bythose who may not agree with the speaker’spolitical affiliation.

Even before the Acting Premier of the hostprovince could make any remark, people inthe audience waving the flag of a particularpolitical party shouted her down. This saysso much about where we are as a country. Itis clear that we are a deeply divided nation. We have not yet progressed beyond ourblack-white politics. Sadly we have not yetmoved towards becoming a nation unitedaround common principles irrespective ofour political or economic perspectives.

The behaviour of a huge section of the Ath-lone Stadium crowd will be to our shame asa nation. What does that say about our re-spect for human rights? Are we so dividedthat just because the highest office in a prov-ince is not held by one from my party, thatI will show disrespect to that office? And therespect given to the deputy minister, whohappens to be white, was in such sharp con-trast to the disrespect shown to the ActingPremier of the Western Cape. What was thedifference? It was not the colour of the skinso it must have been the intolerance towardsthose who hold a different political perspec-tive. Our national celebration days shouldunite us. Yet we have seen over the years howthis country failed to use our national daysas opportunities to unite the nation. Why arethese days turned into party-political rally-ing events? Should we not unite around the

events organised by our government? Whyare political parties holding rallies on thesedays? More should be done by our govern-ment to ensure fuller participation by all po-litical parties and leadership in the nationalevents. Our people will see the example. Theywill follow. There should be no separate par-ty-political rallies on our national days. Andwhile opposition groups would want to com-plain about the lack of inclusion, they shouldaccept that by organising their own rallies, they are becoming instruments of division.

What was remarkable, though, was the rec-ognition given to Robert Sobukwe and theleadership of his party in the events that arebeing commemorated in the current humanrights celebration. Nation building begins byrecognising that our freedom was notbrought to us by one party but by a widerange of freedom fighters. That battle wasfought on many fronts and it is time SouthAfrica gives due recognition to those stal-warts. Nation building really begins whenwe start recognising the role played by thefirst nation, the Khoi people, in the fightagainst settlers who sought to dehumanisethem and take their land. When we movefrom the fallacy that we are beholden to oneparty or a particular group only for the free-dom we enjoy today, then we would have ad-vanced on the road to building a true unitedSouth Africa.

Human Rights Day should move us to domore to unite as a nation.PHILIP M. BAMGrassy Park

ORVILLE WRIGHT took theFlyer that he and his brotherWilbur built into the air forwhat has come to be known as

the first powered flight at 10:35 on Friday 17

December 1903. Earlier, unbeknownst tothem, Gustave Whitehead and RichardPearse were also experimenting with flyingmachines. Who took first to the sky remainsa controversy. – (www.didyouknow.org)

A different struggleTHIS week, South Africans observed HumanRights Day, commemorating the Sharpevillemassacre which claimed the lives of 69 peopleand left 180 others injured on 21 March 1960outside Johannesburg.

Violence erupted as scores of men, protest-ing against carrying the dompas (an identitydocument indicating where black people wereallowed to go), marched to the police stationto offer themselves up for arrest, as they werewithout their passes. Panic-stricken Sharpe-ville policemen opened fire on the crowd.

Fifty-one years later, laws may havechanged but human rights are not automati-cally respected.

It comes down to each and every one of usrespecting the other as a worthy and equalpartner.

Yesterday'sHumanRightsDay commemora-tion at Athlone Stadium, attended by Presi-dent Jacob Zuma, vividly demonstrated howthe term “human rights” is empty without ef-fort. Patricia de Lille, acting Premier of theWestern Cape, was heckled and booed whiledelivering her address. Political affiliation isrelevant only to thepersonswhochose todisre-spect her because of the party she represents. It ought to be irrelevant in a context in whichshared is history is commemorated.

The complexity of South African society re-quires a tolerance for diversity. This countryis made up of a wondrous array of differentpeople – and our differences must be accommo-dated if we are all to feel at home within itsborders.

Respect cannot be legislated. While themany apartheid laws based on the absence ofrespect for citizens of this country have beendumped, this, as yesterday shows, does not au-tomatically bring respect into our hearts.

It is an attribute we must strive to acquire.Itwas fought forduringmanypoints inourhis-tory and if commemorative days such as Hu-man Rights Day, Women’s Day and Youth Dayhold any value to us, it lies in their remindingus of the mistakes of our past, and also in re-minding us that the real work does not lie withour law-makers, but with ourselves.

THE feeding of baboons and monkeys hasbeen outlawed in the Westen Cape andanyone not adhering to the new regula-tion will be fined. According to Fanie

Bekker, CapeNature’s executive directorof Operations, the regulation applies inprivate and public spaces. Previous regu-lations regarding feeding baboons only

stipulated that people may not feed ba-boons along roads, but new laws empow-er CapeNature to prosecute people feed-ing baboons in their back gardens.

MELISSA LE ROUX

A GROUP of pupils from South Penin-sula High School in Diep River – fondlyknown as SP – came together with fourother schools to discuss history at a“youth dialogue” on Sunday.

The South Peninsula History Socie-ty was started last year to teach pupilsmore about South African and CapeTown history.

SP invited four schools, LawsonBrown High School from Port Eliza-beth, Fairmount Secondary School inGrassy Park, Crestway SecondarySchool in Retreat and ID Mkize Sec-ondary School in Gugulethu, to jointhem in the discussion.

“The Youth Dialogue is a way inwhich the youth can centre their ideasin a structural manner, where there’sminimal contact. It helps them to de-velop critical thinking skills and theselearners are very critical minded. Allthe ideas at the dialogue are complete-ly theirs,” says history teacher DrFrancois Cleophas.

Each school presented a differenttopic, which was discussed broadlyamong the Grade 10 and Grade 11 pu-pils.

With about 30 learners from eachschool, the aim of the dialogue is tohelp youth further their knowledge be-yond the school textbooks, broadeningtheir horizons to discover unknownhistorical landmarks.

Grade 11 pupil Fatiema Hendricks, who was the speaker at the class pres-entation, says the history society helpsher further her knowledge of history.“After being involved in this society,I understood my textbook more andit’s nice to have my knowledge broad-ened,” she says.

Shameen Zalgonkir, a member of theHistory Society, says the society has

brought about a positive experiencethat will help her in the future. “Weare taught things that we are nottaught in school. It’s great that welearn about things that are relevantin South Africa instead of theworld,” she says enthusiastically.

Another member of the society,Laaiqa Holliday, agrees with herclassmate. “It’s nice to actuallyknow what’s going on around youand knowing what the meaning be-hind a historical statue or land-mark,” she says.

She adds that the society is keento help underprivileged schoolswith resources, which is why thefour schools were invited to jointheir historical discussion. Theyouth dialogue took place in theSouth Peninsula High School’s hall.

Stormers ridingStormers ridinghigh after winhigh after winTASMIN CUPIDO

A VICTORY over the Vodacom Bulls atLoftus Versveld for the DHL Stormers for

the first time in eight years will certainlyput an extra spring in the team’s step forthe rest of the Super Rugby competition.

The men from the Cape, who are now theonly unbeaten team in the coveted competi-tion, managed to trump the Pretoria men 23-13 in a tightly contested, physical encounterlast Saturday evening.

And to add to the notches on the Stormers’belt – a try from recently under-performingspeedster Bryan Habana. The try was onlythe team’s second for the season, after theone by flanker Pieter Louw in the team’sopening match of the competition againstthe Lions.

And, despite only scoring the sole try, head coach Allister Coetzee was impressedwith his team’s attack.

“We created a lot of opportunities and weknow that we need to keep improving. Theattack displayed against the Bulls is definite-ly a step in the right direction,” he said.

Discipline was another reason for theStormers’ victory. The Bulls constantlytransgressed, giving flyhalf Peter Grant op-portunities to add to the Stormers’ tally.

The visitors remained the more disci-plined of the two sides, only conceding sixattempts at goal. Grant managed to slot sixof 10 attempts at goal, while the Bulls’ usual-ly accurate Morné Steyn only managed toconvert three of six attempts.

The set pieces and the breakdown pointswere dominated by Coetzee’s chargers. “Wealways knew that we would have a challengeup front and there was certainly a physicalintensity,” Coetzee said.

“Although a battle, we managed to do well– we scrummed well and stole a couple ofline-outs. The victory was a collective effortfrom the entire team.A lot of hardworkwentinto the preparations for the Bulls matchand the players accepted the challenge andstood up on the day.”But on Saturday the Stormers will face ateam with a different style and approach tothe game. They take on the Western Forcefrom Australia who, despite being relativelyinexperienced, always pose a threat on at-tack.

After beating the Lions 27-15 at Coca-ColaPark in Johannesburg on Saturday after-noon, Nathan Sharp and his men will believethat they are able to compete with the Storm-ers.

An interesting battle between flyhalfsGrant and wunderkind JamesO’Connor is like-ly to ensue, while the experience of captainSharpe and fullback Cameron Shepherd willassist their team in the challenge. The battlebetween blind-side flankers Pieter Louw andRichard Brown should interest rugby loversas well.

THULANI SERERO is close toleaving Ajax Cape Town FC to

pursue a professional soccer careerwith Ajax Amsterdam FC in theNetherlands.

Serero’s move to the world-renownedDutch club was confirmed by GeorgeComitis, the CEO of Ajax Cape TownFC, over the weekend.

“There is little doubt that Serero willsoon be joining Ajax Amsterdam. Hewas invited to a trial so that they canfurther assesses his ability to withstandthe pressure of European soccer,” saidComitis.

The good news for Ajax fans is thatSerero (21) will not be lost to the UrbanWarriors until after the end of the Pre-mier Soccer League (PSL) season.

Serero and Sameehg Doutie were ontrial at Ajax Amsterdam early last yearon the recommendation of Hennie Spi-

jkerman, a former technical director atAjax Cape Town.

Spijkerman is now the assistant-coach for Frank de Boer – the new headcoach at Ajax Amsterdam. De Boer lastweek informed Ajax that he needs tohave another look at Serero, who hasshown excellent form for the title-chas-ers in the PSL this season.

Ajax Cape Town FC, which is a satel-lite club of its Dutch namesakes, hassince its founding in 1999 regularly con-cluded successful contracts for its starplayers with its Dutch namesakes.

Serero is set to follow in the footstepsof ex-Ajax aces Benni McCarthy, Day-lon Claasen and Steven Pienaar, as wellas Cameroon international midfielderEyong Enoh – a member of the currentAjax squad that is placed third in theDutch Premier League.

The Soweto-born Serero, Pienaar(now Tottenham Hotspur FC) andClaasen (now Lierse FC, Belgium) wereincluded in the 22-player Bafana Bafa-

na squad that will face Egypt in an Afri-can Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier atEllis Park, Johannesburg on Saturday26 March.
