Parties cry foul in Ward 88 MELISSA PAPIER T HE Democratic Alliance (DA) has lodged a complaint with the Inde- pendent Electoral Commission (IEC) fol- lowing alleged irregularities at a polling station in Ward 88 during last week’s elec- tion. This comes after DA party agents laid com- plaints with seniors members in the party about the alleged misconduct of an IEC pre- siding officer at voting stations at Philippi Primary School and at the Philippi Sports Field. DA candidate for Ward 88, Carol Sables, says she was alerted by party agents sitting at voting stations in Philippi about the al- leged misconduct of the presiding officer. Ward 88 covers Lentegeur (south of High- lands Drive, west of AZ Berman), Philippi (east of New Eisleben, west of Stock Road), Weltevreden Valley (north of the R300 and east of Highfield Road), New Woodlands (east of New Eisleben and north of Highlands Drive). Sables says on Wednesday last week she re- ceived a call from her party agents telling her that they were “thrown out” of a voting sta- tion in Philippi. “Party agents have made sworn affidavits at the police station about the experience at the voting station. According to the agents, some people got four ballot papers and this is unacceptable. The party agents did not even sign the documents to confirm the voter count as they were thrown out, and this is un- acceptable,” she says. It is alleged that the presiding officer had disappeared from his post and returned in- toxicated, before throwing out party agents of the DA. According to Sables, she informed senior members of the DA as well as the IEC about the incident. “The information was sent to the DA, who lodged the complaint, and we waited till the early hours of the morning to send a person to the voting station. No one was sent to deal with the matter,” she added. Grant Pascoe, DA metro chairperson, says he has lodged a complaint with the IEC and an investigation is being conducted based on the complaint lodged. Pascoe says: “Issues have been raised by the candidate with regards to the vote count, and allegations of misconduct by the presi- ding officer being drunk at the voting station are being investigated by the IEC national branch.” He adds that the DA lost by 177 votes in Ward 88, but he could not elaborate on the in- vestigation at this stage. “Overall the DA has done better than ex- pected, as the results show both nationally and provincially. We will be holding council- lors accountable and monitoring their effec- tiveness in all areas,” Pascoe adds. He thanked the Mitchell’s Plain voters for placing their confidence in the DA and its councillors to ensure service delivery to the area. Provincial spokesperson for the IEC, Courtney Sampson, says he is “not aware of the complaint”. “If the IEC knew about the person being in- toxicated at the voting station, they would have been removed immediately,” he said. He adds that if party agents lodge com- plaints, their first point of call would be to ad- dress these complaints with the presiding of- ficer, who should provide a response to the agent immediately. “If the agent is not satisfied with the out- come, they can lodge an objection under Sec- tion 65 with the national office,” he says. Whitey Jacobs, the ANC local elections co- ordinator for the Philippi area, says no inci- dents have been reported at Philippi Primary School, but confirmed that there were com- plaints lodged by the DA and ANC party agents regarding the presiding officer. “Our party agents have also lodged a com- plaint with the IEC about the presiding offi- cer being drunk. Our agents, however, say that agents left the station briefly as they were called out by their coordinator. The DA should take up the matter with the IEC,” says Jacobs. The DA has come out victorious in this year’s local municipal elections in Mitchell’s Plain, with landslide wins in all Mitchell’s Plain wards, except Ward 88. Previously, two of the wards in Mitchell’s Plain were held by the African National Con- gress (ANC); however this time round it will be the DA running the show for the next five years in Mitchell’s Plain. Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha have been hotly contested areas in the City of Cape Town. Despite the recent violence in Tafelsig, voters still cast their votes for the political party of their choice on the day. Tafelsig has been in the spotlight on nume- rous occasions, with residents protesting for better service delivery in the area. In 2009, the DA won the Ward 79 by-elec- tions with a landslide 79,38% of votes cast. Residents elected Dennis Williams – previ- ously from the Independent Democrats and now with the DA – to be their ward council- lor. This time around Dennis moved away from the DA to join the Community Coalia- tion (Comco), the party to which his wife, Charlotte Williams, belongs, and stood as a ward candidate for Ward 79. Charlotte was the former deputy mayor and served as a councillor for the National Party, the Inde- pendent Democrats and the DA. Williams lost the ward to the DA’s new can- didate, Solomon Philander, who gained 76,79% of the vote. In both wards 82 and 99, the DA maintained its stronghold with victo- ries. Sheval Arendse won Ward 82 with 80,03% and Maria Weavers won with 55,47%. The hotly contested Ward 99 covers Tafel- sig, Eastridge and parts of Khayelitsha. READY FOR BATTLE: Thousands of fans flocked to the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday 21 May, to watch the Urban Warriors, Ajax Cape Town F.C, capture their first PSL trophy in 11 years. However, the sea of red left the stadium disappointed, as the title went to Orlando Pirates on goal difference. Ajax required a victory, but failed to deliver, drawing 2-2 with Maritzburg United. Pirates on the other hand spoilt the party by beating Golden Arrows 2-1, with a late winner by midfielder, Isaac Chansa. In the photo are John Le Roux and his three-year-old son, Keyan. MELISSA PAPIER

THE newly launched Community Coalition(Comco) has vowed to continue working with-in the community despite the political partynot winning any wards or seats in council.

Charlotte Williams, the leader of Comco, says she sees the results as an “achievement”.Her party received over 1 300 votes in Mitch-ell’s Plain.

The strongest support came in Ward 99,where 524 votes were in Comco’s favour.

“The results for such a small party is anachievement, as we got more votes than othersmaller parties who have been established foryears.

“We as an organisation, still feel that the peo-ple of Mitchell’s Plain deserve better, and wewill continue with our work,” Williams says.

For now, she plans to take a break from thecommunity and from politics “to spend timewith my family as a housewife and a mother”.

She adds that while the party has not wona ward, it has plans in place and will continueworking closely with the community.

“The team now has much more time to buildon the support they gained from the communi-ty for the next elections. People need to be edu-cated around their voting powers.

“People voted for the party and not theperson, as people don’t know who theirward councillor is,” she says.

Dennis Williams, former DA councillorfor Ward 79, joined his wife’s party and wasthe party’s ward candidate for Ward 79.

People’s Post asked Charlotte why herhusband would give up a council seat andmove to a newly-established political party.

The paper tried calling Dennis numeroustimes to gain comment, but at the time ofgoing to print, he could not be reached.

According to Charlotte, the DA did notchoose her husband as their candidate. Hewas not given the opportunity to retain hisseat.

“He has not decided what he will be doingnext, but will decide at a later stage,” shesays.

Charlotte was the deputy mayor of CapeTown, and served as ward councillor for theNational Party, the Independent Democrats(ID) and the Democratic Alliance (DA).

She launched her party on 7 April fromher house.

Thiswas soon followedby intensivemeet-ings and campaigning in the Mitchell’sPlain area.

Comco made headlines in the area, bring-ing various issues on service delivery un-der the spotlight.

There were expectations that Comcowould get the support of disgruntled and un-happy DA and ANC supporters in the area.

“We will be watching the ward councillorsclosely to ensure that service delivery takesplace in the area and we will hold them ac-countable for service delivery.”

What nextfor the IEC?LIAM MOSES

WHERE does the Independent Elec-toral Commission (IEC) turn its atten-tion after elections?

Now that the votes have been cast, the ballots counted and the winningparties declared, the organisation’simmediate responsibility was the dis-mantling of voting stations during thefirst two days after election day.

According to Courtney Sampson, head of the IEC in the Western Cape, the organisation now starts another, smaller elections process.

“Our next step is that we are goingto have a workshop with our employ-ees to prepare for the election of coun-cillors to council,” says Sampson.

“They will be ready to run thoseelections by the time those councilsare meant to be constituted, and thathas to happen within 14 days of theelections.”

The IEC is also charged with edu-cating voters, and once the councilsof South Africa’s municipalities havebeen reconstituted, the organisationwill continue the ongoing process ofeducating South Africans about theirvoting rights. Over the next fewmonths, IEC employees will visitschools and rural areas around SouthAfrica to explain to citizens how elec-tions work. It is also the responsibili-ty of the IEC to ensure that councilseats that become vacant in the timebetween municipal elections arefilled. Although the IEC used the serv-ices of 16 000 volunteers in the West-ern Cape for the purposes of the elec-tions, Sampson is one of only 15 full-time IEC employees at the organisa-tion’s provincial head office whomanage and work to carry out theseimportant tasks, and many others.

But the thousands of political partyposters that cover lamp posts acrossthe country are not the IEC’s respon-sibility. The posters will need to betaken down by the political partieswithin 10 days of the election, or theywill be removed by the municipality, which will then charge the responsi-ble party.

WARD 82: Sheval Arendsesays his first priority is tocall a meeting with thebackyard dwellers ofMitchell’s Plain and establish the Tafelsig Backyarders’ Association to address the housing issue inthe area. “Unemployment, security and crime in the area will be focusedon. I want to work with the people.”

WARD 75: Natalie Bentsays she will be concentrating on skills development for all the youth inher ward, working closelywith the neighbourhoodwatch and CPF. “ I will befocusing on youth who areaddicted by assisting andreferring them to the relevant outpatient clinics and rehab centres. Service delivery is veryimportant, and this will be my focus to ensurethat the community receives these services. My most important project, which has beenon the cards since 2006, will be the wideningof Highlands Drive. I am extremely excited tobe working on that project and to see it materialise.” Photos: Supplied

The people have votedTHE councillors for Mitchell’s Plain havebeen elected by the people to be the voiceof the community. Ward councillors areelected to address the needs of the commu-nity on a local level.

People’s Post spoke to the elected candi-dates to find out what their plans are for thenext five years. All councillors thanked thecommunity for voting them into power as “itshowed that the community has confidencein our ability to address and speak on behalfof the people”. All wards were won by theDemocratic Alliance, except for Ward 88,which was won by the African Nation Con-gress.

WARD 43: Irma Jackson says she will beholding a series ofmeetings with residents in her ward tofind out what theywant. “I want the community to come forward. Let’s work together and find a way forward together. I will be focusing on creatingpartnership to strengthen economic opportunities in the ward, and ensure that all parksare upgraded to standard. I want people livingaround the park to take ownership of theparks to prevent vandalism and theft of theequipment.”

WARD 78: Edward Andrews says he will be holding a series of meetingswith residents in his ward.“I want to meet with residents first and hear whattheir needs are, and fromthere put in place a fiveyear plan of what the community wants in their wards. I also want toensure that the standard of service deliveryin the areas is maintained.”

WARD 76: Gouwa Timmsays she aims to have a multipurpose centre built in thearea. “I want to continuewhere I left off. Traffic calming in the areas will be addressed, and I will continuewith upgrading of parks.Dumping in the areas is problematic, as officials would clean the area and hours later thearea is dirty again. People need to take ownership of their surroundings and report those responsible for dumping.”

I want to speed upservice delivery in the area, as some residentshas been waiting for years to have things done.Safety and security will also be a priority onopen spaces and at parks. I want to upgradeparks and on the open spaces create food gardens for the community. Skills development forthe youth will also be addressed to alleviateunemployment in Mitchell’s Plain.”

Voter turnout strong amid protestsMELISSA PAPIER

DESPITE the violent clashes last weekbetween law enforcement agencies

and backyard dwellers in Swartklip andKapteinsklip, a number of voters in Tafel-sig went to the polls to cast their vote.

After the land invasions over the weekend, many of the backyard dwellers made itknown that they would not be voting.

On Wednesday morning, People’s Post visi-ted Kapteinsklip Station and found a few fami-lies scattered on the land, many of them loo-king destitute and lost. Some families werehuddled around small camp fires, chatting toeach other, while others were going abouttheir daily tasks of cooking and clearing upthe little structures they call home.

Gadieja Skeepers says she’s been on thehousing waiting list for 17 years, and “all Iwant is a place to call home”.

“This whole protest is about housing, andall we want is a house. There is so much openspace in the area – why can’t it be used tobuild houses for the people?”

Another backyard dweller, Lalanie Da-vids, says that all the people want is a house;but the “violent and brutal” ways that lawenforcement approached the people is “un-forgivable”.

Davids says: “The way these people cameto remove us was inhumane. They almostkilled a five-year-old girl with a bulldozer. What kind of people do this to others?

“We are fighting with the government asthey have failed us. Instead of spending moremoney on housing, they chose to buy armsand a fighter jet, which is not necessary. Wewill not move until we are provided with ahouse.”

People’s Post asked some of the people oc-cupying the land if they were going to vote. Many said yes, even if it was just to “spoilthe ballot with the words “we want houses”.Others said they would rather vote for asmaller party.

Later People’s Post visited Swartklip andfound scores of people still in the area andon the land. Many were determined to stayon the land. However there were not manystructures erected; many families wereguarding their “plots”.

In the background a woman who lives inthe area was encouraging residents to casttheir vote. “Mense, gaan vote en dan kan julleweer terug kom; anders val julle votes weg,”she said.

Another man who wished to remainanonymous for fear of victimisation toldPeo-ple’s Post that he does not think the situationwill improve.

“The way this ‘committee’ went aboutthings is wrong as lots of people have beeninjured. I understand the desperation of thepeople and the need for housing but there areprocesses that need to be followed,” he says.

He adds that he voted, and hopes that the

party voted into power will be able to bringabout change.

“I voted so my children can have a betterfuture.”

While still chatting to some of the backyarddwellers, a contingent of police officers andan armoured personnel carrier came fromthe bottom of the sportsfield and descendedon the crowd of people at the scene.

The members of the Mitchell’s Plain Back-yard Dwellers and Residents’ Associationmaintained that they would not vote.

Armed officers were ready to remove thepeople. Many were defiant and would notleave as police swarmed on people from allangles, even from on top of the hills and thebush. People started to run, with many wo-men shouting at the children in the area toleave.

Kylie Hatton, media manager for the Cityof Cape Town, confirms that the City has ap-plied for an eviction order at the Cape HighCourt and that the matter will be heard on1 June.

“There are two structures on the land thatcurrently appear to be occupied, and the Cityhas applied for an eviction order. The Cityhas been granted an interdict to stop peoplefrom continuously invading the land.

“The City would not give anyone permis-sion to build informal housing structures onits own land. The only permission it wouldgive for occupation of its land would bethrough housing projects or in situ upgradeprojects. Allocations will be done based onthe housing database,” says Hatton.

She added that the City recognises thatthere is a need for housing right across CapeTown. “We are sympathetic that some peoplehave been waiting for a long time for housingand may be impatient.

“But the City cannot allow people to illegal-ly occupy vacant land or build informal struc-tures. Illegally invading land may delay orprevent formal housing in areas of invadedland,” Hatton says.

DESPERATE: Sedowney Manuel (left), Lelanie Davids andXavier Susa are some of the backyard dwellers at Kapteinsklip Station who are refusing to move.

CLEARED: Backyard dwellers occupying land at Kapteinsklipcontinue to clear the area in a bid to make it their home.

School allays suspicionsANDRE BAKKES

STRANDFONTEIN High School is un-dergoing a massive revamp of its “in-

adequate” sportsfields, which will benefitthe whole community, according to theprincipal.

If all goes to plan, the huge property nextto the school will soon boast a soccer and arugby field.

The first stage of construction, which start-ed last December, will be finished by the endof the month, and then a roll-on lawn will belaid.

The process the school followed did, howev-er, raise concerns from members of the com-munity.

People’s Post published an SMS recently inwhich the sender complained about theschool’s “illegal sand mining and dumping”,but the principal, Peter James Brockman, says the school categorically denies this.

“The school and the contractor have em-barked on an ambitious plan to start the de-velopment of sports fields and the parents ofscholars have been informed.

“The development of our own sports fieldswill have a mutual benefit for our larger com-munity, and the learners of our school, espe-cially in terms of the usage of the facility.”

Currently the only sport facility on theschool’s property is a tiny rugby field, whichresembles a sandpit.

The school always had to rent the grassyfields across the road as the need arose.

“For the safety of our learners, this new fa-cility will be a huge advantage, as they wouldnot have the added burden of having to travelto other venues,” Brockman says.

Despite the positive spin-offs of a new facili-ty, some members of the community haveclaimed wrong-doing on the school’s part.

When this newspaper visited the site, ananonymous roleplayer revealed that the con-

tractor has been verbally abused a few timesby “people looking for something to complainabout”.

The Strandfontein Ratepayers’ Associa-tion’s Ephraim Stanfield raised several objec-tions to the authorities, as well as the school, after he noticed that there was little controlduring the process.

“Trucks arrived there unannounced todump large quantities of rubble for just R100.Normally these truck drivers must pay R750to dump at municipal sites. It got so bad thatI’m now considering getting an interdictagainst the school.”

One of the workers on site said the terrainwas very uneven, so rubble had to be acquiredfrom outside to flatten it out.

Local ward councillor and communitymember, Irma Jackson, says she was not in-formed of the school’s plans, but emphasisesthat she isn’t against the acquisition of sportsfields.

“It used to be a very dangerous place for thechildren to cross, and it looked very neglect-ed. We want what is best for the children,” shesays. Members of the community had contact-

ed her for clarity, but since she was not in-formed of the plans she had not been able togive them answers. The complaints, accord-ing to Brockmann, come down to the short-term inconvenience the construction hascaused.

“We humbly apologise for this, and at thesame time humbly appeal to any aggrievedparty to partner with, and support, the schoolin this ambitious, but valuable project. Afterall, the completion of the project would not bean individual gain, but a social gain,” he con-cludes.

Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for Educa-tion MEC, Donald Grant, says the departmentwas informed of the school’s project beforethey began with construction. She also ad-mits that they received a complaint from acommunity member, which they investigat-ed. “The MEC visited the site, met with amemberof the school governingbodyandwasassured that no illegal dumping was takingplace. If there is any evidence to the contrary, the department will investigate. We are cur-rently monitoring the situation,” she con-cludes.

Police van in collision with carANDRE BAKKES

SIX people were injured when a Len-tegeur Police vehicle allegedly skipped atraffic light adjacent to the PromenadeMall in Mitchell’s Plain on Sunday.

Two officers and a family of four sustainedmild to moderate injuries and were taken tohospital.

The Goodwin family was travelling in anAudiA4, and, according to ananonymouson-looker, the two officers were driving in anunroadworthy police vehicle.

He told People’s Post that three of the fourtyres were almost completely worn out.

“I arrived on the scene after it happenedand spoke to a few people there,” he recalls.

“Apparently the driver of the police vehi-cle wanted to cross the intersection and onlyput the siren on as he was crossing it.”

The Goodwin family – Milton (49) and Sha-ron (53), along with their nine- and seven-year-old daughters – were on their way to abirthday party when it happened.

Milton’s brother, Harold, acted as spokes-person for the Goodwins, but he did not wantto name the two children involved.

“All four were taken to Gatesville MedicalCentre on Sunday, but only Sharon is stillthere,” he said yesterday.

“The youngest child sustained some bruis-es and the eldest had a slight head injury, forwhich she needed some stitches. Milton alsosuffered a slight head injury. Sharon is beingtreated for a couple of broken ribs,” he elabo-rates.

“Milton told me that he never even hearda siren. The traffic light was green for him,and as soon as he saw the oncoming policecar he swerved, but it was too late.”

Harold says a kombi in the left lane impe-ded the view for his brother.

“He is definitely going to follow this up. Itwas clear negligence by the police,” con-cludes Harold.

Spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain Police,Constable Jerome Voegt, could only confirmthat police are investigating the circumstan-ces surrounding the accident and that a reck-less and negligent driving case docket wasopened.

At the time of going to press, Voegt was un-able to reveal the identities of the policemen, nor could he shed light on the claims that thepolice vehicle was unroadworthy.

Racing throughhistoryTAURIQ HASSEN

IMAGINE a race through the his-tory books, passing many of thehistoric landmarks built by theslaves in the early 1700s.

This vision will become realitywhen the Jive Slave Route Challengekicks off on Sunday 12 June.

It will consist of four events; a halfmarathon, a 10km run or race/walk,a 5km fun run or walk, and a 10kmbig walk.

According to Farouk Meyer, or-ganiser of the event, the race is de-signed to place emphasis on the his-toric sites built and created by theslaves.

“This race has to be different to theother races in Cape Town, becausealmost the whole of Cape Town wasbuilt by slaves, and there are manyhistorical landmarks to be seen,”says Meyer.

The race starts off in DarlingStreet in front of the City Hall, movesup Keizergracht towards DistrictSix, down Roeland Street into Or-ange Street, then through the Com-pany’s Garden and into Bo-Kaap be-fore the race finishes on the GrandParade.

Some of the landmarks along theroute include:

. TheWhippingPost on the cornerof Buitenkant and Darling streets, which was once a place of torture

and execution. This was a post towhich slaves and convicted personswere tied while receiving corporalpunishment.

. The Auwal Mosque in Bo-Kaap’sDorp Street is the oldest mosque inthe country. The Muslim faith wasbrought to South Africa by slavesbrought to South Africa by the DutchEast India Company. This mosque’shistory dates back to 1794 and theproperty was owned by a freed slave,Salie Coridon, of Ceylon.

. OldSlaveChurch, SouthAfricanMission Museum at the top of LongStreet, was founded by the SA Mis-sionary Society in 1799 to spreadChristianity to the slaves.

. The Castle of Good Hope wasbuilt by the Dutch in 1666 after theirarrival. The Castle was erected as afive-pointed star on the foreshore ofCape Town. It is one of the oldest sur-viving buildings in SA.

“Everybody is encouraged to jointhe race, because it’s an opportunityto explore your history during arace, which is something differentand exciting,” says Meyer.

People’s Post is proud to be theprint media sponsor of this event.

Entry forms for the race will bemade available on Thursday 26 May.For further information, visitwww.itheko.org or contact Faroukon 083 460 6736 or Fatima on083 943 6236 or Shiehaam on084 991 1200.

ETV’s Naked News, broadcast on a Fri-day night/early Saturday morning afterthe 22:00 movie, has unlocked controver-sy among various organisations taking a

stand for family values, including theFamily Policy Institute, which has calledon members of the public to write in toetv in protest against the show. In the

show, woman presenters present art, en-tertainment and lifestyle news either na-ked or while stripping down. etv says theshow will be aired over the next 12 weeks.

Time to deliverTHE local government elections are over; theelectorate has played its part, the IEC has en-sured a free and fair process, the victors havebroken open the champers and the van-quished have regrouped.

Now the real work begins.Every single election, be it municipal or na-

tional, be it at home or abroad, is characte-rised by electioneering. This courtship pro-mises voters the world – in this case, the city.

Politicians pull out all the stops, unreser-vedly so.

Their ultimate goal is power; power thatcorrupts; absolute power that corrupts abso-lutely – as (loosely) quoted by 19th centuryhistorian and moralist John Emerich Ed-ward Dalberg Acton, who said: “Power tendsto corrupt, and absolute power corrupts abso-lutely. Great men are almost always badmen.”

True or false? In the political context, it has been shown

to be the former and the names of some“great” South African men spring to mind.

One man’s name stands out, though – thatof an internationally-revered great man, ourown former president Nelson Mandela, whodid not succumb to the intoxicating lure ofpower.

Election results are proof that “the peoplehave spoken” and during this municipal elec-tions, the people elected to keep the ANC inpower, nationally. But in the coveted WesternCape, the DA has triumphed, obtaining anoutright majority in a number of WesternCape municipalities, including Cape Town, where the party secured 135 seats, followedby the ANC with 73, and the ACDP and Cope, with three seats each.

Delivery is crucial to running a city suc-cessfully, especially one as diverse as CapeTown. More importantly, though, the onus ison all political parties and their candidatesto honour the mandate voters have entrustedthem with and play equal leading roles in ele-vating all nine provinces to world-class stan-dards.

Drugs still problematicin Colorado

AS a Mitchell’s Plain resident, I amdisturbed by this week’s front pagephoto of the Mitchell’s Plain People’sPost compared to the False Bay edi-tion.

By chance I had a copy of both Peo-ple’s Post editions when I recognisedthe big difference. Mitchell’s Plain al-ready has a lot of negative factorsabout it, and I find it unnecessary tostill emphasise the negatives.

And comparing to the False Bay’sedition with the “Bird’s eye view” ofOld Boyes Drive was obviously un-pleasant.

I do understand that the photo wasrelating to themain storyof theweek, but it was also the headline in Mon-day’s Cape Argus, and the way theydepicted the story was a lot easier tolook at.

I just feel you should be more sensi-tive on the cover picture. Especiallywhen having different editions, youwill have readers seeing more thanone edition. And it could offend manypeople as it offended me.MYLES LENTINGMitchell’s Plain

THE photo referred to by the

reader was of a man bleeding fromthe forehead after being hit by arubber bullet during a clash withlaw enforcement officers after re-sidents had invaded the Swartklipsports field. In our view it was acompelling image of the authori-ties’ response to the invasion. Theuseof strong imagesonparticular-ly the front page is always careful-ly considered. We need to be surethe photo has a reason to be there(it must illustrate an importantpoint for the attention of readersand not merely be gratuitous).Strong photos are used when justi-fied to illustrate strong stories –and sometimes the force of the sto-ry comes from the photo accompa-nying it. Readers can rest assuredthat we apply the same principlesof photo selection across our 10editions of People’s Post, andstrong community stories will beillustrated with strong photos onthe front pages of different edi-tions as these stories arise. Thiswill not necessarily be in the sameweek, though, so comparison inthe same week will not give fullperspective. – Ed.

IN REPLY to the com-ments issued byMichael Jacobs, in thePeople’s Post last week(“Pagad pledges its sup-port”, 17 May) we de-mand an apology forstating that there are“no drug houses inColorado Park”.

For the past fivemonths we as parentshave been sacrificingour time and energy toprotect our communityfrom the influx ofdrugs.

We have seen Jacobsa few times on his bicy-cle in the area. Perhapshe should get off his bi-cycle and joinusduringthe nights when the

drug trade is at its busi-est. Jacobs’ commentsabout our children be-ing on drugs and thatwe cannot controlthem, are unaccepta-ble, as he cannot com-prehend what pain andsuffering parents aregoing through in tryingto protect their chil-dren from the drugdealers.

Jacobs, since youwere brave enough topost these comments, perhaps you will beman enough to apolo-gise to the parents ofColorado Park.

Sincerely,MOGAMAT GERTSEMitchell’s Plain

Dealing with bullies at school Your SMSes

So sweetly

IN March this year, the Non-ViolentSchools Campaign – a project of theQuaker Peace Centr – launched an anti-bullying drive in 18 of its participatingschools. Members of the Peace ClubsandPeaceEducators at these schools aretasked with designing an anti-bullyingdrive that best suits the needs of theirschool.

It is not enough just to remove the vic-tim from the bully’s midst, as the bullywill simply find another victim.

Both the bully and the victim needhelp, and everyone at the school musttake reports of bullying seriously. Someschools ignore the victims’ complaintsbecause they think the person is atten-tion-seeking or being dramatic. Some-times these complaints are brushedaside because nobody at the school real-ly knows what to do or just haven’t gotthe time to deal with it. Ignoring reportsof bullying can have serious conse-quences for both the individual and theschool. The anti-bullying drive includes

an awareness campaign using posters, slogans, meetings and events to ensurethat everyone in the school knows whatto do if they feel bullied.

The school must create a culture thatfrowns upon bullying.

Some of the strategies and activities ofthe drive include

setting up Peace Clubs at the schooland establishing Peace Buddies as cus-todians of peace and non-violence at theschool. As an organisation, we promoteand make all learners aware of the BullyHotline – 0800 055 555 – by advertising itvisibly in classrooms and public placesin all schools. The next Anti-Bullying In-daba will be held on Saturday 4 June atGlendale High School in Mitchell’sPlain, starting at 09:00. Anyone interest-ed in attending can contact Avril orXoliswa at the Quaker Peace Centre inMowbray on (021) 685-7800.AVRIL KNOTT-CRAIGProject Leader, Non-violent SchoolsCampaign for the Quaker Peace Centre

drug dealers. We need Pagad in our area of NewWoodlands please!

. Regarding “Noisy Neighbours in Bay View”.My neighbour constantly has renovations doneon his home in the evening until the early morn-ing hours of the morning. This means knocking, grinding and drilling, then on top of this, he nowhas people over to play dominoes, and this meansshouting and loud noises during the week rightup to the morning hours! What happened to con-sideration for others? Have we lost the plot andjust become self-centred, inconsiderate and dis-respectful towards others? When confronted, myneighbour merely replies that people followinghis religion are more tolerant. Well “bro”, thisis not about religion, and I don’t think you havean idea of the true meaning of tolerance. This isabout common decency. Bayview resident

Are we waiting forthe City to come and sweep roads maybe twiceyear? Bayview resident

What a difference a day makesMELISSA PAPIER

STUDENTS at False Bay College recentlyheld a cultural day to highlight cultural

differences in educares.

The Early Childhood Development depart-ment at False Bay College in Khayelitsha, aimsto transform child care. On its internal “cul-tural day”, the department’s lecturer, FredaPrins, said daycare centres and non-formalschools for children need to respect differentcultures.

“We as a department want to support child-friendly crèches, where children are safe, healthy and educated about other cultures.

“This can be done by educating teachers, particularly about other cultural practices. Itnot only important to train child-minders, butalso to link them with other organisations,”Prins says.

She adds that the college has a “very impor-tant” role to play in changing people’s atti-

tudes about different cultures.“Part of our module or programme is manag-

ing diversity. This is something we need to doso that carers may know about the diversityin cultures.

“These carers should know that they will bedealing with different children from differentcultural backgrounds. People should be mind-ful that they have children from Khayelitsha,Mitchell’s Plain and other areas,” she says.

At the event there was food from variousSouth African cultures, from mngusho (samp),mielie pap and samoosas to roti. Students wereencouraged to taste and learn.

Buyiswa Nyakombi, from Yomelela daycarein Khayelitsha, says local crèches often in-clude children of all races, so “it is importantfor carers to learn about cultural differences”.

Nyakombi says: “For most early childhoodpractitioners, the daycare centre is the mostsacred space they have.

I think we owe it to ourselves to attend suchcourses. “There is a lot that we don’t know

about other races and their lifestyles. For in-stance, as a Venda there is a lot that I did notknow about Xhosas and coloureds, but now Iknow better.

“I would encourage all carers to learn aboutcultural differences, because we are dealingwith leaders of tomorrow at our daycare cen-tres.”

Elize Jansen, Rentia Bruiners, MaureenLodewykandLorettaBassonvolunteer at vari-ous primary schools in the Mitchell’s Plain ar-ea, and said they enjoyed the course.

Jansen, a Mitchell’s Plain resident, says thecourse provided a foundation required forschool entry.

“It gives us as educators an understandingof other people, and provides guidance andsupport to parents and carers. It is sad to seethat there is still a vast percentage of childrenstaying at home due to lack of finances.

Hopefully circumstances will change in thenear future through this learnership from thegovernment,” says Jansen.

Presenting ... Mel Miller!BARRY HILTON gave a con-summate performance that isstill remembered fondly inFish Hoek, and next up on theComedy Legends in the Valleyseries is the giant of stand-upcomedy, Mel Miller – a larger-than-life presence in South Af-rican venues and TV loungessince 1963.

Mel will be performing in FishHoek on Saturday 11 June in theFish Hoek High School Hall, which is becoming quite the en-tertainment venue!

The appearance – and indeedthe entire Comedy Legends in theValley series – is a fundraiser forthe Shark Spotters. BarryHilton’s show was a sold-out suc-cess with a capacity crowd of 570people enjoying his classic come-dy in May.

The Comedy Legends in theValley series is organised by localcomedian Mark Sampson, whohad the idea to bring all the come-dy legends down to the south pe-ninsula so that local audiencescould be treated to South Africa’sbest – while supporting a goodcause. The series is proudly sup-

ported by People’s Post as printmedia sponsor.

Mel Miller has just returnedfrom a sold-out show at the Syd-ney Opera House and has also re-cently been awarded the Comic’sChoice Lifetime AchievementAward. He is verywell-known forhis “Potroast and Biltong” TVshow in the 1970s, in which SouthAfrican comedians were pittedagainst British comedians. Theshow really took off and at onestage had more viewers than the

BBC programme “The World atWar”. Mel has crossed the some-times delicate lines of age, cul-ture and colour and in the apart-heid days relished telling it as itis. He was picked up by the secu-rity cops in 1985 after a show atthe Carlton Hotel, taken to theHillbrow police station, androughed up for his anti-govern-ment comedy.

Mel has appeared in nearly allthe Smirnoff Comedy festivals;co-wrote, producedanddirectedashow with the late Shaun Griggs(“Things To Do In Jo’burg WhenYou’ve Forgotten That You’reDead”; packed for three weeks);sold out at the Grahamstown Fes-tival twice; toured with his ownshows (Captain Chaos, CaptainChaos Flies Again and DivineMadness); and worked in Israelwith Cyril Green and Eddie Eks-teen and in London as part of aSouth African Comedy Festival.

Tickets to his show on 11 June, which starts at 19:00, cost R100 ifpre-booked on 078 174 4244 orR120 at the door on the night.Tickets can also be bought at APJones in Fish Hoek Main Road.

Be sure to not miss this legend!

Opportunities lostTONY ROBINSON

DOES the name MichaelThackeray mean anythingto you?

He was in Cape Town recent-ly to attend a conference at theInternational Convention Cen-tre and hardly anybody no-ticed.

There were no pictures inthe papers and no radio inter-views, yet Thackeray shouldbe as famous as the late Profes-sor Chris Barnard. Certainlyhis gifts to the world havetouched millions more lives.

Like Barnard, Dr Thackerayis a UCT graduate, but his fieldwas chemistry. He developedthe lithium-ion battery thatpowers your cellphone andyour laptop, and when you buyan electric car one day, his bat-tery will drive the motor.

So Thackery has changedthe world, yet we don’t knowvery much about him. Perhapsthe reason is that it is a ratherembarrassing story.

Generally Professor JohnGoodenough is credited withthe invention of the lithium-ion battery, but it was Thack-eray and his team at the CSIRin Pretoria who were responsi-ble for its development.

They still hold most of thepatents, 28 of them in Thack-eray’s name.

Those scientists were theworld leaders in battery re-

search. Then, in 1994, our newgovernment, all bright-eyed,bushy-tailed and flushed withsuccess at the polls, closeddown the battery researchunit.

It was the dumbest decisionsince the old Soviet Union re-jected transistors and put itsfaith and its electronic futurein good old glass vacuum tubevalves.

You might say that hind-sight is always right, but theearly cellphones and laptopswere already on the market, and the need for smaller, moreefficient batterieswasnotdiffi-cult to identify. It was alsoclear that the battery researchwas world-class. This was cer-tainly recognised by leadingresearch institutes all over theworld, and they grabbed thescientists.

Thackeray is now one of thetop men at the Argonne Na-

tional Laboratory in the Unit-ed States.

Pause for a moment andthink where this countrywould have been if fundssquandered on the pebble bednuclear reactor had been usedto create a lithium-ion batteryindustry.

It is worth reminding our-selves that it was Thackeray’sbattery that made it possible toconvert the early “brick” cell-phones into the wonderful,multi-purpose gadgets theyaretoday.

More important, however, isthat the old CSIR team madethe electric car a practicalproposition, and here anotherPretoria man comes into thepicture – Elon Musk. He is just39, but has already been de-scribed as the greatest innova-tor in the motor industry sinceHenry Ford. His Tesla electricsports cars, powered by about7 000 small lithium-ion batter-ies, have a range of nearly400km, and the latest ones ac-celerate from nought to100km/h in 3,7 seconds. He hasmade and sold 1 500 of them, and both Mercedes and Toyotahave invested in his Californiaindustry.

And the CSIR? Two yearsago they started a battery tech-nology centre to support thedevelopment of the local Jouleelectric car, but how can theyreplace the expertise that waslost in 1994?

Allister vs Jake – coaching duel awaitsAllister vs Jake – coaching duel awaitsTASMIN CUPIDO

A MATCH of two halves –this is how one can de-

scribe the match between theDHL Stormers and the Blues atEden Park in Auckland on Fri-day morning.

And with the Blues convincing-ly taking the first of the twohalves, going into half-time witha 19-3 lead, no Stormers fan canbe criticised for not believingthat their team could come backto win the match.

But it was the men from theCape who came back guns ablaze, winning the most important halfand securing their first win ontheir tour of Australasia.

They beat the home side 28-26,with a last-minute try by captainSchalk Burger, and an all-impor-tant conversion by stand-in fly-half, Dewaldt Duvenage.

The relatively young side, without many of their experi-enced stalwarts, stood up to thechallenge laid down by the Blues, with the centre pairing of JohannSadie and Juan de Jongh un-doubtedly the stars in the per-formance.

“They were playing againstsome pretty good opposition, andshowed some great touches. I amreally pleased with their per-formance,” coach Allister Co-etzee said of the young duo’s per-formance.

“The win is a massive moralebooster for this side, and definite-ly stands us in great stead for therest of the competition.”

The men from the Cape nowturn their sights to the capital ofAustralia, Canberra, where theywill face a struggling Brumbiesside.

And it is also in this matchwhere Coetzee will meet hisformer coaching team-mate, JakeWhite, who recently accepted the

position of head coach of the two-time championship side. Howev-er, he will only be assuming dutyin 2012, but a recent surge in playby the Brumbies – they drew 13-13to the Western Force in Perth onSaturday – indicates that Whitemay already be assisting the side.

With White and Coetzee work-ing closely to secure the 2007World Cup victory for the Spring-boks, it will be interesting to seejust how much these two breed-ers remember of the others’ styleand coaching techniques.

The Brumbies’ preparationshave been marred by the fact thatstar performers such as Matt Gi-teau, Adam Ashley-Cooper andMark Chisholm have alreadysigned up with other teams fornext season, while injuries to thelikes of captain, Rocky Elsom, have forced them to field relative-ly inexperienced sides week afterweek.

However, one can never writeoff a side like the Brumbies, whohave also been runners-up in thecompetition on three occasions.

And with key players such asJean de Villiers, Jaque Fourieand Peter Grant returning frominjury, team selection will be in-teresting, after the performanceby Sadie and De Jongh last week-end.

Many have indicated that Co-etzee and backline coach, RobbieFleck should look to rest the pair-ing – De Villiers and Fourie – be-fore the last stretch of the compe-tition, while others have said thatthe two should play with theyounger pairing playing on wing.If that should happen, the experi-ence of Bryan Habana (wing) andConrad Jantjes (fullback) will belost, with paceman, Gio Aplonmoving to fullback.

A different approach may notalways be necessary, but couldprove vital in the remainingweeks of the competition.

Stunned Ajax’s tales of woeStunned Ajax’s tales of woeBRIAN GAFFNEY

WANTED: A coach in the mould ofFoppe De Haan plus an experienced

pool of defenders and midfielders.

These should be some of the prerequisitesthat Ajax Cape Town CEO George Comitisand his fellow directors will inevitably needto ponder as they re-shape and strengthentheir squad for next season.

Ajax, after being in a virtually unassailableposition to annex the Premiership champi-ons’ title for the first time in its 11-year histo-ry, were denied a place in the soccer annalswhen Maritzburg United held them to a 2-2draw at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday af-ternoon.

The result afforded Orlando Pirates thehonour to walk the red carpet – with a bettergoal difference record than Ajax’s – after a 2-1winoverGoldenArrowsat theOrlandoStadi-um in Soweto.

The dramatic change in fortune that cameabout midway through the second half– afterAjax had led 1-0 via a Khama Billiat goal – leftDe Haan devastated.

Panic and pathetic defensive play had costAjax dearly – and ruined De Haan’s retire-ment from top-class soccer – at the most cru-cial time of the season.

Veteran custodian Hans Vonk spoiled his

farewell match when he failed to clear an in-nocuous back pass in the face of a determinedchallenge by goalscorer Gert Schalkwyk dur-ing a rare raid on the Ajax goal.

Suddenly Ajax looked bewildered and Mar-itzburg sensed the Urban Warriors were indisarray.

The pacy Felix Obada exposed long-servingbut injury-prone left flank defender BrettEvans – whose inclusion for the big match ap-peared to be based on sentiment. Yes, the riskof fielding Evans so soon after his recoveryfrom injury backfired horribly.

Then too, Nazeer Allie – also back from in-jury – looked unsure in his role next to Clay-ton Daniels at the centre of defence wheneverMaritzburg applied pressure. And it toldwhen his unforced handball infringement af-forded Diya Sibisi the penalty opportunity tohit the target against his former club.

Sameehg Doutie equalised after placing hislow shot past goalkeeper and man-of-the-match Shu-aib Walters. But the livewire mid-fielders’ effort came too late. Pirates were al-ready celebrating in Soweto.

Now what Ajax need most desperately is anexperienced mentor to replace De Haan –with the final choice that will be announcedin a fortnight’s time likely to be a fellow-Dutchman.

A dependable replacement for Vonk is alsovital as back-up keeper Andre Petim – with

due respect to his unwavering commitmentto the Ajax cause – lacks the build to deal withcrosses into the danger area.

The imminent return of Cole Alexanderand Aiden Jenniker from a loan spell withVasco Da Gama will pay dividends.

Ball winners like Alexander and GranwaldScott operating in tandem have the potentialto stabilise the Ajax midfield, while Jennikercould rival Evans for the left-back position.

Another concern for Ajax of course is thehabit of some of its key players to incur sus-pensions – at times, needlessly – when Ajaxneeded them most this past season.

On Saturday, the suspended Thembinkosi“Terror” Fanteni watched the action from thestands. His ability to to dominate the aerialduels and to hold possession for the pacy Thu-lani Serero, Billiat and Doutie was sorelymissed.

Daniels also lost his composure when aneedless handball infringement during a 3-0win over Pirates ruled him out of a title-chas-ing clash with Mamelodi Sundowns, whofought back to draw 4-4 after trailing 1-4 inPretoria in April.

Ajax, Fanteni and Daniels certainly ruethose moments of indiscretion.

D’Oliveira’s awards stolenA COLLECTION of medals and artifacts be-longing to cricket legend, Basil D’Oliveira, has gone missing in Worcestershire, Eng-land.

D’Oliveira (79) was born in Cape Town andwas a member of the St Augustine’s CricketClub before going on to make internationalheadlines for his decision to play test cricketfor his adopted country, England, during theapartheid era

D’Oliveira recently lent his medals andkeepsakes to the Worcestershire CricketClub, where he was a member for several sea-son, after emigrating to England in the early1960s.

D’Oliveira’s son Damien – a formerWorcestershire player and now the county’sdirector of coaching – said that the stolenitems were of great sentimental value.

“We were asked by the county’s heritage so-ciety to lend them for a display in the pavilionduring the winter,” said Damien. It is under-stood that D’Oliveira’s treasured items werestolen between 24 April and 5 May.

D’Oliveira played for England in 44 tests, but was denied the right to play first-classcricket for South Africa because he was clas-sified coloured. In 1968, England had to cancelits tour to South Africa after the governmentof the day objected to D’Oliveira’s inclusionin the team.

. Recently, the St Augustine’s CricketClub named its home venue in Elfindale,Heathfield the Basil D’Oliveira Oval in hon-our of the famous cricketer.
