THE dumping of second-hand tyres in Mitchell’s
Plain’s parks has residents upin arms, as they claim that thetyres are a health and safetyrisk and an eyesore.
Tyres are dumped on openfields in various parts of the area.
Basil Coetzee, a New Wood-lands resident and chairperson ofthe local community policing sub-forum, says he saw a counciltruck dump a load of tyres on 7February in Johannes MeintjiesStreet.
Rustim Keraan, the director forSolid Waste, says the allegationwas investigated and it was foundthat a small group of locals askedfor tyres to demarcate the parkthey were planning to create.
“The driver was trying to obligethe community’s request. This isnot allowed and he has beenwarned against a repeat offence. The tyres that he delivered were
subsequently removed,” he says.Keraan says tyres are dumped
in various areas within the city, not only in Mitchell’s Plain.
In some cases, he explains, resi-dents use them to create bounda-ries for community parks and, be-ing unable to afford fences orwalls, try to demarcate the facili-ties with half-buried tyres. How-ever, residents and organisationswithin New Woodlands are unim-pressed with this practice.
“They are being thrown all overthe area and children are playingwith them. If the tyres are setalight, they could burn downhomes in the surrounding area.Children play with it, which hasa negative effect on their health,”says Coetzee.
He adds that because of theirshape, scrap tyres can also collectwater and debris, which creates abreeding and feeding habitat forinsects and rodents carrying dis-eases.
“The scrap tyres are also asource of dirt, dust, moisture andmold,” he says.
The City of Cape Town’s Inte-gratedWasteManagementBy-lawclearly indicates that dumping ofany items, tyres or otherwise, isillegal and offenders face stifffines. Tyres are regarded as aproblematic waste type.
The Department of Environ-mental Affairs has been workingon a strategy for tyres, which isnot yet complete.
In the interim, the City accepts
all loads of tyres for disposal at theVissershok Landfill Site at thecurrent general waste tariff ofR278.95 per ton.
However, all tyres which areproblematic on a landfill, will besubjected to a changed tariff in thenear future, which will vary ac-cording to the size of the tyre andwhether it is cut up or not.
Tyres are currently illegallydumped to avoid the landfill dis-posal tariff.
Tyres can be dumped in smallquantities at the Bellville Southand Coastal Park landfill sites, while all loads are accepted atVissershok.
Tandeka Gqada, the Maycomember for Community Services, says the illegal dumping of tyres
in parks has become a big prob-lem in the greater Mitchell’s Plainarea.
“City Parks staff are stoppingthe community from using thetyres in our parks as they are afire hazard. We have also startedremoving tyres ourselves, as notall the residents are happy withthis type of gardening/landscap-ing arrangement.”
She adds that staff have liaisedwith the local ward councillors tobroadcast the message to the resi-dents in their wards.
Residents are asked to contactthe local office of City Parks ifthere are problems with vehiclesdriving across the parks wherethere are no fences and not to usetyres to prevent this from happen-ing.
“We find that tyres are mostlyillegally dumped in parks and thecentre islands of roads during thenight,” she says.
Residents can report illegaldumping of tyres to the City’s callcentre on 0860 103 089.

Dear reader,Thank you for your warm re-
sponse to my column. The firstthingyou’ll notice thisweek is thatI have a different picture in my“ConnectED” logo; and you’ll won-der why. I can explain.
I’ve learnt fast that when you’rein the public eye, albeit as a bylineor picture credit, feedback andcriticism become your second andthird names. You learn to “rollwith the punches”, “hit the groundrunning” and, when warranted,“give as good as you get”.
The strategy, though, should be to extractvalue from the many noises (often well-mean-ing) being made, and not to take everythingpersonally; easier said than done.
The lesson I learnt from using an “arty” pic-ture is that interpretation is subjective andthat often consensus is your best guide. I stillhave my own views, though, about the perfectpicture, based on my negative self-perceptionthat I am not photogenic. In fact, I often tell
people that I look better in per-son.
That said, having listenedwell to feedback from key col-leagues, including my boss, anda contact (once a friend) whoreckons I look “worried” in lastweek’s photo, I’ve changed mypicture.
I may yet change it again...On to more entertaining top-
ics: namely the Cape Town Inter-national Jazz Festival, whichbrought the city to life this week-
end and saw local and international acts shar-ing the stage. My first time at this, the 13thannual festival, wasmademoremagical bymy“tour guide” and esteemed Media24 colleague,Niel le Roux, who showed me the ropes at thefestival, taking me to, among others, a “jazzrave” outside the Cullinan Hotel.
Niel is ahardact to followandaswe traipsedaround the Cape Town International Conven-tion Centre, I was pleased I had worn comfort-able high heels – although a dress that was de-liberately a bit too long nearly saw me tum-bling down escalators.
I don’t favour crowds and I’m known to walkout of full supermarkets despite my “must”shopping list, but considering the magnitudeof the festival and attendance, I did not feelclaustrophobic or uncomfortable while stand-ing shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands ofwell-heeled strangers – until some moron hadthe audacity to touch my backside and disap-pear in a flash before I could turn my rage onhim/her. That didn’t ruin my experience, though, nor dilute my appreciation of CapeTown as a truly world class city we are privi-leged to be citizens of.
We have proven our ability to unite, be crea-tive and work together towards a commongoal. Admittedly, we have our flaws, like anysociety, but the countless positives and goodoutweigh the shortcomings.
I wish you all a blessed and safe Easter. Ifyou’re planning a road trip, please take yourvehicle for safety checks beforehand.
Till next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column by Peo-

THE man who recently assisted policeto convict two gangsters was assassi-
nated in Beacon Valley last Tuesdayevening.
Jeremy Henkeman was gunned down inCharlie Street while walking home.
He was the only witness in the trial of well-known 28s gang members Mauricio “Muga-bi”Arendse and Nizaam “Slappes” Abra-hams, who were each recently sentenced to25 years in prison on charges of murder andattempted murder (“Justice prevails formurder victim,” People’s Post, 6 March).
The two are behind bars for killing Jessica
Gallobooi in June 2010.Gallobooi and Henkeman had been sitting
in their wendy house in Buick Street whenshe heard two voices calling her boyfriend.
She had opened the door but before Henke-man could step outside, shots were fired andGallobooi was hit 11 times.
It emerged during the trial that the shoot-ing was a planned hit, and the defence didnot dispute the fact.
The men were also identified by the wit-ness as belonging to the 28s.
Spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain policestation Constable Jerome Voegt confirmedTuesday’s shooting.
“At the scene the police discovered thebody of a 30-year-old man lying in the streetwith several bullet wounds to his body.”
The police are investigating the murderand the circumstances surrounding the inci-dent. No arrests have been made.
A Beacon Valley resident, who wish to re-main anonymous for fear of her safety, tells
People’s Post that the area is “very tense fol-lowing the shooting”.
“The people fear that this was a retaliationattack and that more shootings are to follow.People are now scared to give information tothe police because he was a witness – lookwhat happened to him,” she says.
Henkeman was apparently placed in wit-ness protection. However, he left the pro-gramme and went back home.
But Eric Ntabazalila, the National Prose-cuting Authority’s spokesperson, claimsthat Hankeman was not in the witness pro-tection programme.
“He was not part of the programme whenhe testified as a witness in the case nor whenhe was shot,” says Ntabazalila.
People’s Post could not get comment fromthe family as they are in a place of safety.
Anyone with information about the inci-dent can contact Detective Warrant OfficerDedrick April on (021) 370 1738 or(021) 370 1600.

SUMMER JACOBS
ARMED with faith and the determina-tion to turn people’s lives around, a
Mitchell’s Plain organisation is bringingabout positive change for those facingtough circumstances.
Destiny Changers, a Christian-based min-istry for women, was founded by Sandy Oost-endorp three years ago, shortly after the pass-ing of her husband. “My husband died tendays before his 55th birthday on 10 July 2009.I was listening to the word of the Lord andHe ministered to me that the reason for myhusband’s passing was that He was equippingme to help other women in need. We believethat you can only empower somebody else ifyou have gone through something yourself,”she says.
Oostendorp points out that the name Desti-ny Changers is profound. The word “desti-
ny”, as she explains, is a pre-determinedcourse of the future. She continues that if peo-ple are uncertain of how to reach their desti-ny, the Destiny Changers are there to guidethem and show them that their “destiny lieswithin Jesus”.
Oostendorp then turned to her church, theRehoboth Community Life Centre at the cor-ner of Weltevreden and Mosquito roads,Rocklands, to seek out members to join herquest in paving out the organisation’s plan.
Vanessa Oostendorp is not only one of thefirst members, but she is also Sandy’s sisterin-law. “Ever since my brother, Sandy’s hus-band, passed away, we have been holdingprayer meetings once a week in her home. That was before Destiny Changers was found-ed but I feel that it was a stepping stone forthe ministry’s foundation,” says Vanessa.
The rest of the members include YvonneBrenton, Zanne De La Cruz, Bridgette Fred-ericks and Debbie Mahogany.
Led by these six women, the minis-try takes place at Sandy’s home inMitchell’s Plain. Every six weeksSandy opens her doors and encour-ages women to attend the empower-ment workshops held by DestinyChangers. “We discuss a diversenumber of topics such as grief, prayer, being widowed, fruitfulnessin isolation and new beginnings, toname but a few. We have topics pre-pared every six weeks, however, sometimes the Holy Spirit leads usthrough different avenues so we canconform to the needs of the womenwe are ministering to, and not theother way round. We also believethat prayer is one of the fundamen-tals with each of our sessions,” ex-plains Sandy.
Only three years old and home-based, theministry is going from strength to strength.
On Thursday 17 February, the group was in-vited to discuss Destiny Changers on CCFM.“I sent an outline of the ministry to the radiostation and some time later I was called byoneof the radioDJs, invitingus to doan inter-view on one of the shows,” says a beamingSandy.
When discussing the future, Sandy exudesconfidence. “The plan of the Lord is not small. Our God is big, so we always have to encour-age the women to think big and not limitthemselves. I believe Destiny Changers isdefinitely going international. We would liketo spread our wings and one day minister topeople abroad as well. Our ministry is notjust forMitchell’s Plain. It’s for our communi-ty, it’s for our province and it’s for our coun-try.”

IN an effort to educate locals on envi-ronmental preservation strategies, the
long-awaited Wolfgat Environmental Ed-ucation Centre is set to be built in thenext few months.
The facility, which will be erected on a va-cant erf close to the Wolfgat Nature Reservein Tafelsig, will be funded by the City of CapeTown’s Urban Renewal Programme as wellas a grant from Expanded Public Works.
Wolfgat and Macassar Dunes Nature Re-serve’s Jerome September says not manypeople in Mitchell’s Plain know about theplans for the education centre.
“We want to make the communities awareof the opportunities this centre can bring tothem and to their children. Issues such asdumping and the biodiversity being underthreat affects people’s lives, and we need touse this centre as a way of informing peoplehow and why they need to look after the envi-ronment,” he says.
The centre will be built in the heart ofthree different communities; Searidge Park,Mitchell’s Village and Old Tafelsig.
A public participation process was heldlast year where the residents could expresstheir concerns about the upcoming project.
“We must take into consideration thenoise, dust, and inconvenience the construc-tion of a centre will make. That is why it waschosen to be built on this erf; there are lesscommunities to disrupt,” says September.
The education centre will be fullyequipped with three classrooms in whichstudents can learn about the environment af-ter school.
Keith Lennox, member of the WolfgatSteering Committee which was establishedas a watchdog to oversee the planning of thecentre, says that the facility will providescholars with a great opportunity to do re-search for assignments.
“Students from schools and colleges willbe able to use the centre as a platform to readup on information for various environmen-tal studies. It will provide them with the nec-essary tools to pursue careers in their cho-sen environmental fields,” he says.
Two public meetings will be held, wherethe basis of the project plans will be dis-cussed.
Residents of Mitchell’s Village andSearidge Park can attend the informationsession tonight (Tuesday 3 April) and thoseliving in Old Tafelsig can attend on Wednes-day 4 April at the Mitchell’s Plain Youth Cen-tre, at the corner of Kilimanjaro and Pyr-enees roads at 19:00 for 19:30.
Centre to focus onsaving the world
A PUBLIC meeting focusing on the laneclosure issue in Mitchell’s Plain will beheld on tonight (Tuesday 3 April) at theWestridge Civic Centre at 19:00.

AFTER being dormant for years, the Strand-fontein Community Police Forum (CPF) hasbeen revived, with the new executive mov-ing swiftly to implement various newprojects in the area.
The CPF executive and subforum electionsrecently took place and the forum is made upof about 20 organisations registered with theCPF.
The newly elected executive is chairper-son Brendan Baxter; deputy chairpersonBradley Avontuur; secretary Baronise Hen-ry; assistant secretary Tania Dominee; treas-urer Mark Rodrigues; project coordinatorDavid Fish; and public relations officerMario Oostendorp.
Oostendorp tells People’s Post that themain aim of the organisation at this stage isto work in partnership with residents, busi-ness organisations and the police.
“We as a community need to take back ourneighbourhoods and not be held ransom bycrime. This we can achieve through the es-tablishment of more street committees andstrengthening our block and neighbourhoodwatches. Our focus will be on building a rela-tionship of trust and service delivery be-tween the police and the community. Our ap-proach to crime will be both objective andrealistic and we require the community’s in-put to ensure we are delivering on our man-date.
“Residents can do a great deal by gettingto know their neighbours,” he says.
The various portfolios held in the forumsinclude victim support, which ensures thatvictims of crime have the necessary supportand resources within the precinct. Socialcrime will focus on domestic and elderlyabuse.
They will also deal with social crimes atschools, focusing on drug awareness, crimeand substance abuse.
Crime-prevention operations will focus oninitiating crime combating solutions such asstreet watches, block and neighbourhoodwatches.
“Over the next few weeks the CPF willhold meetings with all the relevant role play-ers and organisations within Strandfontein, with the hope of working towards resolvingcrime issues, as a community. We would liketo invite all organisations within Strandfon-tein to register their organisations with theCPF,” he added.
Residents are urged to use the relevantcontacts to raise their concerns. All informa-tion will be treated as confidential.
The Sector One subforum chairpersonCharmaine Dias can be reached on072 576 9273 for matters relating to Strand-
fontein Old Village and Wavecrest. For matters relating to Sector Two, made

THE 73rd edition of the Cape MalayChoir Board’s Grand Final waswrapped up at the Athlone Stadium onSaturday, producing some “competi-tive performances”.
Young Men Sporting Club from Mitch-ell’s Plain found themselves on top of thelog once again, when they scooped the cov-eted Silver Fez Trophy for the second yearrunning after scoring the highest numberof points.
The choir walked away with 60 points inthe Highest Points category, securing thetrophy for the field events.
Shafiek April, the president of the board, was amazed at how much the annualevent’s competitive edge has grown, high-lighting that even the smallest of troupesare aiming for the number one spot.
“These teams are all working hard. Theyhave a competitive nature that brings outthe best in their performances and puts ona real show for everyone to enjoy,” saysApril.
Young Men also wrapped up titles in thesectional division of the competition, aswell as securing the Top Eight for twoyears running.
“They did really well. The competitionwas really competitive and if you walkedaway as champions, you must have been
really good,” says April. The event also gave some 5 000 specta-
tors a glimpse of the future, when the SASchool Marching Champions, DennegeurPrimary School from Mitchell’s Plain, puton a spectacular display.
April said the crowd were wowed by theyoungsters, adding that much of the talenton display would soon become frontrun-ners for respective teams participating inthe board’s competitions.
“It was really an eye opener to see howmuch talent is out there and these boyshave shown exactly why they are South Af-
rica’s best marchers,” says April.Looking ahead, April hopes to create an
“improved” version of events when itcomes to the Malay choir competitions bychanging and tweaking some rules.
“We will be looking to encourage teamsto work even harder and practice a lotmore, because this will do wonders for theevent in future,” April concluded.
The top six were Young Men with 60points, Shoprite Jonge Studente with 44points, Ottomans with 42 points, Young Ca-balleros with 36, Strelitzia with 29 andYoung Zinnias with 28.

Money mattersAS commuters dig deeper into their pocketsto cover the increase in train ticket prices, motorists and electricity users are also facinga double blow in the cost of living.
Eskom tariffs increased by 16% two daysago after the National Energy Regulator ofSouth Africa reduced Eskom’s average priceincrease from 25.9% to 16% last month.
While the decrease in the price hike is wel-comed, those living below the breadline arebound to feel the pinch.
Cosatu has slammed the move, citing that25% of households are still without electricityat all and 53% of these use firewood for cook-ing.
The union argues that even 25% of thosewith access to electricity use firewood forcooking owing to the cost.
With this, the price of travelling by publictransport is also expected to swell as a petrolprice hike of 66c a litre in coastal areas kicksin tomorrow (Wednesday).
Motorists are expected to bombard localfilling stations till late tonight in a bid to savesome cash before the biggest increase in fuelsince July 2008.
But while the direct impact will have per-sonal budgets in a tizz, the poor will onceagain be hit – in the stomach.
With the gradual increase in petrol comesthe rise in other essentials, specifically food.
The rise in the price of transporting goodsshould see everything from fresh produce toyour favourite coffee being marked up to al-low retailers to continue making a profit.
With the unemployment rate estimated tobe just under 25%, a quarter of the populationis already on the back foot financially.
Pensioners received a mere R60 increasefrom government earlier this year, while par-ents dependent on social grants receive onlyR280.
It is hoped that what goes up, must comedown, but do you remember when a loaf ofbread cost R4,99?
Neither do we.
Local government facility is topsI AM Mrs Patricia Bell and I had a stroke on 28December 2011. I was rushed to a hospital wheremy condition was confirmed.
I was completely lame on my right side andmy mouth was also deformed. I was kept in hos-pital for two nights and then sent home in mycondition. During this time I could do almostnothing for myself. I could not walk without as-sistance, could not dress, wash and had difficul-ty feeding myself.
On 4 January my husband decided to try andget me admitted to the Western Cape Rehabilita-tion Centre. He was pleasantly surprised at theexcellent service he received.
He spoke to a lady named Tertia and she wasabsolutely the most helpful and considerate per-son he had ever encountered at a governmentfacility. Another good lady that he met that daywas the one in charge of accounts and medicalaid related matters. I was admitted to ward F onThursday 5 January.
That started an experience which I thoughtwas not possible in a government facility. I re-ceived nothing but love and compassion fromeveryone at WCRC. The treatment I receivedwas way above what I expected. Everyone fromdoctors to nurses, social workers, kitchen staff, security staff, the physiotherapists, occupation-al therapists and speech therapists were totallycommitted to giving me the best services thatthey had at their disposal.
From my very first entry I sensed and attitudeof humanity, compassion, caring and love fortheir patients that would be hard to find any-where else. My process of rehabilitation startedalmost immediately and my recovery showed amarked improvement almost from day one.Within three days I started to walk without as-sistance although I was limping quite badly. I
began to open and close my fingers and startedto feed myself but still with some difficulty. Myspeech also started to improve on a daily basis.Treatment at theWCRCis inmyopinion thebestyou could receive anywhere. I am convincedthat they compare favourably with the best re-habilitation centres in the world. Everyone is socapable, so qualified and so committed to theirjobs. I think of Dr Osborne; so young and yet soqualified. Carla and Andrea, the occupationaland physiotherapists who are so dedicated totheir profession. Susanne, the swimming in-structor who does such excellent work with eve-ry patient – her patience is admirable. I thinkalso of Antonette Odendaal, an excellent socialworker. I am particularly grateful to her for allthe help and advice I received from her. Thereare so many that I wish to compliment for a jobwell done. The nurses, the night staff, the man-ager, the kitchen staff, the cleaning staff, the se-curity staff and even the gardeners.
Before closing, I have to congratulate all ona well kept facility – the landscaping is secondto none. I think the beauty of the place is anothercause of the quick recovery of its patients. Thetrees, gardens and the green lawns also contrib-ute to the healing process of patients at theWCRC.
In conclusion, I would recommend the WCRCto anyone who needs assistance for any ailmentwhatsoever. I have thoroughly enjoyed my stayat the centre. My recovery has been remarkableand I almost feel ready to take on the world.Once again, thank you to everyone at the WCRC.I pray that God will bless your work and thatyou will remain as compassionate as you havebeen to me.PATRICIA BELLMitchell’s Plain

. I am a resident of Cam-bridge. I am happy that thelane has been closed; forthe past few months drugdealing has been takingplace in the lane. A fewneighbours and I, all wholive in the lane, has Mr Toe-fy to thank for our safety. We have never seen him dobusiness from his homeand there were never partslying around. Mrs Mckayused to stop these people;she controlled the wholestreet. We are happy andwant the lane closed for ourkids and our safety. Gangsuse the lane and stolenbags and drugs are throwninto our yards. Mr Toefy isthe best neighbour wecould have.
. Mr Toefy, if you left thegate open like you initiallydid your neighbours wouldnot have bothered aboutyour mechanical work. . The lanes are a prob-lem. The criminals use it torob people, they deal indrugs, they break intohomes and cars and escapethrough the lanes. The peo-ple passing through thelanes don’t have to sit upwith gangs running andchasing each other in themiddle of the night. Wewho live in the streets con-necting the lanes have tosit with this problems. Weare fed up – we also havekids and we have to consid-er their safety.
In response. About the article “Wol-

. My property was dam-aged by an unlicenseddrunk driver in ColoradoPark. I have no dependabletransport as my car wasvery badly damaged!
. What’s the differencebetween the pensioner be-ing held for selling wineand drug houses that oper-ate everyday? This is kill-ing our children and de-stroying our communities. It’s okay for these killers toget a way with murder.Close drug houses and she-

Money matters. The constant “out of
service” message at theWavecrest FNB ATM isdriving me up the wall. Isthere no way that FNB canimprove their service tothe people of Strandfon-tein?
. It is really sad thatyour money is not evensafe in a bank. While I wasasleep on Monday, twolarge sums of money werewithdrawn from myCapitec banking account ata Bellville ATM. What isamazing is that I had mybank card with me in mywallet at home in Mitch-ell’s Plain when this oc-curred. I was told byCapitec bank that my cardwas somehow schemed byfraudsters. The matter hasbeen reported to both thebank and police and theyare investigating. I will getan answer within 14 work-ing days – forget about theinconvenience this is caus-ing me. I ask myself and theCapitec customers outthere: how secure isCapitec’s banking system,or banking in general? Inow have to wait to see ifI get my money back orwhether the bank will saythey are not responsible.Mr Thomas, Beacon Valley

LIAM MOSES
THE southern peninsula is set toreceive a wave of good news inJune this year, when the FutureFactory Good News Cycle Tourtravels through the area.
The tour will see Anne Siroky, former South African volleyballplayer, and as many as ten otherpeople, cycling hundreds of kilome-tres through the southernmetropole of Cape Town and stop-ping in several impoverished areasto highlight the positives whichhave occurred amongst all of thenegatives.
According to Siroky, her reason
for drawing attention to the goodthings which have occurred inthese areas is to try to inspire otherpeople in similar situations to dothe same.
“So if we stop, for example, inOcean View, we don’t want to con-centrate on the bad things that hap-pen in the place,” said Siroky.
“I think if we start talking to peo-ple about the greatness that is hap-pening in their area, they will actu-ally realise that they can take theirarea back. And the gangsters anddrug lords don’t have to continueripping our children apart.
“There are people who want tochange their lives, so why can’t thecycle tour focus on that for a
change?” The tour is being run byFutureFactory, anon-profit organi-sation started by Siroky in 2001 af-ter she retired from volleyball.
Siroky played both indoor andbeach volleyball during her careerand since her retirement she hasrun sport-related community orien-tated projects around Cape Town.
She was named as the ShopriteCheckers SABC2 Woman of theYear for Sport in 2007, was the West-ern Cape winner of the Old MutualSowetanSABCCommunityBuilderof the Year award that same year, and is also a recipient of the ImvusaFoundation’s Community SpiritAward.
Siroky came up with the Good
News Cycle Tour as a way to cele-brate the tenth anniversary of theformation of the Future Factory.
Apart from spreading good news, the tour will also aim to raise R1 000for every one of the 1 600 kilometresthat will be covered.
Siroky says that the funds will beused for future projects for the or-ganisation and possibly to help theareas that the tour will passthrough. “We might want to returnto Ocean View, for example, andtake some equipment to those are-as. Like we know there are some ofthose schools who play VolleyBall,” said Siroky.
“And also to go and look at theneeds. Maybe a R1 000 can sort out
someone’s needs in that area.”The Good News Cycle Tour will
start at the College of Cape TownWynberg Campus on Friday 1 Juneand then wind its way through thesouthern peninsula before settingoff for Worcester and returning toCape Town.
Siroky added that the Cycle Tourwould be the last major project shecoordinated with the Future Facto-ry before embarking on a new busi-ness venture. According to Sirokyher new business will help to fundfurther projects for the Future Fac-tory. To make a donation to the Fu-ture Factory Good News Cycle Touror for more information, contactSiroky on 072 916 3331.

LIAM MOSES
THE last day of the eleventh annualKensington AFC Youth Cup wentright down to the wire on Sunday aspenalties were required to findchampions in both the plate andwinner’s sections of the Under 15tournament.
The Youth Cup features both an U11and a U15 competition and started onFriday with the 16 teams from each agegroup divided in four groups of four.
The top two finishers in each groupadvanced to thewinner’s quarterfinals, while the bottom third and fourthplaced teams advanced to the platequarter finals.
In the plate section Gugulethu sideShining Stars won their shoot-outagainst Mitchell’s Plain team Mr PriceParkhust Academy 2-0 in the final, while Pinelands-based Old MutualAcademy beat Lucky Stars, also of Gug-ulethu, 4-3 in the winner’s section final.
Roger Links, head of youth develop-ment at Old Mutual, said that he washappy with the victory but admittedthat his team were capable of playingbetter football.
“It’s a final; it’s not what we expectit to be because the kids are very tiredat this stage. So the quality of the foot-ball wasn’t up to what it’s supposed tobe,” said Links. “I think, all in all, weare happy that we won. It’s always goodfor the academy to be seen to be win-ning. Success always breeds success.”
Shining Stars qualified for thefinal after beating Everton Unitedin the quarter-finals and Vasco daGama in the semis, whileParkhurst knocked out NorwayPark and George United to claima spot.
Lucky Stars made their way tothe final by first beating the tour-nament hosts and then knockingout Fire Fighters, and eventualchampions Old Mutual first beatCPUT in the quarters and thenAjax in the semis.
According to Links, his teamplayed their best football in theknockout stages of the competi-tion.
“Our semi-final against Ajaxwas probably our best match. Ithink, football wise, that was thebest match of our tournament,”said Links. “We started off veryslowly, and I think we got betteras the tournamentwent on.On thelast day I think we played our bestfootball. Friday and Saturdaywere very mediocre but we gotbetter.”
In the Under 11 competition, thefinal of the plate section ended ina 2-1 victory by CPUT over Nor-way Parks, while the Old MutualU11s also claimed the winner’strophy after defeating Fire Fight-ers 1-0.
The tournament was held at theRoyal Road sportsfields in Mait-land.
