A second attempt at vandalisingParadise Parkwas successful onFriday last week as the lapa was

burned down in the early hours of themorning.The Katrine Harries Close park inNewWoodlandswas set alight inwhatcommunity members are calling “arevenge attack”.Franklin Brawood, the developer ofthe park, says he has no doubt thatthis was arson.“This is the second time, and thistime it was successful,” he says.Brawoodbelieves anaccelerantwasused, as it rained heavily that night.“There is no electricity here sothere is noway this could have caughtalight other than someone setting thefire,” he says.His theory is supported by the factthat the fire started on the top of thelapa, which is made of dried palmleaves.Brawood was woken by his wife at02:30 and told that the park was onfire.Residents attempted to extinguishthe flames but were unable to do sowith just water.“Last time they did this we wereable to put the flames outwith just ourhose pipes. This time it was toostrong,” he says.The park was developed in 2013 andmany events and concerts have beenhosted there.Residents were planning to cele-brate the park’s second anniversarythis past weekend, but the celebrationhas had to be pushed back due to thedamages.All that remains are the pillars andsome burnt beams and nails.

Brawood estimates the cost of thedamages at R2000.The park was built through dona-tions and was intended for the uplift-ment of the community, says subfo-rum chairperson Basil Coetzee.“The subforumcondemns any act ofsabotage or destruction of structures.One of the objectives of communitypolicing is to take back our open spa-ces and streets and we condemn anycriminal behaviour that underminesthis,” he says.Coetzee adds that several weeksago, the park had once again becomea hub for illicit behaviour and had notbeen used by the community.“The park itself is for the communi-ty and when individuals contributefrom our resources to uplift the com-munity it should be appreciated andnot destroyed,” he says.“We call on the community to comeforward with information that willlead to the successful conviction ofthose responsible.”Plans are in place to see the park re-habilitated.“The park is for the community andmany are heartbroken by what hashappened,” he says.Coetzeeurges residents to takeown-ershipandworkwith thepolice topre-vent such acts from recurring.“There has been gambling, loiter-ing and drug use at the park recently.We will not hesitate to engage anymechanism to put a stop to this behav-iour,” he says.Plans to make the park a part of anofficial tour for visitors to the areahave been put on hold.If youwould like to help in rehabili-tating the park through donations ofmaterials or labour, call Coetzee on073 886 3678.V See more images on page 2.

New Woodlandslapa burns downThe lapa in the Paradise Park garden,which was built of recycled treestumps, wood and dried palm leaves,provided good coverage during open-air concerts held there.For the park’s anniversary on 7 De-cember last year Karen Kortje was theheadline act.The structure has been burnt to theground in what the owner is calling arevenge attack.

The garden, known as Paradise Park, cost around R20 000 to construct and was dedicated tothe residents of New Woodlands.

A fire completely destroyed the lapa inParadise Park. It is estimated that it will costR2000 to repair if using some of the existingpoles.

Pupil sparkles on stageResidents have the chance to see an award-winning local pupil repeat her stellar per-formance soon, this time on home ground.Melissa Little from Rocklands High

School inMitchell’s Plain recently shined inher school’s play at a city-wide drama festi-val. The play will be performed again, at theschool on 22 August.Little was awarded as the best performer

of the Smart Living Drama Festival lastweekend.She played the character of Chief Azwi in

Rocklands’ play Doom-Manzi. The play fo-cused on life without amanzi (water).The festival is one of the City of Cape

Town’s youth development initiatives andshowcased environmental plays created byvarious high schools in Cape Town.Aloe High School, Islamia College and

Spine Road High School in Mitchell’s Plainalso participated in the festival, which washosted at the Baxter by the City of CapeTown for the seventh time.

Own playsHigh school pupils from across the city

created their own plays in response to thewater conservation theme through a seriesof skills development workshops leading upto the official festival.Thirteen plays were staged. All of the par-

ticipating schools also performed in a grouppiece and there was a repeat of three show-case performances chosen from the thirteen

plays.“Thisprogrammechallenges theyouth toad-

dress the environmental issues that they facedaily and to showcase these issues along withlocally relevant solutions in the form of a playto their peers and communities,” says Johanvan der Merwe, mayoral committee memberfor energy, environmental and spatial plan-ning.“The theme for this year was water conser-

vation, which is particularly pertinent withCape Town being a water scarce area. It istherefore important that residents are contin-ually reminded that it remains each and every-one’s responsibility to continue to preserveour most precious resource,” he says.V The top six plays of the festival will be performed againat Rocklands High School on 22 August and at Chris HaniArts and Culture High School in Khayelitsha on 5 Septem-ber.

Off-duty policeman shot at car washAn off-duty officer is recovering in hospitalafter being shot in the face in Rocklands.The warrant officer from the Mitchell’s

Plain police station was shot while outsidea petrol garage on the corner of Cedar andBoshoff streets on Thursday afternoon lastweek.Constable Zandile Marashula, police

spokesperson, says details cannot be re-leased as the case is under investigation.“The victim, a 52-year-old off-duty police-

man, was shot in the face. It is alleged thatunknown suspects walked past while hewas waiting for his private vehicle to bewashed at the carwashwhen one of the sus-pects shot at the victim,” Marashula says.The suspects fled the scene on foot and

Hundreds of voices sang praise songsin the streets of Rocklands on Thurs-

day evening last week.The community came out in support

of a prayer session held at the cornersof Strandloper, Heron andFinch streets.The session was intended to aid peace

and healing in the area, following spo-radic shootings.Residents, regardless of their reli-

gious beliefs, were invited to partici-pate.Street committee members, the subfo-

rum, neighbourhood watch membersand other concerned residents gatheredto show their disapproval of the con-stant shootings in the area.The event was also supported by the

police.Jonathan Williams, organiser of the

event, says he is pleased with the out-come of the event.“The turnout is great and we are hop-

ing to do this more often,” he says.Over the past few weeks the area had

become volatile with several shootingsbetween Cedar and Robin roads.Resident and community worker Mo-

gamat Jappie says the volatility is aidedby drug and turf tensions.Williams says the sessionwas to show

that residents feel enough is enough.“We chose to stop on the corners be-

cause there are always people sitting onthe corners and getting shot. We alsoprayed because this is getting out ofhand and we as the residents can’t go onlike this. We need to take a stand,” hesays.The group of residents sang gospel

songs and prayed as they walked theblock of streets between Cedar and Rob-in roads.Williams says he hopes to drum up

more support at community meetingsfor the next event.SubforumsecretaryWashielaSardien

says the sessionwaswhat the area need-ed.“We are so happy to see this turnout.

It is really a blessing to have this prayerin the streets. scouts attended a camp at the League ofFriends of the Blind resort in Strandfonteinin July.Councillor Eddie Andrews helped the

scoutswith resources to ensure a successfulcamp.The project was identified as one of the

ward 78 projects for the current financialyear.During the weekend the children re-

ceived lessons on life skills such as criticalthinking, teamwork and building self-es-teem.

In his address Andrews highlighted thevaluable work the scout movement did, inparticular affording youth at risk with nec-essary life skills.He further thanked Irma Cotton, the

scout leader, for the important role sheplayed as the group leader, ensuring theprogramme was accessible to all and effec-tively managed.Andrews encouraged parents to enrol the

Twomen, accused of targeting pensionersin Town Centre, have been arrested

alongwithotherpeopleduringanoperationin Mitchell’s Plain and Gatesville.

City of Cape Town law enforcement offi-cers arrested 16 suspects last week, includ-ing the two who were part of a gang target-ing pensioners to steal their valuables andsocial grant cards.

Officers saturated the Town Centre andGatesville onMonday last week. The opera-tion also resulted in 35 fines issued worthR19 800, and the removal of 29 illegal struc-tures.

The 16 suspects were arrested on variouscharges, including robbery, the sale andpossession of counterfeit DVDs and CDsandmalicious damage toCity property. Thefines issued covered a range of traffic andbylaw offences.

Officers also seized 1680 counterfeitDVDsand two dangerous weapons.

JP Smith, mayoral committee memberfor safety and security, says two of the sus-pects arrested for robbery were part of agang of five suspectswho target pensioners.

“The gang operates in and around Calyp-so Square in the Town Centre, robbing theelderly of their valuables, including theirSouth African Social Services Agency (Sas-sa) cards. Two of the gang members werearrested, but unfortunately the other threemanaged to flee into the crowd,” saysSmith.

Several Sassa cards were found in theirpossession.

In a separate incident, three men and awoman were arrested for attempting tobreak into the clubhouse at the Rocklandssports field.

“The saturation operationwas one of a se-ries of focused interventions to address ille-gal activity, bylaw offences, intimidationand serious crime,” says Smith.

It has been almost threemonths since the police found

an abandoned baby girl inWoodlands, and still no-one hascome forward to claim her.The Lentegeur police heard

on 19 May that a baby had beenabandoned in Mitchells Ave-nue, Woodlands on an openfield. “On the officers’ arrivalthey found a baby girl betweentwo and four months old,wrapped in two blankets andnext to her a bag with babyclothes and her milk bottle,”says Sergeant Cathy Meyer, po-lice spokesperson.

(GAP) team at Lentegeur hospi-tal hosted an intimate apprecia-tion event at thehospital for partic-ipants of the Rose Parents Project.In existence for more than 28

years and the only one of its kindin the Western Cape, the Rose Par-ent Project provides community-based foster care for institutional-ised psychiatric and intellectuallydisabled patientswhowould other-wise have nowhere to go.

Gap in careThe project was established

since existing group homes werefull, with long waiting lists.

The GAP team handed over gro-cery parcels to the project’s par-ents as a token of appreciation fortheir hardwork.The grocery itemswere collected during an internalfood drive at the hospital.

100 families“The Rose Parent Project, com-

prising 100 families in 14 suburbsof Cape Town, is proof of the suc-cess of Western Cape governmenthealth and the community part-nering to take care of those in needof care.“It is a strong indicator that per-

sons with mental illnesses do notneed to be institutionalised and

that their best chance at recoveryis being in a caring environment,”says Dr Robert Wicomb, a special-ist psychiatrist and head of theGAP team.

Good quality life“Over the years more than 200

patients from Lentegeur hospitalhave been placed into the care ofthe project, enablingmanymental-ly ill clients to go back into a goodquality life in the community – weare exceptionally thankful fortheir willingness to assist,” headds.The foster parents do not receive

any form of compensation.

About 7383 homeless people areliving in shelters and on thestreets of the city, a survey con-ducted by the City of Cape Townhas found.In the first of its kind in South

Africa, the City completed aheadcount of street people in thespace of 10 days.TheCity’s social development

and early childhood develop-ment directorate has revealedthese findings. It is part of a re-search project that set out to de-termine the number of streetpeople in Cape Town, but also togain a better understanding ofthe phenomenon of homeless-ness.Researcher Lynn Hendricks

has presented a report on thesurvey. She said the reasonswhy the survey was done was tounderstand the phenomenon ofhomelessness, and to make rec-ommendations for interventionstrategies and implementationplans within the City.Hendricks explained how the

survey was done and said thatthe City was clustered, usingthe Cape Town map book. Fiveteams were allocated specificareas in Cape Town.The five teams were made up

of six permanent workers, fourCity work programme workersand four law enforcement offi-cers each.“The staff were picked up in

the morning from 02:00 andbravely weathered the cold andwalked the streets from 04:00 to11:30 after a briefing at the of-fice,” Hendricks said.Teams walked and drove

around their areas and teamleaders ensured that every areamarked in the map book wascovered.

AreasThe survey was done in

Mitchell’s Plain, Strandfontein,Portlands, Lentegeur, TableView, Tafelsig, the city centre,foreshore, Bellville, Goodwood,Parow, Wynberg, Sea Point,Kuils Rivier, Claremont, Wood-stock, Lansdowne, Muizenberg,Vredehoek, Oranjezicht, Re-treat and Milnerton. In each ofthese areas 50 ormore homelesspeople were found.“The state of homelessness as

we currently face it is differentto what we observed just a fewyears ago,” Hendricks said.She explained that homeless-

ness was an ever-growing prob-

lem.Tounderstand thephenom-enon it was important to look atdifferent aspects of the problem,including characteristics ofstreet people, pathways tohomelessness, the homeless cul-ture, exit strategies for home-lessness and interventions re-garding homelessness.

R10m to helpSuzette Little, mayoral com-

mittee member for social devel-opment and early childhood de-velopment, said the street peo-ple count coincided with aninvestment of just under R10min thedirectorate’s street peopleprogramme.“The budget for this pro-

gramme has grown from R4.5min 2013/14 to R7.8m in 2014/15 toR9.7m in 2015/16 – an increaseof more than 100%,” she said.Little said the research team

deliberately operated in the ear-lymorning hours tomake it eas-ier to distinguish between peo-ple who slept on the street andso-called day strollers or jobseekers who made their way toeconomic hubs during daylighthours.“They did not only focus on

the obvious areas, like streetsand bridges and building en-trances, but also ventured intothemountains aboveFishHoek,for example, to check for peoplesleeping in these areas,” shesaid.According to Little, the City

hasmade tremendous strides inrecent years in its efforts to ad-dress the complex problem ofhomelessness in a holistic way.“It is not something that is

unique to Cape Town, but Iwould like to think thatwe havecharted a good course inhowweaddress it,” she said.

Plan of actionLittle said the City had three

objectives.The first was to help as many

people as possible who wantedto get off the streets.The second was preventative

in nature – to stop others frommigrating to the streets. Andthe third objective was to sensi-tise the public through theirgive responsibly campaign.“We cannot force people to ac-

bility during patrols. It has helped reducecrime over the past few weeks,” she says.Since sand dunes completely took over

Lukkanon Drive it has made it difficult forthe police to patrol the street, but the stationhas added quad bikes to do dune and beachpatrols.The police have already started daily pa-

trols.Schuter says they are blessedwith the vol-

unteer crime fighters and the faithful streetcommittees of Dieppe Road, Crecy Road andPilot Way, who have been vibrant in theirpatrols.“I salute the gallant souls who sacrifice

their time to ensure the safety of the commu-nity,” she says.

APPLICATION FOR GRANT FUNDING2015/16: SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT ANDEARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENTThe City of Cape Town’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate(SDECD) invites registered community and non-profit organisations to apply for grant fundingfor development projects. The applicants’ core business must be in line with the SDECD’sbasket of services listed below. This request is aligned to the City’s Integrated DevelopmentPlan’s strategic focus on building a caring and Inclusive city and aims to further the goals ofthe City’s Social Development Strategy.

Application must be made on the official application form with the following supportingcertified documents:

• A copy of the latest, audited financial statements or audit certificate if grant funding wasreceived from the City in previous financial years. The amount of grant received must beindicated. If the amount was less than R25 000, only a copy of the final expenditure reportrelating to the previous grant is required.

• A copy of the organisation’s constitution.• A copy of the organisation’s registration certificate.• A copy of the organisation’s latest municipal rates and services accounts (if applicable).• A zero-rate VAT invoice if confirmed as a VAT vendor.• An original of the latest unexpired tax clearance certificate from SARS. Applications

to the elderly, women and children. A key focus for the Directorate is healthy livinginterventions for the elderly

• Programmes supporting the Directorate’s objective of reducing the number of peopleliving on the streets

• Programmes supporting early childhood education and development• Programmes with the objective of developing community cohesion and integration

• Detailed breakdown of project cost. A minimum award of R100 000 per project will beconsidered.

• The business plan submitted together with the grant application must include acommencement and an end date for the project.

• Property that is used for the project must be compliant with Council policies and by-laws.• Where such property is leased, the lease must be submitted as supporting documentation.

Beacon Valley street committees will nowtake to the street in a uniformed way

with the introduction of marked t-shirts.The subforum handed out white, em-

broidered t-shirts to their members. Mem-bership numbers are steadily growing, sayofficials.The subforum hosted its first meeting at

the Shekinah Full Gospel Church onWednesday last week. Most of the existingstreet committees were present.The sector has 21 active street commit-

tees, says subforumchairpersonLornaHer-manus.“The group is very active on patrols and

are doing more than just safety and securi-ty. The street committees are also busywith

fundraisers and upliftment projects,” shesays. Since their inception, crime in the ar-ea has decreased significantly, she says.Secretary Thomas Porthen agrees.“Weare the eyes and ears of the police and

can alert them to incidents. Because of howactive the committees are crime has de-creased.We are also able to have shifts from08:00 to 20:00 every day,” he says.250 residents are registered as street com-

Powell Drive.“We appeal to motorists to work with us

to protect Cape Town’s animal life by driv-ing carefully on roads close to nature re-serves,” says Johan van derMerwe, mayor-al committee member for energy, environ-mental and spatial planning.“Many of themotorists are not aware that

they are driving through these proclaimednature reserveareas,while at the same timemany of the animals are nocturnal, so thismakes it difficult formotorists to see the an-imals at night when they unexpectedlycross the roads. Motorists must adhere tospeed restrictions, particularly at night,when our nocturnal animals are most vul-nerable. Speed kills animals

A 60-year-old man found himself in a pinchafter paddling out to sea at Mnandi Beachon Monday last week.Mario Fredericks, NSRI Strandfontein

station commander says: “At 13:02 theNSRIStrandfontein duty crew were activated bythe report of a lone paddler being swept outto sea on a paddle ski at Kapteinseklip.”It appears that the 60-year-old man had

launched at Mnandi Beach to fish from hispaddle ski – anormalweekday leisure activ-ity for the man – but strong offshore windsbegan to pick up suddenly at about 10:00.The man was only a few hundred metres

offshore and tried to paddle back to shore.Increasingwind speedspreventedhim fromgetting to shore. He was able to reach rocksat Kapteinseklip, off Mnandi Beach.

The man was sheltered there when by-standers saw him and raised the alarm.“While responding to the scenewealerted

the local law enforcement marine officersand they launched their rubber duck andrescued the man from the rocks andbrought him safely to shore without inci-dent,” Fredericks adds.They also recovered theman’s paddle ski.The man was not injured but was ex-

tremely grateful for the quick response.At the time of his launch therewerewind-

less conditions but the wind quickly in-creased to close to 50km/h.The NSRI urges sea users to check the

weather forecast before launching theirvessels and to always be prepared for theworst.

300 tik straws found in houseThe Mitchell’s Plain police confiscatedmore than300packets of tik inBeaconVal-ley on Monday last week.Constable Zandile Marashula, spokes-person says the police were busy execut-ing patrols at about 14:35 when they re-ceived information that drugs were beingsold at a house in Aintree Street.

“Themembers followed up on the infor-mationand searched the suspectedhouse.During the search themembers recovered320 straws of tik inside the house,” shesays.A 38-year-old man was arrested for pos-session of drugs andhas appeared in courton related charges.

New way to enter Cycle TourEARL HAUPT

Riders hoping to enter next year’s CapeTown Cycle Tour (CTCT) will have toadhere to new, groundbreaking entry

requirements.The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust

(CTCTT), which organises and runs therace, has announced a new entry system.An online “ballot system” will now re-

place the first-come, first-serve process,which the Trust says will bring them in linewith other international events. Such a bal-lot system has never been used in a SouthAfrican race before.This is in an effort to give every potential

entrant a fair chance of competing in therace by avoiding a fast sell-out of spots,which has been the case in the race’s recenthistory. Entries to this year’s race sold outin a record eight hours.The Trust has also increased the number

of entries from 35 000 to 40 000, butDavidBel-lairs, a director of the Trust, confirms thatno corporate group entries will be allowed,encouraging those who have made use ofthese entries in the past to follow either thepublic entry process or take up the opportu-nity to support a charity.Bellairs says these charities will be allo-

cated 7000 entries and the Pedal PowerAsso-ciation (PPA) will receive 5000 entries,which will be given to random members ofthe Association.“To honour PPA as founders of the event,

its paid-up members will be offered an ‘ear-ly-bird’ opportunity to register their interestin an entry to next year’s race.“Thosewho are unsuccessful in the initial

PPAballotwill automatically beadded to thegeneral public ballot, starting on 9 Septem-ber, giving them an additional chance to beawarded an entry,” Bellairs explains.

27 000 ballotswill be available to the gener-al public, with a further 1000made availabletodevelopmental associationsaswell as sub-stitutions.Registration of interest in obtaining a bal-

lot will be free and will open on 9 Septemberat 13:00.The window for such registration will re-

main open until 25 September at 13:00.

Prospective riders (both local and interna-tional) can register their interest at www.cycletour.co.za.Doing so amounts to an indi-cation of interest only, and will not ensureentry, and will require prospective entrantsto update their details at the same time.In the week following the closure of the

window for registration, successful appli-cants will receive emails from the CTCT to

confirm that they have been awarded an en-try, which will cost R470 per local rider.International entrieswill remain openun-

til February, or until the allocation of 5000riders is reached, and will cost R800 each.Unsuccessful applicants will also receive

an email and will be invited to enter via asupporting charity or by means of the offi-cial substitution process in January.Successful applicants will have until 26

October to pay and secure their entry. Pay-ment not received before this date, or the ap-plicant’s option to decline the entry, will re-sult in that entry being made available to apreviously unsuccessful rider.According to Bellairs, online ballots have

been successful in top European and Ameri-can sporting events.“Such systems have become standard

practice at key sporting events around theworld, including the New York MarathonandBostonMarathon. TheTrust, alongwithits three co-naming rights sponsors – CapeArgus, Pick n Pay andMomentum – careful-ly researched and considered all options,and we are confident that our new processwill serve riders well and further entrenchthe global appeal of the CTCT,” he says.“Wewant to avoid thousands of applicants

rushing to be first in line as the entry portalopens, and being disappointed when theysell out in a matter of hours.“Our intention is to create a fairer system

as it allows for a greater and more inclusiveopportunity for securing an entry. Entrieswill be awarded at random, regardless ofwhether interest is registered on the first orthe last day of the registration period.We be-lieve the implementation of this new systemis the bestway forward,” concludes Bellairs.As in previous years, a certain number of

the entries will be made available via chari-ty groups at varying costs.The CTCT takes place on 6 March.

The sport of rugby is flourishing in Mitch-ell’s Plain, but not in the way that you maythink.What started out as just a fledgling initia-

tive a little less than sixmonths old, has nowflourished into amovementwhereby, for thefirst time, three girls from the area haveopened spots for themselves at provinciallevel.The Princeton duo of Leandi Smith and

Shoneez Sabatini, as well asWestridge HighSchool’s Michaela Palmer, are representingWP at u.16 and u.18 levels respectively.The Mitchell’s Plain regional team is

coached by Shafiek Murphy, who is alsofrom Princeton, and managed by Rabia Al-exander.“If you look at the girls’ region at the mo-

ment, our rugby is only five, six months old.At themomentwehave threeWPgirls in ourteam. They just came back fromnationals inOudtshoorn and they won the nationals andMichaela’s team (WP u.18) won their nation-als in Durban. Shoneez has (recently) beenincluded in the u.16 team,” says Murphy.Murphy insists that it wasn’t always easy

getting the initiative off the ground, beinga male coach coaching girls. He had to callon the likes of Alexander to help level theplaying field.“There was a call, there was a need for

women’s rugby and because you are a malecoach, you have to be very careful when itcomes to women’s rugby. I then called in Ra-bia and she became the team manager forteam Princeton,” says Murphy.He says that the girls play both sevens and

full matches and, depending on the event,the regions meet up at least once a month

to take part in a festival, which has takenon a league format.

Team workAlexander did not believe she would end

up being part of a women’s rugby team, butis thoroughly enjoying the experience.“Our girls are doing excellently and the

teamwork is great. First it was just Prince-ton against Westridge and all the otherschools, but since we have combined, thelove for the game is even better now thatthey are a combined team. I can only seeour girls going forwardwith the rugby, (be-cause) Western Province is offering a lot.“The secret is the commitment and the

coach is there for them as well as me. Thegirls know that if they have a problem theycan come to me or they can goto Coach. It makes it easier forhim, that I am a woman and amother. If something goeswrong or if they get hurt,where Coach can’t touch them,then I am there to see wheresomething is wrong, so it isamazing to be here,” saysAlex-ander.Shoneez (15) says rugby just

became an overnight passionof hers and that she sees a fu-ture for herself in the sport.“I just tried it out. Something

justmademewant to try it out.It was just about having fun,trying our best and doing it asa team. Rugby builds me as aperson and I amdoing it formyfuture. I want to give mymoth-er a better life, because she isdoing her best to provide forme, so I must do my best atschool and what I have, I mustdomybest so that I can providefor her,” she says..Michaela (16), meanwhile,

started playing the sport afterher classmates insisted shejoin them. She found the adren-alin rush she gets from playingis particularly addictive, while

Leandi fell in lovewith the sport because sheis sporty by nature.“I first played touch rugby, but then WP

coach Ramsay came to our school and intro-duced full contact rugby to us. I run a lot andI run fast, so I love scoring tries,” Leandibeams.Murphy says future plans involve devel-

oping a high-performance group of playersto feed and strengthen WP women’s rugby.“I want to have 30 players and another

squad of 30 we can feed off; that is what wewant to do, we want the cycle to grow. Bynext year, when WP call on us again, wewant to have between 6 and 10 WP girls, be-cause the talent lies in Mitchell’s Plain.“There is talent in Mitchell’s Plain, but it

is just untapped.”
