Welcome

Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages

are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us.

Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy.

VISION STATEMENT

Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a

Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.

MISSION OBJECTIVES

•To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and

welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst;

• To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;

• To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among

parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;

• To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God

within and beyond the Parish;

• To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our

assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to

generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

Church entrance (narthex).

As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship.

In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times.

Wireless hearing amplifiers are available.

Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the

church on the opposite side to the entrance.

Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the

service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make

an appointment.

The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the

Mass.

The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to

those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also

customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus.

You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and

prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins.

We adore you,

most Holy Lord Jesus Christ

A Reflection

Richard William Church 1815-1890: Sometimes described as ‘the Anglican Newman’, Richard

Church was born in Lisbon and brought up in Florence, going up to Wadham College, Oxford, in

1833, the year of John Keble’s (q.v.) Assize Sermon marking the beginning of the Oxford Movement,

of which he wrote the classic history. Elected a fellow of Oriel in 1838 he remained there until he

became Rector of Whatley in Somerset in 1852. From there he was appointed as Dean of St. Paul’s,

where he exercised a notable ministry as a preacher and teacher.

THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

We celebrate today the greatest gift ever made to man. I am not speaking of things done for him, and

without him. I am not speaking of the gift of the Father’s Eternal Son to be man’s Redeemer, Brother,

Atonement, Pattern. But the gift of today was the greatest change that was ever made to what man is

in himself, in his powers and spiritual endowments, in what he can himself become. There have been

other great revolutions in his history; crises and epochs which made things heneforth new, in the

various stages of that order by which God has been bringing back the word unto Himself. There was

the Law, the long discipline of Prophecy, the Cross, the Resurrection, the Ascension. There was the

opening message of the Gospel to the Gentiles, the breaking down the middle wall which had

separated mankind, the transformation of the Synagogue into the Church Universal. Of course all

these profuse outpourings of God’s bounty have altered indefinitely our condition, our hopes, our

motives. And there were, besides them, other gifts belonging to what we call the sphere of nature, put

into the hands of man, which make him what he is: the homely and familiar arts which so touched the

imagination of the ancient poets, and raised their wonder more than they do ours; the discoveries,

the capacities, the knowledge of later times, at which even we who possess them, stand amazed.

But here is a gift of a different order. It brings with it, indeed, light; it brings with it truth. But the

essential and characteristic part of it is, that it brings with it changes within us, - changes unthought

of, - in the moral and spiritual nature and capacities of man. It is a gift, altering and raising the

powers by which he chooses, and wills, and acts, - the affections, the heart, the character, which make

him a moral being, with power to do right, to feel right, to wish and desire right. It is the gift which

opens to him, in a degree unknown before, the life of holiness, the life which makes him really like

God, really able to know God, to love Him, to live with Him. It is the gift which, in the language of

Holy Scripture, has renewed, has created afresh, our nature as men, Christmas is the commemoration

of the birthday, the new birth in time, of the Only-begotten, the second Adam, the Head of redeemed

Humanity. Pentecost is the commemoration of the birthday of the new birth of Humanity itself; of

the day when a new divine power came into the very inmost souls and beings of men, changing them

from their old selves, filling them with new energies fresh from the very heart of God, begetting them

anew from the deadness of sin, giving them, by a new birth through the Spirit, the power to become

the sons of God.

The Liturgy of the Word

THE FIRST READING Be seated

Reader A reading from the Book of Acts.

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly

from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire

house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a

tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to

speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews

from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd

gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native

language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are

speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?

Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,

Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to

Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs - in our

own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed

HIGH MASS | 11

Page 12: Pentecost

and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and

said, "They are filled with new wine." But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his

voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be

known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for

it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet

Joel: 'In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in

those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents

in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The

sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's

great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be

saved.'" Acts 2:1-21

Reader The word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

PSALM A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

O Lord, how manifold are your works! in wisdom you have made them all;

the earth is full of your creatures.

Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number,

creatures both small and great.

All of them look to you to give them their food in due season. Antiphon

Page 13: Pentecost

You send forth your Spirit, and they are created;

and so you renew the face of the earth.

May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; may the Lord rejoice in all his works.

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will praise my God while I have my being.

Antiphon

Psalm 104:25-26, 28, 31-32, 34

EPISTLE READING

Sub-deacon A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans.

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a

spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When

we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are

children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if,

in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Romans 8:14-17

Sub-deacon The word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA A cantor begins the alleluia; all repeat it thereafter.

Alleluia. O send forth thy Spirit and they shall be made: and thou shalt renew the face of

the earth. Alleluia. Come, Holy Ghost, and fill the hearts of thy faithful people, and

kindle in them the fire of thy love. Emitte Spiritum (Mode V)

Page 15: Pentecost

HOLY GOSPEL All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." Jesus said to

him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever

has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not

believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do

not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I

am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of

the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the

works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the

Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the

Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. If you love me, you will keep

my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate,

to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive,

because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you,

and he will be in you.

[I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy

Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind

you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not

give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be

afraid."] John 14:8-17 (25-27)

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy

tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to

suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect

sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to

continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming

again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks

to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which

is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” +

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks,

he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new

covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins:

Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with

these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath

commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious

death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again

with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word

and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be

unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.

lllAll We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee,

Lord our God.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and

thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and

bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may

worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled

with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church

may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the

same Jesus Christ our Lord;

By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and

glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end.

lllAll Amen.

THE MOTHERS’ UNION

EDWARDIAN STRAWBERRY TEA

Sunday June 23rd - noon to 2pm

-local strawberries

-home-made sponge cake

-real whipped cream

-fancy sandwiches

-live music

Back by popular demand is the Mothers’ Union Edwardian Strawberry Tea to be held Sunday,

June 23, after High Mass, in the Parish Hall. It will be replacing the normal coffee hour on that

Sunday. Again we will be offering home-made sandwiches, strawberry shortcake with freshly

picked BC strawberries and whipping cream, and tea and coffee. There will be musical

entertainment and recitations.

It is hoped that parishioners will get into the spirit of Edwardian England by wearing a fancy hat

or fascinator for the women; bowtie, cravat, waistcoat and/or boater for the men.

If you have holiday plans for that weekend and know you will be away, but would like to

purchase a ticket for someone who cannot afford the $10 charge, this would be most

appreciated. Last year we were able to give away approximately 10 tickets.

Children under 8 are free. The proceeds

will be donated to the MU Northern

RECTOR’S STUDY LEAVE UPDATE – Week 3

It has been a remarkable and oftentimes moving

week. I interviewed, at length, ten parishioners who

represented the breadth of St. James’ membership.

Each was given, well in advance, the topics and

questions I wanted to explore, with supporting

background documentation for those who were

really keen. (Please contact the Office if you would

like to see the resources in use for these interviews.)

I was moved that everyone I asked leaped at the

opportunity to be interviewed and the extent to

which each parishioner had prepared for the

conversation and was willing to speak freely and

with candor.

Six topics were identified for discussion: Essentials

for faith; discipleship, engagement, evangelism and

transformation at St. James; and to conclude, the

consultation process and sabbatical review as it is

unfolding in the Parish. Here are a few of the

questions to give you a feel for the ground we

covered during the week:

How did you come to faith in Jesus Christ?

When and how did you become a ‘member’ of St.

James’?

What capacity and desire do you have to deepen/

reduce your commitment and involvement?

How would you describe St. James’ to an enquirer

who had no experience of the Parish?

If there is one thing you could change about St.

James’ what would it be? And how can you

participate in that change?

Now it will take a few weeks to make a presentation

of my findings to the Wardens and develop a plan

for communicating with the Parish as a whole.

Please let me, or the Wardens, know if you would

like more information, or if you are interested in

helping us during this season of review.

With gratitude, Fr. Mark.

PASTORAL LETTER FROM THE BISHOP

If you would like a copy of the Pastoral Letter written

by Bishop Michael Ingham, there are copies available in

the Narthex printed on purple paper. Bishop Michael

encourages everyone to participate in the Truth and

Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s National Event

in Vancouver this September 18-21.

“Our Indigenous brothers and sisters deserve and need

more from us than shame and guilt. They need to know

that we can face the truth about ourselves. They need to

know that we can move beyond old attitudes and

assumptions. They need to know that we are prepared

to walk with them in friendship and partnership.”

JOINT PENTECOST LETTER

Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church

of Canada, has issued a joint pastoral letter for

Pentecost with Bishop Susan C. Johnson, National

Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada.

Copies of this letter, printed on purple paper, are

available in the Narthex.

FREE VIEWING OF WE WERE CHILDREN

June 11 7:00pm

For over 100 years, Aboriginal children in Canada

were legally required to attend church-run

boarding schools, an assimilationist practice now

regarded as a national and cultural tragedy. We Were

Children tells the heartbreaking true story of Lyna

Hart and Glen Anaquod, removed from their homes

at the ages of four and six and forced to adapt to a

strange, threatening new world. Blending stunning

Donation. Come celebrate the talents and

achievements of our students!

PAX

Everyone has seen the beautiful Easter issue of our

quarterly news magazine, freely available to all St.

James’ parishioners and to our many friends. For

attractive content, superlative design, and

professional editing, PAX has few if any peers among

parish church publications. Yet PAX exists on a tiny

budget, relying almost entirely on the generosity of a

few parishioners: some provide funds to pay for a

whole issue, some offer a donation as a kind of

subscription. We currently print about 300 copies of

each issue, at a cost of nearly $900. Contributions,

such as a regular subscription of $15.00 for the year,

or a gift of any amount, are needed to continue PAX.

Please consider how you can support this work of

ministry and outreach.

DONATIONS NEEDED FOR GARDENS

Compost Sale June 17th $5 bag

We are currently collecting donations for the

upkeep of the gardens. On June 17th at 7:30am

we will have fifteen yards of screened compost

delivered. Part of it will be bagged up and sold

and most of it will be spread into the gardens at

St. Luke’s, St. James’ Place and in the Lady

Garden. The work will be done by the

YouthWorks students who are renting the Crypt,

along with Master Gardener volunteers. If you

are able to loan us a wheelbarrow or some traffic

safety cones, please let us know.

Harvest Power will be donating the compost, but

we need to pay the trucking fees. We would also

like to purchase some new plants, shrubs,

planters and a bench for the Chapel Walkway. If

you would like to volunteer in the garden with

the Master Gardeners, please leave a message at

the office. Join us for some fresh air, exercise,

good company, and the opportunity to learn

more about gardening.

Check out the new St. Francis statue in the

Chapel Walkway Garden, donated by a St. Luke’s

resident. Please tell your friends and neighbours

about the compost sale!

Leaving A LegacyLeaving A LegacyLeaving A LegacyLeaving A Legacy

Many of us would like to leave something behind to ensure that the St. James’ we know will continue for many years, but as retirees

we don’t see how that is possible.

By using Canada Revenue’s generous tax treatment of charitable gifts, it is possible to increase giving, reduce income taxes and increase your own annual income now, while still leaving a legacy through your will.

After High Mass at 12:30 on May 26 there will be a presentation by a Certified Financial Planner in the May Gutteridge Room. Ed Fidler will explain how the tax laws can work in your favour when you plan

ahead. A light lunch will be provided.

It would be appreciated if you would notify the office that you plan to attend, but that isn’t strictly necessary – just come and listen.
