*Call to Worship: Rev. Jenny Drewitz & Congregation

Lift up your eyes, seeking to know your God. Attune your spirit to the One in whom we dwell. God’s love surrounds us here today. God calls us to be children of light. We belong to the day when we have faith. We live confidently in the hope of salvation. We seek to be faithful to the best we know. We want to invest the talents God gives us. Faithfulness gives us a sense of greater abundance. Doing justice adds to our sense of worth and dignity. We are here to build up one another. May our worship encourage each of us today.

Welcome to First Baptist Church Halifax! If you are visiting with us today, please know how glad we are to have you with us as we worship God together. We invite you to complete a visitor’s card, located in the hymnal rack in front of you, and place it in the offering plate later in the service. You are also invited to stay for coffee and conversation immediately following this morning’s service. We gather in the Parlor, just behind the Sanctuary.

*Prayer of Approach Holy One, we long to be faithful stewards of your

abundant grace. We are called to serve each other in love and humility and serve your world with wisdom and energy. Forgive us when we stumble over pride, when our words and actions are not guided by love. Turn our hearts when we act in folly. Restore our energy when it is gone. Sometimes, many times, O God, our efforts fail. But your abundant grace is strong and eternal, and forgiveness is ours through Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God. Amen.

Before the mountains were born, you brought forth the earth and the world; you are God without beginning or end. R You turn humankind back into dust and say: “Go back, creatures of the earth!” For in your sight a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone, no more than a watch in the night. You sweep us away like a dream, fleeting as the grass that springs up in the morning—in the morning it sprouts, buy by evening it has withered and died. Make us realize how short life is that we may gain wisdom of heart. R

Epistle: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 (pg. 205) Peggy Dunbar *Gradual Hymn

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. *Recessional Hymn:

Acknowledgement I wish to express my sincere thanks for the organizers and participants for the Retirement Liturgy and Reception held in recognition of my twelve years as part-time Minister of Visitation last Sunday at First Baptist, Halifax. The attendance and expressions of best wishes was overwhelming. The gift of an engraved stained glass panel was unexpected and will be even more greatly appreciated when I am able to arrange for a “hanging”! My wife, Arlene, wants to thank you for the beautiful plant. Thank you also for the “novel” idea of a book containing many greetings and best wishes, although I must confess there were times when I failed to recognize the person they were writing about! It has been a wonderful twelve years and I give thanks to God for the health and strength that was given as well as for the many friendships that developed and will remain for a long time. Sincerely, Nelson A Metcalfe, Minister of Visitation
