St. John the Baptist Catholic Church • Somonauk, Illinois
Dear Parishioners,
Happy Pentecost! The Feast of Pentecost is called
by many the birthday of the Church. That’s because
it was at this moment when the Apostles received
the Holy Spirit that they received the power to go
forth and build the church. They were no longer
afraid and no longer made excuses, but were
convicted to confect the sacraments and share
the Gospel. The Holy Spirit with all His power
came and set the Apostles on fire and then the
people watched them burn with the love of Christ.
That same thing is meant to happen to us. Like
the Apostles many are scared and locked in their
homes. Easter Sunday Evening Jesus found the
Apostles locked in the Upper Room. What would
have happened if the Apostles had never left the
Upper Room? The church would not have been
born. We too are meant to not give in to the
negativity in the news and the fear mongers that
are all around us. We have taken great precautions
during this time of pandemic, but as the
coronavirus becomes more and more under control,
we need to have courage to leave our homes for
at least the essentials. And, the Church has been
deemed essential. We have now been celebrating
daily Mass with ten of you present for a week and
this weekend we continue to do so for our Sunday
Masses. The great hope is that moving forward
this next week we may hear about more and
more of these restrictions being lessened. If fear is
what is keeping you from Church at this time my
message to you is the same message throughout
the papacy of Pope St. John Paul II, “Don’t be
afraid.” As the spots we are allowed in the church
increase I encourage you to come. We are taking
all the necessary precautions with hand sanitizer
for the faithful and the priest before and after
Mass and masks. We also disinfect the church after
each Mass. Pentecost is about the unleashing of the
Holy Spirit upon all of us and upon the Church.
May the Holy Spirit come upon us and the Church
and bring us back fully to the public celebration
of the Mass. “Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts
of your faithful and kindle in them the fire
of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall
be created. And You shall renew the face of the
earth.” Mass will continue to be livestreamed
at www.stjbsom.org/mass-livestream.
God Bless,
Fr. Butler
