I, Claudia Th is one-act play

runs just over an hour and introduces you to Claudia, a pre-teen, who is still reeling from her parents’ di-vorce. Her father is getting remarried, she has a science fair pro-ject coming due, and she is in the physical and emotional throes of puberty. Finding refuge in the basement of her school, Claudia discovers the pain at the centre of her brim-ming child’s heart. Some important adults in Claudia’s life – her grandfather, her fath-er’s new girlfriend, and the school custodian – help shed light on her situation.

Th ese characters are brought to life by one actress who wears a diff erent mask to por-tray each individual. Th e masks were made by local artist Robin Wiltse specifi cally for this production, and Kaslo resident Lynn van Deursen is very excited to have this opportunity to bring them to life as she shares Claudia’s story with you, the audience.

I, Claudia by Kris-ten Th omson will be shown at the Langham Th eatre on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $12 and available at Sunnyside Naturals and Willow Home Gallery.

Jane’s Walk will be held on Satur-day, May 5 and Sunday, May 6, start-ing at Oso Negro Cafe at 2 pm and 1 pm respectively. Many people in Nel-son and around the world will take to the street to answer Jane Jacobs’ famous call to “get out and walk”. Th e 6th annual Jane’s Walk is a chance to explore Nelson’s neighbourhoods with fresh eyes and a curious mind.

Created in 2007 in Toronto by friends of the urban thinker and author Jane Jacobs, the free, volunteer-led urban walks have grown exponentially from 27 walks the fi rst year to over 500 walks around the world – from Calgary to Canberra and Sao Paulo to Saskatoon – in over 75 cities and 16 countries.

Walks are as varied as the people taking part, and they create the time and space for people to connect, share, and develop ideas about where their communities and cities are at and where they are headed.

Poker Pedal ReturnsWant to take Mom out for a bike ride along a beautiful

river, visit a crystal blue lake and somehow end up with a royal fl ush? Th at’s right, the Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Society and Slocan Valley Recreation are hosting their annual Poker Pedal and this year it’s on Mother’s Day – Sunday, May 13 with registration beginning at 11 am. So make sure the bike is ready to go and come out for a lei-surely ride on the Slocan Valley Rail Trail with family and friends and play a rolling game of cards!

Th is year everyone will be cycling from Perrys Siding to Slocan Lake and back, stopping at fi ve locations where they pluck a card from the deck. At the end of the ride there’ll be refreshments and snacks waiting. Admission is free and thanks to the support of the BCRPA’s Move for Health program there’ll be draw prizes waiting. Of course, the best poker hand get’s a special gift as well.

So why not come and be a part of this refreshingly healthy pastime? For those who may think the route is a little long, you are welcome to turn around when you feel most comfortable. Earth Day Rally Kootenays for a Pipeline-Free BC, teamed up with Keep

Jumbo Wild to launch the largest Earth day rally in the Kootenays. Over 600 people came together in front of the Nelson City Hall on Sunday, April 22 to celebrate their roles as stewards of our BC Northern Gateway and local Jumbo Glacier.

Diverse organizations, groups and people of all ages participated, along with their signs, banners, petitions, props, songs and messages. Th e rally closed with a peace-ful march.

Members from the Kootenays for a Pipeline-Free BC announced upcoming events – including an award win-ning fi lm, On the Line, to be shown by the fi lm maker at the Castlegar Library on Monday, May 7 and Tuesday, May 8 at the Nelson United Church, and an educational event to be presented at the Capitol Th eatre in Nelson on Wednesday, May 30, featuring Andrew Nikiforuk, award winning author of the book, Tar Sands and Executive Chair of the Coastal First Nations, Art Sterritt.

Nelson Garden FestivalIf gardens are good teachers, there will be lots to learn at

the 11th Annual Nelson Garden Festival on Saturday, May 12 on downtown Baker Street.

“We have more vendors than ever,” says one of the festi-vals organizers Glyn Violini. “Each year the festival grows and really, community agriculture prospers.”

Violini, a heather and rose vendor who helped start the fi rst garden festival, has seen the event grow from a few tables in 2001, to more than 40 vendors and commun-ity groups today. Sponsored by the EcoSociety, the garden festival will again feature a stunning array of perennials, annuals, veggies, herbs and fl owers as well as garden ac-cessories and custom furniture, manure and fertilizers.

“Th is is where you’ll fi nd hardy local varieties for your garden from the region’s prime growers,” says Violini. “We always hold it on Mother’s Day weekend so you can fi nd something for mom, too.”
