Itiseasyforpeopletocreate,produce,andprofitwhentoolsandspacearereadilyavailable.Thatisastruefortheonceidleteenagernowengagedintrainingorartisticexpressionasitisfortheentrepreneurwhosebusinessbenefitsfromloweroverhead,andthenetworkingthatisinherentinacoworkingenvironment. TheSlocanValley,foralongtime,hasbeenacommunitythathasfosteredcreativity,arts,andfabrication.Partofbuildinganewsustainablefutureforthevalleycouldbecreatingcoworkingspacesandtools.Therearemanyexampleslocally,nationally,andinternationallythathavebeensuccessful.Wecanlooktotheseprojectsasawayforwardforourcommunities.

  • ManyhackerspacessupportfreesoftwareManyhackerspacesparticipateintheuseanddevelopmentoffreesoftware,openhardware,andalternativemedia.Theyareoftenphysicallylocatedininfoshops,socialcenters,adulteducationcenters,publicschools,oronuniversitycampuses,butmayrelocatetoindustrialorwarehousespacewhentheyneedmoreroom.HackerspaceswithopenmembershipbecamecommoninGermanyinthe90sintheorbitoftheGermanChaosComputerClub,withtheCbasebeingprobablythemostimpressiveexample.Theconcept,however,waslimitedtolessthanadozenspaceswithinGermany,anddidnotspreadbeyondbordersatfirst.MostlikelythiswasbecauseinitialfoundingcostswereprohibitiveforsmallgroupswithoutthesupportofalargeorganizationliketheCCC.In2006,PaulBohmcameupwithafundraisingstrategybasedontheStreetPerformerProtocoltobuildMetalabinVienna,Austria,andbecameitsfoundingdirector.HeandothersstartedtheHackerspaces.orgcommunityin2007whichmaintainsalistofmanyhackerspaces,anddocumentspatternsonhowtostartandrunthem.Asof2012,thereareanestimated700to1,100activehackerspacesallovertheworldandthenumbersaregrowing.MostrecentlytheadventofcrowdfundingandKickstarterhaveputthetoolsrequiredtobuildhackerspaceswithinreachofanevenwideraudience.RightnowthosetoolsareforexampleusedbyBilalGhalib,whohadpreviouslyworkedonaHackerspacedocumentary,andotherstobringthehackerspaceconcepttotheMiddleEast.[3]

    Functions Thespecificactivitiesthattakeplaceathackerspacesvaryfromplacetoplace.Ingeneral,hackerspacesfunctionascentersforpeerlearningandknowledgesharing,intheformofworkshops,presentations,andlectures.Theyusuallyalsooffersocialactivitiesfortheirmembers,suchasgamenightsandparties.Theytypicallyprovidespaceformemberstoworkontheirindividualprojects,ortocollaborateongroupprojectswithothermembers.Hackerspacesmayalsooperatecomputertoollendinglibraries,[4]orphysicaltoollendinglibraries.Thebuildingorfacilitythehackerspaceoccupiesisimportant,becauseitprovidesphysicalinfrastructurethatmembersneedtocompletetheirprojects.Inadditiontospace,mosthackerspacesprovideelectricalpower,computerserversandnetworkingwithInternetconnectivity.Wellequippedhackerspacesmayprovidemachinetools,audioequipment,videoprojectors,gameconsoles,electronicinstrumentation(suchasoscilloscopesandsignalgenerators),electroniccomponentsandrawmaterialsforhacking,andvariousothertoolsforelectronicsfabricationandbuildingthings.[5]Somehackerspacesprovidefoodstorageandfoodpreparationequipment,andmayteachcoursesinbasicoradvancedcooking.Toolsandmaterialforsewing,craft,andartarealsoimportantatmanyhackerspaces.MostrecentstudiesofhackerspaceinChinawhereinternetisheavilycensoredsuggestthatnewbusinessesandorganizedtechconferencesthereservetointerveneinthestatusquo"fromwithin".ThefirsthackerspaceopenedinShanghaiin2010.Thereafter,anetworkofhackerspacesemerged,nourishinganemergingmakerculture.Bydesigningopentechnologiesanddevelopingnewbusinesses,

  • Chinesemakersmakeuseofthesystem,makefunofit,alteringitandprovokingit.DIYmakersoftenbringandaligncontradictoryideastogether,suchascopycatandopensource,manufacturingandDIY,individualempowermentandcollectivechange.Indoingso,theycraftasubjectpositionbeyondthecommonrhetoricthatChinesecitizenslackcreativity.Asasiteofindividualempowerment,hackerspaceandDIYmakingenablepeopletoremaketheverysocietalnormsandmaterialinfrastructuresthatundergirdtheirworkandlivelihood.[6]

    Organization Theindividualcharacterofahackerspaceisdeterminedbyitsmembers.Manyhackerspacesaregovernedbyelectedboardsselectedbyactivemembersingoodstanding.Electedofficersmayservepredeterminedterms,andhelpdirectdecisionmakingwithregardstopurchasingnewequipment,recruitingnewmembers,formulatingpolicy,conformingtosafetyrequirements,andotheradministrativeissues.Membershipfeesareusuallythemainincomeofahackerspace,butsomealsoacceptexternalsponsors.SomehackerspacesintheUShave501(c)3status(ortheequivalentintheirjurisdiction),whileothershavechosentoforgotaxexemptstatus.[7]Universityaffiliatedhackerspacesoftendonotchargeanexplicitfee,butaregenerallylimitedtostudents,staff,oralumni,althoughguestsfromotherhackerspacesareusuallywelcometovisit.Somehackerspacesacceptvolunteerlaborinlieuofmembershipfees,especiallyfromfinanciallylimitedparticipants.Inaddition,somehackerspacesearnincomefromsponsoringandstaffinghightechfleamarkets,wheremembersofthegeneralpublicmaybuyandsellnewandusedequipmentandsupplies.Thereisaloose,informaltraditionatmanyhackerspacesofwelcomingvisitorsfromothersimilarorganizations,whetheracrosstownorinternationally.Freeexchangeofideas,skills,andknowledgeareencouraged,especiallyatperiodicgatheringssometimescalledbuildnightsoropenhousedays.

    EthicsHackerspacesarewidelydefinedonhackerspaces.orgascommunityoperatedphysicalplaces,wherepeoplecanmeetandworkontheirprojects.Theexactfunctioningofthespacevariesfromplacetoplaceandisdeterminedbyitsmembersandwhilethereisnoblueprintorsetofguidelinestocreateahackerspace,theygenerallyfollowahackerethic,[8]whichincludefreedom,inthesenseofautonomyaswellasoffreeaccessandcirculationofinformationdistrustofauthority,thatis,opposingthetraditional,industrialtopdownstyleoforganizationembracingtheconceptoflearningbydoingandpeertopeerlearningprocessesasopposedtoformalmodesoflearningsharing,solidarityandcooperation.[9]

  • DifficultiesIn2009therewasadebateaboutinclusionismandexclusionismwithinthehackerspacescommunity,JohannesGrenzfurthnerandFrankApunktSchneiderreleasedacriticalpamphletaboutthisstruggle.[10]Thediscussionisstillongoing.Hackerspacescanrunintodifficultieswithbuildingcodesorotherplanningregulations,whichmaynotbedesignedtohandletheirscopeofactivities.AnewhackerspaceinNashua,NewHampshire,forexample,wasshutdownbythecityforafteraninspectionin2011.Themainissueswereventingofheatandfumes.Itreopenedafterworkwasdonetothebuilding.[11]ThedifficultieswithopeningHackerSpacesandMakerSpaceswithinnonprofitorganizations,suchasschoolsandpubliclibrariesincludecost,space,liability,andavailabilityofpersonnel.[12]

    NotableHackerspacesAdirectoryismaintainedatthehackerspaces.org[13]wiki.Forsomeothernotableexamples,seeCategory:Hackerspace.Overtheyearsmanyhackerspaceshavegrownsignificantlyinmembership,operationalbudgets,andlocalmediaattention.Manyhavealsohelpedestablishotherhackerspacesinnearbylocations.

    cbase(1995)fromBerlinisrecognizedasoneofthefirstindependent,standalonehackerspacesintheworld,notaffiliatedwithaschool,university,orcompany.Wiredwritesthat"Europeangroups,particularlyinGermany,havealongtraditionofthiskindofactivity".[14]AnotherknownGermanhackerspaceisRaumZeitLabor,organizerofTrollcon.[15]

    Metalab,foundedin2006,isgenerallyconsideredtohavepioneeredthefundingprinciplesthatenabledrapidspreadoftheconcept.[16]

    TechShopisthefirstchainofcommercialhackerspaces.ItwaslaunchedinOctober2006.AsofOctober2012,thereweresixTechShoplocationsintheUS:threeinCaliforniaandoneeachinNorthCarolina,Michigan,andTexas,thelastapartnershipwiththeLowe'shomeimprovementchain.

    Men'sShedsnowhasovera1000activespacesinAustralia,Scotland,England,Ireland,FinlandandGreece.[17]Insteadofseeingthemselvesas"Hackers"theydescribethemselvesas"sheders"and"sheding".TheMen'sShedsmovementismanywaysparallel"Hackerspaces"intheiraims,albeitwhilstopentoanyoneregardlessofageorgender,theytendtoadvertisethemselvesas"Meninsheds".InsomewaystheycanbeseenastheflipsideofWorkingmen'sclub'sastheytheircommunityisdrawnfromasimilaragegroupandtheiroriginalaimsaresimilar:providerecreationandeducationforworkingclassmenandtheirfamilies.

    InAugust2007,agroupofNorthAmericanhackersvisitedEurope"togetasenseforthepotentialofEuropean'hackerspaces'",andupontheirreturn,thegroupsNYCResistorandHacDCweresetupinlate2007,withNoisebridgefollowinginfall2008.[14][18]

  • TokyoHackerSpacewasinitiatedin2009.[19]Safecast.org(aglobalopendatanetworkforionizingradiationmonitoring)wasformedaroundprototypingeffortstherefollowingtheFukushimaDaiichinucleardisaster.[20]

    ThefirsthackerspaceXinchejianwasestablishedinShanghaiinthefallof2010.ThereafterhackerspaceshavegrowninnumerouscitiesincludingBeijing,Shenzhen,Ningbo,HangzhouandGuangzhou.ChinesemakersbecameinternationallyvisiblewhenthefirstMakerCarnivalwashostedinBeijingin2012.[21]

    MakerSpaceshavealsobeguntoenterintopublicschoolsintheUS.ThefirsthighschooltoopenatrueMakerSpacewasinSebastopol,California,[citationneeded]andnowevenmiddleschoolsarestartingtofollowthetrend.WhiteHillMiddleschoolinFairfax,CaliforniahasnowopeneduptheirownMakerSpacewithaclasscalled"MakersandHackers".[22]ThefirstpubliclibrarytoopenaMakerSpaceistheFayettevilleFreeLibraryandislocatedinNewYorkState.[23]

    CoworkingspaceinBerlinCoworkingisastyleofworkthatinvolvesasharedworkingenvironment,oftenanoffice,andindependentactivity.Unlikeinatypicalofficeenvironment,thosecoworkingareusuallynotemployedbythesameorganization.[1]Typicallyitisattractivetoworkathomeprofessionals,independentcontractors,orpeoplewhotravelfrequentlywhoendupworkinginrelativeisolation.[2]Coworkingisalsothesocialgatheringofagroupofpeoplewhoarestillworkingindependently,butwhosharevalues,[3]andwhoareinterestedinthesynergythatcanhappenfromworkingwithlikemindedtalentedpeopleinthesamespace.[4][5]
