This is how life forall of us, and for the Association, proceeds. We deal with the hand we are dealt; theAlumnae Association and our friends withinthat association help us to keep going. Forthat we are grateful.

We are happy to report that our relationshipwith Penn Hall/Menno Haven has continuedto grow and become stronger. This is anencouraging fact as it will help the Penn HallAlumnae Association carry on into the futurefor as long as is possible.

The next Alumnae Board Meeting is beingheld in Chambersburg at the end of April. There is much old business and new businessto be addressed. We will be discussing andattempting to determine the timing of our nextreunion and those to follow, costs of mail andpostage, membership matters and other issues.

Over the last year, because of increased duesand donations the association continues to dowell and we have been reenergized. In orderto continue in that vein, it is important for allof us to continue to pay our dues and to con-tribute to the best of our ability. Copied from March 1964 Pillar

Miss Jean Ramsey, a faculty member well known to many alumnaesince the beginning of her teaching career at Penn Hall in 1946, isshown at the right instructing a drama student in the proper applicationof make-up. She has had broad experience in her field, both before andduring her Penn Hall tenure.

Miss Ramsey was born inMontreal and educated atMcGill University and JudsonCollege where she attained theB.A. degree. After college, shemoved on to the Yale DramaSchool and received the Masterof Fine Arts from the University. While at Yale, she had opportu-nities to act and direct plays aswell as three years of writingand acting over the YankeeNetwork of radio stations. Shehas since done additional workat Summer Sessions ofBennington College Alabama

Polytechnic Institute (Auburn) and the State University of Iowa.

During her third year at Yale, Pearl Harbor brought war and MissRamsey’s decision to enter the service with the U.S.O. after graduation. She was sent to Trinidad, then to manage a large club in British Guiana.Americans were few and far between. Her staff consisted of Chinese,Portuguese, East Indians, Africans and British Colonials. The taskinvolved running not only the U.S.O. Social Club, but also a restaurantand dormitories for American servicemen staying in the capital city ofGeorgetown overnight. After fourteen months there, she was sent to St.Thomas (Charlotte Amalie), Virgin Islands, after a short leave in theUnited States. She helped supervise the building of a club serving theArmy, Navy, Marines, Seabees and Coast Guard. In 1944, she erected asmall theatre at Hickam Field in Honolulu- modified Quonset hut style.Later, in the fall of 1945, she moved on to Manila and directed activitiesof five bands and five entertainments groups under contract .She orga-nized native Filipino entertainment units. Then in August of 1946, MissRamsey resigned from U.S.O. and accepted a position at Penn Hall. Shehas been a valuable member of the faculty since that time.

Miss Ramsey has traveled throughout the world, so extensively as tobe impossible to include an account here. She now spends her holidays

from Penn Hall in Maine and Montréal.

The curriculum under her responsibility includes the Speech andDrama and the Radio-Television Departments. Normally, four produc-tions a year are presented by student dramatic groups. One of theseproductions is a series of one-act plays directed by students from thePlay Production class. A regular Penn Hall News broadcast is present-ed over a local Chambersburg radio station. In addition, a ten-minuteradio program is presented every two weeks during the second semes-ter. Usually once a year,Miss Ramsey’s classes present a program over a Lancaster, PA televi-sion station.

Miss Ramsey lived to just shy of her 99 birthday, and passed away onJuly 13, 2004. She was life long friend with Miss Marguerite Cookewho taught music at Penn Hall from 1932 until 1971 when she andMiss Ramsey retired to spend summer months at their cottage inWilton, Maine and winters in St. Petersburg, FL. Miss Cooke lived tobe 93 and passed away on January 24, 1999. They were both fromCanada and were born the same year 1905.

A Tribute to Miss Jean RamseyBy Jo Jac Bludworth Briggs JC`53

The curtain rises, the production begins, the curtain falls, theclapping finally ends. Brava! Miss Jean Ramsay, director extraor-dinaire.

I spoke with Miss Ramsey shortly before she died. Samestrong yet melodious Canadian voice. She was 99 years old. “Iam ready to go,” she said. I told her a bit of the effect she hadhad on a 17 year-old Texas girls’ life. She quite literally, trans-formed it, from angry teenager with tremendous energy. MissRamsey shaped that hostility into an endless river of creativeforce. As time flowed by, became a nun, whore, the protector ofthe Frank family and on and on for Broadway. I had many greatteachers, Stella Adler, Uta Hagen and of course the best atCarnegie-Mellon University. But no one touched my inner core,my creative sprit.

So once again, I pay tribute to a great director, a caringteacher an inspiration. Brava! Miss Ramsey. The curtain may bedown but we, your actors know the play still goes on with youdirecting among the wings. Farewell and God speed.

Margaret Eyer passed away on January 24, 2012 atage 79. She was a native of Chambersburg having grad-uated from the local high school in 1950. Following ayear at Wilson College, Mrs. Eyer transferred to PennState University. An Unfinished LifeMarianne Lynn Ambrey was from Ontario, Canada she gradu-ated from Penn Hall Preparatory school in 1966. After Penn Hallshe went on to Katy Gibbs in Boston. Upon completion, shespent the summer working in San Francisco. In September, thewanderlust led her to apply to Pan-Am as a trans-continentalstewardess. She was accepted and was in her sixth week oftraining when she called and asked Patricia Powell BeemanP`66 too meet her in New York for dinner the night prior to herfirst in-service training flight from Kennedy to Caracas,Venezuela. Bob Franklin (her love from Toronto flew in fromMichigan and what a grand reunion the three had. Mariannewas excited about her job.

Later that night, December 12, 1968, she boarded Pan Am Flight217, a Boeing 707 along with 51 passengers. The plane explod-ed while descending for landing at Maquetia Airport. City lightsmay have caused an optical illusion that affected the pilots.

Patricia Powell Beeman P`66 attended the memorial service, for herthe Wednesday before Christmas, and needless to say, her parents werein that awful, empty stupor that sud-den death prompts. Patricia writes inthe March 1969 Pillar “She was trulyone of the greatest gals I’ve everknown. Her enthusiasm and integri-ty were an inspiration at Penn Halland the years afterwards.”

A friend of Nancy KliefothMcAllister JC`72, (a Pan Am flightattendant herself) was two weeksbehind Marianne at the Pan AmFlight Academy, told Nancy theclasses were numb when the newscame to them about the Caracascrash, and, it was the first and onlytime a trainee was killed in a crash.

Diana Rowe Doran of Wellesley, MA died November 6, 2011. Shewas 79. Born and raised in Fredericksburg, Virginia, she had lived inWellesley for 55 years, raising a family and contributing to the commu-nity in her unassuming but inspirational manner.

Diane began the study of piano at the ageof four, playing in her first recital soonthereafter and later discovering she wasamong a small minority with perfect pitch. At thirteen, she performed her first soloconcert at Mary Washington College inFredericksburg. She graduated from PennHall Preparatory School and Junior col-lege, where she was captain of the basket-ball team, president of the athletic associa-tion and named “Penn Hall Girl,” theschool’s highest honor.

After receiving a degree in applied musicfrom Randolph-Macon Women’s College,

where she performed a solo concert that included the works ofBeethoven, Chopin, Debussy and Liszt, she continued her study of clas-sical music with Erno Balogh, a protégé of Bela Bartok and teacher atthe Peabody Conservatory. Concurrently, she provided dinner music-playing popular standards-at the Officers Club at Quantico Marine basein Virginia. She was invited to perform yet another solo concert atMary Washington College.

Subsequently signed by MCA, she played their hotel circuit for a briefperiod until her marriage. She later resumed her career, playing at theWellesley Inn and other Boston-area establishments. These includedthe Park Plaza Hotel n Boston and the Sheraton Hotel in Lexington, where she provided Sunday brunch music. During this time, she stud-ied at the New England Conservatory of Music. In addition, she was

the accompanist for the dance classes at Wellesley College for nearly adecade.

With much determination and genuine desire to learn more about theinstrument she played, she enrolled in the study of piano tuning andrepair. She then became a professional piano tuner in addition to herother activities.

In 1986, she collaborated with her eighty-six-year-old mother to publishthe book Letters from a World War I Aviator, a compilation of herfather’s letters and photographs from his service in the 147th

Aerosquadron, along with Eddie Richenbacker. The book was criticallyacclaimed by the Smithsonian Institution’s Air & Space magazine (aswell as sold in its bookstore for many years) and by other experts inWorld War I aviation, nationally and internationally.

In 1995, Diana presented her children with a recording of a selection ofher piano music. Titled Cocktail Piano Reflections, the CD was so wellreceived by family, friends, and others that it was reproduced and soldin local stores, as well as in Virginia.

Through music with both vocation and avocation, her greatest love washer family. Bringing her particular joy was the cherished time she spentteaching a grandchild to play the piano.

She leaves her partner of 31 years, Martin Padley of Wellesley, MA andher children, Kathryn Doran, Arthur Doran, and Lee Thornton, all ofNatick, Massachusetts, and Cynthia Swope of McLean, Virginia.Predeceased by a grand son, she is also survived by eight grand chil-dren.

Susie Carver Brickell-Since the reunion I,like most of you, spent the holidays enjoyingfamily and of course spending lots of timecrawling about the floor with my two adoredgrand babies. I am now waiting for the thirdto arrive this spring. I never imagined whatjoy grandchildren would be. My other ongo-ing endeavor is attempting to master the tech-niques of watercolor, brush and paper in acombination of something that possiblyresembles what my eye sees. This summer myhusband and I will race our Lightning (sail-boat) on the Chesapeake and up and down theeast coast. We have been sailing togethersince our first year of marriage when he intro-duced me to ‘frostbiting’ (sailing in winter ina small round bottom tippy boat). I have toadmit that I enjoy sailing almost as much asthe horses. At the end of November, I met Karin Reeves

Peek’s for lunch because she was visiting herdaughter who lives nearby. It was fun toreconnect and catch up on what had happenedsince graduation. Karen Richardson Alpha

I went backto school and became a Dental Hygienist.Upon his graduation in 1961 we moved toGreencastle, Indiana where we built an officeand began a wonderful dental practice togeth-er. In 1993 we retired, and as most retires arewell aware, we are busier than ever. Our girlsboth went to Drake University in Des Moines,Iowa. Debbie went on to become a PhysicalTherapist. She is a professor in the physicaltherapy school at University of Kentucky inLexington. She and her husband have 2 girls;one graduates this year from AsburyUniversity and the other from high school.Lynette married a career military man andthey did the usual moving around as sheraised two girls. 6wonderful bio that I am pleased to share. When I read it I feel as if she were sitting nextto me having a conversation, I hope you feelthat too. I am planning to meet up withDebbie Berwager Trone before my thirdgrandson is born in mid-April. Peg Calder

and I worked together to find classmates forthe reunion so we had been in frequent con-tact, after the reunion we both took a bigbreath, but we still keep in contact. I had awonderful conversation with Carolyn

Trenbath Marx before the reunion andMaggie Selden Holmes had a fun chat withher recently. We both thought it would begood to pass on that Carolyn would love tohear from classmates. She is unable to get outmuch and doesn’t use email but would enjoy aphone call (843-705-6163).

Debbie Berwager Trone

I am doing some fun traveling this year.California for two weeks, first San Franciscoand then visiting Dave’s family in San Diego. In March, I will travel with a friend to CostaRica for 10 days then in April a week in NewOrleans to celebrate a friend’s birthday. I planto visit with Susie Carver Brickell this springand Helen Ann Smith (P’60) at the beach inDelaware this summer.

Peg Calder

After leaving the spectacular Penn Hallreunion last September, I made my way toPhiladelphia to meet with Dr. O’Brien at theAddiction Research Center at the Universityof Pennsylvania. What a wonderful staff andwhat great work they are doing. The resultwas that the foundation that I run (Foundationfor Alcoholism Research, www.alcoholismre-search.org) gave them a grant in December fortheir research into the drug naltrexone, whichreduces craving in some people. They haveidentified a genetic variant which will allowphysicians to predict whether someone canbenefit from naltrexone, rather than just tryand see what happens. Such a fitting conclu-sion to a wonderful trip.

Bitsy Kuykendall Schwabe

All is well with me and in March I look for-ward to seeing Susan Bisacca McNinch andJulie Bowman McGregor for a visit inNaples, Florida.

Judi Olson Chiriatti

All is well and happy. I am sorry to havemissed the reunion but I enjoy the commemo-rative key chain. Diane Finlay Harrison andI have been exchanging emails on a regularbasis and it is so good to reconnect. I will betraveling east in April to visit my youngerson, Chris and family at his home inConnecticut and then on to visit my husband’sfamily in upstate New York. I was inPhiladelphia last summer, but didn’t get achance to visit Chambersburg as we were onour way to the Jersey Shore.

I am doing well and have been working formy brother who owns a building contractingbusiness. We are doing well with bidding andgetting jobs.

financial crash and while Nick was still inhigh school. So I began taking more teachingjobs and haven’t yet stopped, probablywon’t. We try to travel somewhere a coupletimes a year, also have a family cottage inCanada to take care of which lately has turnedinto more work than vacation, but the boysare very attached to it, so we keep it up.

We moved out here into the country about 20years ago now, designed and built the housewe live in, so I imagine we will stayhere. Besides, we like the winter and try toski most every week, snow permitting. Andsummer in the Finger Lakes is usually verylovely. Plenty of opportunity for all the out-door activities we love: hiking, biking, sailing, kayaking.

Maggie Holmes Selden (aka Peggy Selden)

I want to tell everyone how special the classof P61 was and is. The reunion wasfantastic! Everyone was so fun, unassuming, cordial, and welcoming to me even though I

was a part of the class only during 10th

grade. I am so pleased to have attended thereunion (thanks to Susie Carver Brickell’s

encouragement). And since the reunion Ihave become reacquainted with such wonder-ful gals such as Karen Richardson Alpha

and Carolyn Trenbath Marx (who wereunable to attend the reunion), and Sherry

Kimble Johnson (P’60) who put me into afreeze position when we came face to face atthe reunion. I’ve also discovered that Karen

Ekman Hillman (who attended Penn Hall

probably in 11th or 12th grades, after I left)lives 30 miles from me in the N. Georgiamountains, and better yet, she rides a motor-cycle as do I. I’m hoping that soon we canmeet and participate in a motorcycle ridetogether with a group in which she is a mem-ber. Since the reunion I have thoroughlyenjoyed meeting Sherry Kimble Johnson

(P’60) again for lunch in Dalton, GA, andyesterday I enjoyed over an hour of telephoneconversation with Carolyn Trenbath Marx

who was unable to participate in the reunionbut lives within a stone’s throw from my cur-rent home in Georgia.

It has been such an uplifting experience toconnect with these long-lost friends. Thankyou all for being so receptive. It has rein-forced my thinking that these early, youthfriendships and memories linger on forever inour minds even though we go on to establishour own families and friends throughout ourlifetimes. Thanks, Penn Hall, for the memo-ries!

P`62Sara Kroll Rubloff-I have some very fondmemories of the time at Penn Hall, it was avery important time in my life and many girlswelcomed me into the junior class. It wasafter dinner in the "solarium" that I learned todrink coffee. Later I begged my mother(never even daring to ask my father) forsmoking permission. Granted and I was inthe Butt Room doing my thing. I recall thatJan Terry (class ahead of us) and I were the

Elaine Rice Lau

Dick and I are in Crested Butte CO—he’s ski-ing; I’m spa-ing. We have a beautiful roomwith an equally good view. I just came upfrom the hot tub, have dinner reservationsbooked with friends, scheduled a spa treat-ment for tomorrow, and am feeling pretty mel-low. We also have a trip planned to Scotlandfor the end of April. Not sure what’s next, however in December Karen Richardson

Alpha and I plan to meet up with LynMcGriff Erickson in Florida at her sister’splace who was also a Penn Hall graduate.

Karen Richardson Alpha

What happened to me? Well, after Penn HallI went on to college at St. Lawrence in way-upstate NY near the Canadian border. I waslooking for a small liberal arts - CO-ED!! -school after PH and that nice academic deanwe had at PH (Miss Haller!) suggested it tome. I don’t think she realized what a reputa-tion it had as a party school. Ohwell! Neither did I, but I knew it was justabout as far away as I could get fromPittsburgh (home) and also that the drinkingage in NY was 18. I bet you’ll tell me,Maggie that you went to Syracuse for thesame reason! Anyway, one look and I lovedit. I had a wonderful time there for four yearsand hated to leave. You remember the movieAnimal House? Yep. Exactly.

I met my husband Jim at St. Lawrence; we gotengaged over Christmas our senior year andmarried the summer after graduation. Thenwe moved to Cincinnati for graduate school—for him. I worked in the new French gourmetfood shop in a big department store down-town, selling gorgeous French wines, cheeseset bonbons avec un accent français, grace à lesMlles. Richardson et Stolzenbach, slight sub-terfuge there, before moving on to theUniversity library, a better job, to supportus. After grad school we came to Corning towork for Corning Glass and have lived hereever since. Our son Chris was born that win-ter (1968 - I missed Woodstock and all theriots and protests of that year, having a new-born!) and 17 years later we had another son,Nick, who is now 26. In between I’ve been asocial worker, a librarian, an antiques dealer, and a fiction writer & poet. Also lately a cre-ative writing teacher, an ESL teacher, and forthe last 25 years also a tai chi master, mostlyfor my own health and fitness than for my stu-dents’. But don’t tell them. My short storieshave been appearing in the “little” magazines, mostly university quarterlies, since the late70s, poems in anthologies recently; I have acollection due out some time soon. (Publishertaking forever....)

Anyway, our son Chris lives nearby in Ithacaand has three adorable little children. Nick islivin’ de life in Manhattan with his two dogsand his girlfriend. But he comes home fre-quently on weekends to escape the city and Iget to visit and happily dog sit when theytravel.

Jim retired in 1999 just before the untimely

Anyway, nomore smoking but drinking coffee and wineare now my vices. After graduating from Penn Hall I went toSkidmore College for 4 years. It was in myfreshman year that I met Gary (a blind date,an anomaly before Internet dating) and mar-ried the week after graduation. We thenmoved to Chicago where Gary got his PhD inPhysics at the Univ of Chicago and I workedat the university. Then we took off forProvidence, Rhode Island where Gary did hispost doc work at Brown Univ for 2 years. Itwas there that our daughter Rebecca wasborn. Then we moved to Katonah NY whereGary worked for IBM Research for the next21 years. Our son Benjamin was born shortlyafter moving to NY. There were a few visitsat the time with Cynthia Seiman and her fami-ly when they lived in CT. During those 21 years I was busy with being aparent, doing civic things, including theLeague of Women Voters and a KatonahVillage Improvement Society, school thingsand earning my MSW at Columbia U. I alsoworked in some adolescent residential treat-ment centers there. As typical, our kids left home, Becky went toMount Holyoke College (Some of you mightremember that was the only college I wantedto go to and was rejected). Ben left forWesleyan Univ in CT and Gary got the brightidea that as empty nesters we should move.So we packed up and moved to Raleigh NCwhere he was at NC State and I had a greatjob, doing what I had done in NY at the statehospital. We weren't particularly happy withthe area and far from our children so wemoved to the Balt and DC area where he wasat the Univ of MD. Since then I have hadnumerous jobs working with adolescents andfinally gave that up for a private practice inclinical social work and have been at this forseveral years. Our kids are on their own and making usproud. Becky finished law school, lives inNYC and is the Dir of Training at theAdministration of Children's Services. Shemarried last May. Ben has been around andaround, getting a teaching degree at Harvardand an MFA in painting at Cornell ad nowlives in Berlin, Germany. He loves paintingand supports himself teaching art in highschool.Gary and I go round and round about when itwill be time to stop working and get on withfun. So far we both enjoy what we are doingand find time to travel and enjoy what isaround us. I have also become a registeredyoga teacher and teach chair yoga at an assist-ed living home, it's great to bring this to apopulation that is so limited. I meet up with Patty Schaidt Nadeau forlunch on occasion and we reminisce. For any-one living near or passing thru, please get intouch. [email protected]

A Brief History of Cheerleading

The history of cheerleading has roots inancient times, reaching back to the earlyOlympic Games and even the RomanColiseum.

Today, cheerleading is a big part of nearlyevery high school and college sporting eventaround the country, and athletic squads vie fortrophies and large prizes at cheerleading com-petitions each year. However, the history ofcheerleading shows that it started as a far cryfrom the shortskirts and athletic leaps we seetoday.

Cheerleading first started in the 1880’s in theUnited States. It was actually men-notwomen-who first led the crowds in cheers. The credit for the first cheer goes to PrincetonUniversity, where young men used mega-phones to rally the spectators with chants of“Rah Rah Rah” and “Sis Sis Sis.” Fromthere, the trend spread to the University ofMinnesota and then around the country. Fordecades, only male voices were heard incheerleading squads. In the 1920’s, womenstarted to become more involved with cheer-ing, but they did not take over until WorldWar II, when most young men were fighting. At that time, cheering was limited to leadingcheers for the crowd and doing a few simpledance steps with pom-poms. The girls woreankle-length skirts and varsity sweaters. Thecheerleaders were normally the most populargirls in school because they were voted intothe squad, rather than having to try out.

“Yell Leaders” in the 1930’s began to usemegaphones, drums and noisemakers toheighten the excitement. Pom-poms wereintroduced in the 1930s and made of paper. Then in the 1960s they changed them to vinylpom-poms. We don’tknow exactly were theorigins is, but wordpom is French mean-ing parade or display.

The first cheerleaderassociation was start-ed in 1948. A gentle-man by the name ofLawrence Herkimerliving in Dallas,Texas, started the

NCA organization which stands for NationalCheerleading Association. And then in 1949he started the first cheerleading camp whichwas held at Sam Houston State University.

What was cheerleading like in the 1950”s?Big skirts and big pom-poms. Cheerleadersreached new heights in the 1950s. Theybecame very popular because they thought itwas a very exciting thing to support theirmale athletes in all sports. The way theywere chosen was by the student body withtheir smiles or popularity. Fortunately, the1950’s didn’t last forever and people discov-ered it not only didn’t hurt girls to run andjump and sweat.

The first professional cheerleaders started inthe 1950s by the NFL team, the BaltimoreColts. Cheerleading not only supported foot-ball, they also supported basketball. But inthe 1960s, was when cheerleaders supportedall the other sports.

Cheerleading developed at a slow pacethroughout the next several decades. Somesignificant changes from the past were theintroduction of a few basic jump moves, theinvention of pom pom and the expansion ofcheerleading to support other sports. However, in 1972, the Title IX rule waspassed and opened up competitive sports forfemale athletes: as a result, cheerleadersengaged in more athletic moves.Cheerleading uniforms also changed to suitthis role. Baggy sweater and skirts werereplaced by more aerodynamic outfits thatallowed the girls to flip through the air. However, the cheerleading megaphones stuckaround.

My husband John and I met when Iwas working at Faxton, and he was a senior atColgate University. We spent 8 years living in Bainbridge ,NY where John taught in high school and washead football coach. While in Bainbridge, Iworked in my hometown hospital in NewBerlin, NY. My father was a GeneralPractitioner there and my mother was hisnurse assistant. My father delivered our sonBill in that hospital, while my mother admin-istered anesthesia and my husband supervised. It was quite the family affair, and our son wasnamed after my father; William Elliott Homa.

After Bainbridge, we finally settled inDelhi, NY, and bought our home there. Johnworked at SUNY Delhi in administration.

Ourfinal stop before heading back home was toAnkgor Wat, a Hindu temple or mausoleumand the largest religious building in the world. It is not only beautiful but impressive.

We arrived back home in early November2011 and left again for our usual time in St.Maarten during the holidays. Judy Ann Snyder Divelbiss - After PennHall, I went to Marietta College in Ohiowhere I met my husband, Joe. We were mar-ried before his senior year; I dropped out withthree semesters to go and got a job. That jobset much of the course for my life. I got a jobas a newspaper reporter for the local paperbecause of my English background and typingskills. I have spent many of the last 50 yearsas a reporter and editor of both a daily andweekly paper in and around Fredericktown,Ohio. I also had my own photography studiofor 19 years, worked in the welfare systemand retired in 2006 from our county healthdepartment where I worked in health promo-tions. Three months later my husband diedvery suddenly after a 40 year battle with dia-betes and heart disease. We have three chil-dren and six grandchildren. After Joe died, Itook a job as editor of our local weekly paperand retired again in 2010, but continue towrite stories about our community. Since thenI have been quilting. Started a quilting andknitting group at our senior citizen center, anda year ago began my own home-based busi-

ness creating fiber art from repurposed familykeepsakes. I also publish a quarterly newslet-ter for local senior citizens, am activelyinvolved with our community developmentgroup and our schools. My favorite alum story involves WilsonCollege. In 2001 I went to France with a localgroup. Our guides were Tom Turgeon, a pro-fessor at Kenyon College, and his wife,Peggy. Wonderful trip. While in Paris onenight, I sat next to Peggy at dinner and webegan talking colleges, etc. and we discoveredshe was at Wilson College the same time Iwas at Penn Hall. Our momentary celebrationdid not match the decorum of that very formaldining room. How fun! I have lost track of all classmates butSuzanne Wilkinson Meldrum, but havewonderful memories of Penn Hall. Carol Braught Fry……After graduatingfrom Penn Hall, I went to work for an EthanAllen Gallery, and then became assistant cura-tor in the Cumberland County HistoricalSociety. I spent a few years as a secretary, while my husband, Gary, (married since 1975)was in Law School. Next, it was off toPhiladelphia...with our 6 week old daughter, and a year later to South Jersey, where weremain. I “stayed at home” and had anotherdaughter. I’ve co-owned a catering business, then enjoyed a few years as a pre-kindergartenteacher. And now, I’m still a very busy gal...playing golf, reading, cooking and entertain-ing, working occasionally at an historicalhome as a guide, wearing many hats at ourchurch, etc. Gary and I have a vacation homein the Poconos where we spend as much timeas possible, and also vacation at Rehoboth,Delaware. Perhaps after Gary retires, we’llbegin a bit of traveling...however, we’re prettycontent as “home-bodies”. Our daughterGretchen, an attorney, and her husband, Brent, are in North Jersey, and Brent is an assistantprosecutor in Morris County. They have aGreat Dane (our granddog)...although we loveher, we anxiously await the arrival of a humangrandchild, in the not too distant future. Ourdaughter, Karen lives with her fiance inHoboken with our other “granddog”... theyboth work in Manhattan and we’re planning aSeptember wedding. Gary and I certainlyenjoy the empty nest thing, but we lovespending time with our adult children, and wecertainly are happy to have them live nearby.Anyway, that about sums up the last 40 sincePenn Hall. Simple life, but happy andhealthy. I have no plans for a birthday cele-bration.( in September). I’m just hoping I canlook good in a “hoochy mama” dress atKaren’s wedding!!!

Angie Cunningham Weiss... celebrated my60th birthday on January 6th with family andfriends receiving gifts and 64 cards, whichwas cool! For the past decade, I’ve beenretired, and my husband of 34 years, Daniel, plans to retire in about 4 years. He is veryhappy at Roche Diagnostics and will stay aslong as they want him. No plans on moving, our grandchildren are here so we’ll stay put. Ilove Indiana! We went to Hawaii last yearand plan to go back to Alaska next year. Wehave 3 children and two grandchildren.

Cindy McIntyre I married my high schoolsweetheart and had a son and a daughter. Iworked at Franklin & Marshall College, didsome temp work, and recently began my ownbusiness as a beauty consultant for Mary Kay.I only work when I want to and I’m having aball!! I just recently recovered from anklereconstruction surgery but all is well.

My second chance at love came when I metVictor Hugo (really!) and we married in 2008.Vic has 4 sons and four grandchildren. I have2 adorable one-year old grandsons. My sister,Lynn McIntyre PH’66, lives nearby and weare still very close.I often think back on those carefree days weshared, and the memories make me smile. Thebutt, the field hockey and swim teams, theInn, the delightful Miss Ramsey, Mrs. Ryder, and the best teacher of all, Mrs. Crist! I laughwhen I think of all of our antics: the mice inClaudia’s slippers, and the time NancyRodgers got stranded on the roof of a frathouse at Gettysburg U. What good times wehad! They were the good old days and wedidn’t even know it!

Michele Brooks Treptow…my life has pro-gressed without a game plan and for the mostpart I have enjoyed the ride. It was very hardleaving my friends at Penn Hall. A new schooland major (Mary Washington College andpsychology) proved not successful. I movedback home and took up interior design at theUniversity of Maryland. Upon graduation in1975, I started working for theAmerican Farm Bureau Federation inWashington and loved it. The office was locat-ed on Pennsylvania Ave. which afforded greatviews of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan’sinaugural parades. Close proximity to the bestshopping took care of my paycheck. (I livedrent free at home.) My younger twin sistersand I decided to move to San Francisco. Atthe time our older sister and her young familylived in the Bay Area. The Brooks girls had ablast hanging out at happy hours and nightclubs. Eventually, I ended up back inWashington returning to Farm Bureauwhere my career began. I was an independentreporter (radio and TV) covering agriculturenews on Capitol Hill, the White House, andvarious government agencies. I traveled a lotacross the U.S. and it was on one of those

trips to Atlanta that I met my husband RickTreptow. He’s a reporter for Georgia FarmBureau in Macon where we have lived sinceour wedding April 23, 1988. (First and onlymarriage for both of us!) For the past 21years, I have been a Georgia state employee atthe Georgia National Fairgrounds &Agricenter in Perry. It’s a year-round rentalfacility and home of the Georgia NationalFair. (The Fair is a big deal in the world offairs!) I’m the director of communicationsresponsible for advertising, promotions, mediarelations, and various special projects. I basi-cally work to pay bills, buy clothes, and travelwith Rick. In December, we sailed on our firstcruise to Key West/Freeport/Nassau andthen flew to Oahu in January. Everyoneshould go to Hawaii in January at least oncein your life! In April, we’ll meet my sisters inScottsdale for the second, non-annual sistersreunion tour. November will find us in LosAngeles for my nephew’s wedding. I need tosqueeze in a trip to Dallas to visit my parentswho reside at Monticello West. My 93 yearold father just recently passed away in hissleep, my 91-year old mother has maculardegeneration and dementia and lives in “Nellyworld.” Rick and I work hard and findimmense enjoyment being a part of our catNikki’s life!

Ginger Blum Pfeiffer…...was given a won-derful surprise 60th birthday party by her chil-dren and husband at the Brick House inWycoff, New Jersey. The Ray Long Champband performed, a terrific dinner was served, and her New York Yankee fan birthday cakewas presented with the band playing “TakeMe Out To The Ball Game”.Tracy Ramsey Koerner…..I can’t believeour 40th is just around the corner, where doesthe time go? Let’s see, my daughter Kristenwas married to Sean, 2 years ago inNovember and my son, Justin married Jamiethis past June. Now I am expecting 2 grand-children, a grandson whose name will beJustin James (they’ll be called the 3 J’sl) onMay 29th and Kristen announced at Christmasthey are expecting June 24th...I have a 6 yearold grand daughter, Emma, who isn’t quitesure of all this...she says, “Gra, where are wegoing to put all the babies?” Needless to say,I’ve been busy planning baby showers,Winnie the Pooh and Precious Moments, buy-ing baby clothes and just enjoying watchingKristen & Jamie experience pregnancy. Whenit’s quiet, which doesn’t happen often, I sitand think how lucky I am to have all this newlove in my life. Among other things, I’vebeen adopted by Bailey, a Gointer, golden &pointer mix; see his photos on Facebook! I’vehad several operations this past year, and stillneed to have my thyroid removed, and then Ithink that’s it, not much left to fix or take.Guess certain things need fixing andrecharged once 60 rolls around. My familygave me an awesome 60th birthday party, close friends and family....what a milestone toreach....Well ladies, here’s to 40 years of pastmemories to look back on and make ussmile...Nancy Rogers Lawrence—sends her best toeveryone.Louise Hancher Wagner…… It certainly hasbeen fun reconnecting with my Penn Hallfriends. Nancy & I have stayed in touch on &off over the years. But we have been email-ing and talking frequently the last year. Thereunion was great. There were several class-es, including ours with a good turnout. Iwould encourage anyone that couldn’t make itto be sure to attend the next reunion in 2014.Last September was busy with the Penn Hallreunion coming two weeks after our daughterLeah’s wedding. Claudia Yoder Caldwell My life in a nutshell over the past forty years. I’ve been mar-ried for 38 years, have three daughters age 36,32, and 30. I have two granddaughters, 3 and1, and another on the way. I still reside veryclose to where I grew up, within a few miles.I was a stay at home Mom for 23 years andthen went on to be sales coordinator bookingspecial events for thirteen years.

Unfortunately, due to the economy, I was laidoff a few years ago. I am now back workingpart time booking events for our country club.Unfortunately, I could not make last year’sreunion because we had already planned avacation to Jackson Hole. Looks like every-one had a great time; I’d love to go to one. It’s always fun to see what the other “girls”are up to. I was in Florida for a few days andthen got busy and forgot-sorry. . *See Picture

Candyce Robin Malachuk Lewis-Since thereunion my parents are living with my hus-band and I, in our guest house. We call ittheir honeymoon cottage, as they had a pic-ture of their wedding day in front of the onethey honeymooned in. My husband and myFather have a wonderful relationship; also myMother and my husband Ross also are so kindto each other. My husband is the Florida out-doors men, is a contractor and builds for thehigh profile sports figures, golfers that youjust had seen in the PGA tour. Some no longermarried but are still building home for theirwives. We were at Gary Carter funeral lastFriday evening. The former New York Metbaseball catcher, he also made the Hall ofFame we know him and his wife as they hadbeen in our Sunday school class we taught. As Gary looked down from heaven he wouldhave been so filled with the love, as his threechildren each one speaking about the mantheir father was. Yes, the tissues were passedand Daryl Strawberry wiped his face, othersports figures spoke. My husband was theprayer chaplain for the braves a few years agoso many of the players do have a heart like

Tim Tebow. Thank God I married one ofthem. I have broken both of my wrists and have twocasts. I am still doing tours but my costumehas been designed with long lace selves tocover the casts. Betsy and Carol sent sweetcards. I have so much to be thankful for ourdaughter calls hoping to pursue the medicalfield, giving me medical advice on vitaminsand medicine. 17Harp Instructors at Penn Hall

In 1924 the music department at Penn Halladded a new branch –That of the harp, MissElises Sorelle of TheSalzedo Harp ensemblewas the instructress. Itwas the first year Penn Hall had been ableto offer such an opportu-nity for those who wishto study the Harp. Sheinstructed from 1924 –1931.

Miss Mildred Dilling, America’s foremostwoman harpist became the instructor at PennHall from 1932-1934. From 1937- 1945 shewas a guest harpist fora yearly concert usuallyin April. She died in1983 at her Manhattanhome at age 88.

Miss Dilling 1895-1983 performed for fivepresidents, taughtHarpo Marx, DeannaDurbin, Sir LaurenceOlivier, and Bob Hope. She also owned the world’s largest privatecollection of harps.

Miss Dilling performed throughout North andSouth America, the Orient and Europe. At thepeak of her career, she gave 85 concerts andtraveled 30,000 miles a year. In her early 80’sMiss Dilling was still performing 10 concertsa year. She also conducted harp workshops atcolleges and universities, giving master class-es at the University of California, LosAngeles.

A founder of the American Harp Society, MissDilling kept about 65 harps in her apartmentand had others stored around the world.Sometimes she would bring 25 along on aconcert tour.

W. Lyon and Patrick J. Healy. Lyon & Healyhas it headquarters in Chicago, IL which, inaddition to being the location of the produc-tion of its harps, also contains a showroomand concert hall. They built their first harp in1889. In 1890, Lyon & Healy introduced theStyle 23 Harp, still one of the most popularand recognizable designs in the world

Lyon & Healy harps are widely-played byprofessional musicians since they are one ofthe few harps for orchestral use, which arealso known as “concert harps” or “pedalharps”. In addition, Lyon & Healy makesmaller versions of the harp, which are knownas folk harps (based on traditional Irish instru-ments) or lever harps (which use levers tochange the pitch of the string rather than ped-als) In the 1980s, Lyon & Healy also beganto manufacture electroacoustic harps as wellas solid body electric harps in later years.

By the 1900’s Lyon & Healy was one of thelargest music publishers in the world, and sell-ing new and antique violins, pianos, and otherinstruments. By the 1970’s, L&H decided toconcentrate solely on the creation and sale ofharps.

In 1928, Lyon & Healy introduced one of themost unusual harps ever designed for massproduction, the Salzedo Model, designed incollaboration with the harpist Carlos Salzedo.

In the 1960s Lyon & Healy introduced asmaller lever harp, the Troubadour, a 36-stringharp that is designed for young beginners, who have smaller hands.

By 1985, Lyon & Healy was also making folkharps, also know as “Irish harps”, which areeven smaller than the Troubadour.

In the late 1970s, Lyon & Healy was pur-chased by CBS, and consequently closed allof the retail stores in the Chicago area thathad been selling sheet music, musical instru-ments and their education departments-focus-ing on the harps division.

Lyon and Healy primarily manufacture fourtypes of harps. The level harp, petite pedalharp, semi-grand pedal harp, and concertgrand harp. They also have “special Harps”which are concert grands and have a limitednumber.

Lyon retired in 1889. Healy died in 1905.

A little history of the Harp

The harp is a very old instrument that hasappeared in many forms throughout the world.King David played the harp and stated in theBible. It was the first string instrument maninvented. As music has changed and devel-oped through history, so has the harp. Theearliest forms of harps have existed for almostas long as the bow and arrow (the harp isbelieved to originated from the hunter’s bow).It has been found in tombs which date back to3500 BC, its modern form emerged aroundthe 9th century AD.

Types of Harps

Pedal harp: The pedal harp is referred to inmany different ways-the classical harp, theconcert harp, the concert grand, orchestralharp, double-action pedal harp-and can varyin size slightly, but they’re all referring to thesame thing. It moves the job of changing thepitches of the strings to get sharps and flatsfrom the left hand to both feet.

Lever harp: Lever harps are also know asfolk harps, Celtic harps, and Irish harps, aswell as simply non-pedal harps, but they’renot necessarily all the same thing. The term iscatch-all phrase for wire, gut and nylon stungnon-pedal (lever/folk) harps that grew out ofthe Celtic tradition. Because many people use“Celtic” synonymously with Irish, it is alsosometimes used more specifically to refer toonly wire-strung harps (Irish harps). They cancome in various sizes from lap harp (which issmall enough to set on your lap-think of theharp that’s pictured on a bottle of Guinnessbeer) to floor harps (up to around 5 feet tallstanding on the floor). They can be strungwith different types of strings, including nylonstrings, gut strings, and bronze wires Leverswere added that can change the pitch of astring. Folk harp most often used as a generalterm to refer to gut or nylon strung leverharps.

Memories of Penn Hall Riding Program

Penn Hall was a foreign school in a foreign land as far as I was con-cerned. In the fall of 1957 my parents drove me up to the land ofChambersburg (from Roanoke, VA.) and deposited me at the steps ofthe wonderful, beaconing junior college that had been my dream toattend since the very moment I found out about it. The riding programand Mrs. Helen Baker Kelly were the big draw for this 18 year olddreamer. I had always envisioned being a rider or a professional orbeing some sort of member of the horse world. It was the start of mydream, young and immature that I was I knew then that this was theplace that I would get my start.

Oh, what a two years that was, riding, horse showing, and, oh yes, study-ing and having the time of my life. Mrs. Kelly taught me right fromwrong with horses, what was important and how to conduct myself.Sportsmanship, manners and above all, the horse came first. It was adream. The only regrets that I had after those two wonderful years werethat it was just two years. I cried for two months when I left thinkingthat that little nest, that little comfort zone that Penn Hall held for mewas all that there was. Little did I know that there was a great big worldawaiting for this person to work and try to succeed.

Time passes. Attendance at Roanoke College, a tenure at a tack store inCharlottesville, VA. Followed by an invitation to be an assistant ridinginstructor at Hollins College in Roanoke, my home town. Taking that jobwas the beginning of another era in my life becoming an apprenticeunder Hollins College’s Guy (Red) Burkholder who was another mentorand guidance counselor in my growing into a horsewoman. Years passand upon his retirement I became the director of the riding program atHollins University.

It all began at Penn Hall. Helen Kelly, the patient faculty, the friendshipsmade along the way all contributed to any successes I may have hadthese 53 years since graduation. I remember that (now gone) brick barn, tack room, aisle with finished stalls, the back pasture that served as anoutside jumping course, the golf course that no horse had better get near(!) and the trail rides over the stream and up onto a farm on the otherside of the tracks. And, oh, yes, there was the train. That train that wouldcome through at various times, blow it’s loud horn right as it got to thestable and scare all of us to death, a noise that all of the horses wereused to! Isn’t it odd how many of those thoughts remain in the back ofyour head!

Thank you Penn Hall.Thank you all of thepeople, horses andwonderful studentsthat were my friendsat that time. Whereare all of you?Roommate MaryWalter, MarinaMainini, Nancy Kress,Sally Liversidge, thenames go on and on.What good memories.Let’s keep in touch. It’s only been 53years! Good memories all.NP.
