Vineyard Town Golden Age Home

The Vineyard Town Golden Age Home is a nursing home for the elderly located in Vineyard Town, Kingston Jamaica. It is a government run agency that is home to a wide range of elder people from the stable mentally and physically to the mentally and physically unstable.

It was a heart wrenching experience for the individuals who took part when they heard the stories of a few of the wards. Some individuals broke down in tears and had to leave the housing facilities.

Unfortunately due to the nature and rules governing the operations of the facility we were not allowed to make any recordings while we had discussions, combed hair, washed hair, played domino, lend a listening ear, fed and assisted the wards for the day. In light of this these pictures depict the lyme that took place outside the different segments of the facility.

A great mind once said that once said that an individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity. This quote epitomizes our motto; Live to serve love to serve. By virtue of your affiliation with the Kiwanis movement, you have dedicated your hearts, your minds and time for a cause higher than self. That cause is to serve humanity.

The need to serve humanity is greater now than ever before. Right now as I speak to you, there is a little girl somewhere out there that is on the verge of dying of starvation. As I speak to you now, there is boy somewhere out there that has been traumatized by community violence that he has been experiencing daily. As I speak to you now, there are millions of children around the world that crying out for someone to care for them and show them love. The world is crying out for compassionate and visionary leaders and as circle k’ers you all have the potential to shape the future of our world for the betterment of mankind for years to come.

My charge to the membership of the UWI Mona Circle K club is to be the change that you want to see in the world. The world needs leaders with great vision, passion, and people who are willing to change it. This is where each and every one of you as members of the UWI Mona Circle K club comes in. You are the dream makers, the leaders, and the team to accomplish what needs to be done.

To our new members, it is not how long members are a part of an organization that will determine its success. Success will only come when the members live it, sleep it, feel it, have it , talk it and do it! The ‘it’ that I spoke so passionately about is your desire to serve. You all will become the next generation of leaders that will further our organization and preserve its proud legacy. I want you to be all that you and be and remember it is not how much you do, but how much LOVE you put into the doing that matters.

To all returning members, I want to thank you for all you have been doing in the name of CKI. Your unwavering commitment to serve is one of my biggest inspirations. However, I want to remind you that success is not a destination, but a journey. I want you to continue doing what you have been doing over the last couple of years that have made your circle k club a giant throughout CKI. Ensure that you continue to lead by example and inspire our new member so that they will be motivated next year to offer themselves not just at the club level but at the district and international levels. You have a great President and I expect nothing but the best from the club.

As your District Administrator, I will try my best to get to know each and every one of you on an individual level. I am looking forward to a great year working with you all and as a team I am confident that we will be able to realize the goals of the district. Let us now show CKI why we are the MIGHTY CARIBBEAN CIRCLE K DISTRICT! Let’s go change the world team UWI Mona Circle K Club!

Paint Jamaica

The Paint Jamaica project started in July 2014 with the idea of bringing art into the streets of Kingston, specifically in spaces forgotten or abandoned. Their main aim was to establish a relationship between art, talent and society, with the purpose of transforming the visual landscape of the environment.

However, in the next few months, the project did more than just transform the physical outlook of different communities; it transformed the lives of countless individuals who reside in these areas. The venture has been so successful that organisers have decided to embark on a new spin-off project, slated to get underway in October.

Dubbed Plant Jamaica, the new initiative is an offspring of the Paint Jamaica project, and aims to take the beautification of Kingston’s inner cities to a whole new level.

Greetings!!

The UWI Mona Circle K Club is dear to my heart. As a member of this club, I will continue to look to you for the greatest support as governor this year. As the Circle K Club that has groomed me to be what I am today, it is my deepest pleasure to address you as Distinguished President of this distinguished club, and as Governor of the Caribbean District. The UWI Mona CKI Club is known for excellence, and it is this tradition of undying success, that you all are expected to uphold. As you come in to this organization for varying reasons, I hope you will stay for only one reason, to serve your school, community, country and self.

The Caribbean District has entered another year of service, one in which you are needed now, more than ever. Circle K International is the world’s largest student led collegiate service organization. We have a role to play in our Caribbean region. It is our duty to help to produce socially responsible students, giving back to the less fortunate and providing a happy life to our children. The Caribbean District is happy to have you on board as part of the team. The UWI Mona Circle K Club has an especially big part to play. As the region’s premier institution for higher education, I expect your be the premier club in the region for service, on all three campuses. I therefore charge you, UWI Mona CKI, to be the leader for the other two UWI Campus Clubs and work closely with them as brother and sister clubs across the three divisions of our District, to render unselfish service, and to give back to the community in a way that no other college or university can. I challenge you UWI Mona to rise above the comfort zone of just your campus and neighboring communities, but instead, let your presence and hands of service be felt throughout the Caribbean region. Be the leader in this mighty Caribbean District and serve!!!

I encourage you to never lose sight of our tenets, which

GovernorNicolette Wilson

Page 19: Pelican News Volume 14 Issue 02

are service, leadership and fellowship. Service is a big part of our goal this year as the District encourages clubs to give selflessly. Clubs are expected to improve on the service hours from the previous year, and to work hard at ensuring that members are active within the clubs. The Eliminate Project, our major service initiative, has under 2 years to reach its goal of USD 110M. Clubs have a major role to play in ensuring that Maternal Neonatal Tetanus is eliminated by the end of 2015. Fundraisers must therefore be structured in such a way that clubs make and contribute as much as they can. I implore the members of this club, the UWI Mona CKI Club to rise to the challenge and give to the Eliminate Project like no other club has.

The District has a lot planned for you this year, so I encourage you to stay involved. Read emails, utilize the FB Group and communicate with your Lieutenant governor, a member of this same club. This is a very special year for us as we will be here as CKI members to celebrate Kiwanis 100 year anniversary come October 1st. You therefore have a big role to play in ensuring that whatever Circle K does, it is done to the best of our abilities and the highest quality. Show your K in every way. Use this time to bond with your Circle K friends and fellowship with your sponsoring Kiwanis club of North St. Andrew. I look to you all for a successful year, a year that has not been seen before!!! In everything you, Live to Serve!!! Love to Serve!!! Represent the spirit and beauty of our West Indian Caribbean people!! The Caribbean District! United by our Culture, bonded by our people!

I expect full support from this club, as the home club of the Governor and the home club of the Lieutenant Governor for Paradise Division, make us proud, as we make you prouder.

With loveNicolette Antoinette WilsonDistinguished President (2012-2013)Governor (2013-2014, 2014-2015)

Hola Circle K’ers! Hope like myself you are all enjoying the season. Having fun and committing service where ever and when ever you can. Though I’ve only been a circle K’er for a year, which is ironic since after these 12 months I must say that I have fully developed into a loyal circle k’er. It is my hope that for the rest of the circle k year. That we continue to press on effortlessly as circle k’ers to carry out projects, raise funds, integrate with our fellow circle k’ers and Kiwanis family members on a whole and aim to matriculate further onto higher ranks. I want to encourage each and every one of you to not let being at home stop you from committing an act of service, Go Online, there are a lot of organizations there waiting for your help and your time. I hope to meet and greet everyone of you who reads this message sometime throughout my tenure as I love meeting new people in the Kiwanis family. Continue to enjoy your holiday and achieve.

I must say that I have fully developed into a loyal Circle K’er“ ”

InternationalCoastal Cleanup

Each year in September, hundreds of thousands of volunteers comb lakes, rivers, and beaches around the world for litter. These volunteers are the driving force behind International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day. Last year, 648,015 volunteers in 92 countries picked up more than 12.3 million pounds of trash from the coastlines and waterways around the world. Just over 6,000 of those volunteers were Jamaicans and just over 600 of those 6,000 were Kiwanians who removed over 65,000 pounds of trash from our beaches. These dedicated volunteers collect data about sources and types of trash harming our oceans and waterways. The data is used to raise awareness, inspire recycling efforts and shape policy decisions from the local to international level.

JET is National Coordinator of ICC in Jamaica, and we also host the flagship ICC beach cleanup event at Fort Rocky on the Palisadoes strip. Over 2,300 volunteers, including students from 49 corporate area schools, thirty corporate teams, turned out last year, making JET’s beach cleanup the largest one on the island. A total of three miles of the Fort Rocky Beach on the Palisadoes Strip in Kingston was cleaned. Over 12,300 pounds of trash was collected, which included over 13,000 plastic bottles – the largest category of debris at that site.

Greetings!!

As President of such an exceptional student-led service organization, I am truly honoured to bring greetings on behalf of the U.W.I. Mona Circle K club. The U.W.I. Mona Circle K has achieved remarkable distinctions throughout its 27 years of existence and this Circle K year will be no different. We’re now at the start of another calendar year and during this time the club will be focusing on membership recruitment, board elections and transition.

U.W.I. Mona Circle K is a collegiate service organization that gives back to the school and community. One such example was our recent Single Service Project at Mona Heights Primary School, where we volunteered for the day to restore garden areas and clean and paint the library and resource room. Circle K is a remarkable club that allows you to contribute to the society in your own unique way as well as to meet and interact with people of different cultural backgrounds and enhance your leadership skills.

I hope everyone had an excellent holiday seas and is gearing up for the re-opening of school in a few weeks. The club will be engaged in quite a number of activities this year and we look forward to your participation in making our activities a success.

Enjoy the rest of your holidays and I look forward to seeing you at our events.

President Shawn.

DLFC-14District Leadership Fall Conference 2014

District Leadership Fall Conference is a weekend retreat where all the clubs within the Caribbean District come together to fulfil on all three tenets of Circle K International: Service, Leadership and fellowship.

This year we retreated to the Lia Center in the cool hills of Manchester Jamaica. We formed groups under the theme “feel the jungle fever” in which we bonded as teams of strangers and competed against each other in different activities as well as conducted chores together in an effort to build teamwork skills.

We also had workshops to assist with our leadership skills as individuals as well as leaders in our different capacities.

To close the weekend off the team strolled down the road into the community to conduct a service project to make an elderly man’s house more habitable.

Greetings Circle K’ers!! To all new and returning members, I would like to welcome you all to the UWI Mona Circle K Club. I am Jermaine Flemmings; 1st Vice President for the year 2014 – 2015. On behalf of the entire executive body, I would like to thank you all for volunteering your valuable time, energy and most of all your collective spirit, to our organization.

I am personally looking forward to working with, and getting to know each and every one of you during the year, and I hope that it will be an enriching experience for everyone involved. Aside from giving back, Kiwanis is all about building lifelong friendships and establishing connections; most of all it’s about coming together as one collective family. This is what our three tenets of Service, Leadership and fellowship, speak to, and it is what we here at the UWI Mona Circle K strive for.

Circle K international serves as the largest collegiate, student led, service organization in the world. This is because of like minded individuals such as yourselves, who recognize the importance of carrying on the work that needs to be done. It is with this in mind that we enter our 27th year of service to home school and community, and look forward to making this our best year to date. With help from each and every single one of you, we can do anything we set out to accomplish.

Greetings fellow Circle K’ers I hope this message finds you and your family members in good health and spirit. January marks the 10th month since I was sincerely honoured by being elected Secretary of the CKI club of the University of the West Indies Mona. I have been a member of the Kiwanis family for many years and I am still on a learning curve as to how Circle K functions, this is an indication to show that no matter what post you hold, there is still more you need to educate yourself on. Circle K International is an excellent service organization and you all should feel extremely proud to be a part of it and it would have not been so successful without the selfless dedication of the volunteers and officers through the world. The UWI Circle K also has a history of greatness which we will continue to build on in this and future administrative years.

All I want from you the members are your time and dedication to the organization, go back to that first day you entered the club and told everyone why you chose Circle K. Let that ‘why’ become a reality and let our motto and three tenets be your guide. See you all soon but in the mean time ‘gwan’ ...... ‘Live to serve looooôvvvveeee to service!!’

Tiffany Higgins, University of the West Indies Circle K treasurer. Circle k is a club I hold dear to my heart; it has shaped me into the well rounded individual I am today.

Circle k International is the largest university service l e a d e r s h i p organization in the world. Circle K International (CKI) performs on average half a million hours of service each year which involves more than 13,700 members spanning 19 nations. CKI is making a positive impact on the world everyday. Circle K International promotes the three important tenets which i n c l u d e ; S E R V I C E , L E A D E R S H I P

and FELLOWSHIP. The University of the West Indies, Mona is indeed apart of this incredible organization. CKI focuses on giving back to our community, fostering an environment to build leaders and make enduring friendships.

Since service is an important part of

Circle K International the University of the West Indies, Mona Circle K club has taken part in many very worthy causes thus far. These include our most recent Single Service Project at Mona Primary School; where we planted fruits and vegetables with the help of the United Nations and rehabilitated the library and resource room. We are also in the process of building a mobile first website that automatically adapts to different screen sizes to ensure that visitors get the best browsing experience. We have partnered with DigitalOcean to make this aspect of the project a reality. We will also build for the school a custom School Management System (SMS).

This is just the beginning of our commitment to the Mona Primary school as we seek to expand our Brining Up Grades Programme (BUG’s) in the coming year and continue to evaluate how we may contribute on an even wider basis to this school. For this year many other projects are in store. Come out and Feel why those who get involved in Circle K never go back! Not only do we perform service we also have a time for relaxation ‘fellowship’ and always building world class leaders along the way.

LIVE TO SERVE LOVE TO SERVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SSP-14Single Service Project 2014

Single Service Project is the largest donation or activity service oriented for the Circle K Year. This year SSP was conducted at Mona Heights Primary School; where we rehabilitated the library and resource room, restored garden areas - planting sweet pepper and more.

As an additional aspect to the donation we will also donate a brand new modern mobile first website and School Management System that will enable the school to accept online applications and electronically generate reports for the more than 1,000 students at the school and make them available online to parents and students.

We also aim to expand the wifi network at the school and build a more robust and connected school environment through the use of the tablets provided by the Government of Jamaica to each student and teacher and internet services supplied by both Flow and LIME Jamaica Ltd.
