Denali had one of those magical moments with this painting—he stepped back from the composition and knew it was complete—leaving it more sketch-like in style, reminiscent of ancient Chinese mountain paintings. Blue background strokes possess the energy of wind on the peaks and the mountains vibrate with earth and snow despite white virgin canvas showing through.

As with all of Denali’s Summit Paintings, this piece depicts a scene of three goggled figures posing for a picture at the summit of a mountain. We believe this image is of Denali with two friends, one of which is Zach, who tragically perished far too young perusing outdoor adventure. Due to the unpredictable nature of Denali’s free form painting practice, the colors are softer, the brush strokes less aggressive and the figures caressed by gentle lines.

A series of four paintings originally presented as walls of a structure completed with a four-sided platform base. Viewers could enter from each corner onto the elevated room to be surrounded by images of abstracted goggled faces, each at the top of their own mountain. The effect was to give rise to the viewer as they are confronted by these masked figures. As the primary piece for Denali’s junior review, they are exemplary of the work he wanted to pursue combining his passion for painting and adventuring.

Denali’s vision with the Summit series was to evoke the high energy and excitement felt reaching the top of a peak. He felt that photographs taken at the summit fell short of the surge of emotion at the extreme feat, but with quick brushstrokes and bold colors he could express the sensation. The effect is an energetic abstraction of the original image in which the figures are broken down into basic shapes and the move-ments of the strokes dominate.

While the concept of the summit paintings was received somewhat critically during his review, they were adored by the outdoors community, compelling a commission by one of his father Marty’s clients of their summit of Denali in Alaska. Each painting is based off an image from Denali’s own adventures—often featuring Denali himself, Marty, and the many friends he made through the trials of his climbs. They are an attempt to fuse the diametric worlds of art and the outdoors.

Many of these paintings did not take Denali more than one session due to his fast paced rhythmic style. He usually laid down fast drying acrylic paint for the background and basic shapes, then the rich texture and vivid color of oil on top for detail and pop. To watch him paint was to watch a highly trained dancer, his whole body moved with each stroke across the span of his paintings. His process was entirely intuitive, allowing each mark and hue to lead him to the next as the image evolved.

Buried is a hyper realistic self-portrait of Denali in full ski gear—puffy jacket, gloves and ski goggles—to the point that his body is fully obscured. The original piece was present-ed lying face up on the floor covered in ice that slowly melted over the course of an evening revealing the image underneath—a haunting piece that eerily predicts Denali’s own fate.

4 8 x 2 9K2 is the last painting that Denali ever completed. Using a found paint-ing acquired at the San Francisco Dump, He depicted the mountain disguised by a pattern of neon brush strokes, smiley faces and dots above a blue and white haze. The heavy use of turpentine gives the appearance of drips and smears, altogether conveying the mix of excitement and apprehension at his impending trip.
