Chatsworthwww.chatsworth.orgRegarded as one of Britain’s favourite stately homes, Chatsworth is the home of the 12th Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The approach to this splendidhoney-coloured palace is memorable, proceeding slowly up the drivewaythrough the deer park as the mansion gradually increases in size and splendour.Inside, beautiful staircases lead to the State Rooms which display fine paintedceilings and furniture. Don’t miss the Music Room, where a fiddle hangs behindthe door (you can’t pick it up and have a go – it is a clever trompe l’oeuil or trickfeature by Dutch painter Jan Van der Vaart), or the gleaming white marblesculptures, brought to Chatsworth by the 6th Duke, son of Georgiana ('The Duchess'). You'll also find superb examples of modern art and sculpturethroughout the house. Beautifully kept gardens and grounds include a maze, arboretum, rose garden and fountains. Visit the farmyard and adventureplayground as well as the elegant restaurants and shops including the award-winning farm shop. Haddon Hallwww.haddonhall.co.ukFrom its 12th-century walls covered in roses and clematis to the magnificent14th-century Banqueting Hall and musician’s gallery, Haddon Hall is soaked inold-world atmosphere. The family of the Dukes of Rutland has owned the house since shortly after Queen Elizabeth I came to the throne. The stunningElizabethan Long Gallery, 110 feet long, is flooded with light through bigwindows, with a wonderful plasterwork ceiling under which the family andguests could promenade and converse on rainy days. Don’t miss the Tudor-erakitchens complete with authentic furnishings – salting basins, chopping blocksand the ovens used to bake the Hall’s daily bread, or the beautiful frescoes inthe chapel.
