Dear Chatsworth Families, Our closing ceremony for our fifth grade students is being held in our schools cafe /gymnasium on Friday, June 9, 2017 beginning promptly at 9:25a.m. Each student receives four tickets of admission to the ceremony so that family and friends may attend. The closing ceremony for our kindergarten students takes place in our schoolscafe /gymnasium on Monday, June 12, 2017 beginning at 9:25a.m. To alleviate long check in lines on the days of our closing ceremonies, our school follows a procedure for advance visitor check-in. Parents, please be sure that all of your guests for our farewell ceremonies are pre-registered in the of- fice so that we may have visitor badges ready before the ceremonies begin. This involves all guests stopping by the office to have their drivers license scanned into the RAPTOR visitor system. We are looking forward to celebrating with our students and their families. Your adherence to the policies set forth for the ceremonies will help us to maintain a safe environment for our school and an efficient and memorable program for our students! ***Note: More specific in- formation about both ceremonies will be communicated by the Fifth Grade and Kindergarten Teams. Stay tuned!*** The week of May 8-12 is Teacher Appreciation Week. We are extremely fortu- nate to have so many outstanding staff members at Chatsworth School working with our boys and girls. Many times we take for granted the work of our dedi- cated teachers. Frequently, they work many hours beyond the normal school day and spend their own money to provide extras to the students that the school system does not provide. Please talk with your child about all that our teachers do. Our boys and girls are fortunate they attend Chatsworth School where all of our faculty and staff go above and beyond what is expected. A sim- ple thank youfrom a student will let a teacher know that they are appreciat- ed. It does not cost anything but means a lot. If you have a few minutes, a sim- ple note of thanks to your childs teachers would really be appreciated. Best Regards, Andrea L. Telling Your Own Story Wordless picture books are told entirely through their illustrations. Each “reader” creates their own story through interpretation of the pictures. Children enjoy telling and writing their story to accompany pictures. Here are some steps for sharing a wordless picture book.

There are no “right” or “wrong’ ways to tell the story. Children can create their own story or stories to match the pictures.

First, take a picture talk through the book. Talk about the characters expressions, actions, setting, and the artistic techniques of the author. These conversations will enhance the storytelling.

Now, go through the book a second time and let your child develop a story. Listen to be sure a sequential story is being developed.

Finally, have your child retell their story.

*Create your own wordless picture books from photos of experiences you have had to-gether. Sharing wordless picture books is a great way to build important literacy skills in-cluding, vocabulary development, comprehension, and an increased awareness of how sto-ries are built.

Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study

Fifth Grade Needs Your Help!

A research team from University of Maryland will be participating in an national study called Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD study at Baltimore). The research team will be distributing pamphlets to elementary schools during the month of May. Pamphlets will be sent home to students in Grades 3 and 4 and will contain information about the study and contact information if you would like to participate. As BCPS has no role in the study, please contact the research team by the information provided in the pamphlet.

Our fifth grade students are working on a community service project and are still in need of some items! If you are able to contribute, please see the last page of this newsletter for the items that are still needed. Thank you!
