Principal’s Message Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday. The students have done a wonderful job kick-ing off the homecoming events last week. The students seemed to have a great time at the Homecoming Dance. This week we will have festivities each day leading up to the Thanksgiving football game at Upper Darby. We have started many service activities throughout the month of November. Diaper Drive, Food Drive, and Holiday gift collection to name a few. All are completed with a spirit of helping others. The students, parents, teachers, and staff have instilled in the students the importance of giving back or passing it forward. Thank you for showing your students the importance of helping others. Haverford High School continues to offer numerous clubs and ath-letic teams. Please encourage your student to get involved. It is good to be active either as participant or spectator. One offering is to come out and see our play, Once Upon A Mattress. The play will take place December 2
nd, 3
rd, and 4
th. The play is an example of
our nationally recognized music and arts program. We are always thankful for the support of the parents and guardians throughout the school year. If there is anything we can do to assist your student please do not hesitate to call or email. We look forward to closing out 2016 in an excellent manner. We hope to see you dur-ing the month of December at one of the many HHS events. Sincerely, Pete Donaghy Principal Haverford High School

Haverford High School Shark Tank
On Thursday, November 3, Haverford FBLA hosted it’s first ever LIVE Shark Tank event during 2nd block. Several students submitted business ideas prior to the event, and 6 business ideas were chosen to be show-cased! These students prepared presentations on their business ideas and shared them with a panel of “Sharks” for their chance to win a $250 cash prize! Our Shark panel consisted of 3 well-known business owner’s in the Havertown area—Steven Cassel from Iacobucci, Lisa Smith from I’ll Be Dipped, and Matt Giangiulio from Hoopty’s Pizza. The following student presented their business ideas to the sharks, who then asked questions to the students about executing their ideas and of-fered them great business advice!
Christina Douvartzidis and Olivia Osbourne—Strings Incorported Samantha Loney FAQ ( Female Asking Questions) Santiago Duque-Baird Everyday Fitness Ben Savitz and Liam Noga—Spray Time is Over Isabella DelSignore—ExpressLane Julia and Pryce Davies—Like Minded Tutoring
Page 7
In the end, Isabella DelSignore won over the judges with her creative idea to start a fundraising website for aspiring artists to sell their own creations! The proceeds from each sale would be split between the artist and the school art program as a way raising funds for future programs—a win-win for all involved! Congratulations to all students for their hard work and preparation! It is im-pressive to see young adults creating new and innovative business ideas here at Haverford!
Pictured above are the judges for the Sharktank. Thank you for coming and making Sharktank a wonderful success: Judges: Steve Cassel - Iacobucci Lisa Smith - I'll be Dipped Matt Giangiulio - Hoopty's Pizza Rich Sedmak is the founder of Schoolyard Ventures.

Dia de los muertos
(Day of the Dead)
For the 9th year running Haverford High School students got the chance to
celebrate Día de los Muertos the first week of November.
Sra.MacConnell’s Spanish students give tours to visitors, passed out dead
bread, and answered questions about this unique Mexican holiday.
At the High School, students make an ofrenda, an offering or memorial to
the deceased, which is displayed for all visitors to see. These ofrendas
are often very moving and artistic, including traditional and personal me-
mentoes such as flowers, pictures, lace, colorful fabric, skulls, along with a
few of the deceased’s favorite things. Additionally, guests are invited to
taste authentic Pan de Muerto, or Dead Bread, which the students have
prepared. Papel picado, ornately cut tissue paper, is hung to decorate and
provides a festive feel.
Page 8
Page 9
On November first and second, Mexicans decorate and have parties cele-
brating their deceased loved ones. To honor deceased family members,
Mexicans cook their favorite meal and go to their grave site to clean and
decorate their grave. Because of Mexicans strong belief that death is not
the end of one's journey, they are able to laugh at death and celebrate
loved ones who have passed away without constant sadness and grief.

World Language News
The World Language students have been busy this past month. On October 19, the Spanish Club students listened to a presenta-tion in Spanish on the Day of the Dead by two new students at Haverford – Maria and Rafaela Garza, from Cuernavaca, Mexico.
On November 3, Mrs. MacConnell’s classes presented their Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) ofrendas outside of the auditori-um, with samples of Pan de Muerto.
Page 10
Ms. Reed’s Spanish V AP classes wrote their own Leyendas (legends) after completing a chapter on ancient civilizations and their use of stories to explain things such as why there are volca-noes or why the sun rises and sets. They wrote them in Spanish with an illustration per page. Then on November 10
th, the students
walked to the middle school and read them to Mrs. Gordon’s 8th
grade Spanish classes. Blocks 1 and 3 each chose the two they felt were best, and those students will have their work submitted for the spring issue of Albricias, the literary magazine of the Sociedad Hispanica Honoraria.
Seyna Guynes and Nicole Barycki read to 8th graders.

American Education Week
On Thursday, November 10th, twenty five students from the
4 language clubs helped to fill 250 “Thank You” bags containing a treat representing each culture and including a note saying “thank you” in each language. The bags were distributed to HHS faculty and staff at the end of the day on Friday November 11 as a sweet way to start American Education Week – Nov. 14-18.

maintaining a high academic standard for themselves, can-
didates to the NHS are expected to demonstrate a commit-
ment to school activities as well as a service to the com-
munity. We would like to congratulate the new members of

8th graders visits the High School
Friday, November 11, the 8th Graders from the Middle School walked over to the High School to visit . After a warm welcome from Mr. Donaghy, the students were broken up in-to groups and were escorted by Seniors, Student senate, Senior Class of-ficers. This is the 1st time the 8th grade has had visitation to the High School before graduating from the Middle school. Usually the students visit with their schedules in August. The change was made so that they would get a true picture of how the school is during class time. 8th grade Parents met on Thursday, November 17 in the Auditorium for their first view of the school. It seemed to be a positive outlook for student and parents alike.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH OF OCTOBER
Please congratulate the following students who have been
recognized by their teachers as students of the month for
October, 2016.
Zane Bradley Class of 2017 nominated by Mr. Frantz
Zane is the model of great students. He always wants to lean new ideas and concepts, and volunteers answers in every class. Zane also asks in-teresting questions and always has his work done on time. In addition, Zane writes well, and, I know he will be an asset to any post secondary institution he attends.
Annabelle Lint Class of 2017 nominated by Mr. Brennan
Annabelle Lint is a violinist in the Haverford HS String Ensemble, an ad-vanced ensemble whereby membership is by audition only. Annabelle was chosen to participate in the Haverford High School string chamber ensem-bles, a program offered to only the very best students. Annabelle has been repeatedly honored as a member of Pennsylvania Music Educators Asso-ciation (PMEA) District 12 Orchestra. As a member of the orchestra pro-gram at Haverford, Annabelle has consistently been an outstanding per-former and participant in a variety of musical rehearsals, performances, and activities. Annabelle has consistently demonstrated a very high de-gree of musicianship, responsibility, courtesy, discipline, respect, leader-ship, reliability, enthusiasm, and maturity. She always has an engaging and positive attitude along with a tremendous eagerness to learn and work diligently. STUDENT OF THE MONTH OF OCTOBER
Joseph Hefferan Class of 2018 nominated by Ms. Sangine
Joey has really shown tremendous growth this month. He is respectful, a hard worker, a leader in the classroom.
Joseph Hefferan Class of 2018 nominated by Ms. Hartman
Joey has come so far in English. I had him last year and I have him this year, and he has stepped up his game, going above and beyond to learn and prepare himself to be successful on the Keystone. He's punctual, dili-gent, and takes responsibility for himself. A model student!
Joseph Hefferan Class of 2018 nominated by
Ms. Roncaglione
Joey is always respectful, is up to date on all his work, improved so much since last year. All around good kid
Cecelia Katcavage Class of 2018 nominated by Mr. Bilotti
Cecilia spent about 20 minutes in class selflessly helping an ELL student Jamal Aden, with one of the more difficult topics we have covered to this point in Chemistry. She worked with him very well and with infinite pa-tience. When they were done Jamal had a much clearer understanding and thanked her for the help. She took the initiative herself as I was help-ing a myriad of other students around the class. In addition, she is always asking the right questions and maintaining focus in a class where students try to distract at any opportunity. She consistently comes in for test cor-rections even though she received an A or B on the test. She is a great example of what a Haverford student should strive to be at any grade or educational level, for this reason I nominate her for student of the month!
Page 21
STUDENT OF THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER
David Abrahams Class of 2018 nominated by Mr. Decina
David is an unbelievable asset to class. His ability to compare and con-trast the three agents of change and their role in ending Apartheid was ex-ceptional. David continues to advocate for his own education in the most mature and adult manner.
Gracie Hough Class of 2019 nominated by Laura Clinton
Grace is a great positive peer role model for students in our biology class and is always willing to help her classmates. Her patience and positive at-titude is a daily example for everyone.
Gracie Hough Class of 2019 nominated by Ms. Cessarini
Grace has proven to be an excellent student willing to work above and be-yond class expectations. She has shown teachers she is a leader, that she is motivated to do well despite challenges, and that she is respectful and kind to all of her peers. Grace is also an active member of the Haverford Cheerleading Team and is maintaining all A's and B's!
Emily Romeis Class of 2019 nominated by Mr. Frantz
Emily is one of the most enthusiastic students I teach at the current mo-ment. She loves the idea of learning, and volunteers each and every day in class. In addition, she always finishes her work on time and is extreme-ly energetic. I highly recommend Emily Romeis for Student of the Month. She surely deserves this award.
Page 22

His peers could learn from his work ethic and attitude about school and learning!

Alyssa Hayes Class of 2020 nominated by Ms. Obenski
Despite sustaining a serious concussion at the beginning of the school year, Alyssa manages to excel in her coursework and make up her miss-ing assignments. Haverford Chamber Singers guest of
Wayne Art Center Honors Orchestra Concert
Earlier this month, our Haverford Chamber Singers, students of
Marsha Core, were guest artists on the Wayne Arts Center Honors Or-
chestra concert. The honors orchestra, now in its fourth season, con-
sists of student string musicians from local schools, including ours.
Mrs. Joyce Prichard, an experienced local string professional and
teacher, asked the Chamber Singers to sing with the orchestra and
conducted the program of classical and contemporary music, includ-
ing the Theme from Downton Abbey.
Accompanied by the orchestra, the Chamber Men sang The Call
by Vaughan-Williams while the Chamber women sang the flirtacious
Bel piacere from Agrippina by Handel. The joined forces finished the
program with the famous Ave verum corpus by Mozart and the rous-
ing 'Hallelujah, Amen' from Judas Maccabeus by Handel.

A Message from Haverford’s HEART TEAM
(Students Assistance Program )
DID YOU KNOW???
On November 15th Carl Antisell spoke to the student body about his journey from untreated anxiety and depression to addiction and subsequent recovery. Carl came from a community similar to ours and he suffered from an untreated anxiety disorder from a young age. He explained the progression of his addiction from early experimentation, to self-medication with alcohol and pre-scription opiates in high school, to his eventual heroin addiction in college. His addiction led him to drop out of college and become homeless before he recognized that he could no longer live that way and needed treatment. Today Carl is in recovery and travels around the country speaking to students about his experiences for Minding Your Mind, an organization dedicated to removing the stigma of asking for help for mental health issues for students. You can watch Carl’s presentation on the high school website under “What’s happening at HHS”.
