Cultural Club News

Chinese Cultural Club is a very happy club. Members attend meetings every Friday. After all business is completed, they have singers, Mrs. Wong Yu Kun, Mr. Li Neng and Mrs. Shirley Lau sing opera songs or Chinese love songs. Although Chinese Full Moon was on September 27, 2015 this year, we are going to celebrate Full Moon and birthday members from July, August, September and October at Fook Yuen Restaurant. One Full Moon legend tells us Chang Er swallowed the magic pill of immortality. She floated up into heaven. Her hus-band Hou Yi tossed her jade rabbit up to her. Thus, she sits with her rabbit in the moon. People say that when the moon is full you can see them there. Events: 10/2 - Meeting 10/9 - Meeting 10/16 – Meeting 10/23 – Meeting 10/30-Meeting

September is like a fresh start of the year since school starts full time and we're faced with traffic again Despite that, our members look forward to attending our Monday activities. On Sept. 14, we heard from representatives of Island Hospice who educated us on the quality of care that they offer. On the 21, we enjoyed sing-along with Moana's ukulele group and impromptu hula/line dance by our members. Brought back memories of "the good old days". On the 28th, we enjoyed the magical show of Mr. Takeshi. We all left still wondering how the bowling ball fell from a sketch he drew. Hmmmm. Looking forward to an exciting October where will hear educational information from Mr . Curt Kiriu, Pres. of CK Inde-pendent Living Builders. Also, information from Ms. Mari Nakamura from the Neurotrauma Registry - Traumatic Brain Injury. The following week, Kumu Harmony will show case her hula dancers from Lanakila. In addition, October birth-days will be celebrated, especially for our 90th birthday celebrants who are: Teresa Chang, Kikuo Kageno, Mae Kuboyama and Masato Matsui. Happy Birthday! Please join us on Oct. 26 for Karaoke/Japanese dance by Sensei Nobuko Yamagu-chi and her dancers. Happy Halloween on Saturday, Oct. 31. There will be no Filipino Cultural Club meeting on Saturday, October 10th. Please attend our meeting on Saturday, Oc-tober 24th. We will be celebrating birthdays for the month of October! Check back soon for pictures of our club’s anni-versary celebration. Salamat! Events: 10/10 – No Meeting 10/24 – Birthday Celebration

Haitai Gusuyo! Kugwachi(September) was a short but wirikisan(enjoyable) month. First, Elsie’s Karaoke entertained us with songs and even made our members use their brains as they asked questions and gave out prizes for our correct an-swers. You even got a prize for being the oldest. What a treat! Continuing with the theme of “using our jianda(brains)”, Kaiser Permanente presented BRAIN GYM FOR SENIORS lead by Cindy Ogata. She did many exercises that seniors can do to improve not only memory and clear thinking but also balance. Remember the “buttons” exercise?

Also big KAMSA HAM NIDA! To Toni Lee of the Korean Cultural Club for inviting Lanakila members to Helemano Plantation Moon Festival Senior Fair. The Korean Club performed as did Sensei Toguchi-Nakasone’s Okinawan Dance Group.

The last Thursday ended with Nankurai Naisha not only entertaining our birthday celebrants but all of us with their per-formance. A group with jinbun(talent). Dikiton(well done)!

Juugwachi(October) is upon us with a full month of exciting meetings.

Our President Frances Dela Cruz is still on the Big Island caring for her ill son. She tells me that she may be back some-time in October. It will be so nice to see her again. We are all saddened about Sharon Tulba’s husband, Lawrence Tulba, who passed away. When he came to our meeting he always sat in the same chair, always. We will miss him. John Burrows also has a request! I, John Burrows want and need one hundred new members to join the Hawaiian Club. We need more people with lots of aloha. Open to everyone, bring a smile we need you.
