Safety Tips for Teensdriving as a teen is one of the most exciting experiences in your life. But it also requires that you become more aware of not only your own actions, but the entire road around you. every action you take can have a serious and damaging effect on the lives of many.

• ALWAYS Wear Your Seat Belt

• one of the only things that may be able to save your life during an accident is your seat belt. so, it wouldn’t make much sense to not wear it at all times while driving, now, would it? it is important to always remember this as you begin to drive because, regardless of how responsible you are in driving, you are never able to prevent all accidents. At the very least, it would ensure that you survive any accident that may happen to you.

• Obey the Speed Limit

• it is never wise to go above the speed limit while driving. By doing thisyouaregoingtogiveyourreflexeslesstimetoreactinthecase that you lose control, or something else happens, such as a pedestrian or car suddenly getting in front of you. The best way to prevent this is to simply not speed and follow the speed limit as best as possible.

• Don’t Drink and Drive

• not only are you not allowed to drink alcohol if you are under 21 years old, but drinking and driving can cause some of the worst accidents that have resulted in the death of one or more people. is it worth the risk? Absolutely not, this is why it is also advisable to never get in any vehicle with an intoxicated driver regardless of their age.

• Don’t Use Your Phone While Driving

• nowadays most teens such as yourself are most likely attached at the hip with your smartphone. This device, however, is one of the biggest distractions for drivers, as even a two second glance at your phone could potentially result in a major accident. every minute on the road should be spent looking directly at the road, eliminating any distractions, including your phones. so, be sure to turn off your phone until you arrive to your destination to ensure the best safety for you, your passengers, and all other drivers on the road alongside you.

Getting Your First Pennsylvania Licensecongratulations! if you have gone through the steps of getting your driver’s Permit in Pennsylvania, then you are now only one step closer to of obtaining your driver license. And we’re sure you are more than ready to finish the process. Well no need to worry because the process is almost over! now it’s only a matter of mastering the art of driving to get your license. All that is required now is that you follow the steps below that best fit your situation to officially hold that brand new license.

Driving TestThe driving test is the last step to finally obtaining your driver’s license, but in order to that you must bring the following documents in order to take the driving test. You must be sure to check that all the documents are valid before you bring them, otherwise you are not allowed to take the test.

DocumentsThe following documents must be brought valid to take the driving test:

• Your learner’s permit

• Your registration card for the vehicle you will be using to take the road test.

• Provide one proof of insurance for the vehicle.

• Provide one proof of a valid driver’s license of the person who will be accompanying you to the driver license center, who is either:

• 21 years old

• Your parent, guardian, or spouse who is at least 18 years old.

The examiner will first check for the following things on the vehicle you will be using to take the road Test before you are able to begin taking the examination:

• valid registration card

• current insurance

13drivers-licenses.org

• valid state inspection sticker

• valid emission sticker

• lights, horn, brakes, tires, mirrors, doors, seats, seatbelts, turn signals, windshield wipers. This is to ensure they all operate properly in order for you to take the test. if the examiner does not deem the vehicle safe you cannot take the test. At this point, the driving part of the test will officially begin, and the examiner will only act as an observer. The examiner will be marking your scores on the score sheet while you drive, and will also give you instructions ahead of time on what they would like for you to do.

After the examiner ensures that the vehicle is safe enough to conduct the driving test, you are asked to do the following before you begin the road Test:

• Operate Vehicle Controls: You must show the examiner you are able to use the controls of the vehicle. if you are unable to accurately operate any of the controls, you will automatically fail the test. Therefore, be sure you are able to operate the following controls before going to take your road Test:

• Windshield wipers, emergency parking, horn, brake, defroster

• lights (parking, high and low headlights, hazard lights, and turn signals)

• Parallel Parking: You must be able to park your vehicle in between uprights, in a space that is 24 feet long and eight feet wide. You will only have one chance to successfully park with only three adjustments, therefore you must be able to do the following:

• Park your car entirely inside the space

• not make any contact with the uprights in the rear or front

• not cross the painted line

• not go over or onto the curb

When it is time for you to officially begin the driving option of the road Test, you will be accompanied by only the examiner in the vehicle. The examiner will tell you what maneuvers they would like to see you do and where you need to drive to, while paying close attention to the manner in which you approach and obey any stop signs, warning signs, and traffic lights. They will also judge how well you control the vehicle, and use the controls and turn signals to communicate with fellow drivers or whenever else it may be necessary.

14drivers-licenses.org

Passing the Road Test

once you finish and pass your driving test, you are given a temporary driver’s license that will be valid for 15 days, until your permanent driver’s license is mailed to you. When you receive your permanent license, you will be required to destroy your temporary license.

You will need to present a form of identification at the Photo license center, such as a Pennsylvania learner’s permit, valid passport, etc. to receive your license.

Failing the Road Test

in the case that you fail the driving test, it may be due to one of these reasons:

• You violated any traffic laws

• You drove recklessly or dangerously

• You made errors in safe driving practices

• You caused a crash

• You did not follow your examiner’s instructions

• You did use turn signals

• You were not able to operate any of the vehicle’s controls

At this point you must retake your driving test, however, if you do continue to fail the driving exam after three attempts, or before your learner’s permit expires, you will need to obtain and fill out the dl 901 form here.

Though, if you do not successfully pass your driving test within three years of the date you took your physical examination, you will be required to begin from scratch by re-applying for another learner’s permit and retaking the knowledge test.

sUsPended license

in order to reinstate your suspended license, you may have to deal with a long process depending on what offenses you have committed. Thankfully though, we are here to help you and make the process as simple and easy as possible.

Thefirstthingyoumustknowisthateachrequirementtoreinstateyourdriverlicensedepends greatly on each situation. instead, the Pennsylvania dMv will send to you a restoration requirement letter that explains to you which steps you will need to take to reinstate your license.

DocumentsTherefore, there is no single requirement for you to follow. so if you wouldliketofindouthowtoobtaintherestorationrequirementletterto reinstate your license, please do one of the following things:

• go to the Pennsylvania dMv website here and insert the following information:

• Your license number

• Your date of Birth

• Your social security number

OR

• call the Pennsylvania dMv at 1-800-932-4600

if you do not request a restoration letter, you will automatically receive one by mail within 30 days before your suspension period ends.

oBTAining A resTricTed license

one ray of light in your situation though is the fact that Pennsylvania may allow you to obtain a restricted license for you to use during the time your driver license is suspended. This is not absolutely guaranteed though, and depends on your suspension case individually.

in order to know whether or not your suspension case allows for you to obtain a restricted license, you will have to make a request from the Pennsylvania dMv for either an occupational or probationary license. in which case the dMv will review and either:

• send you a denial notice in the mail.

OR

• send you an approval in the mail instructing you to visit a local dMv office.

To better understand and learn more about the two types of licenses, please continue reading the below sections.

Occupational Limited Licenseone type of license you may be able to obtain while your driver license is suspended is an occupational limited license (oll), which allows you to transport yourself to certain places legally. even if you petition for an oll it does not guarantee that it will be approved, so read below to better clarify how an oll works and your chances of being approved.

ObtaininganOLLwillgiveyoutheabilitytodrivetoandfromspecificallyauthorizedlocations such as:

• Work

• school

• religious services

• court-Mandated community service

• rehab Program and/or counseling

• grocery shopping

• To care for a dependent

• child visitations

• Medical visits/emergency care

29drivers-licenses.org

However, whether or not you get approved for your oll depends on certain factors. For example, you will NOT be approved for an oll if your driver license is suspended due to any of the following reasons:

• Passed a school bus

• raced or drove recklessly

• drove without headlights

• committed a hit and run

• committed a dUi offense. But have not served the minimum suspension.

other factors that could affect whether or not you are approved for an oll, include the following as well:

• Your personal driving record.

• Whether you have a legitimate reason to need an oll or not.

• Whether your area of residence has alternative transportation options or not.

if you would like to petition for an oll please follow the steps below carefully:

• Fill out an Occupational Limited License (OLL) Petition (DL 15 form) here.

• Pay all the court fees and fines.

• Pay all the form fees.

• send in the application and fee by certified mail to the following address:

PA department of Transportation

Bureau of driver licensing

oll/Pl Unit

P.o. Box 68689

Harrisburg, PA 17106-8689

30drivers-licenses.org

Probationary Licensenow, when it comes to a probationary license the issue is a bit different compared to an oll license, in which your license has recently been suspended. You can only request a probationary license make if you have had your driver license suspended for five years or more. A probationary license would permit you to drive between the hours of 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. of the day.

in order to request for a probationary license, you would have to follow these steps:

• Fill out the Probationary License (PL) Petition (DL 20 form) here.

• Pay all the fees stated in the form.

• send in the application and fees by certified mail to the following address:

Suspended and Restricted License FeesThe different processes of reinstating your license and obtaining either an oll or probationary license all require that you pay different types of fees, some small and others a bit costly. it is therefore best to carefully outline how much all of these fees may end up amounting to, as they can very quickly build up into a bigger issue than expected. To fully understand this, please read below as we better guide you through each fee that you may have to pay during this process.

Vehicle Safety TipsBefore getting behind the wheel, it’s important that the vehicle is prepared for any trip. This means checking the safety features and making any needed changes to your vehicle to guarantee a safe drive.

eMergencY KiT

one of the essentials to safe driving is having a basic emergency kit available in your vehicle at all times. This kit should include items such as water, extra batteries, rope, First Aid kit, matches and a whistle. during the winter months, it is also important to carry items such as blankets, non-perishable foods, extra gloves and socks, and a shovel.

WinTer driving

one of the most dangerous times to drive is during the winter, especially if you live in an area that snows or is prone to ice. consider these tips below to drive safely during the winter.

• Don’t Rush! roads are often covered in snow and ice after it snows. instead

of driving fast and risking an accident as you hurry to get to your destination, try leaving a few minutes earlier than usual. This will allow you to drive slower and avoid other dangerous drivers without being late for your appointment.

• Don’t Panic If You Skid or Slip in the event that your vehicle does skid or slip while driving, make

sure you do not panic and slam down on your brakes. instead, apply slow and even pressure on your brakes until you stop. This will prevent you from spinning further out of control.

• Check Your Vehicle Before you leave your house make sure your vehicle’s controls,

brakes, tank, tires, antifreeze, and exhaust are all in working order. it is also important that you remove any ice and snow from your car before you begin driving; this prevents the snow from blocking your view while you drive, or worse, flying off and hitting someone while in motion!

DRinKinG anD DRiVinG

every year thousands are killed as a result of drinking and driving. These events can be prevented; it only requires that you plan ahead of time by taking certain steps.

Before you begin drinking, arrange for someone else to be the designated driver. if they also become intoxicated, it is important that you take a taxi. never allow someone drunk to drive, instead take away their keys and call for alternative transportation.

if you see someone who you suspect is drunk and showing signs of intoxication while driving – such as making wide turns, weaving, swerving, breaking erratically or turning abruptly – call 9-1-1 and contact authorities immediately. Also make sure to avoid them on the road to ensure your own safety. This could mean you pulling over until they are at a safe distance from your car.

USinG YOUR PhOnE

driving while using your cell phone is one of the most dangerous things you can do. during those few seconds that your attention is diverted to your phone, a major accident could occur. Make sure you don’t text, use the internet on your phone, or receive calls while you drive to prevent accidents as best as possible.

ThinGS TO aVOiD

driving isn’t always a relaxing experience. There are certain actions that can be both an annoyance and dangerous to you while driving on the road. These things are often avoidable if you make sure to take the necessary steps towards preventing them, as well as stopping them after you discover them to be occurring.

Car accidentsone way to avoid car accidents is to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive and will not cause you any problems. To do this, regularly check that your brakes are functioning properly, your tires are inflated and not worn out, and that the steering and suspensions are checked by a mechanic.

wasting Gasif you drive often, start looking for ways to save on those expensive trips to the pump. saving on gas is something that is possible if you take a few steps towards ensuring you save some money in the long run.

some of the ways that you can start saving gas are turning off the air conditioning, not leaving your engine running or speeding above 60 mph. These things are preventable

41drivers-licenses.org

and not necessary for you to drive, therefore you can quickly reduce the amount of gas you waste.

Another way to save on gas is to make sure that your vehicle is functioning properly. You can do this by checking that your tires are properly inflated, your engine is well-tuned, and that your octane level is the correct amount to your vehicle’s needs.

aggressive DrivingAggressive driving and drivers are both things that should be avoided to prevent on-road aggression or accidents. Aggressive driving is categorized as exhibiting behaviors such as aggressive tailgating, verbal or physical harassment towards another driver, or preventing another driver from merging or passing.

if you are an aggressive driver, you are putting others at risk every time you do any of the above behaviors. When you encounter a frustrating situation on the road, instead of becoming aggressive, take a moment, breathe, and continue moving.
