Kilkenny will be rolling back the centuries to celebrate its unique and rich history when it hosts Ireland's first Medieval Week from March 28th - April 6th 2014. Families and grown-ups alike are invited to step back in time and join in epic events including tales of knights and witches, sword making workshops, medieval craft making, historic tours and delicious medieval banquets. Medieval Week events will take place within the city walls of Kilkenny and throughout medieval parts of the county, starting from Friday March 28th 2014. THE ‘BOOK OF POTTLERATH’ EXHIBITION OF FRAMED EXERTS Kilkenny Castle is currently exhibiting framed exerts from The Book of Pottlerath at the Sallyport Cellar. The Book of Pottlerath is a rare and fascinating book, which forms a major part of Kilkenny’s past. Today it lies in a vault at Oxford University in England. This ‘Leabhar na Rátha’ begun by James, the 4th Earl of Ormond, was completed by scribes commissioned by his nephew Edmund Butler in 1454 in Co. Kilkenny. It came into the hands of Sir George Carew, President of Munster, who subsequently bequeathed it to Sir Thomas Stafford. Stafford either sold or gave it to William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury, who in turn gave it to the Bodleian Library, Oxford University on 16th June 1636. The condition of the bequest was that it would not leave Oxford University and it is still in their care to the present day. The exhibition is open free of charge to the public from 9.30am to 4.15pm daily. The ‘Blow a Glass Bubble’ workshop will be facilitated by Glassblower Rory Leadbetter and is suitable for both adults and children.(Aged 8+) Rory will guide participants through the ancient art of glassblowing; taking a gather from the furnace, controlling the blowing iron and blowing a glass bubble. Each session will take between 10 and 15 minutes and is free of charge.

the internationally important collection of Renaissance burial monuments at St. Mary’s church, Kilkenny. Presentation by Cóilín Ó Drisceoil (project director, Kilkenny Archaeology) at 10am in City Hall followed by tour of the monuments in the churchyard. Meet the team of master stonemasons, conservation engineers and archaeologists to discover the fascinating history of these magnificent monuments, and how they are being conserved and restored. MacDonagh Junction Shopping Centre is getting in on the Medieval Festival with a

FREE Viking dress up and photo opportunity. A Viking boat and a “real” Viking warrior will be the focal point of the activity in the centre on Saturday and Sunday afternoon 2-5pm on both weekends of the festival. and also to mark the 6th anniversary of the opening of the reconstructed 17th century

garden at Rothe House, we are holding a day full of activities for the family:

10.30 - 12.30: ‘Swords and Shields’ - a creative morning for children from the age of 5 to 12, where they will make and paint their own swords and shields which they can take them home with them at the end of the workshop.
