    PROFIBUS

Distributed automation solutions on thebasis of open fieldbuses are currentlythe standard in many sectors of the pro-duction and process engineering indus-tries. Only fieldbuses permit full use ofthe functional advantages of digitalcommunication such as improved reso-lution of measured values, diagnosticsfacilities and remote parameterization.

PROFIBUS is currently the most success-ful open fieldbus with a large installedbasis for a wide range of applications. The IEC 61158 / EN 50170 standardguarantees future compatibility of yourinvestments.

PROFIBUS is suitable for fast com-munication with distributed I/Os(PROFIBUS DP) in production automa-tion, and for communications tasks inprocess automation (PROFIBUS PA). It isthe first fieldbus system which coversthe requirements of both sectors usingidentical communications services.

The transmission method ofPROFIBUS PA is tailored to the require-ments of the process industry. The stan-dardized communications servicesguarantee interoperability between

field devices from different vendors andremote modification of field deviceparameters during operation.

With SIMATIC PDM (Process DeviceManager), an integrated and cross-ven-dor tool for configuring, parameteriza-tion, commissioning and diagnostics ofintelligent process devices on thePROFIBUS, it is possible to configure alarge number of process devices fromdifferent vendors using oneuniformgraphical user interface.

    Theory of operation

PROFIBUS PA is the expansion ofPROFIBUS DP with process-orientedcomponents for direct connection ofactuators and sensors. The RS 485transmission system used forPROFIBUS DP has been replaced forPROFIBUS PA by the transmissionsystem according to IEC 61158. Thissystem is internationally standardizedand can also be used for intrinsically-safe applications.

PROFIBUS PA uses the same communi-cations protocol as PROFIBUS DP; thecommunications services and telegramsare identical.

With PROFIBUS PA, information and thepower supply to the field devices can betransmitted on one two-wire cable.

PROFIBUS PA can be used in standardenvironments just as in potentiallyexplosive atmospheres. When using in

potentially explosive atmospheres, thePROFIBUS PA and all connected devicesmust be designed with the type of pro-tection Ex [i].

The uniform protocol of PROFIBUS DPand PROFIBUS PA permits the connec-tion of the networks and thus the com-bination of processing performance andintrinsically-safe transmission.

    PROFIBUS International

The conformity and interoperability testscarried out by laboratories authorized byPROFIBUS International (PNO) togetherwith the PNO device certification guaran-tee that the quality and functionality arealso provided in multi-vendor installa-tions.

You can find further information onPROFIBUS in the PNO product catalog. The PNO supports the further technicaldevelopment, standardization and world-wide marketing of PROFIBUS.

The catalog provides a summary of a widerange of products and services associatedwith PROFIBUS. It represents the offersfrom suppliers worldwide, and is avail-able online on the Internet at:

PROFIBUS PAin the SIMATIC PCS 7 environment

SIMATIC PCS 7 is the process control sys-tem in the Siemens automation net-work "Totally Integrated Automation"(TIA). It uses standard hardware andsoftware components from theTIA family such as controllers, PCs, com-munications functions and distributedI/Os. The uniform data management, communication and configurationcapabilities of TIA offer an open plat-form for advanced, future-oriented andeconomical automation solutions in allsectors of the process industry, manu-facturing industry and hybrid industries. The use of worldwide standards meansthat the system is open and flexible inmany respects. At the field level, a widerange of standardized field devices(PROFIBUS DP/PA, HART) can be inte-grated.

The adjacent Fig. shows the integrationof PROFIBUS PA in SIMATIC PCS 7. Themost important features of the configu-ration are the optimized communica-tion throughout all hierarchical levelsand central engineering for all compo-

nents.Communication between the auto-mation system and field devices onPROFIBUS PA takes place via representa-tive blocks in the CPU. There are fiverepresentative blocks (analog input/out-put, digital input/output, totalizer) withwhich all field devices are covered. Theinputs and outputs of these blocks"represent" the field devices in the CPUto facilitate access to the operator sys-tem via the plant bus. The blocks areconfigured in the central engineeringsystem. The configuration data are alsogenerated there and loaded duringcommissioning into the DP/PA link andthe field devices.

The SIMATIC PDM parameterizationsoftware is used for commissioning anddiagnostics of the field devices. It is exe-cuted in the engineering system andcan communicate directly with fielddevices via the communication levels.

Up to 10 DP lines can be used per CPUfor access to the field level. Since allfield components are connectedtogether on the PROFIBUS DP, it is easyto adapt the field instrumentation tothe physical characteristics of the plant,e.g. one DP line per subsystem.

    Safe communication withPROFIBUS DP (PROFISafe)

Now that PROFIBUS DP hasextended the total inte-gration of distributedautomation to the processenvironment by meansof the PROFIBUS PA ver-sion (IEC 1158-2), the

PROFISafe profile expands thePROFIBUS DP communication betweenCPU and process I/O by safety-relatedfunctions for the protection of persons, plants and the environment.

PROFISafe permits coverage of theextremely fast response times in theproduction sector on the one hand andthe extremely low-power instrumentmode in the process sector on the otherby one totally integrated solution.

A safety bus implemented withPROFISafe is one of the open systems. The defined interfaces and procedurespermit use of a permanently increasingnumber of safety devices (F hosts andF slaves) and systems with a flexibleconstellation. Both standard and safety-oriented communication are carried out

on one single cable, which not onlyresults in enormous saving of cablingrequirements and stocking of parts, butalso provides the advantage of retrofit-ting. Both standard and safety-orientedcommunication can also be distributedon different PROFIBUS lines if required.

The safety measures are encapsulatedin the communication stations. Thisencapsulation means that the usefulload of standard PROFIBUS telegrams isextended by a few bytes of informationwhich guarantee safe communication.

The PROFISafe profile supports fail-safecommunication for applications up tosafety class SIL 3 according toIEC 61508, up to requirement classAK 6 according to DIN V 19250/DIN VVDE 0801, and up to category 4 accord-ing to EN 954-1.

Availability is an important factor withsafety systems, and can be increasedusing a redundant design of the com-plete system. This was taken into con-sideration right from the beginning ofthe PROFISafe development.

    SIMATIC PDM

The SIPART DR controllers and theSIMOCODE are representatives ofPROFIBUS DP devices in the Fig. onpage 5.

The PROFIBUS DP is connected here to aSIMATIC S7-400 automation system. The S7-400 permits connection ofseveral DP segments.

    Routing

Routing allows access from a centrallocation commonly from the engi-neering station to device parametersand to the status of any process device

that is part of an installation. Reconnec-tion of the DP interface of the PC to thecorrect DP segment in each case issuperfluous, thus eliminating a possiblesource of faults.

    It is then possible to:

Read diagnostics information fromthe field devices

Modify device settings Calibrate and adjust field devices

    Monitor process values

Generate simulation values in thefield device

    Modify the field device parameters.

    Communication

SIMATIC PDM supports several commu-nications protocols and components forcommunication with the followingdevices:

    Devices with PROFIBUS DP interface

These are connected directly on thePROFIBUS DP. An example is theSIPART DR20 process controller.

    Devices with PROFIBUS PA interface

    e.g. the SITRANS P transmitter

    Remote I/O stations, e.g. ET 200M

The PROFIBUS PA devices supportedby SIMATIC PDM are connected to thePROFIBUS DP segment via a DP/PA linkor DP/PA coupler.

The fully integrated PROFIBUS devicescan be parameterized, as well asalmost all PROFIBUS devices with thefollowing PA profiles of versions 2.0and 3.0:- Pressure and temperature- Level and flow- Actuators- Discrete I/Os- Analyzers (only PA profile

    version 3.0)Devices with HART interface

These devices can be connected indifferent manners:- Via the SIMATIC ET 200M distributed

I/O station with the HART modules- Via the ET 200iS distributed I/O sta-

tion with HART on PROFIBUS accord-ing to PNO

    - Via a HART modem with which apoint-to-point connection is estab-lished between a PC or engineeringstation and the HART device

    - Via HART multiplexers present in theHART server of the HCF (HART Com-munication Foundation).

Further HART devices can be parame-terized in addition to the fully-inte-grated, HART-compatible devices.

Controllers with serial SIPART DRcommunication via RS 232 / RS 485

Controllers from the SIPART range canbe parameterized via the so-calledSIPART DR network.

    Device Description Language

SIMATIC PDM supports field devicesconforming to the PROFIBUS PA profiledescriptions provided by PROFIBUSInternational (PNO), as well as field

devices which are supported by an Elec-tronic Device Description (EDD) andHART Device Description (HART-DD).

The design and functions of the fielddevices are described by the ElectronicDevice Description Language EDDLspecified by the PNO. SIMATIC PDMautomatically creates its GUI with thecorresponding field device informationusing these descriptions. The HART fielddevices described by HART-DDL are inte-grated into SIMATIC PDM using the HCFcatalog (Hart Communication Founda-tion). HART-DDL is a widely accepted

standard and is strongly supported bydevice vendors.

Additional field devices from Siemensas well as devices from other vendorscan be simply integrated into SIMATICPDM by importing their device descrip-tions (EDD, GSD).

    Access protection

SIMATIC PDM supports two differentgroups of users: specialists and mainte-nance engineers. The maintenanceengineer can modify the operatingdata, the specialist can access all

parameters and functions.A password can be assigned as requiredas access protection for specialists.

Diagnostics with PROFIBUS PA and SIMATIC PCS 7

    Status information from PROFIBUS PAdevices

Each PROFIBUS PA device delivers a sta-tus together with each measured value.

This status contains a variety of diag-nostics information on the measuredvalue delivered by the device, in accor-dance with the profile definition ofPROFIBUS International (PNO).

The standard diagnostics informationdelivered by the PROFIBUS PA devicesincludes e.g.:

    Device faults,

    Maintenance requests,

Operating mode (automatic or localoperation) of a positioner,

    Configuration fault etc.

Compression of information usingstandard SIMATIC PCS 7 functionblocks

The status information can be inter-preted, compressed or output as alpha-numeric messages in SIMATIC PCS 7using standard CFC blocks, alwaysbased on the PNO profile definition.

Practice-oriented PCS 7 diagnosticsblocks for Siemens field devices

In addition to this, practice-orienteddiagnostics blocks are available which

are specially tuned to Siemens fielddevices and are ready to use.

These blocks provide precise messagetexts optimally matched to the respec-tive device which are more comprehen-sive than those of the standard definedin the profile. Examples include:

"Deviation fault" (SIPART PS2), e.g.resulting from compressed air failure(also see Fig. above)

    "Function check"(ULTRAMAT/OXYMAT).

Furthermore, the diagnostics blocksprovide evaluation of the status with

respect to time, e.g. by the message"Continuous overload".

For specific field devices, the diagnos-tics blocks also have an interface foruser functions which would otherwisehave to be configured in addition, e.g.autocalibration for gas analyzers.

This increased degree of convenience isoffered for the following PROFIBUS PAfield devices from Siemens, e.g.SITRANS P, SITRANS T, SITRANS F US,SITRANS LR, SIPART PS2, ULTRAMAT,OXYMAT or SIPAN.

The diagnostics messages permit opera-tors to react more rapidly, and to informthe maintenance personnel moreexactly. Operators know, for example, that a device has to be replaced in thenear future, or that a device is currentlybeing configured or calibrated and thuscannot carry out any measurements.

These messages are displayed on theoperator station (OS), and are saved inthe OS message archive together with atime stamp and the tag number.

    Specific maintenance informationusing SIMATIC PDM

Detailed information which is excep-tionally appropriate as a decision basisfor further actions can be called fromfield devices using SIMATIC PDM, e.g.

whether the device is positioned in anunsuitable location resulting in anexcessively high temperature for themeasuring electronics, or whether it hasto be tested and repaired by a mainte-nance engineer. Thus service measurescan be planned before a device fails.

    Integration in MES systems

If required, the diagnostics messagescan also be evaluated by host comput-ers via the standard interfaces ofSIMATIC PCS 7, e.g. via the OPC inter-face.

Diagnostics display (left) on the operator station with plant topology. One field device is faulty (red symbol) on the PROFIBUS PA line.

The associated message "Deviation" is displayed in the message line. Clicking the faulty field device displays a process view (right) in which an

operator can recognize that the inlet valve has been closed and can no longer be opened. SIMATIC PDM can be used if required to read further

detailed information from the field device.

    DP/PA coupler and DP/PA link

    PROFIBUS-DP/PA transition

To guarantee a problem-freetransition between PROFIBUS DP andPROFIBUS PA with their different trans-mission systems, the SIMATIC rangeprovides the DP/PA coupler andDP/PA link as gateways. Their respectiveapplication depends on the plant size, the required performance, and theautomation system used:

The DP/PA coupler is used for smallquantity breakdowns (signal quanti-ties) and low timing requirements

The DP/PA link is used for large quan-tity breakdowns and high timingrequirements.

    DP/PA link

    Application

The DP/PA link is a very simplegateway that links PROFIBUS DP andPROFIBUS PA together in a mannerwhereby data transmission decouplingis retained. PROFIBUS DP andPROFIBUS PA can thus be combinedwithout influencing the processing per-formance of PROFIBUS DP.

The DP/PA link permits the design oflarge systems with extensive addressvolumes and demanding requirementswith respect to cycle time. It can beoperated on standard PROFIBUS DPmasters.

    Mode of operation

The DP/PA link functions as a slave onthe PROFIBUS DP and as a master on thePROFIBUS PA. From the viewpoint of theautomation system or process controlsystem, the DP/PA link is a modularslave. The individual modules of thisslave are the field devices connected to

the lower-level PROFIBUS PA system. The field devices are addressed indi-rectly via the DP/PA link.

Thanks to data transmission decou-pling, the maximum transmission rateof up to 12 Mbits/s can be utilized onthe PROFIBUS DP side.

The addressing capacity of the systemis considerably increased due to the factthat up to 31 field devices can be con-nected to a DP/PA link, but theDP/PA link only reserves onePROFIBUS DP address.

    Design

The DP/PA link is of modular designaccording to the S7-300 format. It comprises the IM 157 interfacemodule and one or more DP/PA couplers

in the versions either for hazardous ornon-hazardous applications.

Use of active bus modules as the back-plane bus permits the hot swapping ofindividual modules during operation aswell as a redundant design for thePROFIBUS DP interface. High-availabilityapplications are therefore possibletogether with the AS 414H/AS 417Hautomation systems.

Versions of the DP/PA link for hazardousor non-hazardous applications are alsoconfigurable by combination of theIM 157 with hazardous or non-hazard-ous versions of the DP/PA coupler.

This modular system can be extended toup to 5 PROFIBUS PA lines per DP con-nection. These lines are physically iso-lated as far as the power supply is con-cerned, but constitute one bus systemfor communications aspects.
