Transcript of PCM5: The Game Changer - NovaTech · PDF filePCM5: The Game Changer Controller Virtualization...
The NovaTech D/3® Process Control Module 5 Series (PCM5)
represents a leap forward in the development, virtualization,
and Cyber Security capabilities of the D/3 PCM family. The
upcoming PCM5™ will deliver even higher levels of agility and
performance to the DCS with the longest life cycle support and
lowest total cost-of-ownership in the industry: the D/3.
PCM5: The Game Changer
Controller Virtualization
• Develop applications, test, and train on virtual PCMs
• Applications proven on the development system can be downloaded to the physical PCMs in the plant
Integral Firewall
• Prevent unauthorized access at the controller level with multi-factor verification
• Virtually eliminates the need for security appliances between the PCM5, servers, workstations, and I/O
• Reduce configuration time, failure risks, hardware proliferation costs, and system complexity
Hardware andSoftware Enhancements
• Intuitive GUI-driven diagnostic and troubleshooting tools
• High precision 64-bit numbers in select analog control blocks
• Larger Sequence and Batch Language (SABL) program size
• Linux OS tools including enhanced memory dump
Controller LevelFirewall
The PCM5 will bring state-of-the-art Cyber Security to the controller level to ensure unparalleled process integrity.
Industry Leading Cyber Security
An integral firewall secures the PCM5 against communications from unauthorized ports and protocols. By eliminating the need for external security appliances between PCMs and servers, workstations and I/O modules, the integral firewall reduces configuration time, failure risks, hardware proliferation costs and overall system complexity.
The suite of Cyber Security features in the PCM5 are based on the strict federal Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards for secure substations. Coupled with the complete defense-in-depth security architecture of the D/3 System, the PCM5 is compatible with ISA/IEC 62443-compliant security processes.
The growing risk of cyber attacks and information theft looms large in the minds of process plant personnel. At NovaTech, we believe in solving problems before they become problems, so the PCM5 will lead the industry by providing a full suite of Cyber Security risk mitigation technologies—including firewall, strong passwords, remote authentication, encrypted protocols, syslog, and remote administration—at the process controller level.
Touchscreen DisplayField-Proven Hardware
The new high-visibility, 4.3” LCD-TFT touchscreen front panel display replaces the toggles and switches of the PCM 4100 and 4200. It displays information such as IP address and allows users to enable a memory scrub and set Ethernet speed via intuitive icon-based navigation.
The PCM5 rack mount hardware design, while new to the process industry, has been deployed for years in hundreds of electric utility substations. The PCM5 reduces maintenance concerns using a fanless design with no hard drive or other moving parts.

FutureDevelopments
Advanced Process Control (APC)PCM5 APC functionality will be Integrated at the controller level rather than via an application. With common databases, information will only have to be entered once and are automatically populated into the appropriate models.
Higher Math Functions Extensions to SABL are to include Arrays, Matrix Math, and 64-bit precision.
61131-3 ProgrammingProgramming Language for PLCs will provide a more accessible method of programming the system for new D/3 users.
The PCM5 Online Data Debugging Interface provides visual interface to PCM5 data (vs previous hexadecimal)
Larger SABL Programs
Simplified Diagnostics
The SABL program size is greatly expanded. SABL programmers need not be concerned about modifying their designs or strategies due to program size limits.
Information is now displayed in text rather than hexadecimal numbers. Use of Linux in the PCM5 has made additional tools such as enhanced memory dump capabilities available. The new diagnostics accelerate the learning curve and expand controller troubleshooting ability to a more broad-based D/3 user skill set.
