2014 SHUTOUTS

SAVING GRACE: RH Blake Parker finished the season with 25 saves (in 26 chances) to lead the league and tie the Iowa single-season record. Parker is the first Iowa pitcher to lead the PCL in saves. RH Jermaine Van Buren also saved 25 games in 2005, but finished second in the league that year. Parker now has two of the top three individual saves seasons in franchise history. The last Iowa pitcher to lead the league in saves was Laddie Renfroe in 1991 when the Cubs played in the American Association. Parker became the franchise’s all-time saves leader last season and now has 66 career saves in an Iowa uniform. RH Brian Schlitter saved three games this season to move into second place on Iowa’s career saves list with 36.

SETTING THE PACE: 2B/OF Arismendy Alcantara batted .307 (103-for-335) with 25 doubles, 11 triples, 10 home runs, 41 RBI, and 21 stolen bases in 89 games with Iowa before getting called up on July 9. At the time of his promotion, he was leading the league in triples and extra-base hits (46). He was tied for the league-lead in runs scored (62), ranked second in doubles and total bases (180), was third in hits, fourth in steals, and eighth in slugging (.537). Alcantara ended up leading the league in triples. He is the eighth Iowa player to lead the league in triples and the third to lead the PCL. Brett Jackson was the last to do it when he recorded 12 in 2012.

BLAME IT ON THE RAIN: The Cubs had seven games postponed by weather this season. Five of the seven were road games and all seven came before the end of May. The Cubs had another 11 games delayed by rain during the year and one delayed by travel problems for El Paso on June 17. Delays in the games totaled 19 hours and 32 minutes for the year. The Cubs endured nine hours and 46 minutes worth of delays in one series at Memphis, May 27-30. The Cubs and Redbirds waited through a four hour, 11 minute rain delay before getting started in game one of a scheduled double-header on the final day of that series. That is the longest rain delay on record for the Cubs, surpassing a four hour and eight-minute delay on May 8, 2013 at Colorado Springs. Game two of that twin bill ending up being postponed due to travel and curfew considerations and was made up at Principal Park in July.

ON THE OFFENSIVE: The Cubs finished last in the league in batting with a .254 team batting average. The only other time that the Cubs finished last in the league in batting was 1999 with a .263 final mark. The Cubs hit .250 as a team last season and ranked 15th out of 16 teams in the PCL. These are the two lowest team batting marks that Cubs have posted since joining the PCL in 1998. The Cubs finished 14th out of 16 teams with 644 runs scored this season, 79 more than last year’s total. The team was held to three runs or less in 69 games this season and finished 14-55 in those contests.

RUNNING MEN: The Cubs finished second in the league with 135 stolen bases this season. Omaha led the league with 147. This was Iowa’s highest stolen base total since joining the PCL. OF Matt Szczur led the team with 30 steals in 37 attempts and is the first Cub to steal 30 bases in a season since Trenidad Hubbard swiped 36 in 2004. This was the first time in the Cubs’ PCL history that the team has had three different players finish with at least 20 steals this year and tied a mark with five players finishing with at least 10: Logan Watkins (23), Arismendy Alcantara (21), Javy Baez (16), and Ryan Kalish (12). Five players reached double digits in 1999 and 2010.

FAIRY TALE ENDINGS: The Cubs had seven walk-off wins this season, including two on game-ending home runs. Brett Jackson socked a three-run homer to give the Cubs a 7-4 win in the eighth inning of game two of a double-header against Omaha on July 1 and Kris Bryant launched a two-run homer in the 12th inning to give the Cubs a 6-5 win over Las Vegas on August 14.
