A message from our PresidentWow, what a year! 2019 was a year of firsts for me and I am blessed and grateful to have so many wonderful women that surround me and lift me up in the good and not so good times.

Our events last year have been wonderful. I have met so many lovely women of our Diocese and I am looking forward to meeting so many more on a personal basis.

We are preparing for Women of Faith/Women of Action coming up March 28, 2020 and I will tell you…..the guest speakers are going are dynamite! Please mark your calendars and plan to come – you will not be disappointed.

Our one-day convention is scheduled for May 16, 2020 at Holy Name of Jesus Church in West Palm Beach. The guest speaker has been secured and it will be a day of great information and fun. Please mark your calendar to plan to attend. The packets will be sent out as soon as I have all the information complete.

Since our convention is a one-day convention, we are planning our Presidents Breakfast on April 25th – please mark your calendar if you are an incoming or 2nd year president. Spirituality

A Holy War is defined as a war which God fights. That means that He does not assist us in fighting the war – He fights it Himself. When I look around the world today, I can only pray that God will fight the war. We cannot prevail over fires, earthquakes, storms and other natural disasters. But God can. We cannot eliminate the killing in this world, whether by abortion, euthanasia or just plain evil. But God can. We cannot change the hearts of people who have turned their backs on God. But God can. We need to spend more time praying and less time worrying. Worry is not believing God will get it right. We need to heed the words of Jesus: “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matt 19:26

2

With men this is

impossible,but with God all

things are possible.

Leadership

PBDCCW LEADERSHIP TRAINING TEAM

As this new decade begins, let’s take a moment to reflect and share our true passion for Christ Jesus, and in the eyes of Blessed Mary, our faithful mother, we are women of faith created to share our unique gifts as #CCW Proud leaders… The journey of 2020 new year begins with a personal quote that keeps a focus on what kind of leader we are led to be, from The Art of Leadership book by J. Donald Walters, “Genuine leadership is of only one type: SUPPORTIVE. It leads people, doesn’t drive them; It involves them, doesn’t coerce them; It never loses sight of the most important principle involving human beings: that people are more important than things.”

As your leadership training team, our primary focus is undoubtedly, next to Jesus, your SUPPORT and we are ecstatic to generously give of ourselves for the betterment of our sisterhood and grow your affiliations in faith and fellowship.

To be more accessible to your affiliations, we have divided the team into deaneries to proactively assist with your training needs and provide local support as we, your leadership mentors/cheerleaders, are here to guide affiliations within their locations and to help reduce travel requirements. Here are your trainers and their deanery breakdown:

3

Genuine leadership is of

only one type:

SUPPORTIVE.

ServiceAs previously announced, our service project this year is collecting items for the Florida victims of Human Trafficking. I am happy to report that we are getting many items listed on our service project list. I am working on getting a list of places that will be our designated drop off centers. We will have a card created noting that we, CCW sisters, send prayers and our admiration of their courage to move forward.

Our service project list includes leggings, t-shirts, and flip-flops; discounted services, tattoo removal, dental services, and landlord assistance; gift cards in $10 or $15 amounts to WalMart, Dunkin' Donuts, McDonald’s etc. for needed treats as these victims begin transition into a new life. Let's show our support!

Protocol for Guest Speakers and Opening Exercises One of the ways the various levels of Council live out our mission statement to support, empower, and educate all Catholic Women through spirituality, service and leadership is by providing authoritative guest speakers at appropriate venues, such as deanery meetings, conventions, training sessions, and the like. If a member, other than the president, is assigned to coordinate the speakers visit, she must keep the president informed either directly or through copies of any correspondence to the speaker. Details should be provided to the speaker in writing, either by letter or email message, and include at least the following:

• Date and Place of Meeting • Time speaker is to arrive and the name of his/her hostess • If a meal function, ask about any dietary restrictions • Length of time allotted for presentation (this is VERY

important) • Request information so YOU OR YOUR DESIGNEE

may prepare an appropriate introduction. • If it is a professional, paid speaker confirm the terms of

payment. 5

Our mission this year

is to identify what

we can do to help

these victims.

-Carol Minich, PBDCCW Service

During this term of office,

Betty McKinley, Past

PBDCCW President

(2005-2007) will be a guest

columnist. Her column will

focus mainly on protocol.

Page 6: PBDCCW Messenger January/February 2020€¦ · Name of Jesus Church in West Palm Beach. The guest speaker has been secured and it will be a day of great information and fun. Please

Jan/Feb 2020

The introduction should be brief. Some say the more important the guest the shorter the introduction. After all, we hear, “Ladies and Gentlemen, the President of the United States of America.” How short is that?!” It is recommended that the speaker’s name is used only at the end of the introduction. It can be embarrassing if the speaker thinks he/she is being called upon and begins to rise before the introduction is complete. Throughout the introduction refer to “our speaker” or “today’s speaker,” etc., ending with something like, “Please help me welcome the title if any________________,name ___________________.

The hostess should be an experienced member. Be sure she knows what is expected of her. It may include:

• Meeting the speaker at a designated place. • Introducing him/her to the president and any clergy who

may be present. • Being sure she/he knows location of restrooms and

where he/she will be seated. • Having water available at the lectern and pointing out to

the speaker where it is (should be as inconspicuous as possible)

At the meeting itself, remember it is “God before country.” If both a prayer and the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America are offered, the prayer always comes first.

1954  "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States  of America

and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible,

with liberty and justice for all.

Note there is no comma in the statement “one Nation under God.” It should be said as one phrase.

Deanery PresidentsNorthern Deanery began the New Year with our first fundraiser, a Quarters Auction hosted by St. Helen’s Affiliation on Saturday, January 4th. A good time was had by all who attended, and it was a great success as well. St. Helen’s CCW Sisters were warm and welcoming. And, yes, I did say FIRST fundraiser, as our enthusiastic Vice President, Millie Del Grosso has planned TWO fundraisers for the ND. The second one being the popular Brown Bag Bingo and Luncheon scheduled for Saturday, March 14th at the Knights of Columbus in Port St. Lucie. Doors open at 11 am. - $10 covers lunch and 2 bingo cards. Brown Bag prizes will be given to the Bingo winners; and if you’re feeling lucky, you can buy tickets for the Raffle Prizes and of course, there will be 50/50 chances!

I look forward to seeing many of our council sisters at the Brown Bag Bingo and at Catholic Women of Faith, Women of Action on March 28th. God Bless!

This President would like to say thank you for all you do in God’s name, each of you are Special and Unique. The Central Deanery is truly Blessed to have such wonderful women being the hands and feet of the Blessed Mother. When I think of my service in this organization and all aspect of my life, I think of “Joy” of giving and serving others and the Joy within my heart. It’s very simple when you give Joy, you receive back Joy. It’s important to pray before you do anything, if you are giving it’s important for the recipient to receive with great pleasure and happiness. We are all so busy with life and the world and our service that we forget to take time for ourselves. We too must take time for God ourselves not just go through the motions. We need to be filled. Take time to pray, reflect, meditate and be grateful. Fill ourselves so when we serve, the joy and love becomes exuberant. God wants to see our hearts joyful. May you always be rejoiceful and serve with love!

gifts to serve others.

The women of the Southern Deanery have been very busy:

hosing Christmas Bazaars, Days of Reflection, Membership

Drives, Box of Joy and many other great events. This season is

off to a wonderful start!

Southern Deanery will be hosting a Brown Bag Bingo on March

20,2020 at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Doors will open at

6:30 pm. There will be refreshments, prizes and lots of fun! All

are invited; bring a friend.

PBDCCW Committee UpdatesOver fifty people from the Diocese of Palm Beach attended Catholic Days at the Capitol, joining members of the six other Florida dioceses. On the afternoon of January 28th all participants filed into the Leon County Civic Center for a briefing by members of the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops (FCCB).

The briefings focused on three bills in the Florida 2020 Legislative Session.

1. Parental consent prior to abortion. SB 404 (Stargel) and HB 265 (Grall). This bill requires consent from a parent or legal guardian before a minor can have an abortion. The bill includes a judicial waiver process if a minor fears parental abuse. The FCCB supports this bill and its companion in the House, HB 265 (Grall).

2. Death Penalty Repeal SB 938 (Farmer, Jr.) and HB 6045 (Geller) delete all provisions for the death penalty. The FCCB supports both bills.

3. Assisted Suicide SB 1800 (Rader). This bill which would remove Florida’s prohibition on assisted suicide has no companion bill in the House. The FCCB opposes this bill.

At the end of the briefing participants broke into their assigned small groups to prepare for their meeting with the legislators on the next day. Members of the FCCB were present to address any points that needed clarification.

On Wednesday January 29thparticipants from our diocese visited 12 legislators or their aides to advocate for the FCCB position on the above bills. In the morning of January 30 participants visited an additional 4 legislators.

Eighteen students from Cardinal Newman High School, West Palm Beach, and two of their teachers joined the Diocese of Palm Beach delegation. This gave the students an opportunity to view firsthand the workings of government and to learn to advocate for issues with the legislators. About 15 members of our various CCW affiliations who attended had the opportunity of interacting with the young students.

Some CCW ladies were able to attend the second reading of SB 404 on Parental Consent at the Senate floor. The Bill was successfully placed for the third reading. It has since passed the Senate. Companion House Bill 265 has passed committees and it is placed on second reading on House Calendar.

A big THANK YOU to all of this year’s Inspirations Fashion Show attendees! You were all a great part of this wonderful event. The venue and the weather contributed to what was a beautiful day. All of the help and hard work seemed to have paid off, from the programs to the beautiful baskets and models. Fun was had by all involved!

Thank you all who contributed in any way to make this event so special. With the help of the Holy Spirit, our Blessed Mother, and much prayer and preparation, the vision of this day became a reality. The intentions of inspiring, supporting, and empowering our women was hopefully fulfilled; as well as initiating a conscious openness to inspire our future legacies to the PBDCCW. Blessings to all of you for participating; we look forward to what’s to come!

Happy New Year and welcome to a new decade of prayer and service! Our Women of Faith Women of Action Conference will be upon us before you know it.

This year is shaping up to be one of great joy and inspiration. Our morning speakers will be our women of faith, Winkie LeFils and Rosi Schuhmacher and our afternoon speaker is our woman of action, Susie Harting.

The event will be on March 28, 2020 at Our Lady Queen of the Apostles Church. We will again be spiritually fed by our Bishop Gerald Barbarito at Mass and will have an opportunity for individual confessions, as well as visit with the relics of Saint Pope John Paul II and Saint Maria Faustina.

The registration fee is a modest $35.00 by March 16, 2020 ($40.00 at the door). This includes a light breakfast and a boxed lunch.

We hope to see everyone there!

Copies of this year’s application can currently be accessed on our website at www.pbdccw.org Applications which are received on or before the deadline, will be checked for completeness, and every effort will be made to contact candidates to obtain any missing information if time permits. It is very important that each affiliation submit their portion of funds for scholarship in a prompt and timely manner; due date is April 1st. Additional support through private donations is always welcome. It is hoped you will reflect on your own experiences and opportunities of Catholic education and support this very important effort. Questions and suggestions can be directed to myself, Christine Rodic, at [email protected]. (Please write PBDCCW Scholarship in the subject line.) or I may be reached on my cell 772-359-8103.
