As you "Discover Parry Sound", please take the time to visit our Sponsors. They are here year round to serve you! PAST INDUSTRY Before the eco-revolution of late 20th Century, chemical plants abounded in the Parry Sound Area. This 1915 photograph from the archives of the West Parry Sound District Museum shows cordite workers posing for a picture outside the Canadian Explosives Limited (CXL) plant in Nobel. The CXL plant produced gelatin and cordite during World War One and contributed greatly to the Allied war effort. Most of the employees were women as they had to work in the factories since the men had left for war. After the war, CXL swapped explosives for paint and became CIL which ultimately closed in 1984. For more information, stop by the West Parry Sound District Museum on Tower Hill or visit www.wpsdm.ca. MAYOR RICHARD ADAMS WELCOMES YOU! On behalf of Town and Council, I welcome you to Parry Sound. We are located on the shores of Georgian Bay halfway between Barrie and Sudbury on the 400/69 corridor. Parry Sound can truly offer you a four seasons destination. As Mayor of Parry Sound, I pledge that our Municipal Council will work hard to fulfill our duties with dignity and integrity and bring to you good government so that trust and confidence will be earned and people will be proud of our Town. SUPPORT THE GIRLS! Come to Mark’s Work Wearhouse to see the Art-Bras designed in support of the $650,000 drive for Digital Mammography Equipment at the West Parry Sound Health Centre. GENERATION Z To encourage the adoption of alternative energy, the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) has doubled the rate of remuneration for solar generation facilities. In 2007, Zeuter Development Corporation (Zeuter) became the first independent generator in Parry Sound District. Solar farms provide the power to run Zeuter’s wireless network now extending over several hundred square miles. Ironically, the announcement of $225M in funding for wireless internet last fall has stalled further expansion as funding cannot be applied retroactively. The announcement of disbursement of funding is now more than five months behind schedule. FRED EAGLESMITH RETURNS Join White Squall in Carling for their Annual Paddle Party & Open House on May 22nd and 23rd. Folk Singer and Songwriter Fred Eaglesmith returns to help celebrate White Squall’s 25th Anniversary! Test drive the latest kayaks, canoes and boards. Enjoy informal paddling workshops with our trained and knowledgeable staff. Let our staff take you where no other boats can go. Learn about Canvas Boat Building, Navigation, Birding and Boat Repairs. For the kids, there is a picnic with campfire singalongs. Bring a friend or meet someone new at the Outdoor Gear Raffle.
