PawPrints Magazine's HOMELESS COVER MODELS

You don’t need the luck of the Irish to adopt one of us. Just pick the one you love, then fill out the adoption

paperwork - it’s so easy! My name is Razzle and I’m the pure-black kitten

sitting in the bottom photo. Above me, and on the cover, are my brothers

and sisters. From left to right, they’re:

Rikki, Ruckus, Risa and Rumpus.

Rumpus and Ruckus are the

boys. Seated next to me is my orange friend, AC. He’s thought to be an American Curl mix because his ears curl back.

We are all 8-week-old kittens who are used to being cuddled and kissed by humans. My siblings and I were born on New Year’s Day. We have a great

time playing together, hopping and skipping around the room and pouncing on toys. AC was rescued from a shelter where he was running out of time.

He’s a cuddly little boy with a lot of love to give. If you’d like to adopt one or more of us, please call

Cat Tails Adoption Agency at 910-253-1375. You can also email them at [email protected]. Our

thanks go to Dick Parrott for taking our photos. We hope it’s the lucky charm we need to get adopted!

My name is Leroy and I am a 2-year-

old Chow cross with a pretty blue

tongue! I am currently being fostered by the nice people at

Pets Plus Grooming in

Porter's Neck. When I came to my foster

home I had been living at the Pender County Animal Shelter for a long time. My hair was so matted and smelly that no

one would even think about taking me home with them. My foster mom said it was so bad that they had to shave me so that the sores on my skin could heal. They also say that I probably started life out on a chain in the backyard. Wow, do I love living inside! I am a smart boy and am completely house-trained and crate-trained. I have been neutered and treated for parasites, too! Right now I am undergoing treat-ment for heart worms. My treatments will be done soon and

I am looking for my forever home. I am a sweet boy who loves the ladies! I am quite shy with men but do warm up to them eventually. I am good with kitties and love to play with

children, but I am not fond of other dogs. I want all of the hugs and kisses and attention to be mine, so I need to be an

only dog. I walk well on a leash and ride well in the car. The groomer here says I'm great! Won't you take me

home? Call 910-681-0510 for more info on adopting me.

My name is Irwin, and I am named after Steve Irwin, another Aussie

gentleman. My perfect home would be with

someone who is famil-iar with Blue Heelers. I am completely true to my breed. I herd, I nip and I feel everything with my mouth. I am energetic and super

smart! I already know sit, down and give me paw. I am very train-able and food moti-

vated. Use it to your advantage. I am excellent with other dogs and I completely submit to them. I am learning not to jump or pull on the lead and would benefit from someone who is authoritative. I walk all over wimpy people - I am just too smart for them. I love to chew but just give me a chew toy and it can entertain me some. A fenced yard and another dog would be beneficial for me. I must be

exercised, stimulated, and would love a job to do. If you don't, I will be bored and will probably get into some trou-ble. I am gorgeous - just check out these markings! I am

neutered, vaccinated, heartworm negative and house-trained. If you would like to know more about me or

would like to inquire about the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting

Insurance Agency in loving memory of Dingo.

How about a wink and a kiss? My name is

Mini Moo because my markings look like a milk cow, although I’m much prettier. I am a 2½-year-old spayed female with lots of love and energy.

I would prefer to live inside because I have very short hair and get

cold easily. I am house-trained and like my

crate, I know several commands (sit, down

and come) plus I’m great on a leash. I love to play ball and enjoy long walks. My only fault is that I don’t always like other dogs or cats.

That’s how I lost my first home, I didn’t play well with the other dogs. My foster home has lots of other dogs, too - so I don’t have the freedom I need and deserve. I am looking for an active home where I can be the only pet.

Please call Amy at 910-253-0501 for more information or to set up a time to meet me.

I am sponsored by Francesca Slaughter in loving

memory of Casper and Lucy.

URGENT, URGENT!

I’m Running Out Of Time!!

Don’t let my relaxed position fool you -

I’m getting worried! I’ve been at Pender County Animal Con-trol since October

2010, and this is my third appearance in PawPrints. There are just too many

cats arriving at the shelter, and not enough cages for us all. Please take a look at my photo - it captures my personality perfectly: relaxed, friendly, and social. Why hasn’t some-one snapped me up? My name is Natalie (FF2819) and

I’m an ebony-colored beauty, just 6-months-old, with golden eyes. I enjoy playing with toys and I love to be held. If you walk past my cage, I’ll hold a paw out, begging for attention. Won’t someone please take me into their heart and home?

If you’re that person, please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196.

See you soon, I hope!

I am sponsored by Representing Buyers Only Inc. PLEASE ADOPT!

My name is Blackie and I was rescued by Pender County

Animal Control Shel-ter. I had been hit by a car and my

back leg was pretty banged up. They transferred me to

Furever Friends so that I could get

medical treatment. My hip and leg had been broken and have since been

repaired. Now I’m going to physical

therapy a few times a week to help build the muscles back up

in my leg. I’m a very happy, super sweet dog who is full of love. I’m approximately 3-years-old, vaccinated, neutered, leash-trained, crate-trained and I’m good with kids, cats and

other dogs. I did test positive for heartworms but will be treated for them at no additional cost to my adoptive family. I’d really love a home because I’m tired of being in a cage. For more info or to adopt me, please call Furever Friends

If you are looking for a gentle giant with a heart of gold, I’m your girl! My name is Penny and I’m a Neapolitan Mastiff who has seen some not-so-

good times. I’m 3 to 4-years of age and a bit underweight, but with

proper care that will be something of the past. I

love people and am espe-cially good with other

dogs. I’ve even lived in a home with cats, gerbils, and an iguana! I love to spend my days close to my human. I am well mannered and want nothing more then to please my human companions. I’m a bit wary of

strangers, barking at them consistently. I need to be intro-duced to them before I will accept them, but then all is fine! Due to my size, it may be best if I do not go to a home with small children. I am very playful but my type of play may

harm little ones. My foster family is working to socialize me, but I would really benefit from professional training with my new family. I am crate-trained, house-trained, heartworm

negative, spayed, up to date on shots, and microchipped. If you are interested in a wonderful, loving Mastiff, please visit www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues.

If you need an application mailed or faxed to you, please call 910-264-8300.

Like every sad story, mine needs a happy ending. Would you consider being my

’happily ever after’? My story began a few

weeks ago when I stumbled into a hunt-ers’ camp, trembling and afraid. I stum-bled because I am

blind, and I had been abandoned in the

woods by some cold-hearted person. It

was scary in those woods - every step was unknown and I often tripped over fallen logs or collided with trees that I

couldn’t see. But I was determined to reach those voices, and reach them I did. The hunters carried me away and got me to Pender County Humane Society. I’m now in a

foster home while I wait for a new family to adopt me. My friends call me Wonder Dog and yes, I’m truly a wonder!

I’m a 2-year-old Shepherd mix boy who is friendly and lov-ing to everyone I meet. I’m ready-made for family life as I’m already house-trained and leash-trained. I get along great with cats, dogs and children and I’m already neu-

tered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Although I am considered blind, I seem to show some awareness of

shadow and light. If you’d like to meet me, please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022. They

would love to tell you just how wonderful I truly am!

I am sponsored by Milo, a Pender County Humane Society shelter dog who found his forever home.

Hi everyone, I am sweet Chloe and this is my brother, Webster. Our

mommy has gotten too sick to take care of us any longer so we have to

find new homes. We can be adopted together or separately so no

worries there. I am a beautiful girl with fabulous stockings and pretty Basset feet. I like my new foster

family and playing with my new fos-ter Basset sister. Though my foster home is great, I'd love to have a new

forever home. Webster is a very gentle, loveable boy who gets along with other dogs. He is so smart that

he even knows how to sit and lay down for a treat. He has the normal Basset bursts of energy at times but he’s not a hyper boy. With wonder-ful house manners, he knows better than to get on the furniture. He is looking for a loving and active for-

ever home. We will reward you with unending love and de-votion. To make one or both of us part of your family, please

call 919-708-4247 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com.

We are sponsored by the UNCW Pre-Veterinary Medical Association. Thank you!

Hi there, my name is Uno! I was found running down a busy street in Burgaw. A

kind couple came to my res-cue and now I’m waiting for a permanent, loving home. I’m a female American Staf-

fordshire Terrier mix, just 3-years-old. My personality could best be described as

friendly and fun-loving. I am spayed, vaccinated, house-trained and leash-trained. I love to be petted and enjoy playing tug-of-war with my rope toys. Pender County

Humane Society wants me to go to the best home pos-sible, so you must be experienced with handling my

breed. A fenced-in yard is also a necessity. I’m not a big fan of cats, but I play just fine with other dogs as

long as I’m introduced slowly. Since I’m a playful, ac-tive girl, I would do best in a home with adults-only or

older children, not tiny ones. If you think we could be a match, please call the shelter at 910-259-7022. I’ll get

my rope toy ready for your visit!

I am sponsored in loving memory of Gage Hawn. He has left us with great memories, and will live on

in our hearts.

March 2011 www.PawPrintsMagazine.com 9

►I’m Summer. I’m 2-years-old and I am perfect. There is a reason why

Labrador Retrievers are the most popular breed in America. I am

completely house-trained and crate-trained. What that means is I never

whine in my crate, I don’t tear up anything, and I have never had an

accident in my foster mom’s house. During the day she lets me roam

through the house and I leave eve-rything the exact way she left it. I

walk great on a leash and would prefer to be the only dog. I don’t really get along with other dogs because that would mean I would have to share my family’s love, and with me

you wouldn’t need any more love. I know all my basic commands. I do have heartworms but I am going through treatment (which is being paid for by Adopt-an-Angel, do-nations are accepted). Monica Bennett paid my adoption

fee out of Animal Control. Thank you!

►My name is Shelby and I’m wonderful. I’m a balanced dog,

well-rounded, laid back and easy. I’m house-trained, spayed, vaccinated and heartworm nega-

tive. I am 1-year-old and was one of the puppies who got re-turned as an adult because my

owner moved and took a job with long hours. I am fantastic and get along well with other animals. I’m so very, very sweet.

◄My name is Callie and I have been homeless for a year now.

It's really sad because I am a very sweet girl. I am so pretty and

dainty, too. I have been going to adoption fairs at Petco every

weekend, all year long, and no one has adopted me yet. I have even lived in the cages at Petco for months on end, too. Won't

anyone out there just say enough is enough and give me a home? I can't even remember why I am homeless anymore. At the fairs, I sometimes

become overwhelmed and frightened and quite honestly - I am tired of being homeless and going to fairs trying to

impress people who only move past me to look at kittens. I am waiting for that special someone who will just take me by my paw and rescue me. Just reach out and touch my

dainty face and tell me it's ok.

◄My name is Valerie and I am a very sweet girl! I am a

little shy, but I am making fantastic progress in my fos-

ter home. I am house-trained, spayed, up to date

on my shots, eager to please, and great with the other ani-mals here. The best part is that I am little, too. I weigh around 25 to 30 pounds at

best and I’m only knee high. My Animal Control adoption fee was sponsored by Jeffry

DiNoto in honor of Steve Pilar. Thank you for helping get me out so I can focus on finding a new home!

◄My name is Frazier and I am adorable! I am such a sweetheart, too. I am good with other animals and I’m submissive and

eager to please and so on and so on. I am a keeper! I am petite, only knee high,

and about 25 pounds. I am neutered, up to date on

shots and crate-trained. I would make a great apartment dog or a friend to some lonely dog you have. I am so cute

when I run and play - I run sideways. I am undergoing heartworm treatment, but will be as good as new once I am

done. No additional cost to my adopter at all unless you choose to donate to my cause. I was sponsored by the

NHC Regional Medical Lab by Donna, Maxine, Lynn and Sean. Thanks, guys, for helping me out in my time of need and paying my adoption fee out of Animal Control. It helps

AAA a lot when people do that.

◄My name is Lucy and am one of the 60 lucky dogs that got out of Pender County Ani-mal Control and into a won-derful foster home! I was in danger of being euthanized and I'm so glad my foster

mom came and got me. Can’t you see how pretty I am? I just love my new collar and

being in a home instead of a cage. My foster mom says I am really sweet and one of my favorite things is to get my nose rubbed. I have pretty good manners and love to take

long walks. I am smart, but need someone to take time with me. My foster mom would keep me, but she works really long hours and says I deserve a better life. By the way, I

am a petite Lab mix weighing no more than 25 to 30 pounds and only about knee high. I am easy going, eager to please

and well-behaved. I am spayed and heartworm free!

THANK YOU TO ART AND SHERRI DROGUE FOR MAKING OUR LARGEST SINGLE DONATION

TO DATE! THANK YOU!

My name is Marley (A037650) and I’m a

Fetch-o-Holic. Just show me a tennis ball and my face lights up in a smile. See my photo? That’s me looking at a tennis

ball. It’s a good thing I’ve got something to make

me happy because I just lost my home. My owner entered Hospice and now I’m at Animal Control. I was once spoiled rotten and treated like a true

family member, but those days are gone. Could

you be the one to save me? I’m a 4-year-old Lab mix who is already house-trained and vaccinated. I get along great with other dogs and am extremely friendly and loving to-

ward humans. When I lay down on my stomach, I stretch my legs out completely behind me - it’s so cute! And boy, do I love those tennis balls. I will fetch them over and over and bring them back to you. When you say ‘drop’, I drop it. I can also catch them in my mouth! I walk well on a

leash and would be a wonderful companion for any kind of household - adults only or a family with kids. PLEASE

don’t miss your chance to adopt a wonderful boy like me! Call Brunswick County Animal Control at 910-754-8204

and let’s meet!

◄Wow! I’m not only beautiful, I’m affectionate too. The perfect package, I’d like to think. My name is Whitney (A037550) and I’m an 8-month-old girl with black, medium-length fur. Around my neck is the prettiest ruff of smoky-grey hair. It’s as glorious as a lion’s mane! I am a total sweetheart who loves to be held and kissed. I purr all the time and get along well with other cats. I’d be such a wonderful family addition. Please hurry on over!

►Hi there, my name is Jonah (A037736). I’m a Yellow Lab who was found as a stray and I hope my future family is reading this! Come

visit and take me in the playroom - you’ll find

that I possess a gentle, loving personality. And offer me a treat so that you can see me dance! Yes, when I see a treat held before me, I hop

back and forth - I call it my treat jig! It’s thought

I’m about 3-years-old and I would love to spend the rest of my years with you.

◄This is what I look like when I’m sitting on command. I’m so smart! My name is Mystery (A032534) and I’m a well-trained, loving girl! I will easily sit and lay down on command, and I am calm and friendly. The perfect family dog, I’d say! I’m not sure what my breed is(it’s a ‘mystery’, I guess) but I am one beautiful girl! I would be great with kids and I love to be petted. You’d be making a great choice if you pick me, so hurry on over today!

◄I hope my sad story will melt your heart… you see, I was once a

beloved family member, but my human dad had to go into Hospice and I had to come to Animal Control. My name is

Sweetie Pie (A037651) and I’m a 5-year-old

female Walker Hound mix who desperately wants to be part of a

family again! I’m great with other dogs,

vaccinated and already house-trained. I am so

gentle - all I want is to feel safe and loved once again.

Friendly, social and extremely affectionate…

that’s me! My name is Catherine

(A037549) and you’d be so

lucky to take me home. I

ADORE people and will roll over in my cage so

you can rub my belly. I’m just 8-months-old, already vaccinated, and I get

along well with other cats. If you lean your face close to mine, I will rub my nose against yours and give kitty kisses. I’d make

any child - or any adult - so very happy! Please adopt me!

◄I love attention and I love to be petted. So where is my family? My name is Brownie (A037299) and

I’m a 1-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier whose

tail wags all the time. I enjoy sitting at your feet and feeling your fingers

scratching my soft head. I also enjoy treats and will stick my arm out in the hope that you’ll shake it and give me a treat in

return! My former owner could no longer keep me so I’m hoping my luck will

change. Take me in the playroom and let’s fall in love!

Call us about our top of the line Laser Therapy!

My name is Recess and I was dumped in the K-2

playground at Bolivia Elementary School.

Yup, you heard it right, they dropped me into

the playground and left me there. Just in case I somehow got in there on

my own, ads were run looking for my owner,

but no one claimed me. I am now neutered but I

did test positive for heartworms, so I will be undergoing heartworm treatment very soon. If you would like to donate toward my vet bills, you can do so online at

www.adoptanangel.net or you can mail tax-deductible donations to Adopt-An-ANGEL at P.O. Box 15095, Wil-mington, NC 28408. I am one of those very loving dogs

who leans into you for love and I melt when you touch me. I am very attached to my people so it would be great if I

went to a home where someone is home a lot. Also, I like dogs so that would be cool, too. If you would like to know more about me or would like to inquire about adoption, call

Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557.

I am sponsored by the Miss Avis Davis Fund, thanks!

I’m a 10-month-old Shih Tzu named Yoda! Don’t I look cute in

my leather coat and fur collar? (Don’t worry, it’s faux fur! I was

recently shaved and feeling a little chilly, so this helps!) I was found on Route 53 and taken to Pender

County Humane Society. My own-ers have never been found, so I

am up for adoption! I have a very sweet disposition and love to go

for rides in the car. I’m also leash-trained and 90% house-trained (I hope to be at 100% soon). I’m in a foster home right now and I follow my foster mom around the house. I sleep in a crate at night and enjoy making a nest out of my blankets. I’m good with other dogs, but I like to chase cats. I’m not

aggressive toward felines, I just want to play with them, but the cats don’t seem to understand that. I LOVE people and enjoy being held. As for my health, I am already neutered,

vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Would you like to adopt me? Please call Pender County Humane Society at

910-259-7022 and let’s make some plans!

I am sponsored by George, Brenda and John Harriss in loving memory of Miss Scarlett, Rosie Belle, Candy and

Lady, special friends, all.

◄I give the sweetest Eskimo kisses, so they’ve called me Mo! I lost my home due to a foreclosure which is very sad because I’m such a wonderful family cat. I will sleep with my humans at night if it’s allowed, and I enjoy playing with all sorts of toys. I’ll be sure to keep you entertained. Kids would love me and I bet you would, too! I’m a 7-month-old boy who is healthy and litterbox-trained. Let’s go home!

was running out of time. I love to be held and

petted and I get along great with other kitties and human children. I

also have a playful streak and am a low

maintenance girl. And, of course, I’m already

spayed, vaccinated and great in the litterbox. At just 1-year-old, I’d like to devote my life to loving you. Please give me the chance!

◄Hello, I’m Moozer! I’m a young, friendly boy who is super-cute and super-gentle and I want nothing more than to be loved and petted. I’m also playful. Just wave that feather toy around and I’ll pounce and chase it and have a grand time. I love to listen to music on the car radio and hope that soon I’ll be listening to tunes from your car as you drive me home. Come see what a sweet boy I am in person, please!

◄Golden fur and golden eyes...I’m a true beauty! My name is FuzzBuzz

and I’m a 2-year-old boy with medium-length fur. I

am loving, playful and cuddly, everything you’d

want in a cat! I was rescued from a hoarding situation, so I’m definitely used to living with other kitties. I’d be fine as a solo cat, too. I have a very gentle personality

and would be a fine friend for human children. Oh yes, I’m also neutered,

vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Come meet me today!

►It’s a mystery

how a cutie like me

came to be running out of time at Animal

Control, but sometimes great cats like me get overlooked! My name is Nikki and I’m a 6-month-old girl with beautiful Tabby stripes and tangerine-colored eyes. I’m a very sweet girl who would

love to be part of someone’s family. I’m already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox trained so I’m ready to go!

◄My elderly owner could not keep me because she went into a

nursing home. I’m a bit confused

right now because I was given so much

attention and love in my

former home. I’m so happy when someone reaches in my cage and pets me - I butt my head against their head in

happiness. My name is Maggie and I’m a 3-year-old girl who is praying to be loved again. Would you come get me?

Love Connection

Where Is She Now?

Lady, re-named Sadie, featured in July 2010

A life-long Chow lover, Diane Piersma couldn’t help but notice the pure-bred Chow named Lady in the July 2010 issue of PawPrints. Still, she had just lost her beloved com-panion of 17 years, Meeko, also a white Chow, and was hesitant about getting close to another one so soon after his passing. After talking it over with her daughter and her husband, Doug, however, she decided to take the plunge. Here Diane describes that first meeting with Lady, now re-named Sadie, and what life has been like for them since: “Sadie’s foster mom [Paula Paye from Pender Animal Rescue] brought her to our house so that we could meet her. I know my mouth dropped open as soon as she

jumped down from the truck. We couldn’t get over how much she resembled Meeko. We had never seen one the same color, the same everything that our other dog had. I really be-lieve that they must be related somehow, perhaps

come from the same lineage. As soon as Paula saw the connection we had with Sadie, she felt comfortable enough to leave her with us for a two-week trial period. Doug fell in love with her as soon as she walked in the door. He said, ‘That’s my girl!’ I’d had Meeko for many years be-fore Doug and I married, so he was really my dog. Sadie and Doug bonded quickly and she is now definitely his girl. She loves to be with him.

She looked so much like Meeko that some members of our family had no idea that she was not our former dog. One relative was visiting and I called, ‘Come here, Sadie.’ He looked puzzled and said, ‘I thought his name was Meeko?’ She even fooled the next door neighbors. They would always come to the fence and give Meeko a treat. They could not believe that she wasn’t him. She really helped me so much through that sad time, but she defi-nitely has her own personality. Compared to her, Meeko was almost lady-like. Sadie loves to dig in the dirt and play outside. Today, she has the run of the house and a lot of toys to keep her busy. In the mornings when I leave for work, I look down at her and say, ‘Momma’s gotta go make bones!” She’s so happy when we get back home so she can go outside and play. She has a big, fenced-in back-yard and is so beautiful when she runs with her silky hair flying. At night, I give her a treat and tell her it’s time for bed. She follows me into the bed-room and settles down on the dog bed right next to ours. She snores and makes funny noises when she sleeps. She’s very cute. At Thanksgiving, we had 27 people at the house and she behaved beautifully. I was so proud of her. She’s just

a wonderful girl and has really become the queen around here. She made it easier to move on after losing Meeko and has helped fill that ‘void’ for us. She’s going to have a long, happy life loving and liv-ing with us!”

“She’s the queen of the house,” says Diane, pictured above with Sadie and Doug.

“She loves her toys and carries them around,” says Diane.

Above, Sadie shows off her stuffed toy duck.

Lady, now Sadie, enjoyed playing in the recent snowfall that blanketed the area.

Cat Tails

►Did you know black and white cats can take forever

to get adopted? And because no one messes with me, I am a little shy. If people would just give me a chance, they would see how sweet I can be. At least I have a great

name, Clare. In fact, I can become a “lap fungus”

because once I know you, I will never leave you! I am only 1-year-old and very

petite. Give me a chance to show you my loving side!

►Maybe if they named me A-Rod instead of Rodney I would get noticed? That

would have made me one of the world famous Yankees and everyone would know me. And then Cameron Diaz would feed me pop-corn! So there are two

sports cats this month (see Nolan below). I’ve been

waiting almost a year for my home. I do have one very cute habit, if you pick me up, I’ll wrap my paws around your neck and hold on. I don’t ever want to be put down! Come visit me and see for yourself!

◄Look at this wonderful belly! You know you just want to rub it. My name is Kali and I am a beautiful 6-year-old pastel Tortie. Just like Joanie, I have been waiting a long

time for my furever home. I do have one flaw, even the pretty kitties

have one flaw - I have to eat food for sensitive skin because other

food causes me to lose my fur. But it is not expensive. Not when you consider how much

love I will bring to your life. And, yes, one more flaw, I’m at little overweight. But we can work on that as well.

◄Tia was the Greek Goddess of Light and Mother of the Sun, Moon and Dawn. I guess that explains all my color. I am re-sponsible for the sun, orange, moon, black, light, white, and

dawn, orange again. So it is the perfect name for a Calico cat. It also means princess, and well,

let’s just say that I think I rule the world. In others words, I am a true Calico, with just a little attitude. I am only 11-months-old so we will have many years to bond.

▲Sophie’s choice? Well, my choice is to find a nice warm house. You see it might be a little difficult for me. You may notice in my picture that my head is tilted? Well, it is always that way. I had a high fever as a kitten and this is the result.

It doesn’t affect anything I do. In fact, I think it’s a plus. It looks like I’m really interested in what you’re saying. You

can’t get that from your boyfriend!

◄I have been wait-ing almost 4-years

for someone to realize I am special and take me home. My name is Joanie

and I love every-one. I have been at

Cat Tails since I was just 3-weeks-old! Please do feel

sorry for me, someone please! My birthday is March 20, and it would be great to spend it at my new home.

◄My name is Nolan and I’m named after Nolan Ryan, the pitcher. And since it is baseball sea-son, I’m in great shape. I don’t even need to go to spring training. I’m good for many more years, having just celebrated my first birthday. So come see me and let’s play ball!! I am already neutered and vaccinated!

Page 16: PawPrints Magazine March 2011

Hello, faithful PawPrints read-ers! We are a brother/sister

pair named Ronnie and Miley. I’m Ronnie, the boy pictured in the chair above. Miley and I

are Shepherd/Lab mixes born on November 23, 2010. Our

pregnant mom was found as a stray by a very nice family. She

gave birth to seven babies (including us) and the family found homes for five. Then they adopted our mom and

brought us to Pender County Humane Society in the hope

that we can find loving homes, too! We love to play and can

often be found romping around the room with a toy in our

mouths. We are working on leash-training and are very

happy, friendly pups. We are already spayed/neutered and vaccinated, so hurry on over and meet us! Call Pender

County Humane Society at 910-259-7022. We can be adopted together or separately.

We are sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting

Insurance Agency In honor of Luna.

Hey there, my name is Opal! I’m a blonde Cocker Spaniel mix puppy and these are my two sib-lings: Oliver, my brother, is black and Olivia, my sister, is black and white. We are just 9 to 10-weeks-old. I’m the alpha of the litter and I

love to play, especially with my chew toys! Oliver and Olivia are

as sweet as can be and love to be petted. We were rescued from a filthy house where the lady was

running a “puppy mill”. We don’t know where our mother is, but we hope she was rescued as well. We

are now in a loving foster home with small children, cats, other doggies and plenty of toys to play with. We love to have a good time together and we are also being crate-trained. Our adoption includes first and second puppy

shots, bordatella, wormings, vetting and our spay/neuter surgery. We are with Columbus Humane Society, but we’re located in Wilmington. If you’d like to meet us,

please email [email protected] or call 910-640-1505.

We are sponsored by Judy Neale in honor of Valerie

Johnston's special birthday in March and for the wonderful dogs in their lives.

◄If you are looking for a poster child of what is wrong with “backyard

breeding” then I’m your man! My name is Ruffy

(A249756) and I’m a 6-year-old Pomeranian

who’s never known what it feels like to be a cher-ished family member. I’ve only been used for monetary gain with very

little TLC. In spite of that, I am such a loveable Lap

Dog! My coat looks a little rough since I haven’t been groomed on a regu-

lar basis so I’ll be even cuter once I’m in the loving home I deserve. I’m a dainty boy who loves peanut butter treats!

Totally dig those! Hope you’ll save me soon.

►Yummy, treats! My name is Kitty Roo (A250951) and I

just finished munching down on a kitty treat. Mmm, mmm,

good! Not too long ago, I was found as a stray so I came to

Animal Control to find my original family. No such luck. Now I’m focused on finding a

new family. I have loads of personality, I’m adventure-

some and goofy, I like playing with feathered toys and I like

having my head rubbed. If you are interested in adopting

me, please call today!

►I’m Roxy (A250088) and if I look a little sad in my pic-ture, it’s because I am. I’m actually heartbroken. My

family moved and didn’t take me along. I’m a very sweet

Greyhound and Jack Russell mix who has already been

spayed. I have a gentle soul and am looking for the same in a companion. I am house-trained, I will sit next to you for attention, I like kids and cats, I’m good on a leash, I’m good in the car, and I

know how to sit, lay down, and heel on command. And according to the Animal Con-trol folks, I’m the best dog in the entire world! I’ll even give

you my paw when I need to go outside. Please come adopt me so that you can make my heart happy again.

►Would you just look at my handsome face! My

name is Maurizio (A251091) and I’m a very gorgeous, long-

haired, orange Tabby. My fur is fluffy and soft and I love to be held.

I’m not only a looker but a charmer, too! My

sweet nature will make anyone and everyone feel loved. You could

even describe me as the ideal feline companion. You better hurry up and come out to the shelter!

You don’t want to miss out on all that I have to give!

◄My name is Brownie (A249273) and I’ve been looking for a home since before Christmas. It’s really starting to get me down. I’m so worried that I’ll never find some-one to love again. I’m just 2-years-old, I’m a nice guy and I’ve al-ready been neutered. Would you come to my rescue? I will make a great companion if only given the chance.

►My name is Deena (A250901) and I’m a 1-year-old girl who is

already spayed. I’m pe-tite, gentle and sweeter than sugar. Someone

found me as a stray (I’d been hanging around for

about a week) so they brought me here to the

shelter. I’m a very loving and purry feline who en-

joys being held and rubbed. I am finding shel-

ter life rather stressful so I’m eagerly waiting to go

home with you! Would you help me out?

Our mission is to reduce the overpopulation of feral cats in New Hanover County.

Hi! My name is Cheerio because I have this cute, light

ring around one eye! I'm a Tortie with a lot of striking yellow and

orangey colors against my glossy dark coat. I also have this rather boxy body and I do

like to eat! My sister is Hobie Cat. She is long, sleek, and black with an extra long tail and a bit of white un-derneath. We were

found on the highway over two years ago

when we were about 6 weeks! Yikes! Were we ever so glad to be rescued! It was our

LUCKY day! BUT we still have to find our own, forever home! We love to CUDDLE up at night with our foster mom, and we go around in circles when it's time to eat! How cute is that? Also, we both LOVE to play just about anything, like chase the laser light, paper ball chase, run up the cat tree,

chatter at the birds in the window, or anything at all with you! Our foster mom has had us all vetted, tested, and spayed,

so don't waste time! She wants us to be inside only, and we have always been together. So, if you want a pair of sweet

sisters, please call! For info: 910-270-9892.

Hi there, my name is Zeus (CM3259) and this is my sister, Hera (CF3260)! We are friendly and playful dogs who would love

to become part of your family. Here are just a few reasons why we would make you very happy. 1. We’re affectionate dogs who love attention. Don’t be fooled

by Hera’s stern expression - she adores people just like me! 2.

We are house-trained and know how to use a doggy door. 3. We can sit and stay on command. 4. We are friendly to children and play with the young kids

who live next door to our foster home. 5. We’re perfect sizes

and will get no bigger - Hera is 46 pounds and I’m 53. 6. We’re

spayed/neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. 7. You’d be saving the life of a shelter dog! We were found as

strays by Pender County Animal Control. Our owner was reached, but she was unable to keep us. Because we’ve been friends all our lives, it would be wonderful if we could stay together. It’s not required, but it sure would be nice.

To find out more, please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. You

can also call our foster mom directly at 910-285-6212.

We are sponsored by the Keffer family: Dixie, Luke, Kira, Nikki and Charly. Thank you!

◄Do you need someone to

keep you warm on these cold winter nights? My name is

Tiger and I’d like to apply for that job! In my former home, I sat on my human’s lap

each and every night while

watching TV. She could no

longer keep me, so I’m giving remote control duties to you! I’m a 6-year-old

female who is spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Hurry, I’m missing my favorite shows!

►I’m declawed and happy living indoors - would you like to enjoy a wonderful new life

with me? I’m Felix, a 3-year-old male with long, silky-black fur. I’d be great company for

you in the house, and since I’m declawed living inside is a

must. The outside world would be too dangerous for me! I’m already neutered,

vaccinated and litterbox-trained and I get along just

fine with other cats. Come to the shelter and drink in my

beauty. I’m simply wonderful!

►Need a small sleeping partner?

How about me? I’m just 13 pounds and I promise not to steal

the covers. My name is Finney and

I’m a 1½-year-old male Chihuahua/

Manchester Terrier mix who loves to sit

in laps and sleep with my humans. I once had a family

but my owners moved away. Now I’m hoping that you will take me in. I enjoy car rides and I get along very well with other dogs. I’m already neutered and vaccinated and I’m the perfect size for living in the house. Come meet me!

◄You will find that I’m the perfect companion for your life and your home! My name is Sprockett and I’m a 1-year-old boy, just 52 pounds. That’s a nice size, not too big or small! I am already house-trained and once lived happily with children. Sadly, they lost their home and had to move away. This is where you come in! I’m friendly, loving, well-behaved and eager to meet you. Come on over!

◄As you can see, I’m meditating in the lotus position. Adopt me and I’ll be happy to show you more yoga moves! My name is Cuddles and I’m a 9-month-old neutered boy with a loving and friendly disposition. I get along with everyone - men, women, and children. I also easily make friends with other cats and dogs. And yes, I’m vaccinated and trained to use the litterbox. Adopting me isn’t something you need to meditate on - just do it!

HELP, PLEASE! We Need to Find Homes Soon!

Hi there, my name is Page and this is my best friend Coal. We’ve lived in a home together for many

years and are so sad to be searching for a new place to lay

our heads. It would be wonderful to be adopted together, but we can be adopted separately if we

each go to a loving home. I’m an 8 to 9-year-old female Shepherd

mix and I’m a 95 pound teddy bear. Coal is an 8-year-old male Lab mix with an easy smile and a loving personality. We are house-

trained, obedient and eager to please. We love going for walks, playing with children above the

age of six and we have lived har-moniously with a cat. We would be great companions for anyone. We are spayed/neutered, up to

date on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention. I do take

glucosamine for some arthritis in my hips, but I am re-sponding well. Because we’ve lived in a home all our lives, we have great house manners and are well-adjusted, so-cial, friendly dogs. Would you please consider adopting

one of us? Or perhaps both? We promise to give you so much love and so much companionship! You’ll never be

lonely again. Please call the Sunburst Foundation at 910-622-0011 or email [email protected] for

more information. Hope to meet you soon!

◄I’ve Been At The Shelter for Five Years! My name is Kohl and I’m a very handsome 6-year-old Pointer/Lab mix who is sweet and loving as can be. I just don’t understand why I haven’t yet been adopted? I love being with humans and would be an excellent companion. I’m house-trained, neutered, up to date on shots and on heartworm prevention. I love going for walks and am gentle at 60 pounds. Please visit me soon!

◄I’m a beautiful female Spaniel mix named

Sparkles and I’d love to be part of your family. At just

45 to 50 pounds, I’m a perfect size, not too big or small. Just right, I’d say! I am already house-trained and I play well with other dogs as long as they’re submissive types. I’d

probably be happiest as the only dog in the household. At just 4-years-old, I am

spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. In

my photo I am all dressed up to attend a recent adoption

fair. I behaved beautifully. Won’t you come meet me?

◄Whew, playing with this tennis

ball wore me out! I think it’s time for a nice nap, but let me tell

you about myself first. My name is Skittles and I’m a 35 pound

Hound girl who is not quite a year.

I will turn 1-year-old at the end of March and I hope to celebrate my birthday with my new family! I am a house-

trained darling who lost my home because a new baby was coming and there was no time for me. I’m good with cats and other canines, but would probably be happiest as the only dog since I can be protective of my food. Let’s meet!

►I’m a sweet, handsome, 60-pound

Hound in need of a new family! I’m Beau and I was part of a litter of

twelve puppies that was adopted out four years ago. Sadly, my owner

became very ill and could no longer keep

me. The good news is that I have perfect house

manners and am well behaved! I walk nicely on a leash, am house-

trained, can sit for a cookie, and I get along

well with other dogs and human children. I am even used to sleeping in bed with my family, if it’s allowed. Please give me a loving home!

►My name is Holly and I was found by

the railroad tracks on Christmas Eve. I’m

a 19-month-old Hound with one blue eye and one brown. I’m so pretty! Right

now I weigh 45 pounds, but I could stand to gain an-

other ten. I’m great with other dogs and love to play. I enjoy rawhides, going for walks and getting hugged and kissed by humans. I have a gentle personality and am already spayed, vaccinated and

on heartworm prevention. Come meet me!

►My name is Wheelie and I’m a very happy,

intelligent and loveable Hound boy who is friendly to every person and every dog I’ve ever met. I am 3-years-old, neutered, vacci-nated and on heartworm prevention. I’d love to be adopted by folks who will

treat me like the wonderful fellow I am - I’d like to be-lieve they will kiss me, hug me and show me what it feels like to be loved. Do you think you’re that per-son or family? If so, please hop in the car and come meet

me. We can take a walk together and get acquainted!

Hi, I’m Annabelle. I am a gorgeous

Shepherd mix who is 6-years-young and

spayed. I am a big girl (100 pounds) with lots of love to give! I have many

exceptional qualities. I am a great watchdog

with a deep bark who’s protective of my family’s territory. I walk well on a

leash and have been obedience-trained. I am invisible fence trained, too! I would love to live inside again and

you’ll be pleased to know, I'm 100% house-trained! I enjoy hiking in the woods, barking at and chasing squirrels and lounging on the porch. You could say I like country-style living. My requirements are simple! I need a fenced yard or invisible fence, a strong pack leader, and a home where

there are NO other dogs or cats. Because of my extra-large size, I would do best with older children, too. I de-

serve another chance to find a great home, could it be with you? If you are interested in adopting me, call Amy today at 910-253-0501 to arrange a visit. Hope to see you soon!

Disappeared from Long Creek area (across street from Long Creek School) in Pender County

Mango is greatly loved and desperately missed!

He is the only family left to an 80-year-old Wilmington woman. He was under the temporary care of a friend when he disappeared on December 22, 2010. Mango is a miniature white poodle, about 7 pounds. He is a house dog and a lap dog. He loves his home

and his human momma and is shy around strangers. Please help reunite him with his mother! She is deeply grieving his loss.

A reward will be paid and no questions asked for his safe return. Please indicate a time and place to pick him up.

If you have any info about 'Mango', please call 910-791-4239.

Hello! I’m Lucy (SRC #962), a 3-year-old merle Schnoodle (a

Schnauzer and Poodle mix) who has come to Schnauzer Rescue of

the Carolinas (SRC) as an owner turn-in. I came with my brother because

our owner could no longer provide for us and

knew that SRC would make certain that we

would get loving, perma-nent homes. I am a very

sweet and playful little girl! Because I love to play, I really need another dog in my new family. I’m friendly to cats, too! As for humans, I am immediately loving and friendly toward women, but I’m not so sure about men. My friends at SRC wonder if at some point in my short life I might have been abused by a man.

Still, I will eventually warm up to the men I meet, it just takes more time. I am heartworm negative, spayed, up to date on all my vaccinations, and microchipped. If you are

interested in me and would like to find out more, go to www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues.

If you need an application mailed or faxed, please call 910-264-8300 to have an application sent.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance

Agency in honor of Molly.

My name is Herman and I’m a very sweet

and loving Hound dog. I’m calm and laid-back but I do enjoy daily walks.

The Hound in me just loves all the different smells to be found in this great big world. I am approximately 3-

years-old, I’ve already been neutered, I’m

current on all vaccina-tions and I tested negative for heart-worms! I’m really

good with other dogs and I mean really

good. I have the best time playing with them. I’m also good with cats but my new home would ideally have an-other pooch for me to love. I’m good on a leash, I’m qui-eter than most other Hounds and I would love for my new home to have a fenced yard that I can go out and play in.

If you could help me out by opening up your heart and home to me, I’ll promise to give all my unconditional love to you! For more information or to adopt me, please call

Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910-383-2100 (Monday through Saturday between 8am-6pm).

I am sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has

rescued a homeless animal.

Hi! I’m a declawed girl named Daphne. At 8-years-old, I’m an orange Tabby looking for a good home. My current

owner has health issues and is unable to take care of me any longer. I’m a very sweet and loving girl who gets along

just fine with other cats and dogs. I’m very happy living inside with my family (and since I’m declawed, living inside is a must.) I love to be close to my humans and would also be a great companion for children. As for my health, I am already spayed, vaccinated, litterbox-trained and micro-

chipped. I’m just a wonderful girl! If you would like to take me home with you, please call 910-233-1427.

My name is Gracie and I'm a sweet girl who

was found as a stray. Anyone

who thinks

that cats aren't social

has NOT met me. I can't get enough of my humans. I wait for my foster mom to get home each day so we can play. I get along with other cats and dogs, too. I'm up to date on my vaccinations, I’m spayed and at 8 months of age, I only weigh 6 pounds. I think I'll always be a petite girl. My meow is kind of squeaky, but I make up for that with my awesome purring. Let's get together and have

some fun! Please give Pet Friends of Duplin County a call at 910-271-3101 for more information.

I am sponsored by Pet Friends of Duplin County.

Thank you!

◄I’m a gorgeous Tabby girl with distinctive Bullseye markings that make everyone say, “Wow, she’s beautiful!” My name is Tiffany (FF3120) and I came to the shelter on January 7 of this year. I had wandered up to a stranger’s house and he fed me for a few days while looking for my owner. No one claimed me, so you’re in luck! I enjoy being held and am very affectionate. Please take me home where I belong!

We are renovating, but we are STILL OPEN!

Come Adopt Someone Today!

◄I get so happy when people come visit me. As you can see

from my photo, I

never meet a stranger! My name is

Hershey (CF3309) and I’m a spayed

female Chocolate Lab mix. I weigh in at about 33 pounds. I’m heartworm positive, but it’s very weak, so I’m taking

Ivermectin once a month as treatment. I am a very active, playful gal who loves attention. Obedience classes would be fun and help me bond with my new family. Please call

the shelter today and let’s arrange a get-together!

◄Hey there! My name is Glacier (CM3410). I’m a pure-white, male German Shepherd who was found as a stray, running loose in Hampstead. Wonder how a great boy like me came to be all alone? I walk well on a leash and know how to sit on command. Because I’m a big dog, I’d be best in a home with no small children. I’d also prefer to be the only animal. Let’s get together soon!

►URGENT, URGENT! I’M RUNNING OUT OF TIME! I’m the cat of your

dreams so why am I still at Animal Control! My name

is Bingo (FM2643) and I’m a big ol’ lay-around

baby. If a cuddle partner, lap cat or TV-watching pal

is what you’re after, I’m your guy. There’s not a mean bone in my body - all I want is to be loved.

I’ve been here since September, so please

hurry over today!

◄Looking for a darling baby to pamper and

kiss? How about me? Hi there, my name is Missy Ann (CF3404)

and I’m quite bewildered by my new surroundings.

I wish I was part of a family where I could be loved forever. They tell me I’m a very sweet and friendly female Beagle/Terrier mix. If you’d like

to get to know me, I invite you to call the shelter today. They can tell you even more about me on the phone!

►See how I’m flopped over in my photo, just

begging you with my eyes to touch me? This is what I do when someone opens my

cage door - I don’t try to

jump out, my main objective is to be rubbed! Affectionate, friendly cats like me are highly prized, so why am I at Animal Control? My name is Tabitha (FF3024) and I’m a 1-year-old girl

who was found as a stray. I’d be such a friendly companion to anyone, from adults to children. Won’t

you please come meet me? I’m purring at the thought!

It’s puppy time! Have you been hoping to share your life with a sweetie-pie like

me? Well, I’m up for adoption, so

sit back and listen to how wonderful I am! My name is Pepper Ann and I’m a 12-week-old

Hound mix girl who was found as

a stray on Oak Island. I’m cur-rently in a foster home that consists of dogs ranging from Chihuahuas to Border Collies, so I think it’s safe to say I

get along great with all dogs from small to big! I weigh just 10 pounds right now and am already spayed and vacci-nated. I love going for rides in the car, love to play with

toys and am crate-trained. I’m also happy, affectionate and I LOVE people! If you think you’re the one for me, call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297 and let’s get together!

I am sponsored by Hank and Grace Harrington.

Thank you!

Are you a Dachshund lover? My name is Lucy and I’m an 8-year-old Dachshund who was found run-

ning loose in Burgaw. I’m a true sweetheart who loves to get at-

tention from humans. I am very happy to be held and am definitely a lap dog. I am also house-trained and leash-trained and

enjoy going for walks. I’d be a great com-panion for an adult-only household, or even one with kids.

My health is great, too - I’m spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Do you think you could find room in

your heart for a sweet little girl like me? I’m so ready to settle down with a loving family forever! Please call

Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and tell them you can’t wait to meet me.

I am sponsored in honor of Schotzi - the Miracle Dog.

◄Don’t you want to reach down into this photo and pick me up? My name is Cuddles and I’m a baby kitten, just 8-weeks-old. I was once running out of time at Animal Control, but the nice folks here took me in. I’m a little boy who is enjoying getting to know all the other kittens at the shelter. I hop, skip and jump around the room after toys, then I settle into a volunteer’s arms for some cuddling. Adopt me and let’s cuddle together!

►Hello! My name is Jessica and I’m a darling Corgi mix girl. I’m new at

the shelter and getting used to my surroundings,

plus I miss my brother terribly. He was recently adopted. I would love to

go to a home that has another dog, because I

love my fellow canines! I enjoy being held and am spayed, vaccinated and house-trained. They tell

me I’m just 1½-years-old, so I’ve got a lot of years

ahead to make wonderful memories with you!

►Everyone was saying how precious I am, so that’s what

they decided to name me: Precious! I’m a

playful and sweet Calico kitten girl who once lived at Animal

Control with my brother, Cuddles.

He’s pictured at the top of this page. We were running out of

time (hard to believe, huh?) so the folks at Pender County Humane Society took us in. I’m an 8-week-old beauty who would love to meet you soon!

▲►I need TWO photos: one to show you that I’m a Manx (which means I was born without a tail) and one to show you my hand-

some face! My name is Jupiter and I’m an 8-week-old boy kitten who would love to be yours! I’m a happy, friendly and

playful fellow who loves to be held and kissed. Don’t you think I’m adorable? Come meet me and fall instantly in love!

◄Raise your hand if you’re a Dachshund

lover! I hope there are lots of hands raised because I’m a boy

Dachshund in need of a home. You see, my

owner had a stroke and now I’m searching for

a new family. I’m Peanut, just 4-years-

old and dapple in color. I get along very well

with other dogs and am used to living inside

with my folks. I would be a great family com-panion, for adults or

children. Don’t miss the opportunity to adopt me! ►They’ve called me

Cutie Pie and it sure is easy to see why. I’m a 1-year-old-old grey and

white Tabby boy who was found living alone under someone’s porch. Now

I’m at the shelter, making pals with the other kitties, and waiting for my forever family. I love to be petted and held, but I can be a bit timid at first. Don’t

worry about that, though, just start rubbing me and I’ll quickly melt into a very

purry fellow. I’m also neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Come see me!

◄My name is Libby but you might want to call me ‘Libby

the Lovebug’. I bet you can

guess why, but I’ll tell you any-way: I’m a very sweet and affec-tionate girl who

is simply grateful for the touch of a

kind hand and any loving

words. I was found as an un-derweight stray with my canine

buddy, Gus. He’s a Hound

and is also at the shelter looking for a loving home. I’ve reached a healthy

weight in the months that I’ve been here and have made a very positive impression on everyone with my mellow, gentle personality. I rarely even bark and recently enjoyed a walk on the beach with SOAR’s manager. I’m under 2-years-old and would love to be part of a family. Won’t you come meet

me? I am already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention.

◄Hi there! My name is Tommy and I’m the black and white boy kitty pictured at the top. Next to me is my mother, Molly, and below us is my sister, Katie. We were found as strays by a very nice man who took us to the vet’s office and got us spayed/neutered and up to date on shots. He couldn’t keep us, but he put us on the right track! Now we’re at SOAR hoping to find new families. We’re a little shy but we’re warming up quickly. We hope to be meeting you soon!

◄Hello, friends! I’m Noel, a friendly and loveable girl, just 10-months-old. I was found by a young couple who live in an apartment complex where pets are not allowed. The couple made sure I was well fed and tried for months to find a place to take me. They brought me down from Jacksonville to SOAR and I’m so grateful to them! I am spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Come fall in love with me at the shelter.

◄I’m George! I was found abandoned in

a parked car and was born probably

the last week in Sep-tember 2010. In my SOAR foster home, I

have been raised with other cats and kittens and a large dog. My sweet na-

ture and playfulness have made me much loved. I am negative for all feline diseases, have had all my shots and

am neutered. Some cat lover who needs a great kitten should call my SOAR foster mom at 910-278-4437 quickly!

◄▲We’re Sandy and Surfer, a sister/brother pair looking for

loving homes! Do you need a couple of beach bums (or maybe

just one) to cuddle and kiss? Catch some waves with us! At 6-months-old, we’re a Calico and an orange Tabby

who were found as strays on Caswell Beach. Now we’re looking for homes where we can watch television shows about surfing. We heard Hawaii Five-O features some gnarly waves, dude! We are already spayed/neutered,

vaccinated, litterbox-trained and extremely loving!

a 2½ to 3-year-old Hound mix, weighing in at approximately 53 pounds, and I

love to snuggle! If you get too close, you may find me

found in a residential area and was very thin. I also had a

broken leg and other medical needs. My compassionate res-

cuers took care of me and now I’m in excellent health and my leg is healed! I’m heartworm negative, crate-trained and neutered. I love to go on walks and play with other

animals. You’ll find I’m a very loyal, playful and affection-ate boy who bonds instantly with those who show me

affection. I’m looking for a loving, permanent home where I will be part of a family. If you think you’re the one for

Hello! My name is Gracie and, at 10-years-old, I’m hoping to find a special

person or family who will bring me back home where I belong. I was once part of a loving family, but then a day came when every-thing changed. My owner became ill and could no longer keep me. There

was no one else to take me in and I was brought to

Southport Oak Island Ani-mal Rescue (SOAR). It’s

quite a change to go from a comfy home with familiar sights and sounds to the strange surroundings of an animal shelter. I’m an affectionate Tabby girl who enjoys receiving

attention - I like to be held and will happily snuggle up in your arms. I’m also spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. There’s no doubt that I would make someone very happy with my purring, pleasing personality. If you’d like to meet

me, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340. They can give you very easy directions and I’ll be so happy to greet you!

children and am friendly to adult humans as well! I do

have issues with some dogs, but I’m great with cats. I’ve been working with an obedi-ence trainer and would love to continue this training with

my new family. I’m also spayed, vaccinated and on

◄Hello! I’m Lola and I’m a very sweet and loving girl. I’m a 3-year-old Shepherd

mix and all I want is to please and be loved. I do have an old cruciate liga-ment injury which requires me to stay on glucosamine chondroiton for my lifetime. I interact very well with lar-ger, docile male dogs, and it would be helpful if I were hand walked on a regular

basis to strengthen my muscles. I’m behaving

beautifully at a dog boarding facility and hope to soon find a forever family. Let’s arrange a visit, okay?

family be reading this? I am a Retriever/Chow mix who is

very humble and loves people. I am friendly but reserved around other

dogs. I will chase a cat. I am also house-trained,

crate-trained and a wonderful, funny guy. I am learning my basic

commands. When I come in the house for my treat, I will

sit and my eyes get real big like I am opening my mouth. I want to please and am as gentle and sweet as they come. Would you please consider bringing me home with you?

Shelter News & Events

Help Bring the Dogs at Pender County Animal Control INSIDE Pender County Animal Control is looking for a metal building, 40 feet by 65 feet or larger, to house homeless dogs that arrive at its animal shelter. Currently, many dogs are housed in 40 kennels outside, which leave them vulner-able to cold and hot temperatures. The new building would also contain at least 40 kennels, each one measuring 4 feet by 6 feet. If you can donate a building, provide building materials, or help in any way whatsoever, please call Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196.

Adopt-An-ANGEL 2011 Spay A Stray Last year, thousands of cats and kittens were euthanized in Pender, Brunswick, and New Hanover Counties because they could not find a home. There are just too many of them. In 2007-2009, Adopt-An-ANGEL (AAA) distrib-uted vouchers to help people spay their female cats. In 2010, AAA was unable to do this program because of lim-ited funds and were slammed with kittens all year long as a result. Now, AAA has set aside $3,000 to spay as many female cats possible - that's 50 cats to start with - prevent-ing the birth of 200 to 300 kittens. Since an additional $1,500 in donations has come into the program, an addi-tional 25 vouchers can be put out preventing the birth of another 100-150 kittens.. Here's how it works: If you live in New Hanover, Pen-der or Brunswick County and have a female cat who needs to be fixed, pick up a voucher at Pet Supermarket on Ole-ander Drive, make your appointment at Cape Fear Spay/Neuter Clinic and get her fixed along with a rabies shot...FREE! AAA has kicked in the first $3,000. Could you pitch in some for an even greater impact? AAA is accepting donations to the program to keep it funded. For every $60 that comes in earmarked, Spay A Stray, AAA will put out another voucher. To donate, please send tax-deductible donations to Adopt-An-ANGEL, P.O. Box 15095, Wilmington, NC 28408 or go online to donate at www.adoptanangel.net and put Spay A Stray in the com-ment line. Let's stop flooding an already overcrowded shelter system with hundreds of unwanted kittens this spring. Let's get smart about this and prevent their births in the first place.

Attend Playful Paws Puppy Preschool Too many dogs are surrendered to shelters because of behavior problems that are easily prevented when the dog is a puppy. She is the founder and primary trainer of the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program. Classes will be held the second Saturday of every month at Needham Animal Hospital. Adopt-an-ANGEL Helps Pender Animal Control Dogs in Foster Care In late January, when the shelter director from Pender County Animal Control (PCAC) needed to get 50 to 60 dogs out of the shelter due to a failing septic system, she asked the community and the rescue groups for help. About 20 of these dogs went into foster care with individ-ual Good Samaritans who opened their homes. Since Adopt-An-ANGEL (AAA) is a foster home network, the shelter director sought their expertise in setting up a fund to help provide veterinary care and to begin the search for the dogs’ permanent placement while still in foster care. AAA immediately began vaccinating the dogs and sched-uling spay/neuter surgeries and heartworm test appointments. A handful have tested positive for heartworms and are scheduled to be treated. As of February 15, AAA has provided the needed veterinary care for virtually all of these foster dogs and has invited them to their adoption fairs each weekend. AAA then began as-sessing the viability of these fos-ter homes. If any of these dogs remain homeless after the 6 to 8-weeks needed for shelter repairs and the foster home is no longer able to keep them, AAA is hoping to absorb them into their system. The reasoning behind all of this is to ensure that NONE of these 20 foster dogs will have to return to the shelter in 6 weeks. So far, 6 of these foster dogs have found their forever homes at Adopt-an-ANGEL's week-end adoption fairs. To follow the progress of this PCAC/AAA collaborative effort or to help contribute to these dogs' vet expenses, visit www.adoptanangel.net.

Save lives…please spay or neuter your pets!

40 www.PawPrintsMagazine.com March 2011

Hello, my name is Cassandra, and I am

a rough-coat Saint Bernard looking for a home. I love to pose with my paws crossed because it makes peo-

ple smile, and then they come to pet me

and tell me how pretty I am. I have been living with a foster

family for four months, enjoying good food and sleeping on soft dog beds as I went through heartworm

treatment. I am now happy and healthy and strong and ready for a family of my own. I am playful and affectionate, and love to play with other dogs, especially puppies. I like to be petted and will roll over for a belly rub anytime, especially for kids! If you would like to bring me home, please email

[email protected] or call 910-547-4823.

Sponsored by Aunt Kerry’s Pet Stop in loving memory of Molly Merritt. We will miss you.

Hello! My name is Gracie, and I am looking for a fam-ily to love. For eight years I lived with a great family, but

when their house burned down I was stuck living outside. Saint Bernards

are really into being close to their people, and just

hanging out in good com-pany, so I was scared and lonely. Could I come live with you? I am healthy,

house-trained and love to cuddle. Although I am

a "senior" dog at 9-years-old, I am playful and energetic - for a Saint Bernard. I like to

go for walks, and with my Gentle Leader collar I am very well-behaved on a leash. I like to play with squeaky toys and take naps on your feet. At 90 pounds I am small for a Saint Bernard, but I have a big heart and want to share it with you.

If you are interested in taking me home, please email [email protected] or call 910-547-4823.

I am sponsored by WhatsOnWilmington.com in honor of

Kizzy Totten, the elder stateswoman of rescued Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Thank you!

►I was abandoned as a baby kitten, so my

wonderful foster mom held me in her arms and gave me formula from a baby bottle.

Being held like that has made me extra sweet

and friendly toward humans. I’m quite

accustomed to being kissed and cuddled! My name is Stanley

and I’m a 9-month-old boy who is neutered,

vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I’m great with other cats and I’d love

to be your best friend!

►The power of prayer works! You see, I

was at a local church praying for someone to help me. Next thing I know, I’ve

been scooped up and carried to safety. Now all I need is a family! My name

is Princeton and I’m a 10-month-old male kitten.

I’m a loving boy who is happy to be held and kissed.

In fact, they call me a certified “people cat” and an “absolute doll”. You can rub

my belly and flop me around. Affection will be yours!

►A kind lady found me as a stray in her

neighborhood. Someone had left me

on the street! My name is Hershel and I’m a

9-month-old kitten with sleek, soft, ebony-

colored fur. I’m a very sweet boy who would be perfect for anyone. You see, I get along well with other cats but I also am fine on my own. I like to be held, but I don’t mind being at home while you go to work. I’m loving, but not clingy. I’d be

such a wonderful addition to your household. Come visit!

►My name is Jack and I’m not a wiggle worm. No

sir, when you hold me in your arms, I don’t try to get down. I stay put and make

biscuits with my paws. Some cats don’t like to be

held, but not me! I’m a 10-month-old boy who was

found in a cardboard box on a hot day. I was so very

tiny at the time. I was bottlefed by my foster mom,

so I’m very comfortable being with humans. Come

over and meet me today!

◄▲We two brothers - Stark and Eric - were found all by ourselves

on a neighborhood street. I’m Stark, the Tabby on the left with the white chest. Eric has a glossy black coat. We

are just 10-months-old and have friendly, affectionate per-sonalities. We’re already neutered, vaccinated and litter-

box-trained. You can adopt us separately or together!

◄I’m a 2-year-old girl named Bingo and I’d love to be part of your family! I’m a very sweet and friendly feline who gets along well with other kitties. I am already spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and great in the litterbox. I’m a quiet girl who just wants a nice, cozy life with people who adore me. Oh, and if you have a peacock feather or a few toys for me to play with, that would be great, too. Swing by today!

DOOK-N-DANCE FERRET SHELTER

My name is Gypsy Rose Lee and I came to the shelter after my owners left me with neighbors and never re-claimed me. The people I was left

with were going to put me outside on a day when it was 25 degrees! I was eating hot dogs and cheap cat food. I

am about 9-years old and have hair on my face and front legs only. I am also blind. I recently got my first melatonin implant. Even with all of my issues, I still play like a kid and have loads of energy. To adopt me, call 910-548-2831 or

email [email protected]. You can view other ferrets at www.petfinder.com/shelters/NC189.html.

Are you upside-down or am I? Hee, hee, don’t worry, I am sim-ply a happy kitty turning somer-

saults for attention. A hand-some guy like me can’t get too

much lovin’. They call me Curly and wait until you see my striking black and white mark-ings. Let’s see, affectionate,

handsome...and let’s not forget already neutered, up to date on vaccinations and used to being around friendly dogs.

What more could you possibly want in a companion? Please call my foster mum, Edna, at 910-866-4289 to learn

how we can meet. You can also visit A Shelter Friend online at www.AShelterFriend.org and on Facebook at

A SHELTER FRIEND OF SE NORTH CAROLINA

PHOENIX LANDING FOUNDATION

Hi, my name is Charlie. I am a mature (mid-thirties) male Blue and Gold Macaw and I am told that I have great manners. I am vocal in the morning but

rarely scream; I am generally a very quiet bird. My favorite spot is a tree perch on the screened-

in porch; I love to watch the squirrels and other birds out-

side. I am used to getting regu-lar showers and really enjoy them. I will step up onto a

perch or hand but really prefer not to be handled much. My favorite foods are chopped raw veggies, fruits, eggs, grains and some pelleted food. I am looking for that perfect per-son who will care for me and treat me with the dignity and respect to which I am accustomed. To adopt me or to fos-ter or adopt another of the many parrots of all species that are awaiting homes, contact us at www.phoenixlanding.org (click on the link for adoption/foster), call 866-749-5634 or

email us at [email protected].

OPERATION TOPCAT

Late one night, my foster mom was trapping a sweet group of recently orphaned kittens off the island in Surf City. Thankfully, her friend

looked around with a flashlight and saw a pair of eyes looking back: Mine! With a brief "kitty kitty" I came running over and nearly

jumped in her lap because I didn't want to be left behind. A very nice lady offered to take care of all my vet bills and the kittens, too. I had a great vet who fixed a deep ulcer in my left eye with two surgeries...it looks almost like new. On top of that, the spay saved my life because I was full of infection that is

common to unspayed females. I love to spend time just sitting on your lap. If you want a precious little bundle of

"Half Moon-Pie" lap time love, I am looking for you! Please email [email protected] or call 910-270-9892 to find out more about me. To meet some of the other kitties

here, visit www.petfinder.com/shelters/NC250.html.

ONSLOW PARTNERS FOR ANIMAL WELFARE

Our names are Little Girl and Little Boy and we are such won-derful, friendly, loving pups! We are healthy, spayed or neutered and current on shots. We are both Irish and would love to be adopted together. We are both desperate to find a home, so we will leave our fate to the Irish Fair-ies. Please call Joe and Helen at 910-545-1846 for a time to visit. For more information and to see more pictures, visit the OC-PAW website at www.oc-paw.com.

PET FRIENDS OF DUPLIN COUNTY

My name is Princess and it is believed that I was a breeder dog at a puppy mill. I’m a precious red

Miniature Pinscher who is about 4 to 5-years-old. I

am up to date on my shots, spayed and tested negative for heartworms. I’m a real sweetheart. When I was first rescued, I wanted nothing

more than to curl up in a chair. I am learning what it's like to be a cherished pet. I get along well with other dogs and will now go for a walk with my foster family. I would be an ideal pet for a quiet family or an apartment dweller. If you

can give a sweet girl like me a second chance and the love I deserve, please call 910-271-3101.

COLUMBUS HUMANE SOCIETY

My name is Tuffy. Even though I don’t see well, I don’t bump into things and can find the door to

go outside and go potty (and if I have to, I can use pee pee

pads). I know I only have three legs, but I still love to take short

walks and can get along just fine. My foster mom has 4 dogs and 4 cats who I get along fine with. I love to go for car rides and go to the groomer. I just got a new haircut and I really look great. Please call if you want a really nice companion because I love to snuggle.

I’ve already been neutered and am fully vaccinated but I do need daily eye drops because of dryness. I need a little more TLC than others but I am well worth it. If you think you might be interested in adopting me or learning more about me, please email Deb at [email protected] or call

Columbus Humane Society at 910-640-1505.

PENDER ENDANGERED ANIMAL RESCUE

I’m Valentine, and I am looking for a furever home. I am a very

loving Staffordshire and I am reaching out for help. I was

attacked and suffered severe damage to my front paw. The vet repaired most of the dam-

age and I am doing great; how-ever, I will have a limp. I didn't deserve this and if you met me you'd see how loving I am. PEAR is trying to pay the

vet bills, but they are growing. We need help from the pub-lic and every little bit counts. To donate to the Valentine

Fund, send your tax-deductible contribution to: Pender En-dangered Animal Rescue (attn: Valentine), P.O. Box 582, Rocky Point, NC 28457. Please get up with me at PEAR,

910-675-0867.

Hello everybody, I am the one and only Bob Dylan, but my fans just call me Dylan for short. I am a

1-year-old Labrador Retriever with a free spirit and a soft spot for the ladies. Most of the time I like to

rock and roll but on occasion I have been known to lay back and chill. I am a medium sized, strongly built dog who is compact and well bal-

anced. I love to fetch and play with toys and I am a great family dog. Monty’s Home and Pen-

der Correctional Institute have teamed up to teach me basic obedience skills. My trainer is quite the groovy

dude! To adopt me, visit www.montyshome.org, email [email protected] or call 910-262-3055.

Hi, my name is Miss Dovey. I am a white cat with soft fur. I

am a little over a year-old. I had been thrown out near a conven-ience store and was struggling to survive day to day. I was scared, hungry, and thirsty. It took awhile but I finally trusted a nice CAPS

lady enough to go home with her. She took me to a foster home and my foster mom says I have come a long way. I am very shy because not everyone is nice to us strays. I am learning to play and relax around people. I love to be petted and get along well with other cats. I would love a

forever home with a family of my own. I really would love a family who would be patient with me and understand that I

need a little time to adjust to a new situation and new people. I have a lot of love in my heart but I'm still a little scared to show it. Would you give me a chance? Please email [email protected] or call 910-330-1376.

I’m Lucy, and I’m looking for a man! Bunny man is okay, but human man is essential. My foster parents finally

figured out that I am very partial to men. I can tolerate women once

they prove themselves trustworthy to me, but males – I just love em! If

you’re a guy who loves rabbits, I will fawn all over you, love you, lay by your feet, make you laugh and beg

for attention. There’s nothing I won’t do to please you. So if you’re a guy, thinking you might like a big beautiful bunny for companionship, I’m your gal! I’m

spayed, litterbox-trained and weigh 8 pounds. Please contact Cape Fear House Rabbit Society by calling

910-471-7854 or emailing [email protected] to adopt us! You can also visit www.capefearrabbits.org

CAPE FEAR RESCUE RANGERS

Hello there, my name is Baby and I am a petite, purebred

Persian. I am solid black and have lovely golden eyes. I am an

older lady, 10-years-old, and would love to have someone dote on me, rub and brush me. I love attention and get along with other cats. I have been kept current on

my vet visits, I am spayed and also front declawed so you don’t have to worry about me scratching your furniture. If you think you would like for me to be your lap companion, please email [email protected] or call 910-259-3502.

I’m a gorgeous, long-haired boy named Ragdoll! And just like a ragdoll, I enjoy being held and cuddled. I’m only 2-years-old and was recently rescued from a home where there were too many

cats. I heard someone say it was a ‘hoarding’ situation. I was treated well, though, because

I’m very gentle, friendly and laid-back. I get

along just fine with hu-man children, dogs and other cats. My friends at Cat Adoption Team made sure I was neutered and vaccinated and, of course,

I’m litterbox-trained. If you’d like to see how handsome and sweet I am, come to Petsmart in Wilmington - we’re there 7 days a week! You can also call Cat Adoption Team at 910-

792-9014 for more information on adopting me.

I am sponsored by Sharon Harmon in honor of Pine Valley Animal Hospital. Thank you!

I’m a precious puppy named Rudi! Rudi is

short for Rudolph because I was

found in the woods on Christ-mas Eve. I’m 10 to 12-weeks-old and they tell me I’m a wire-haired

boy, probably mixed with some

sort of Terrier. I’m in a foster

home currently and I get along great with the other dogs there. My foster family takes me to work with them, so I’m very well social-

ized and happy to meet new people. I’m intelligent, ex-tremely adorable, and I can sit and give you my paw on command. I’m 10 pounds now, but they think I’ll be just 30 to 35 pounds when fully grown. Oh yes, I’m already neutered and vaccinated. Call Paw’s Place at 910-845-

MID-ATLANTIC GREAT DANE RESCUE LEAGUE

My name is Hunter and I'm a 1-year-old merle boy. I was found by the side of the road and taken

to an emergency hospital by a good Samaritan. Once stabilized, they transferred me to the local

shelter. I was very skinny and had suffered severe fractures to my

front and rear left legs. MAGDRL was called in and transported me

to a veterinary surgeon where they were able to repair my extensive injuries with multiple

surgeries. I spent nearly a week in the hospital, all the while giving kisses and tail wags. I am now 6-weeks into

recovery and thriving! I am also house-trained and love my brother and sister Danes in my foster home. My foster

mom tells me I am one special boy. For more info, contact the NC Chapter Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League by

calling Terri at 252-566-8934 or visiting www.magdrl.org.

Look at my precious face! There are 4 more who look like me seeking a

forever home, too! I’m Redmon. My siblings and I were born November 8, 2010, in the bitter cold. I am mixed with either Terrier, Shepherd and

mini–Schnauzer so I will probably be a medium size adult. At 10-weeks old, I weighed 12 pounds. I’m a

sweet little puppy with a very easy disposition! I am calm, not hyper, already paper-trained and using the doggie door. I am by no means an alpha

dog. My siblings and I are laid back and would be perfect companions in almost any environment with the exception of young children. If you are interested in me or the other puppies, visit www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org.

There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues. If you need an application mailed or

Spring is almost here and I'm wondering if I will ever get a

forever home? Oreo here yet again. I'm a 3 to 4-year-old

Golden mix who is house-trained, good with most indoor cats, and great with other dogs. I love car rides and would cuddle with you

in a heartbeat (despite my size of 75+ pounds), if you would let me. I'll even share your bed if invited!

I enjoy the outdoors and people say I am very smart and catch on really quick! I'm neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all my shots. Won't you give me a chance to have a forever home just in time for Spring? If you are

interested in giving me a chance, call 910-791-5001or visit www.cfgoldenrescue.com. I'm still waiting!

CAROLINA BORDER COLLIE RESCUE

My name is Early and I’m a 1-year-old puppy. I am

fostered with 5 other Border Collies and we spend our days playing

and sleeping in the sun. I love to play with toys,

enjoy chasing balls, really like treats. Each day we work on my house-training skills and I am getting better

every day. I am looking for a home where I can get a lot of attention and exercise. I like children as long as they are

not too young. If you are interested in me, please visit CBCR.org or call 919-682-6125, for more info about me

and other dogs available for adoption.

My name is Abbey Mae. I found myself in rescue be-

cause my dad passed away and my mom is unable to care for a dog by herself. I am 8-years-old and sweet as can be. I love to please and just hang out with my family, I get along great with other dogs, but I do enjoy chasing cats. I am fully vetted and ready to go to my next family, whether it be a foster family or adoptive family. I have lots of love

to give and I love to be with my people! I’m still playful and have a zest for life! Please consider fostering or adopting me. For more info, visit www.blueridgeboxerrescue.com

Sugar and spice and every-thing nice? My foster mom says that is what I’m made of! She says that I have fine southern manners. I was found out on my own,

tangled up in wire after hav-ing my last batch of pups. It sure felt good to get some

peaceful sleep after my recent journey. I still have another one to go, as I do need heartworm treatment. I can get past that though. I get along great with my three foster

brothers and like to snuggle with the cat. I am very gentle and love to be around people. If you are looking for a little extra sugar in your life, contact the folks at CBHR and ask for Chessie! To make me a member of your family, call

Well, I’m your girl! I’m a Lab mix, just 1-year-old. I love playing with toys

such as tennis balls and stuffed animals and I have a friendly, social personality. I adore

people and want to be around them all the

time. Since I’m active, an adult-only home or

one with kids age ten or older would be perfect.

As for my health, I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Oh yes, I’m good with other dogs

and walk well on a leash. Come spend some time with me! SOAR can be reached at 910-457-6340. They’ll be happy to

tell you how we can get together!

I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

I’ve been told I’m an extra-adorable kitten! So why

don’t I have a home? My name is Ben and I was found in a vacant lot in

Southport. For a while I lived in a foster home and I loved playing with the other kitties there. I have a sub-missive, friendly nature and

was looking for a buddy. Now I’m at SOAR and I’m stealing the hearts of all I meet. I love to play with toys, but I will also flop in

your arms and am content to be held. At 9-months-old, I’m a small boy who is already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I love getting attention and am an all-

around super companion. If your current cat is lonely, I’d be a great addition. I’d also be a lifelong friend to you and your children. Please call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and tell them you’d like to make my acquaintance. You

can bet I’ll be happy to meet you, too!

I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to the

Rainbow Bridge.
