PawPrints Magazine's HOMELESS COVER MODEL

The person or family who adopts me will

be soooooo lucky! My

name is River and I’m ready to give you my heart - it’s filled

with love! I never know a stranger and am always

friendly. ‘Sweet’ and ‘gentle’ are two other words that describe me. At just 1½-years-old, I’m a female Pit

Bull Terrier who is ready to move easily into someone’s home as I am already house-trained,

leash-trained and crate-trained. I can sit on command and I love to cuddle. (Check me out with my teddy bear!) I would be more than happy to snuggle with

you on the couch while watching TV. I’m also playful and enjoy tennis balls and slinky toys. I have been

around cats, but I paid them no mind. Oh yes, I also enjoy going for walks and am great with children. As

for my health, I am spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. As my foster mom says, “There is no reason anyone wouldn’t want this

beautiful, loving girl.” If you’d like to make me a member of your family, please call P.E.A.R. (Pender Endangered Animal Rescue) at 910-675-0867. You can also email [email protected]. I’d like to

now thank Dick Parrott for taking my photo. I had a great time at the photo shoot and melted everyone’s

heart. Now all I need is the chance to melt yours! P.S. Notice the heart on the corner of my photo?

You’ll find one on each homeless Bully breed in the magazine. Turn the page and find a heart to love!

LOST DOG - REWARD! "Chien" - Male Walker Hound

. Chien (“Shin”) is a 2-year-old male Walker Hound. He looks

neutered but is not. He is terrified of loud noises, quick movements and most men. April 19th he got spooked and ran into the woods at Ashton Crossroads (Ashton Road and Old River Road junction).

Last seen (4/29) WITHOUT collar in woods at Ashton Farms. Reported to have been zapped by electric fence around corn feed and bolted (ripping fence from post). Tracks were in the direction of Burgaw away from Rocky Point. Certain to be seeking a food

source - he might approach horse feed or scraps. He is not aggressive at all – very skittish!

If you see him, please call immediately (day or night)!

Would someone bring me home? My name is

Beau (CM3716) and I’m a very sweet boy who

wants nothing more than to belong to a family

again! At just 2-years-old, I have lots of memo-ries to make with some-one special like you. I’m

an American Stafford-shire Terrier, with per-

haps a bit of Boxer mixed in. See that kissable

Boxer mouth of mine? I will come to you with a lot

of good qualities. For example, I am house-trained and I know how to sit on

command. In fact, they gave me good treats while taking my photos and I happily sat down in order to receive them. I love all the people I meet and am also vaccinated. Won’t you come to the shelter and get to know me? Please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. They’ll be happy to give you driv-

ing directions or tell you even more!

I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!

I’m a blue-eyed Siamese boy who is ready to steal your heart! My name is Cicero and my foster mom wants you to know that I’m the

sweetest boy ever! I love to be held and petted, I’ll sleep in bed beside you if it’s al-

lowed, and I’ll keep you com-pany while you surf the inter-

net. I get along great with dogs and other cats and I’m generally a quiet fellow. The only time I’m really vocal is

when I’m riding in the car on the way to a vet visit. (But most cats are like that, I’ve

heard.) Speaking of vets, I’m in excellent health! I’m neu-tered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I guess by now you’re wondering how I ever wound up homeless. Well, my owner died and there was no one left to take care of

me. At 6 years of age, I have a lot of love and affection to give my new family in the future ahead. Do yourself a favor and call about me today! I’m with Pender County

Humane Society and their number is 910-259-7022.

I am sponsored by Cindy Meyers in loving memory of Harley and Murphy.

GREAT DOG ALERT!

My name is Sonny and I am

a wonderful Yellow Labrador Retriever. I am

such a good boy! I am really, really smart and super attentive. Look how easily I sat for my picture. I am a fun-loving young dog who needs an active, energetic family who likes to play and throw tennis balls. I get along with everyone and everything,

walk well on a leash and am house-trained. Labs are the best family dogs out there and if you choose

me, I won't let you down. It's very hard to believe that I sat at Animal Control for 2-months while poten-tial adopters passed me by. My foster mom says I have keeper status, meaning she'd keep me if she could. She doesn't just say that about every dog she fosters either! If you would like to know more about me or would like to inquire about adoption, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557.

I’m a wonderful family dog

named Bella! Look at my photo and you will see

how well-behaved and obedient I am.

All they did was hold up a treat,

say ‘sit’, and I sat right down with no hesitation. I’m a 2-year-old Boxer/Bulldog mix who was found at Ani-mal Control with my nine puppies.

They have all been adopted so

I’m ready to find a home where it’s my turn to be the baby. I love everyone and never meet a stranger.

I’m also house-trained, leash-trained and great with children and other dogs. I’m sweet, gentle, calm and

just an all-around terrific girl. I hope someone (preferably with a fenced-in yard) will recognize what a jewel they would have in me. Please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022. I can’t

wait to get started on our new life together!

My name is Bailey and I am a very

sweet Labrador and Hound mixed boy

looking for a perfect someone. Labs and hounds are wonder-ful breeds and I have both so I am a true

catch! I am fun, funny to watch, and goofy but sweet as

honey. I have a happy-go-lucky atti-

tude and would flour-ish with just about anyone. I am around 1-year-old, am already house-trained, and am pretty calm for a

youngster. I like to just follow you around the house or yard and lay by your feet. I am great in the car and

learning to follow on a leash. I am pretty smart, too! I already know “sit”, “no” and respond GREAT to correc-

tion and would excel in obedience classes. Even though I don't need them, it would be fun for me and

you! I am good with dogs, cats and kids. I am just the perfect little fellow looking for that right person or fam-ily. If you would like to know more about me or would like to inquire about adoption, call Adopt-An-ANGEL at

910-392-0557.

My name is Nicole

and these

are my four

babies! Roger

and Jester

are the boys; Splash and Sissy are the girls. I’m a loving, friendly and affectionate girl, around 1-year of age, and my kittens are 9-weeks-old. We are ready

for adoption, so hurry over now and fill out an applica-tion. Be sure to cuddle us while you’re here! For driving directions or other info, call Pender County

MISSING CAT

Connor is a 7-year-old male American Longhair (grey and white with a very bushy

grey tail) and weighs approximately 14 pounds. He is an indoor/outdoor cat

and is up-to-date on all his shots. Last seen S. Green Tee Road in Hampstead.

If you have seen him, please call 910-232-4512 or send an email to [email protected].

I’m such a darling! My name is Floyd

(A040096) and I can make hearts melt on

the spot! I’m a 3-year-old boy and they tell me I’m a Schnauzer

mix. I was found as a stray, but I act like

someone who is very used to family life. I know how to sit on command, and I’ll

also shake paws with you when asked. I

definitely know what a leash is for - just put it around my neck and I’ll turn to the door,

ready to go for a walk. I also appear to be house-trained - while taking my photo, the PawPrints ladies could tell I needed to answer nature’s call and they took me outside. Yep, they were right! I was just waiting for someone to take me to the great outdoors. As for my personality, just take a look at my smile! I am happy and friendly and never know a stranger. I love to

be petted and I love sitting for treats. I’ll make a wonderful companion for some very lucky person or family. Call

about me today! I’m at Brunswick County Animal Control and their number is 910-754-8204.

I am sponsored by Willetts Horse Farm, Bolivia, NC in

loving memory of Maya.

My name is Snowy and I am a social butterfly! I am a very affectionate and fun 30 pound Bea-gle mix. I have never met a stranger. I love everyone - especially children and dogs. (I

would love it if you had another dog for me to

play with!) I love to play and go for walks and runs. I will even pull

you on a skateboard - kind of like the Alaskan Sleigh Dogs! I am very healthy - spayed, vacci-

nated, and on heart-worm prevention. I am house-trained and crate-trained, and I walk very nicely on a leash. I am very smart and

know how to sit, stay and wait for my food or for treats. I even know how to play hide-and-seek and find it (my

people friends hide treats in the house and I find them). If your family wants a super-fun, loving dog, I am the

one for you! Please call 910-799-5297 or email [email protected] to adopt me. I will bring my food,

crate and my very comfortable dog bed with me!

Just think - if you adopt me, you could be holding me like this! My name is Bandit and I’m adorable with a capital ‘A’! I’m a

3-year-old, 8 pound, Chi-huahua/Pomeranian boy. I will bring lots of love and

joy into my new house-hold, that’s for sure. Be-

fore coming to the shelter, I lived in a foster home

and I got along great with the two Jack Russells who

lived there. I also liked sleeping in bed with my foster dad and my pre-

ferred position is on my back. How cute is that! I talk when excited and I’m very loyal. I love squeaky latex toys and I enjoy going for walks. I’m house-trained, neutered, vacci-nated and on heartworm prevention. A cutie pie like me

won’t stay homeless long - call the New Hanover Humane Society right away so you can be the lucky one who takes

me home! The number is 910-763-6692.

I am sponsored by Levi Donovan. Please consider adoption.

Adopt-An-ANGEL

June 2011 www.facebook.com/PawPrintsMagazine 9

►My name is Lassie and yes, I am a Collie mix. I am

ONE SWEET-heart of a dog. I get along well with other dogs and kids, but

haven't been around a cat yet. I was picked up running loose

with another dog who has already been adopted, but for some unknown reason I have been overlooked. I am eager to please, love people and am

absolutely breathtaking to look at. I walk well on a leash and have really good manners. Please someone out there,

read this and say, "Lassie, come home!"

►My name is Farrah and I’ve had a really rough

start. Since I am a Stafford-shire Terrier, I am looking for

someone experienced with my breed. Since my history is unknown, I am not recom-

mended for a family with other pets or small children. You can tell by my teeth and the condition I was in that my life was rough before I came to Adopt-An-ANGEL. Now, I

have fattened up, my coat is shiny, my overall health has improved tremendously and I am blossoming. I am abso-lutely devoted to you if you just spend some time with me. I walk well on a leash, am house-trained and heartworm negative. If you look closely into my eyes in this picture, you can almost look into my soul and feel my heartache.

◄My name is Joy and I am extremely loving and well trained. I sit on command, shake with both hands and catch treats in my mouth. I am attentive and eager to please. I am about 3-years-old and must have had a home where some-one trained me. I do best in a home without dogs or cats, but I love people. I am so affec-tionate. I am loyal and little, too. I weigh less than 30 pounds. Please adopt me!!

►My name is Shelby and I am a magnificent looking Hound. I was the one and

only puppy my mother had at Animal Control.

Adopt-An-ANGEL rescued us and I was quickly

adopted. At 9-months of age, I was returned be-

cause my daddy got a job far, far away and had to

move. I couldn't go. I am better with older kids be-cause I can easily knock down a youngster. I do well with most other dogs, but would need to meet yours to be com-

pletely sure. I am spayed, up to date with my shots and heartworm negative. They seem to characterize us Hounds

as either crazy or lazy. I seem to be of the lazy caliber of Hounds. I am a big girl around 60 pounds.

◄My name is Recess and I was dumped in the K-2 play-ground at Bolivia Elementary

School in November. Yup, you heard it right, they dropped me into the playground and left me there. Just in case I somehow

got in there on my own, ads were run looking for my owner, but no one claimed me. I love kids and other dogs, but I'm

not a fan of cats. I love atten-tion and am a total cuddle

buddy! I am one of those very loving dogs who leans into you

for love. I just melt when you touch me. I am already neu-tered, have been treated for heartworms, and am current on my shots. I am already house-trained and crate-trained, and

just full of personality. I am very smart and already know basic commands but if you have some treats, I am a sponge

to learn anything new! Please come and adopt me...I am just too perfect to be homeless!

◄My name is Molly and I’m a 7-year-old, spayed Tortie and Tabby mix. I have the unique talent of being able to purr and meow at the same time! I’m a professional head-butter and can make anyone feel loved. I’m loveable, sweet and ready to move into your home today. Won’t you adopt me and let me be part of your family?

Thank you K-38 for Cinco de Bow-Wow and thank you to Hope From Helen for

your donations!

Page 10: PawPrints Magazine June 2011

I hope you will overlook my current ap-

pearance as I just had to

have my eye removed. The surgery went well and I’m

healing nicely...just

don’t look so hot with half of

my face shaved. My

name is Fuzzy and I was origi-nally taken in

by Pender County Animal Control. They

contacted Furever

Friends because I desperately needed medical attention. My eye was extremely swollen and had actually ruptured! Ouch! I’ve put all of that behind me and am thankful to be pain-free now. I love, love, love being held. I have already been spayed and I’m current on age appropriate vaccina-

tions. At 7-weeks of age, I am overflowing with personality, I’m good with dogs and other cats, I’m litter-trained, and I’m

ready to love you forever. For more info or to adopt me, please call Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910-383-2100

(Monday through Saturday between 8am-6pm).

◄URGENT, URGENT! My time

is running out! I appeared in PawPrints last month but no one has taken me home!

I’m hoping and praying that you’ll come meet me - there’s just no

reason why I haven’t found a family! My

name is Stucco (A039358) and I am a precious, friendly boy. My little pink tongue is sometimes ‘stuck’ out, so that’s how I got my

name! I’m such an adorable kitty and I love

to he held and rubbed. I’ll lay in your arms like a baby and tell you how content I am by my purrs. At just 2-years-old, I could make someone so very happy. I promise to fill your

life with affection, cuddles and endless friendship. Please adopt me today!

►Chocolate kisses, anyone? I’ve got lots to give you! My

name is Hershell (A040198) and I’m a 2-year-old male

Chocolate Lab who was found as a stray. I’m a very

friendly boy who doesn’t understand why I’m at a

shelter. I went for a walk during my photo opportunity, and I was so happy to snack

on some treats. Toys and balls are other favorites. Adopt me and let’s play!

►Small, adorable dog alert! My name is Mandy (A040241) and, if I were any

cuter, it would probably be against

the law! At just 2-years-old, I’m a

tan and cream female Chihuahua mix with a loving heart and a happy personality. I prance around like a little showgirl, and I

kinda look like a ‘Toto’ dog. And just like Dorothy, you can

carry me around. I’m light as a feather! I was found as a stray, but I sure do

love being with people. I’m a real gem, so hurry on over!

►I’d be a terrific choice for your family! My name is

Vera (A040199) and I’m a super-sweet, friendly, petite girl with the softest fur ever. I arrived at the shelter with

my babies (even though I’m a baby myself at 1-year-old)

and they were adopted. Now it’s my turn for happily ever after! I have grey and white fur, but my eyes are my best feature. They’re

blue in the center, but fade out to a soft green. Come see me for yourself today!

◄If your heart has been aching for a cat to adore, I’m your guy! My name is Midas (A040143) and I’m the loveable companion you’ve been searching for. I’m a big orange and white boy and I don’t have a mean bone in my body. All I want is to cuddle and be rubbed. At 4-years-old, I was found as a stray, but a boy like me belongs with humans. I know I could make you very happy!

►Did you grow up with purebred Cocker Spaniels?

Or maybe you’ve just always wanted to adopt one? Well, here I am to make your day!

My name is Miss Miller (A040220) and I’m a 4-year-old girl who is as sweet and friendly as they come. In my photo, I am sitting on com-

mand for a treat. Pretty smart, huh? I could stand to

put on a little weight, so I really enjoy these snacks.

My little nubbin tail wags and wags when you give me attention. I have a playful per-sonality, but I’m also very gentle. I enjoy meeting new

people and have beautiful brown eyes. Adopt me!

Hi, my name is Peaches! You can’t

tell by my smiling face, but my earlier

life was a sad one. I was kept outside all the time and gave

birth to litter after litter of puppies. But all

that has changed! My new friends at the

shelter say I’ll soon be someone’s faithful companion and, with

my spay surgery com-plete, I’ll never have to worry about puppies again. I’m an 8-year-old, friendly and loving Golden Retriever mix. All I want is some TLC and a nice place to live. I lived in a foster home for a while and am fully house-trained. I

discovered air conditioning is a wonderful invention! I’m also vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m not asking for much, just kindness and good care. I’ll give

you lots of love in return. Let’s get started on our new life together! Call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297.

I am sponsored by Marybeth and Elliott Tepper in loving honor of Tripp (who was adopted from

Paw’s Place). We love him so much!

Hello! My name is Gracie and, at 10-years-old, I’m hop-ing to find a special person or family who will bring me back home where I belong. I was once part of a loving family, but then a day came when everything changed. My

owner became ill and could no longer keep me. There was no one else to take me

in and I was brought to Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue (SOAR). It’s quite a change to go from a comfy

home with familiar sights and sounds to the strange surroundings of an animal shelter. I’m an affectionate Tabby girl who enjoys receiving attention - I like to be held and will happily snuggle up in your arms. I’m also spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. There’s no

doubt that I would make someone very happy with my purr-ing, pleasing personality. If you’d like to meet me, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340. They can give you very easy

directions and I’ll be so happy to greet you!

I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to the

Rainbow Bridge.

CAT: Cat Adoption Team

◄Hello up there! My name is Caddo and I’m a 1-year-old Tabby boy.

If you’re looking for a happy, friendly and

social companion, I’m your guy! I love every-one I meet and have a great time playing with toys. I get along well with other felines and would be a great play-mate or cuddlemate for children. My back leg curls under slightly at the toes, but it doesn’t

bother me a bit. The vet says it was never broken

and I run, walk and play just like anyone else. I’m already neutered, vaccinated, litterbox-trained and ready to go!

◄My name is Nemo and I was pictured last month with my brother, Marnie.

He found a home and now I’m alone! Won’t someone come adopt me, too? I’m a young orange boy, just 11-

months-old, and I don’t have a mean bone in my body. I love to play, will

purr like crazy when rubbed or held, and I like

other cats. I’m gentle and affectionate, and I’m

already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-

trained. We could be the best of friends, so hurry!

◄I’m a declawed beauty who goes by the name of Lara. Would you adopt me?My owner was sent to the hospital and I was left alone to fend for myself all winter. It’s not good for a clawless cat to be outside, so my new home should be one where I stay indoors only. I would be very happy as the solo cat and am already spayed, up to date on shots and trained in the litterbox.

◄Hello! I’m Grayson, an orange and white boy with tangerine-colored eyes! You’ll be awed by their beauty. At just 3-years-old, I’m a total sweetheart who wants nothing more than to be loved. I adore being scratched behind the ears and I enjoy toys, but my favorite toy of all is a crumpled up ball of paper. I’m already neutered, up to date on shots and litterbox-trained. Won’t you take me home with you?

►I’m pure white, with eyes that display two colors, one blue and one gold.

Let’s face it - I’m simply stunning!

My name is Chrys (short for

Chrystal) and I’m a 1-year-old boy who is very

loving and sweet. I was running out of time at Animal Control when Cat Adoption Team found me. I’m already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained, and I like being around other cats. I’d

be a good friend to kids, too! Come meet me today.

►Hi, my name is Lucky Lori. I was attacked by dogs and I ran under a

trailer to hide. After I found a hiding place,

I ended up getting my leg caught in a

wire which broke my leg. The lady who

found me turned me over to Cat Adoption Team, and they took

me to a great vet. Sadly, my leg was so badly wounded that it had to be

removed. Could you make a donation to help cover my medical bill? Please send it to CAT, 616 Chestnut St.,

Wilmington, NC 28401. To adopt me, call 910-792-9014.

I’m So Cuddly! Why Have I Been Homeless

For So Long? My name is LoverBoy, and I truly live up to my name. Just look at how happily I’m sitting in this person’s arms. I adore

humans and will always be thrilled to snuggle up with you. For some reason I’ve been overlooked, and have watched many other cats find homes. My friends at Cat Adoption Team can’t understand why I’ve been

waiting so long. I’m a 2-year-old grey and white boy who is already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I love to be brushed and am great with kids. I also play

very well with other cats. I have a gentle, loving personal-ity and would be a cherished companion for anyone. If

you’ve been searching for the perfect family friend, please call Cat Adoption Team at 910-792-9014 and leave a

message. We’re also at Petsmart seven days a week!

I am sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has rescued a homeless animal.

I’m CoCo MoonPie and I’m a 9-year-old

female Boxer mix. Seven years ago, I was

found wandering on Highway 17 by a kind lady who scooped me up and rescued me.

I’ve been living at Paw’s Place ever since! Please, won’t someone take a chance on me and bring me home? I’m a truly wonderful

girl. I enjoy chew toys and being around other dogs and people. I’m so very sweet - I love

giving lots of delicious doggie kisses. If you have a 6-foot fenced-in yard and a cat-free home, I hereby promise to

be your loyal, loving, lifetime buddy. To find out more, or if you need driving directions, please call Paw’s Place at

910-845-7297. Let’s get to know one another, OK?

I am sponsored by WhatsOnWilmington.com in honor of Kizzy Totten, the elder stateswoman of rescued

Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

Cat Tails

►After several years of wait-ing, my brother finally found a

home, so now it is my turn. My name is Brando and I am a beautiful hunk of a cat and

currently fostered at the Cala-bash Art Gallery in downtown

Shallotte. When you drive down Main Street, you will

often find me sunning in the big front window. As an added bonus, I’m an art connois-seur. I’ve had lots of experience evaluating art as I wait

for a home. I am a lonely, 6-year-old male who is hoping for the best. My name should be Monet or Manet. Feel free to change it when you get me home. I am a special

needs cat - dental problems. That’s not a problem for me so I hope it isn’t a problem to you.

◄Maybe if they named me

A-Rod instead of Rodney I would

get noticed? That would have made

me one of the world famous Yankees and

everyone would know me. I’d

have more offers for a good home and I could sign the biggest and

best contract! I’ve been waiting for over a year for my home. I do have one very cute habit, if you pick me up I’ll wrap my paws around your neck and hold on. I don’t ever want to be put down! Come visit me and see for yourself!

►A boy named Marion, almost as bad as a boy named Sue, don’t you

think? Won’t you please come adopt me and give me a real manly name? I am one of the most affec-

tion kitties you’ll ever meet. I love to play but once I’m

tired, I want to snuggle. So, now you know everything about me. Take me home and you can tell me all about you. You

see, you get a therapist for free!

◄Calico kitties are always the first ones to be adopted so why am I still here?

As you can see I am a beautiful pastel Calico. My name is

Shana and I am only 10-months-old. I am very

sweet, as every girl should be,

and l love atten-tion, just like every girl. You can’t tell in my picture but I recently had some surgery on one ear and now it curls

over at the top. It just makes me even cuter. If you take me home I will snuggle with you forever!

◄They call me Rivet, and just like the strong fastener that I’m named for, I will at-

tach myself to you and never let go! As you can see, I am a beautiful gray Tabby with

splashes of white. I just cele-brated my 1st Birthday and would like to have a belated party at your house. I am

timid at first but if you under-stand cats, you know it is just

my protective mode to keep from getting hurt. Let me feel comfortable and you’ll see what a great cat can be.

◄Just like a comfy terry cloth robe, I’ll wrap myself around you. My name is

Terry and I am a one-man welcoming committee. If you come visit me at our building, you’ll recognize

me as I rush right up to the lobby window to greet you. I am a little over 2-years-old

and one big boy. But I am just one big “pile of mush” who will melt into your lap!

Page 16: PawPrints Magazine June 2011

Just like the

flower, I’m blos-soming

with love and af-fection!

My name is Petunia and I’m a 7 to 8-year-old

silver Minia-

ture Schnauzer female. Although I’m slightly overweight, I still only weigh approximately 10 pounds soaking wet. I

have just retired from being a breeder and am ready for a life of leisure. I have spent the majority of my life provid-ing those precious little puppies that you often see in pet

shops, so now it is my turn to be cherished and pampered the way all my little babies have been! I’m a very loving

little girl and will make a fine family companion. I am good with other dogs. I may need a more relaxed home; per-

haps I could make someone else’s retired lap very warm! I am heartworm negative, spayed, up to date on all vac-

cines, and micro-chipped. If you are interested in me and would like to find out more, you can go to

www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues. If you need an application mailed or faxed to

you, please call 910-264-8300 and have one sent.

Need more love and fun in your life? Adopt me!

My name is Roxi and I’m a 3-year-old Pit Bull Terrier

with a playful and affection-ate personality. I once had a loving home, but my own-ers moved overseas and I was unable to go. I’m now at the rescue, waiting for another loving family or

person to take me in. I am used to living indoors and am house-trained, crate-trained and leash-trained. My former family had two little girls so I am accustomed to being around children. I

LOVE toys and I LOVE balls - it would be awesome to play some games in a fenced-in backyard. A young, active fam-

ily would be a great match for me as I love to go to dog parks and other outings. I’m very family-friendly and am

used to riding in the grocery cart at Petsmart. I would be an excellent candidate for agility and am bright, alert and atten-

tive. I know how to sit on command and am already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Would

you like to meet me? Are you familiar with my breed? If so, please call Pender Endangered Animal Rescue (PEAR) at 910-675-0867 or email [email protected]. Oh, if

you already have a dog, bring him or her to our get-together so we can get acquainted!

►I’m a handsome boy named George Clooney (A255083).

My fur is gray except for the white speckles of fur dotted all

over my body. I’m 3-years-old, loveable and very friendly.

I love head and neck rubs, headbutting, and I will roll over

on my back at your feet. I’m very cuddly and don’t mind

being kissed on my nose. Someone found me as a stray

in a trailer park and brought me here to the shelter. If you want to adopt a sweet boy, I

hope it will be me.

►If you think I look sweet in my picture, just wait until you meet me. I’m just as sweet as they come! My name is Heidi (A254028) and I’m a

spayed Greyhound mix. I’m approximately 4-years-old and was brought to Animal

Control after I had been run-ning loose for 2-weeks. I

enjoy back scratches, I can sit and shake hands with both paws, I’m good on a leash, I’m eager to please

and will work for food. I en-joy being touched and will

gently nuzzle my nose under your hand to encourage you

to pet me. I’m an awesome dog who will be the bestest friend you could ever ask for. I’m waiting for you.

►If you could love a cute, cuddly pooch

named Monkey (A254968), then it’s my lucky day. I am so sad

and depressed and worried about being

homeless. It’s an awful feeling that nobody

should ever experience. I’m a German Shep-

herd and Rough Collie mix who was picked up as a stray on Wrights-

ville Avenue in Wilming-ton. I’m very pretty, I like to be petted and I hope you will give me a chance. I deserve to feel safe again and blossom in your home. Just come out to the shelter and take me into the playroom so we can get to

know each other. You won’t leave without me.

►My name is PeiPei (A236561) and I’m a petite

Chinese Sharpei mix weigh-ing in at approximately 30

pounds. I’m just 2-years-old and a true sweetheart. I

was surrendered to the shelter by my owner and am hoping to find true love. I’m friendly, inquisitive, good on a leash and know how to sit,

shake and lay down on command. I love playing with stuffed toys and will make you giggle with my silly antics. So come on

and adopt a knee-high furry friend like me!

◄My name is Basil (A255114) and I’m a brown Tabby who was surrendered by my owners. I’m spayed and just 2-years-old. I’m such a sweet and pretty girl but shelter life has me really stressed out. I desperately want to be part of your fam-ily. Just give me chin rubs or neck scratches and I’ll be putty in your hands. All I need is for you to save me.

◄Hi! My name is Gucci (A253771) and I’m an adult girl who was picked up by Animal

Control after being dumped at a local veterinarian’s office. Now, I’m here at the shelter hoping to find true love with a forever fam-

ily. I was already featured in last month’s issue and no one

came for me. I have been spayed and I don’t mind being held. I will even make biscuits when you hold me. I really en-joy being rubbed and can chow

down on some yummy treats! A sweet princess like me should be cherished in a home and not sitting alone in a

cage. Contact the shelter about adopting me today!

Page 18: PawPrints Magazine June 2011

I’m Jake, and I recently came into the care of

Schnauzer Rescue of the Carolinas because I had

been picked up as a stray by Animal Control and was about to be euthanized due to over-crowded conditions

at the facility. What a waste that would have been

because I have so much potential! I have that clas-sic Schnauzer profile, but a rather petite and delicate bone structure. I weigh only 13.5 pounds. I am

happy with human contact and easily persuaded into play-ing and “smiling”. I crave attention and am happy to be

held. I am eager to be with people and love to greet new people who come through the door! Thus far I have not

been exposed to other dogs, but I was fine at the groomer salon with other canines. I am up to date on all my vacci-

nations, neutered, heartworm negative, and micro-chipped. I will be a great family companion. It is very obvious that I

have a nice personality, and I really perked up after my grooming so I genuinely enjoy being an integral part of the family unit, and I take great pride in being well-groomed! If you are interested in me and would like to find out more, go to www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. There you can

fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues. If you need an application mailed or faxed,

please call 910-264-8300 to have one sent.

My name is Herman and I’m a very sweet and lov-ing Hound dog. I’m calm and laid-back but I do enjoy daily

walks. The Hound in me just loves all the different smells to be found in this great big world. I am approxi-mately 3-years-old, I’ve already been

neutered, I’m current on all vaccinations

and I tested negative for heartworms! I’m

really good with other dogs and I mean

really good. I have the best time playing with them. I’m also good with cats but my new home would ideally have another pooch for me to love. I’m good on a leash, I’m quieter than most other Hounds and I would love for my new home to have a fenced yard that I can go out and

play in. If you could help me out by opening up your heart and home to me, I’ll promise to give all my unconditional

love to you! For more info or to adopt me, please call Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910-383-2100 (Monday

through Saturday between 8am-6pm).

◄I’m a sweetheart who enjoys living inside with my family. Would I be a match for you? I’m Petunia, a 3-year-old Tabby girl who is spayed, up to date on shots and litterbox-trained. I use scratching posts and I also enjoy sitting in windows and gazing at the great outdoors. I’m good with children, other cats and dogs and I love to be pet-ted. Could I be your girl?

◄Why hasn’t a loveable, well-trained and very

handsome boy like me been adopted? Just

look at my friendly face and smile. And check out how I’m sitting on

command. All you have to do is show me a treat

and my bottom plops down. This is your

chance to scoop up a wonderful boy! My

name is Crosby and I’m a 3-year-old Rottweiler who is already house-

trained. No accidents in the house for me! I’m

sweet and friendly to everyone I meet and am neutered and vaccinated. Let’s start loving each other today!

◄Hello, friends! Ready to go home with a darling girl like me? My name is Daphne and I’m part Lab, but I’m also mixed with something small. At just 3-years-old, I have a happy, cheerful nature and I’m also house-trained! I used to live with kids (ages 5, 9 and 10) and I am friendly to other small dogs. I want to live indoors with the family and play in a fenced-in yard. Let’s go!

►If a precious orange Tabby is your heart’s

desire, get ready to fall in love! I’m Mr. Kitty and I think I’m the perfect man for you. You’ll never be

lonely again. I’m a neutered, vaccinated,

litterbox-trained darling who weighs in at a soft

and cuddly 14 pounds. I sure do love being with humans and possess a calm, mellow, laid-back

attitude. Prepare to have your heart melted!

◄I just had a great idea - I need a home and you need a wonderful companion. Let’s get together and solve two needs at once! My name is Willie and I’m a young boy with grey and white Tabby stripes. I love being around people and I have a lot of fun with other cats. If you visit, you might catch me ‘play–wrestling’ with my buddy, Mr. Kitty. I am already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. You’ll adore me!

►Looking for a puffball of love? Your search is over! I’m Webster, a

Brussels Griffon/Pug mix who weighs in at a mere 18 pounds. My former owner had to go into a

nursing home, so I’m look-ing for another loving fam-ily to bring me home. At

7-years-old, I already know the things that make

one a great house dog: I’m house-trained, leash-trained and very loving. I really enjoy playing with tennis balls and soft toys and I’m very happy being around my people. I’m already neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Let’s

begin our new life real soon - call about me today!

Here I am at a Paw’s Place adoption fair, wait-ing for my new family to

find me. I behave so beautifully in public and would be a great com-panion for anyone! My

name is Skittles and I’m a 35 pound Hound girl who just turned 1-year-old at the end of March. I wish I could have cele-brated my birthday in my new home! Still, I have high hopes that I’ll soon

find the family of my dreams. I am a house-trained darling who lost my former home because a new baby was com-ing and there was no time for me. I’m great with cats and

other dogs, but would probably be happiest as the only dog since I can be protective of my food. If you’d like to see what a wonderful, loving boy I am, please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297 and let’s arrange a day to meet!

I am sponsored by Marybeth & Elliott Tepper in loving memory of Charleston and Scarlet, who loved all their

sisters and brothers. We all miss you so much.

I always behave like a perfect

angel at Paw’s Place adoption

fairs - just take a look at my photo for proof! I bet I’d

behave just as wonderfully at

dog parks, on the beach, by the

lake, or in your home. Adopt me and I’ll show you! My name is Trooper

and I’m a gorgeous black and tan Coonhound. I was found on Route 87 and am a big, gentle baby at just 40 pounds. I’m quite a youngster, too, at 1½-years-old. I have a lot of years ahead to make my new family very

happy. I play extremely well with big dogs and little dogs - in fact, I let the little dogs walk all over me. I don’t mind! I’m very friendly to all the people I meet, and I never say no to a treat. If you can provide me with a very loving

home, please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297 and let’s start talkin’!

◄Wouldn't you love to live with an

adorable girl like me? My name is Thelma and I’m a young Chihuahua

mix, just 18-months-old. My mother and I were dropped off in front of the Bruns-

wick County Sheriff’s Department. At first, everyone thought we were strays, but then

we were recognized as being former members of a puppy mill. I’m a highly affectionate girl who loves to be held. I

get along great with other dogs and am house-trained and leash-trained. You can see my mother on page 38. Come

to the shelter and meet me!

Paw’s Place is in DESPERATE need of donations to pay its veterinary bill!

Paw’s Place recently rescued eight dogs with medical conditions that need treatment. Most are heartworm positive, one has a leg injury and one has a head injury. Any monetary amount you can

Please send your tax-deductible contribution to Paw’s Place, 3701 Boiling Spring Rd.,

◄I sure do hope I’ll be part of a loving family again real soon. My

name is Bruno and I’m a Hound mix boy who

was adopted from Paw’s Place when I was a

puppy. Unfortunately, my family moved away and was unable to take

me with them. I just turned 1-year-old, so I

hope the rest of my birthdays will be

celebrated with my new family, not at the shelter! I’m a neutered fellow who is already

house-trained and leash-trained. I’m great with dogs and children, and I get along fabulously with everyone who comes to the shelter. I’m sure my perfect match is waiting for me out

there - come on over and let’s connect!

◄Look at me! I’m an expert at sitting on

command and waiting for a treat. My name is Zoe and I’m a 6 to

7-year-old female Bea-gle who weighs in at a mere 25 to 30 pounds. I was once a beloved

family member, but my owner could no longer keep me after going

through financial strug-gles. The good news

is that I’m perfect for you! I am house-trained, leash-trained, and love to be cuddled and kissed. I have a

good-natured personality, am friendly to children and I really enjoy going for walks. I am so happy to receive

attention from humans and love to be petted. Adopt me!

◄My name is Holly and I was

found by the railroad tracks on Christmas Eve.

I’m a 22-month-old Hound with one

blue eye and one brown. I’m so

pretty! Right now I weigh 50 pounds,

but I could stand to gain another five.

I’m great with other dogs and love to play. I enjoy rawhides, going for walks

and getting hugged and kissed by humans. I have a gentle personality and am already spayed, vaccinated

and on heartworm prevention. Come meet me!

◄I’m a small Hound - just 30 pounds - and I was

found as a stray in South Carolina. My name is Juliet and I’m a sweet,

gentle, 1-year-old girl who would love to live in a quiet

home with my very own Romeo. I play extremely well with other dogs and enjoy taking walks. I’m

looking for a person or fam-ily with a fenced-yard and a desire to share their life

with a good-natured girl like me. I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm

prevention. How about giving this Juliet a happy ending?

I’m Bertie, a special needs puppy who is looking for a spe-cial, loving family. I was found at 3-weeks-old in a ditch. I was

thrown out of a car and my head was injured when it hit

the ground. I was almost dead when found, but the kind peo-ple at River Road Animal Hos-pital helped stabilize my body temperature by carrying me around for days. I overcame all obstacles and was pam-

pered day and night. At 6-weeks-old, a Paw’s Place vol-unteer took me home to foster. I lived there with 3 ferrets, 3 Chihuahuas, and a Border Collie, and I learned to social-

ize, play, and ride in the car. At 10-weeks, I came to Paw’s Place and am now residing with large and small

dogs. I am a gentle soul who just wants to be loved. Due to my brain trauma, my motor skills are slower than usual

and my vision is affected. I hear well, but I need large motions to get my visual attention. I have no peripheral vision, so large, active dogs knock me over. It would be best for me to find a home with dogs my size or smaller.

I’m now 12-weeks-old and weigh 20 pounds. My feet are webbed, so they tell me I’m part Lab. I love belly rubs and I happily allow the tiny puppies to dominate me. I am neu-

tered and vaccinated and ready for a permanent home. How about yours? Call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297.

It’s Raining Kittens at Pender County Animal

Control! Kitten Season has officially

begun, and there’s no place more evident of this fact than at Pender County

Animal Control. We are just two of THIRTY kittens

spending our days and nights at the shelter in

search of loving homes. It’s sad that our first few weeks of life are spent

looking between the bars of a cage and standing on

a metal floor. And as you know, there is always limited space here. When more kittens arrive, room must be

made - and that often happens by euthanization. Don’t blame Animal Control, though. Blame the folks who don’t

spay and neuter their cats. They’re the reason we’re here. If you’d like to adopt one of us, or foster us tempo-

rarily, please call or come out today! If you’re part of a non-profit rescue group, you’re also invited to come take

one or more of us into your program. We come in all sizes, shapes and colors, and you can bet that we're all equally precious. For more information, please call Pen-

from, you’re sure to find the one that steals your heart!

Hi, I'm Daisy. If you're looking for a loyal friend who is excellent com-pany and a good listener, then I'm

your girl. I love to go for walks.

You just set the pace and I'm

there, because I'm a fresh air

and nature lover. But I'm also pretty laid back and go with the flow. I guess if I were asked to describe myself in a few words I'd say agile, both mentally and physically. I'm very

observant of everything around me (especially squirrels). If you are exercising and stop for too long, I will take note and then revive you with many kisses. I like to make new dog friends but I take a minute to process their information be-fore becoming a buddy. My manners are impressive and I am house-trained. Even though I love the fresh air, I'm an inside girl at heart. Car rides are fun, too - sometimes they put me right to sleep. Maybe I should just sum it up by say-ing that I'm well-rounded and I'm pretty good looking, too, if I do say so, myself. I am heartworm positive and Adopt-An-ANGEL is raising the money for me to undergo heartworm treatment at no additional cost to my adopter. If you’d like to help me, please send your tax-deductible donation to:

9th Annual Cover Model Search: Special Pit Bull Edition

Editors’ Note: PawPrints Magazine received the following entries in its 2011 Cover Model Search. At a time when Pit Bulls and Bully Breeds often receive bad press, these four proud families offer a different perspective. If you’d like to be a loving, responsible companion to a Pit Bull, please consider adoption. Check out River on this month’s cover. Other Pit Bulls are

also available for adoption throughout the magazine and are highlighted with a heart (like the one pictured to the left).

“Skip” Submitted by: Alli Ramirez

Skip is the first dog I have owned as an adult on my own. I adopted him from Carolina Care Bullies, after fostering him for about a month. In the rescue world we call that "foster failing". I knew Skip was home the first week he was with me; it only took 3 failed potential adoptions for me to finally decide that he was here to stay. Skip has changed my life immensely, but like most rescued dogs his life has a sad beginning. He was found as a stray, a bit thin and scared, wandering in an apartment complex in Greensboro, NC, one of the unfriendliest places for a Pit Bull to be. The local animal shelter is under county mandate to euthanize Pit Bulls immediately upon intake to the shelter; they are not to be adopted to the public and not even to be pulled by rescues. Luckily for Skip, he wandered up to an angel, a woman who contacted Carolina Care Bullies to take him in. It was after this that he came to stay with me. Since then, he has changed many minds about Pit Bulls and within seven weeks of staying with me, he earned his Canine Good Citizen certification, an honor which some dogs work toward for many months. Almost a year later, Skip is on his way to becoming a therapy dog and is showing the world, one person at a time, that Pit Bulls are true lovers and make great family pets. Skip shows me everyday

that being positive regardless of the situation is the most important thing in life, and I think he should be a Cover Model so that he can show people everywhere the true nature of Pit Bulls!

“Scooby” Submitted by: Francesca and Matt Slaughter

THE TRUTH ABOUT PIT BULLS This is the story of Scooby the pit bull. As a young pup he was saved from unspeakable neglect and cruelty. My husband and I decided to foster him until he was fully rehabilitated at which time we'd find

him a great permanent home. We already had four dogs and certainly were not looking to add one more. Recovering from all of the neglect took months. Finally, he was ready to be placed for adoption. But

when reality set in we realized we could not part with Scooby, who had become a much-loved member of our family. As Scooby grew into this big magnificent dog we realized just how much misinformation and

fear was out there about Pit Bulls. Wherever we took Scooby someone always seemed to show fear de-spite his affectionate and gentle demeanor. He always gravitated to other dogs and kids, ready to lick eve-

ryone in the face. Scooby now lives with a tiny Papillion, a Miniature Pinscher, a Chinese Crested, a senior Labrador and our two small children. Scooby has proven to the world that Pit Bulls are not to be feared! He has been a phenomenal ambassador for his breed showing people every day what amazing family dogs Pit Bulls can really

be. Scooby has demonstrated to so many people that with proper socialization, exercise, discipline and loads of love Pit Bulls can make anyone the best companion they could ever hope to have.

“Tess” Submitted by: Joyce Bradley I’m Tess and my story begins in a grocery store parking lot where a good Samaritan discovered me under a vehicle. Lucky for me, she took me to Capeside Animal Hospital, Dr. Sheila Hanby and Furever Friends Rescue Group. Dr. Hanby knew this fruitcake lady with two Pit Bulls already and knew very well that once through the door, there forever. Boy, what a step up: Nice house, big king size bed, good food, nice fenced yard, play days at Dogs At Play, a new big sister Tanner, age 14, and a new big brother Turk, age 7; my mom says she has “the Statue of Limitations”. Yep, like I said, “I’ve come a long way.” Now, I’ve just got to get the big prize because you see my brother Turk was first runner up in the contest in 2005 and I just can’t have him constantly reminding me of that. I need to show him that I’m just as special. I like being a member of a household that loves rescues; they sure do treat us like royalty. In fact, Tanner is

called the Princess, I’m the Princess in Waiting and Turk is the Prince. I’ve come a long way and you can only make it better by naming me the winner of the Cover Model on PawPrints Magazine. From Tess’s parents: We feel so fortunate to have Tess as a part of our lives. She has added such joy and companionship to both us and the other canine dwellers. She wakes up each morning in such a happy mood and is always excited to see everybody in the house (and to make sure they hit the floor running). Life would be awfully dull without her.

Feature Story

“Chloe” Submitted by: Leanne Scalfaro I do animal rescue and I went to Pender County Animal Control to pull a little Bulldog mix. When I got there I was told he was already adopted, but to take a look around to see if there was anyone else I’d be interested in finding a home for. As I strolled through the outdoor kennels, I noticed this stocky little girl with these huge ears looking up at me. She looked terrified and was shaking. I walked back in and asked about her. I was told she was picked up as a stray and had been there a long time. When they brought her in so I could see her better she had to be carried in, she was absolutely terrified of everyone. I took her straight to the vet and found out she had heartworms, her ear had been cut or torn, she had scars all over her face and that she was overbred by whoever had her in the first place. I had a person who wanted to adopt her but after finding all of this out the person that had wanted to adopt her opted out because of her heartworms. After being denied a home because of heartworms I felt so bad for her. I took her to McDonald’s and shared some french fries with her, she wouldn’t take them out of my hand, I had to set them in the seat in front of her. I decided to name her Chloe and I figured that I would just

foster her for a while until I could raise enough money for her heartworm treatment. After fundraising for a month, I had all of the money for Chloe’s treatments. She went through both treatments like a champ but she still didn’t have a permanent home. Finally a person called who was interested in Chloe and I took her there, but I cried like a baby after I dropped her off. Chloe was not working out for the woman because she was just too scared; the lady said she sat by the front door most of the time looking out the door like she was looking for someone. I went back to get her a week later, the lady told me that she couldn’t see Chloe doing well with anyone but me and, needless to say, Chloe hasn't gone anywhere since. I decided to keep Chloe after realizing that she picked me. I could never imagine parting with her after everything we have been through together. I couldn’t even get her to wag her tail for the first month I had her, she would hide under everything and was sooo scared of people. Now she wags her tail non-stop, we go to the dog park every Sunday and we always stop for some McDonald’s french fries, they are her favorite. I no longer have to set them in front of her; she takes them right out of my hand. I love this dog and I feel that things really do happen for a reason and that animals really do pick their humans. I’m proud to be Chloe’s human for life. Chloe has taught me that no matter what life throws at me, I can be strong and get through it just like she did.

At just 6.8 pounds, I’m a joy to hold! My name is

Petunia and I’m a 2-year-old female Chihuahua.

My former owner was very sorry to give me up, but she could no longer take

care of me. Could you be the one who will give me a second chance at a happy

home life? I’m an ador-able heart stealer who

thrives on human interac-tion. And you’ll be so

happy to have me around - after all, I’m house-trained, leash-trained,

friendly with both dogs and cats, and friendly to children. As for my health, I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on

I am sponsored by Milo, a Pender County Humane Society shelter dog who found his forever home.

They’ve called me Cutie Pie

and it sure is easy to see why! I’m a 1-year-old-

old grey and white Tabby boy who was found living alone under someone’s porch. Now

I’m at the shelter, making pals with all the other kitties, and waiting

for my forever family. I love to curl up in one of the comfortable cat beds here, and you can often find me

sharing my nap time with another feline. I also love to be petted and held, so please don’t be deterred if I appear a bit timid at first. Just go ahead and start rubbing me and I’ll quickly melt into a very purry fellow. Oh yes, I’m also neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. If you’re the loving family I’ve been looking for, please call Pender

County Humane Society at 910-259-7022!

vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I am very affec-tionate and playful and I love other dogs, cats and people. As you can tell, I enjoy being held and I’m as light as a feather! Are you my future love?

◄You might wonder how a

dog named Pender ended

up in Brunswick County. Well, it’s because

SOAR was kind enough to take

me in when Pender County Animal Control needed to find

places for all its dogs while undergoing renovations. I’m an extremely loveable mixed-breed boy who just wants attention and affection. I’ve played well with other dogs at the shelter, so if you have one you’d like me to meet,

bring him or her out! The vet estimates I’m around 6-years-old. Won’t you come visit me today?

►I’m Lucciano, a yellow male sweet-heart. I got the name from the way I called for food when I was very young. I was born approximately July 14, 2010. The reason I’m still in my foster home is that I was such a nice cat my foster parents

considered keeping me. They would give me up, however, to a really good per-manent home. I don’t call loudly anymore, by the way, but I do like to eat and I tend to be a little over-weight, just like my late namesake, the famous opera tenor, Lucciano Pavarotti!

To meet me, call my SOAR foster mom at 910-278-4437.

►Are you looking for a companion to take on out-ings to the beach or park? Pick me! I’m Dixie and I

love doing stuff like that! I’m a playful girl, but I still know my commands. In fact, I’m sitting on command for my photo. (Just between you and me, I was waiting for them to throw me a tennis ball!) I’m a young girl, 3-

years of age, and I’m a total sweetheart. There’s not a

mean bone in my body. I’m house-trained, love affection and can’t get enough hugs or

kisses. I’m a Terrier mix who is great with children and other dogs (but no cats, please.) Adopt me, please!

►Hello! I’m an extremely affectionate

Hound boy named Gus. I was found on Ocean Isle as a stray and was so skinny.

Since my arrival, I’ve put on weight and I’ve impressed everyone

with my friendly, loving nature. I rarely even

bark! I love to play and am estimated to be around 1-year-old. I

don’t jump up on peo-ple and I’m great with

other dogs. You’ll find I’m quite handsome, too!

◄I’m a darling girl named

Fiona and I’m hoping you’ll

adopt me! I’ve been through a lot so your love

will be just what I need. You see,

my owners moved away and left me behind.

Then my tail was injured - the vet

thinks it may have been run over by a car. It’s been removed and I’ve been spayed. Despite all my troubles, I’m a loving and affectionate girl, just 1-year-old. Please take me home!

►My name is Louie and I’m a friendly, affectionate

boy. I’ve been at

SOAR for too long, so I can hardly express how

grateful I would be to be adopted! Let’s just say that lots of purrs and kisses would be in store for the one who takes me home. It’s quite a mystery why I haven’t

been snapped up. I love to play with toys and will keep my new family entertained! I use my scratching post and

litterbox and am in great health. Adopt me!

Hey, my name is Downtown

Judy Brown and I am a 1½-year-old Pit Bull. My life

did not start out so great - I was found tied up to a tree in

the yard of an abandoned house.

I had no food, water or shelter. I

was skin and bones when Animal Control found me. Luckily, Wilmington

Animal Healthcare has been taking care of me until I find my forever home. I have put on some weight and have been working on my manners. I am working on sitting on com-

mand and walking on a leash. I am also working on house-training. I am current on all my vaccines, have been spayed and am also current on my heartworm and flea preventions. I like to play with other dogs. I might have too much energy for a home with small children, but I do like to play with older

kids. If you would like to meet me, call 910-791-7101 or stop by Wilmington Animal Healthcare.

I am sponsored by Wilmington Animal Healthcare.

Thank you!

Hi! My name is Dixie Too. Have you been looking for a family dog, one who will

create lots of happy memories and bring you

lots of love? Well, I’m your girl! I’m a Yellow Lab mix,

just 1-year-old. I love playing with toys such as tennis balls and stuffed animals and I have a

friendly, social personality. I adore people and want to

be around them all the time. Since I’m playful, an

adult-only home or one with kids ages ten or older would be perfect. I wouldn’t want to accidentally knock a tiny tot down while playing. As for my health, I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Oh yes, I’m good with other dogs and walk well on a leash. Come spend some time with

me! SOAR can be reached at 910-457-6340. They’ll be happy to tell you how we can get together!

I am sponsored by Pine Valley Animal Hospital in loving memory of Sophie Campbell, so special, so

◄I’m Rosie! I’m a medium-sized Pug/Spitz mix and, at

just 4-years-old, I’m a smart, friendly girl who would be a great agility dog. I adore

children and am friendly to adult humans as well! I do

have issues with some dogs, but I’m great with cats. I’ve been working with an obedi-ence trainer and would love to continue this training with

my new family. I’m also spayed, vaccinated and on

heartworm prevention. You’d be so lucky to share your life with a great girl like me!

◄I’m a sweet, young, male Akita/Chow mix

named Ted. I have great news: I just finished my

heartworm treatment and am strong and healthy! I am a quiet but active dog

and I’ve behaved well around other dogs. I just ADORE people! I’m also very smart and will go far with basic obedience. Oh

yes, I’m also neutered, vaccinated and now on

heartworm prevention. If you’d like to adopt me, call!

◄I’m a heartmelter! My name is Jai and I’m a

happy, happy male puppy who is learning the basics such as house-training, crate-training and leash-

training. I’m just 9-months-old and am also working with an

obedience trainer. My coat is a bold red and

black brindle, almost like tiger stripes. I may be mixed with American

Staffordshire Terrier and Lab. I’m still fairly small,

and I play well with dogs. Adopt me and let’s enjoy life!

◄Hi, my name is Remington! I’m a 1½-

year-old male Irish Setter mix, and I have to say that I’m a very sweet boy. I’m great with people and I do well with most other dogs (but cats I like to chase). I am house-trained and will be a wonderful companion for an active family. I love to explore in the woods, so if you’re a hiker we’d be a

great match! I’m very smart, leash-trained and

in great health. Give yourself the gift of adopting an awesome dog like me!

◄It’s me, Hero! I am finished with my heartworm treatment and am now all ready to go home with my new family! Could my new

family be reading this? I am a Retriever/Chow mix who is

very humble and loves people. I am friendly but reserved around other

dogs. I will chase a cat. I am also house-trained,

crate-trained and a wonderful, funny guy. I am learning my basic

commands. When I come in the house for my treat, I will

sit and my eyes get real big like I am opening my mouth. I want to please and am as gentle and sweet as they come. Would you please consider bringing me home with you?

◄Enjoy life with me! My name is Jerry and I’m a 1½-year-old Shepherd mix, but I weigh just 35 pounds. I am great with most other dogs, and I LOVE people. I sure

would be happy if some-one would let me be their lap dog! I’m doing great on my house-training and I walk well on a leash. I seem to be ok with cats and am in good health.

One funny thing about me is that even though I’m a

small Shepherd, I have a deep Shepherd voice. Ruff!

STORMY’S STORY

It had been raining for hours. Everything was soaked. As I made a dash for my

car, I heard the unmistakable sound of a cat in trouble. There, perched above a storm grate, was a soaked, skinny, and very young mother cat mewing and pac-ing. As I approached, I could see a tiny,

days-old kitten, half drowned and still as death on the concrete below. I lay across the grate and shoved my

arm into the hole as far as I could, terrified I would knock the furry wet ball into the water. But, against all hope, I managed to snag its back quarters and lift the cold bun-dle out of the drain. The kitten was alive, but just barely.

Taking a trap from my trunk, I set it to trap the mom, a feral cat. As the trap slammed shut behind her I felt so much relief. I was not able to find any other kittens so I

took the mother and her surviving baby home to recover.

A few weeks later, the mother cat was spayed and relo-cated. The kitten, named Stormy, took some time to

recover but eventually grew into a fat, happy girl and is now living in her forever home.

Unfortunately, not all kittens have a good ending. Friends of Felines’ mission is to trap/spay/neuter/

vaccinate/return feral cats so kittens like Stormy won’t be born in storm drains and risk death on a daily basis.

I’m Penny, a 5-year-old Mahogany Neapolitan Mastiff who has never

known a home that was fully prepared for or under-

standing of my breed. Now I am desperately

looking for a place where I can settle in with all the

love, respect, and direction I deserve! I am searching for an owner who is famil-iar with dominant breeds and who can calmly and consistently set limits so that I know what is ex-

pected of me. I am natu-rally well behaved, walking

politely on a leash and not engaging in destructive behav-ior. I cannot go to a home with children. I also should not

go to a home with elderly, disabled, or small fragile dogs as my size alone poses an undue threat. I am good with other dogs of equal or larger size, and I do not show any signs of alpha or alpha-seeking behavior during my play. I will need

a home with a sturdy fenced-in yard, preferably 6 feet or taller. I also need a family who understands that Mastiffs can be resource (food, water, toys, bones) protective, and

can commit to giving me my own space (preferably a crate) in which to eat, sleep, and enjoy a good chew toy away from the rest of the family when I need to. I would make

the perfect partner to take on regular walks and social out-ings! If you are interested in me and would like to find out

more, go to www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues. If you need an application mailed or

faxed, please call 910-264-8300 to have one sent.

This is just my second day at the shelter! I’m

a bit bewildered by the new sights and

sounds, but I’m being a brave girl and am so friendly to every new person I meet.

My name is Squiggy and I’m an 18-month-old Beagle mix girl.

As you can see from my photo, I have a

wonderfully laid-back temperament and I love to be petted. I also love to go for walks and was so happy to go for a

stroll while they took my photo. I’m great on a leash and am also spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Oh yes, you’ll find that I’m a perfect size - not too small or

too large. I hope you’ll come visit and get to know me! For driving directions or questions about the adoption

process, please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022.

I am sponsored by George, Brenda and John Harriss in loving memory of Miss Scarlett, Rosie Belle, Candy

and Lady, special friends, all.

Shelter News & Events

Foster Homes Desperately Needed! Pender County Animal Shelter, which houses dogs taken in by Pender County Animal Control, is in need of help. Says Darlene Clewis, shelter manager, “We need foster homes desperately. Adopt-An-ANGEL has been helping the shelter since January and has adopted out over 30 dogs already. Your new foster dog or puppy can go through Adopt-An ANGEL and get vetted, then the new foster parent can take his or her foster dog or puppy to Petco on Saturdays and Sundays to find a permanent home.” Call 910-279-3196 to offer help.

Announcing the AMERICANA group! That’s right - the new group of shelter dogs enrolled in the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program are five true Yankee Doodle Dandies! Named after their favorite state in the nation, these shelter dogs represent the American Dream of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in a forever home. At least, that’s the canine version! To help them obtain their dream, fill out an application at www.montyshome.org or call 910-297-1338.

Donations Needed for Rescued Dogs Undergoing Heartworm Treatment Currently, Adopt-An-ANGEL (AAA) has 30 dogs undergoing heartworm treatment at the same time! Even at non-profit discounted rates, the treatment runs between $250-500 per dog depending on each dog’s weight. With 22 dogs going through treatment at the same time, it will cost the organization between $7,500 to $10,000 - which is disastrous for a small rescue. If a lot of people help a little, the expense will be much more manageable. If you would like to pitch in, please mail checks to: Adopt-An-ANGEL, P.O. Box 15095, Wilmington, NC 28408 or visit www.adoptanangel.net. Vet bills are online for you to review at "our vet bills" under the "about us" tab. Call 910-392-0557 for other questions.

Puppies and Kittens Need Your Help! Adopt-An-ANGEL (AAA) is seeking foster homes for young kittens and puppies. AAA will pay for vetting if you provide transportation, food, room and board. AAA is also providing a limited number of vouchers to Brunswick residents for spay/neuter surgeries for dogs to help curb the amount of puppies entering the shelters. Please call 910-392-0557 if you would like to foster and save the lives of puppies or kittens or for more info on the Brunswick dog voucher program.

FREE Spay/Neuter Surgeries “Friends of the Pender Animal Shelter” has set up an account with $2,000 at Cape Fear Spay/Neuter Clinic in Castle Hayne to pay 100% for spay/neuters of all animals adopted from the Pender County Animal Shelter. Proof of adoption from the Pender Animal Shelter is required to qualify for the free spay/neuter. New owners must set up appointments by calling Cape Fear Spay/Neuter Clinic at 910-602-1101 and check to make sure funds are still in the account. This offer is available as long as funds are available. For more information, please call Gayle Childress at 910-619-7713.

Blueberry Festival Arrives in Burgaw Visit the Monty’s Home booth at the Blueberry Festival held at the Bur-gaw Courthouse Square. The event will take place on Saturday, June 18th from 9am to 6pm. Monty’s Home will have Blueberry doggie bandannas as well as a huge “Party with your Pooch” raffle. There will be lots of other fun stuff for sale. Please leave your pups at home, though. There is lots to do and lots of fun for people, but it would be an over-heated, long day for canines. For more information, visit www.ncblueberryfestival.com or www.montyshome.org.

Be a Part of the Cape Fear Dragon Boat Festival - Saturday, June 4 The first annual Cape Fear Dragon Boat Festival comes to Wilmington on Saturday, June 4. The event will be held downtown on the Cape Fear River. The beneficiaries for the event are Step Up For Soldiers and Sunburst Founda-tion. Funds raised from this event will also be going to-ward medical care programs that Sunburst Foundation has set up for Pender County Animal Control. Says Linda Ferrell, founder of Sunburst Foundation, “We are hoping to help the shelter by providing the animals necessary medical care and spay/neuter surgery prior to adoption. These pro-grams have been set up as well as a program for cats whose owners are in need of help with spay/neuter, through Rocky Point Vet. We are still waiting for the Pender County gov-ernment health department to officially put these programs into place. The owned cat program is in effect now but donations are desperately needed.” Sunburst Foundation also has its boat in the race for individuals who want to participate and are not yet signed on with a group or business. $50 can secure your seat on the Sunburst Foundation boat and give you the golden op-portunity to make a difference in the lives of discarded and unwanted cats and dogs. For more information on the event, please visit www.capefeardragonboat.com or email [email protected] if you can volunteer some time for the animals that day. More information can also be found at www.sunburstfoundationofwilmington.org.

How about a wink and a kiss? My name is Mini Moo because

my markings look like a milk cow, although I’m much prettier. I am a 2½-year-old spayed

female with lots of love and energy. I would

prefer to live inside be-cause I have very short hair and get cold easily. I am house-trained and

like my crate, I know several commands (sit, down and come) plus

I’m great on a leash. I love to play ball and enjoy long walks. My only fault is that I don’t always like other dogs or cats. That’s how I lost my first home, I didn’t play well

with the other dogs. My foster home has lots of other dogs, too - so I don’t have the freedom I need and de-

serve. I am looking for an active home where I can be the only pet. Please call Amy at 910-253-0501 for more infor-

mation or to set up a time to meet me.

I am sponsored by Francesca Slaughter in loving memory of Casper and Lucy.

Don’t you think I’m pretty? My name is Louise and I’m a

Chihuahua mix with a friendly and loving per-sonality. I was dropped off at the Sheriff’s De-partment in Brunswick

County with my daughter, Thelma. (You can see her photo and story on

page 21.) At first, every-one thought we were

strays, but then someone recognized us as once being part of a puppy mill. Needless to say, we’re glad we’re at Paw’s Place where we can find loving families! I’m a 2½-year-old sweetheart who is house-trained and leash-trained. I love people and enjoy being held. I also love other dogs, big or small. There’s a Coonhound at the shelter named Trooper who I follow around like a little shadow. He lets me walk all over him. Do you have a dog who might like a friend? Or perhaps you don’t yet have a dog and want to get started with me? If so, give me a call! The number is 910-845-

7297. My friends here can tell you even more.

I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

I’ve Been Waiting Two Years for a

Home! Please Adopt Me!

Hello! I’m Lola and I’m a very sweet girl who

adores people. I’m a 4-year-old Shep-herd/Lab mix and

all I want is to please and be loved. So why haven’t I been

adopted? Could it be because I have

a special need? Please don’t let

that deter you from bringing a great girl like me home! I have an old cruciate ligament injury which requires me to stay on glucosamine chondroiton for my lifetime, but it’s an inexpensive pill and easily available. I’m not so fond of other female dogs, but I interact very well with larger, docile male dogs. I’m behav-ing beautifully at a dog boarding facility and working with a

trainer as well! If you have an interest in adopting me, please call today! Or, if you’re not able to adopt at this

time but would like to foster me temporarily, that would be great! I’d really love to get back in a home environment. Just call Sunburst Foundation at 910-622-0011or email

them at [email protected].

I am sponsored by Hank and Grace Harrington. Thank you!

Looking for a playful and friendly

companion for yourself or your family? You’re

looking at the right dog for the job! My

name is Ace and I’m a 2 to 3-year-old male

Black Lab mix. Everyone who meets me falls in love, and that’s the absolute

truth! I have an affectionate

personality and a happy demeanor. I am already house-trained and leash-

trained and I’m neutered, up to date on shots and on heartworm prevention. I get along well with other dogs and enjoy playing with my canine buddies at the shelter. Being with humans is my most favorite pastime, though. I love to

go for walks with the volunteers - we head outside and explore the grounds around the shelter. If you adopt me, I’m sure we could have some peaceful walks in our very

own neighborhood. Doesn’t it sound like I’m well prepared to be a great family companion? Let me prove it to you -

take me home today! For driving directions or more information, please call Pender County Humane Society at

910-259-7022.

I am sponsored by Ginger in memory of Molly and our long walks in the Ravine.

Hello my name is Blue. That name came to me because of

my icy blue eyes, I think. I am an Austra-lian Shepherd

and Border Collie mix and was surren-

dered to Duplin County Animal

Control be-cause I some-times chased cats. Mind

you, I never wanted to hurt one, but I did like to chase them sometimes. My former owner’s neighbor threatened to kill me for chasing cats, so I found myself at a shelter. That was a really scary place and I had run out of time. Luckily, I found a good foster home in Southport where I

currently live with three other dogs. I am told I have a very sweet and gentle disposition, but I do like to be the center of attention. I am a spayed girl, about 3½-years-old. I am healthy, and current on all my vaccinations. I need to lose a few pounds, so an active household would be very good for me. If you are interested in me or would like more info on other dogs currently available for adoption, please visit the Carolina Border Collie Rescue website at CBCR.org or

call 919-682-6125.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in memory of Dingo.

Check out these gor-

geous brown eyes! That’s not how I got

the name Hawkeye,

but they sure do add to my soft, friendly face, don’t they? I am the only one left from the MASH group that gradu-ated last month from the Monty’s Home Pawsitive Part-

ners Prison Program. Seems they saved the best for last! I know all my basic obedience commands and love peo-ple, other dogs and children. Chasing a tennis ball is my favorite game! I am about a year old and mostly Lab, but perhaps some Shepherd or Collie because of these really

cool ears I have. See the big smile that is to win you over...did it work? I really want a family to call my own, I

was in the shelter and then in training for such a very long time. If you would like me for part of your troop, please

call 910-297-1338 or [email protected]. Better yet, fill out an application at www.montyshome.org and I’ll

have one of my human friends call you.

PENDER ENDANGERED ANIMAL RESCUE

Hello! My name is Knucklehead and I am looking for some love. I’m a 1-year-old Pit Bull/Shar Pei mix who likes long walks and sloppy kisses. I had a lot of

brothers and sisters who came with me to the kennels and are now in loving homes. I am left all alone and need to find someone to take me in. I have a big heart, a friendly smile, and I get along with other dogs. I’m crate-trained, too! I’m also neutered, up to date on shots and on heart-

worm prevention. Just give me a chance - you’ll fall in love! To adopt me, email PEAR at [email protected] or

call 910-675-0867.

Black Dog Syndrome. Did you know black dogs in shelters are

the least likely to be adopted and the most likely to be euthanized? Black cats face similar difficulties in finding loving homes. Black dogs and cats are just as loving as any other pet. Please con-

sider adopting me. Not because of my color, but because I am a terrific, happy, 8-month old pup named Herman who will stick by you for life. I am a neutered Labradorable mix who is current on vaccinations and called a doll baby by

those who know me. We could have great fun together but you must call Denise at 910-862-1728. You can also visit A

CAROLINA ANIMAL PROTECTON SOCIETY

My name is Sir Galahad. I will be your knight in shining armor

if you will give me a chance. I am 1-year-old, up to date on all of my shots, and neutered. I have soft white fur and beautiful eyes. I

love to play and sometimes get a little carried away. I'm not ag-

gressive but I do play a little rough (so no little children please). I was left behind in a housing development and I was very scared. I wandered house to house until a nice lady rescued me. She called CAPS and they took me in. I enjoy hanging out on the sofa with my foster family and

sleeping next to them at night. I like being scratched around my neck and head and I get along with other cats. I would love a family with lots of love and a forever home.

My name is Drako and I'm so happy because I'm attending dog training classes at Petsmart and learning all

kinds of commands. I can be adopted now and then my new parents can con-

tinue to take me to my classes at no charge. I love to play with my toys but I'm not too good at sharing them or my

food - if these things aren't around, then I get along with other dogs. I'm actually

in a home with other dogs and children and I'm doing just fine. I'm vaccinated, heartworm free, neutered and crate-trained. My foster mom said that a fence is a must! I'm Border Collie/Lab and I have a lot of energy and need to

have space to run it off. Please adopt me and continue my training. I'm sure that I'll be the best dog that you would

ever imagine. Contact Pat at [email protected] or 910-640-1505 and make arrangements for us to meet.

CAPE FEAR HOUSE RABBIT SOCIETY

PHOENIX LANDING FOUNDATION

My name is Charlie. I am a mature (mid-thirties) male Blue and Gold Macaw. I am told that I have great manners. I am vocal

in the morning but rarely scream; I am generally a very quiet bird. My favorite spot is a tree perch on the screened-in porch; I love to watch the squirrels and other birds outside. I will step up onto a perch or hand but really prefer not to be

handled much. My favorite foods are chopped raw veggies, fruits, eggs, grains and some pel-leted food. I am looking for that perfect person who will care for me and treat me with the dignity and respect to

which I am accustomed. To adopt me or to learn about the many parrots of all species who are awaiting homes,

OPERATION TOPCAT

My name is Rojo (in Spanish it means “red”).

My coat is a beautiful shade of dark orange, almost red. I'm a very sweet long-haired boy

who is about 3-years-old. I am shy but if you are

patient with me, I will learn to trust you. I’m pretty laid back and don’t mind other cats. I love to have my belly rubbed. I am neutered and current on vaccinations. Won't you find it in your heart to give me a loving forever home? I would

pay you back with a ton of love. For more information, please email [email protected] or call 910-200-0612.

You may also visit www.petfinder.com/shelters/NC250.html to see other kitties up for adoption.

My name is Penny and I am looking for a new home after being abandoned in a filthy

apartment. I am a curious little girl by nature, and like to be right in the middle of the ac-

tion. I prefer to be right where you are and will bug you until you let me out of my pen for my daily exercise. The more

attention the better. I love being petted and don’t mind being held. Dogs terrify me, so my new home will need to be dog-free. Because I am nervous until I get to know you, I do not do well with children. I weigh about 4 pounds and I’m spayed and litter-trained. For info on how to adopt me, please contact Cape Fear House Rabbit Society by calling 910-471-7854 or emailing [email protected]. You can also visit www.capefearrabbits.org for more details.

ONSLOW PARTNERS FOR ANIMAL WELFARE

My name is Chloe. I am a 1-year-old Boxer and English

Bulldog mix. I’m 45 pounds, spayed and current on all shots. I am living with my foster mom

who felt very bad for me and the conditions in which I was living. I was kept outside on a chain

and was very skinny as I usually was not fed or given water.

While out on this chain, I came into heat and became pregnant. I had my puppies outside in the cold, and since my owners didn't want them either,

they let them stay outside until they died. I am such a sweet little girl who has had such a rough start in life. If you can give me the loving, forever home that I deserve, please contact Onslow County Partners for Animal Welfare at 484-883-3552. Please go www.oc-paw.com to see many more

photos and even a video of me.

Hi, I'm Gracie and I'm a small light gray Tabby who is looking for my forever home. I'm a

1-year-old, sweet and playful girl who is

spayed, up to date on shots and tested nega-tive for FIV and Feline Leukemia. I'm a little

shy when you first meet me, but it won't take long for me to feel right at home with you. I get along with everyone: men, women, other cats and even dogs. I'm a busy girl (always playing). I get up in the lap of my foster parents for a while and then I'm off to play some more. Will that fit into your schedule? Call 910-271-3101 for more info about me.

Wake a girl up from a nap and this is the kind

of picture you’re gonna get! My name is Panda and I’m a 4 to

5-year-old girl. I have two differ-

ent colored eyes: one is

blue and one is green. It’s

really quite a striking feature. I am good with kids, dogs and other cats, I’ve been spayed, I tested negative for Feline Leu-kemia/FIV, I’m current on all of my vaccinations, and I like being held. I was taken in by Pender County Animal Control and be-cause I needed to have my teeth worked on, they con-

tacted Furever Friends. I have since had my teeth cleaned and bad ones removed so I’m good as new. I have no

problems eating dry, crunchy cat food so no worries there! I’m a loving, friendly, social feline companion who needs a

loving family. For more info or to adopt me, please call Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910-383-2100 (Monday

through Saturday between 8am-6pm).

HELP! I have been here at the shelter for quite awhile

and since my time is ticking away, I really

need someone to come save me. If you are a family looking to adopt a great

family dog then, I’m your guy! My name

is Duke (A248781) and I’m a 7-month-old Border Col-lie mix. I was surrendered to Animal Control by my owner. I’m sweet and

gentle, social and friendly, and 100% Lap Dog. I’m eager to please, willing to learn and ready to enjoy a life full of

love and adventure. I’m playful, good with other dogs and have a current Rabies vaccination. Would you please love me forever? For more info on adopting me, contact New

Hanover County Animal Control Services at 910-798-7500.

I am sponsored in honor of Mary Lee Field and her unconditional love and compassion for animals.

MID-ATLANTIC GREAT DANE RESCUE LEAGUE

My name is Daisy Mae and I'm a 2-year-old girl. I am full of energy and love. I love to play with

toys and will de-stuff toys if given the chance.

I am a true leaner on people because I want to be next to you all the

time! I do require a fenced yard because I

have bounds of energy. I do have issues with

other dogs and would do best in a home with no other dogs. I pick and choose who I

like in the dog world so I would be best as an only dog. I am currently looking for a foster home or even better,

a home to call my own! For more info, please contact the NC Chapter Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League by calling Terri at 252-566-8934 or visiting www.magdrl.org.

We are Oscar and Stitch and we are still looking for our for-

ever homes. We are not giving up! We know that the right

home is out there. We have been life-long companions but do not need to be adopted to-

gether. We do, however, need to be adopted by a family who already has a dog as we need

that canine companionship. I’m Oscar, a handsome black

Schnauzer. I’m very smart and quick to learn new commands

and tricks. I’m also a very sweet dog and a little laid-back versus your average Schnau-zer. I pretty much only bark when the other dogs do or

when I greet you at the door. As for my buddy Stitch - he’s a cute, fun, energetic and excitable little dog. He abso-lutely loves having lots of soft toys and loves to parade

around with them in front of the other dogs. He loves play-ing fetch, loves to give kisses and, if you give him the

chance, he will jump into your lap for a quick rub. He also loves to eat and gets very excited to the point of whining when it’s meal time. Occasionally he gets so excited he

will pee a little on the floor but other than that he is house-trained. He can be a little wimpy at times and doesn't en-joy being picked up a lot so any homes with small children

are probably not a great place for him. He is really a sweet little dog with lots of love to give. Both of us would be a delight to have in any home and would give all the

love and affection you could ask for! To adopt one or both of us, go to www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org.

There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues. If you need an application mailed or

faxed, please call 910-264-8300 to have one sent.

SCHNAUZER RESCUE OF THE CAROLINAS

CAROLINA BASSET HOUND RESCUE

Are you looking for a Basset who is a head above the rest? A semi-herculean hound, with eating and sleeping super powers? A gentle giant to be your constant compan-ion? To whistle while you work? To make you smile when times

are hard? To breathe new life into your Christmas card? Then let me talk to you a second. My name is Webster and I’ve got my sad story just like all these other

hounds. I’ve been in and out of halfway houses since I found myself homeless after my person became too sick to care for me. But I’m a doggy biscuit-canister half full kind

of guy and I know the right person is out there for me somewhere. I like groceries, long AND short walks on the beach or street, naps anywhere, washing dishes, and play-ing with an endless supply of toys. If you’re looking for an

on-again-off-again active hound, mid 6’s, with lots of love to give, then let’s do lunch, see where it goes. To make me a member of your family please call 919-708-4247 or visit our

website at www.cbhr.com

My name is Alice and I didn't fall down the rabbit hole. I was too scared to go near it. I am a shy,

scared little girl but these kind peo-ple here at CBHR are patient and kind, loving people. I am getting

showered with TLC to help me thru my anxieties. Are you kind and

patient? Do you want a beautiful active Basset Hound? Look no further, I am right here! To adopt me, please call

919-708-4247 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com

My name is Corky and I’m a beautiful, sweet and calm boy. I really love

being a "house hound". I am curious, smart, and love people. I get along

with dogs, large and small, and am house-trained and crate-trained. I’m learning to love treats and toys and gives kisses. All I want to do is please you so I can

get a lot of lovin’. I’m a beautiful white greyhound with a spot of brindle. Very adorable young man, wouldn’t you say? Please contact Barbara at 910-540-9644 for more info on adopting me. You can view other greyhounds

looking for good homes at www.greyhoundfriends.com.

Hi there! My name is Freeway (CM3717) and I

was found wandering down I-40 when a nice person stopped to pick

me up before I got hurt or killed. How did such a

sweetheart like me wind up in such a dangerous situation? Now I’m wait-ing for a loving family to take me home and keep me safe forever. I’m a

2-year-old Walker Hound and I’ve been at the shel-ter since May 9. I hope you’ll come get me soon so we can enjoy the summer together! I’m very friendly to

humans and walk well on a leash. I also have gotten along just fine with the other dogs at the shelter. And I

sure do love a yummy treat now and then. So how about it? Could we be future best friends? To visit me, please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or

Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. They’ll be happy to give you driving directions or tell you even more!

I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!
