MARK’S MESSAGE July 13 marked the completion of my first year as interim at PIPC. It has been a busy and eventful year, and one that I professionally and personally cherish.

As has been true in the past, this congregation continues to enact a unique and pivotal role within the broader religious community addressing the most pressing human needs in our setting. This comes, I believe, as a direct result of, and response to, the di-vine encounter found in Jesus Christ. This encounter finds expression through the procla-mation of the word, worship and liturgy, music, education, care, outreach and service, and building of fellowship with each other. The crying needs of the world and of Paw-leys Island, as well as those within our own congregation, continue to be heard as the very voice of Jesus to whom we must respond. It is a privilege to share this calling with you!

One of the questions to be faced in this moment of time is how we balance the nurturing of our inner lives of faith and the external needs of a desperate world. That reality demands concrete answers as we budget for the coming year in a cycle of dimin-ishing financial resources and increasing expenses. Required of all of us will be formulat-ing the most creative ideas, a savvy use of resources, our personal investment of time, and greater commitment to active participation. And yes, we need your financial com-mitments more than ever.

As the summer comes to a close and new patterns and schedules are established for the fall, I encourage you to find a spot to grow and contribute and serve. Teaching and mentoring for our children and youth are always needed. Participating in leadership with its planning and detail work and implementation of events is something that new members and long-timers can do among our many teams. Participation in mission is available and you are needed.

Find a place that grabs your interests or won’t let go of your attention: volun-teer, join in, and discover Christ working in and through and right beside you!

Grace and peace,

MUSIC NOTES FROM

LANA

I am so proud of the many singers and instrumentalists who have sung and played during the summer months. I have heard so many wonderful compliments. I personally have really enjoyed working with the different groups. We are so fortunate to have so many talented people in our midst. Last week I was in Waco, Texas at Baylor University for the Alleluia Conference for my Professional Development. It is a huge conference / workshop on any item related to church music. There were some 30 well known clinicians/composers. I went to classes in handbells, arranging for instruments, music technology, children’s choir, and adult choir. I went to 10 different music reading sessions (one with orchestra) and daily worship. I am so thankful for this opportunity to learn and share new music and ideas. Thank you to Renee Windham. Renee is so gracious to substi-tute on Sunday for me when I am gone. She plays beautifully and knows the flow of the service. It makes it much easier for me to leave when I know that you are in good hands. Thank you again, Renee!

Special Music August 7 - Special flute solo by Gail Holsclaw, “Sleeper’s Wake” by Bach *FISH FRY and Concert on Sunday night, Au-gust 7 at 5:30 pm in Holsclaw Fellowship Center Aug. 14 - “Amazing Grace” - Paula Richardson on flute, Leigh Eddy on oboe, Renee Windham on piano, and Lana on organ Aug. 21 - Beth Wheeler (Daughter of Betty Lyon) on English horn The CHOIR is back singing “By Our Love” Aug. 28 - The beautiful Irish ballad “Holy Spirit, Living Breath of God”

FALL SCHEDULE

CHANCEL CHOIR Hasn’t the choir loft looked empty? I surely have missed the choir! Hopefully they have had a chance to sit with their spouses, experience worship from a different place in the sanctuary or talk with different people in the pews. Perhaps they have been on vacation, travelled, or visited another church. Rehearsals will begin on Wednesday night, August 10, at 6:00-7:30pm in the choir room. All are welcome, and it’s a wonderful time to join. Let me know if you plan on coming, and I will have a folder ready for you. We always need new voices. It’s a great way to get to know people and be a part of a small group.

HANDBELLS We are starting the season with a FULL choir! Hallelujah and amen! The first rehearsal will be on Monday, August 15, at 5:00 pm. Bells are scheduled to play in worship on Octo-ber 9, November 20, and the 7:00 Christmas Eve Commun-ion Service. If you are interested in playing bells, please con-tact me. I can put you on a substitute list and/or a waiting list.

CHILDREN’S CHOIRS This year we are going to have choir rotations during the Sunday evening J.A.M. programs for children. J.A.M. starts up on Sunday evening, September 11, from 5:30-7:30 pm. This will give me a chance to work with the preschool K4 and K5’s as well as the elementary children! PLEASE mark your calendars for October 2, November 11, and the 4:30 Christmas Eve Family service. Hopefully, the children will be singing and participating in worship on these days. Watch your newsletters and weekly E-News for more details.

Please remember your staff and your choirs as we prepare for meaningful worship each week. Grace and Peace, Lana Dr. Lana Stephens Pollard Director of Music Ministries Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church 9967 Ocean Highway Pawleys Island, SC 29585

The Christian Education Team meets the first Monday of each month at 7:00 PM in Founders Hall. They are responsible for Sunday school for all ages, the children’s program, children’s church, the youth program, nursery and the library. Four adult Sunday school classes are offered in Holsclaw Fellowship Center in Classrooms A, B, C and the library. We are blessed to have amazing adult Sunday school leaders. Each class offers a different study and they are always eager to welcome new members into their classroom. Children’s Sunday school for all ages is upstairs in the Adminis-trative Building. Energetic teachers are leading the children’s fun-packed lessons. Junior and Senior High students meet in Founders Hall focusing on studies that generate thought provoking conversations on the scriptures. Children’s Church is offered for our youngest churchgoers during the worship hour. Children gather in the Edu-cation Building immediately after the “Message for Young Disciples.” They worship in pews made especially for them while their adult leader provides a lesson, prayer and activities. Each Sunday night during the school year from 5:30-7:30 our J.A.M. ministry (Jesus and Me) welcomes children from our church, their friends and others in the community. In just two short hours, kids play games, learn music and instruments, participate in Bible lessons, and assemble amazing crafts. This is indeed an action packed two hours and they still find time to visit the library and participate in a bible bookworm-reading program graciously provided by the library volunteers. Some Sundays they take a break from their regular schedule to work on community projects such as visiting nursing homes, preparing food baskets for the hungry and making greeting cards. S.A.L.T. (Serving and Learning Together), PIPC’s program for 6th grade through High School meets each Sunday during the school year as well. As with our children’s ministry, S.A.L.T. welcomes PIPC members and their friends. They begin each Sunday with games, music and praise. After a group study they break into smaller groups for in depth re-flection with their small-group leaders. These teens also take some time out for community service through canned good drives, Samaritan’s Shoebox and many other ministries. Future plans for the youth include a Ski trip, Salkehatchie, Fun in the Son and Youth Sunday. The Christian Education Team is busy preparing for the fall season with J.A.M., S.A.L.T. Youth, Rally Day, Bless-ing of the Book Bags and many other events coordinated by the Team. The Christian Education Team is always looking for volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering on the Team, please contact Tommie Kennedy at [email protected].

The Mission Study Team has been working during the summer to fulfill its re-sponsibilities, so that PIPC may be able to move forward in the search for a permanent pastor. Our members have:

Received a written report from team members and as a group have ana-lyzed data regarding PIPC demographics. This includes attendance and membership data, as well as monetary contributions and budget data for the past ten years.

Received a written report about demographics for Georgetown County overall, and the Waccamaw Neck in particular, prepared by team mem-bers. This includes population data, racial makeup, and percentages of residents living below poverty levels and those lacking health care. It also includes information about new housing units currently under construction and those in planning stages for the Waccamaw Neck which may provide PIPC with potential new members.

Conducted interviews with 15-20 community leaders to learn their per-ceptions of PIPC and its role in the community. The same six ques-tions were asked of each person. Questions included ‘How do you think the community views PIPC?’ and ‘What challenges do you anticipate over the next 5 years in which PIPC can or should play a role in address-ing?’ Many of the interviews have been written up and discussed with the MST.

Additionally, MST members have prepared a questionnaire (see below) for PIPC members, and will provide multiple opportunities for the congrega-tion to respond. Questions ask members what drew them to PIPC in the first place, or what aspect of PIPC each likes best. Others include members’ thoughts about ways for PIPC to serve the congregation and the community to better meet future needs.

MST will be meeting twice monthly now to fulfill its responsibilities as part of the interim process. MST members are Charlie Bradshaw, Jill Fletcher, Fred Genther, Doug Holman, Gail Joley, Jean Monk, Brad Vesel-ick, and Renee Windham. We will continue to report to the congregation regularly to keep you informed on our progress.

Respectfully submitted, Gail Joley

to Elect Nominating Team The Session has called a Congregational meeting on August 28th after worship for the pur-pose of electing a Nominating Team. The Nominat-ing Team is responsible for nominating members to be elected as Elders, Deacons, and Trustees, and may have the responsibility to submit names to the congregation for election to a Pastor Nominating Team. The Session names two of its members to the Nominating Team, one serving as the chair. The Board of Deacons names one of its members to serve on the Team. Four at-large members of the congregation are suggested by the previous Nomi-nating Team, and after approval by the Session, these four names are provided to the congregation for election.

On Sunday, August 14th, we will receive the PADD (Presbyterian Agency for the Devel-opmentally Disabled) Offering during the wor-ship service.
