Paulding County Fair was first Ohio fair to use VLT money

The 2013 Paulding CountyFair in Paulding was the firstOhio fair to make use of videolottery terminal (VLT) moneyfor its harness racing program.

Racing begin on Wednes-day, June 12 with a seven-racecard. There were also four Trottingbred races on theWednesday program.

The two-day meet con-cluded on Thursday, June 13with nine harness races.

Pari-mutuel wagering was apart of each evening of enter-tainment.

In May, The Ohio HarnessHorsemen’s Association, theOhio State Racing Commis-

sion, OSRC Chairman BobSchmitz, and Mountaineer Gaming (Scioto Downs) haveapproved checks for $15,100each to the 65 Ohio countyfairs that conduct harness rac-ing.

These funds are from theOhio Harness Horsemen’sVLT funds, with $11,600slated to be used for the OhioFairs Fund races. When com-

bined with the Ohio FairsFund allocation of $1,354, the

base purse for the eight stakesraces is $2,804.

The remaining portion of the check ($3,500) is to beused for racing-related and

general operating expenses. If any of the races are can-

celed, these allocated fundsmust be returned to theOSRC, and the funding thatcame from the Ohio FairsFund must be returned to theOhio Department of Agricul-ture.

Per an agreement betweenthe Ohio Fair Managers Asso-ciation and the OHHA, the 29fairs that do not conduct har-ness racing will each receive$700. This allocation from theHorsemen’s VLT funds may

be used for general operatingexpenses at these fairs.
