2018 is set to be significant for women around the world. A growing awareness of women’s issues is sounding a call to action that is empowering women in the workplace, in government and in their public and private lives. Paul Wild has chosen the theme of the goddess in every woman to inspire its diverse and dynamic collection of gemstones in a range of colours, with a focus on blue, green and red hues seen in Pantone’s spring 2018 fashion colour palette. The freedom of women to be themselves and to pursue their dreams is playing out in evolving ideals of femininity and how women express that in their personal style.

“Every woman should feel like a goddess and every goddess has her own unique qualities, talents and strengths to celebrate,” says CEO Markus Paul Wild. “What was empowering to us in selecting this theme was to create designs that were graceful yet bold, that explore different shades and shapes in gemstones like tanzanite, emerald, and various tourmalines and spinels. The magnetic energy of passion and purpose that is the goddess in every woman draws people in. That is what we strive to inspire in our colourful gemstone layouts.” Colour continues to be a key influencer of fashion trends for spring 2018. For the first time in the 23 years since Pantone be-gan identifying its top 10 hues, the Pantone Color Institute announced 16 colours for the season, which Wild says bodes well for the colour variations and combinations it inspires for gemstone jewellery designers.

Dramatic, warm and eye catching, red is the colour of passion, desire, romance and love. Emotional and intense, red is energising and motivates us to action. It increases the pulse and heart rate and boosts metabolism. Forming the outer arc of the rainbow, red signifies a pioneer-ing spirit, inspiring courage and strength. Envisioning images of jewels befitting the goddess of love and passion, Aphrodite, Paul Wild has created layouts featuring red and pink spinels from Tanzania. Most notable is a set of nine heart-shaped red spinels totalling more than 112 carats; a flower-inspired earring layout with 80 mauve spinels weighing over 21 carats with two tanzanites totalling 9.78 carats; and two single red spinels: a 17.15-carat marquise-cut spinel and 11.67-car-at heart-shaped spinel.

“Spinel has an immense range of shades, from purple to violet and mauve to pure red,” explains Markus Wild, who notes that spinels in sizes over 5 carats are rare on the market. “We have single stones and sets in captivating red, but also layouts in the softer shades of violet and mauve. We love spinel because of its intense luminescence. Its brilliance, even in more muted colours, adds a lot of beauty and sophistication to a design.”

Blue is the colour of the sea and the sky. It is associated with open spaces, freedom, imagi-nation and inspiration. Blue represents trust, loyalty, wisdom, stability, truth and faith. The colour blue is fundamentally important to the human eye as a stable icon of the balance in our universe. Even in an uncertain world, we remember that the blue skies represent constancy, as they’ve never fallen! Summoning images of jewels befitting Amphitrite, goddess of the sea, Paul Wild has created stunning tanzanite layouts in colours from cool lilac blue to deep violet blue and in a mix of shapes. One of the most notable storyboards in this colour is an outstanding 31-piece necklace, earring and ring suite of natural tanzanite totalling nearly 252 carats. Equally tantalising is a four-row tanzanite and rubellite wave bracelet layout composed of 78 pieces totalling nearly 144 carats; tanzanite and red spinel chandelier earrings totalling 51 carats; and an 82-carat cush-ion-cut tanzanite cabochon that awaits to be transformed into a magical creation.

“Sapphire is limited in big sizes and in quantity for layouts. In this case, tanzanite is the winner,” says Markus Wild. “The combination with red in the use of rubellite is a connection to the three classic colours we are highlighting for the season.” One mine in Tanzania, providing a good supply of this popular gem. In the Pantone palette for spring, blue is represented in a navy Sailor Blue and a sky blue Little Boy Blue. Furthermore, the Pantone Colour of the Year, Ultra Violet, is a blue-based purple.

Refreshing and revitalising, green symbolises new beginnings. It is the colour of life, renewal and energy, associated with growth, harmony and the environment. An emotionally positive colour with great healing power, green is nurturing and generous, calm and balanced. The more submerged people are in modern life, the greater their desire to immerse themselves in the phys-ical beauty of and our inherent unity with nature. A life-affirming shade, green is emblematic of vitality and the pursuit of one’s passions.

Imagining the jewels that might adorn the earth goddess Artemis, Paul Wild has designed a bold, organic bib-style necklace layout featuring 208 Zambian emerald cabochons and nine faceted pink tourmalines totalling nearly 358 carats; and a multi-row organic bracelet layout of 113 Zambian emerald cabochons weighing nearly 315 carats with a 25.65-carat rubellite. Such a stunning collection of emeralds is unusual to find. In the Pantone palette for spring, green is reflected in Arcadia, described as sweet green perfection! This blue-green colour is a cross between an emerald green and a mint green.

Inventive and imaginative, Ultra Violet is Pantone’s 2018 Colour of the Year. As Pantone describes, Ultra Violet is complex and contemplative. This blue-based purple suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible. Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The colour is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over- stimulated world. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energises the communities that gather there and inspire connection.

In the Pantone palette are lighter shades in this colour range — Spring Crocus and Pink Lavender. In this spectrum of hues, Paul Wild has brought together outstanding sapphire and amethyst layouts. A bold, daring necklace and earring layout featuring amethyst cabochon and navette-cut stones totalling nearly 190 carats with a 139-carat amethyst carved rose pendant exudes romance and femininity. Reflecting vintage flair is a 47-piece old-cut amethyst and morganite suite totalling over 189 carats designed in cascading gem collar and earrings with ring stone. Also goddess worthy, a glorious bib-style necklace and chandelier earring suite composed of 460 briolette-cut sapphires from Madagascar in shades from pink to violet, totalling nearly 175 carats; and bold earring set topped with two sapphires weighing nearly 56 carats and dangling 74 sapphires totalling over 48 carats.

Paraiba tourmaline has become Paul Wild’s worldwide star and flagship gem for its breath-takingly unparalleled colours. With mines in Brazil and Africa, Paul Wild is able to bring to market a stunning selection of Paraiba tourmaline.

“Each location boasts its own personality,” describes CEO Markus Wild. “Paraiba from Brazil is more often found in electric tropical blue hues, with sizes over 5 carats very rare, while Paraiba from Mozambique has more of a sky blue colour with stones over 5 carats not uncommon, and cleaner with fewer inclusions. Moreover, the Brazilian material comes in a wider range of shades including fuchsia and violet with a broad range of blues and greens.”

Earrings are considered the go-to statement-makers on the runways and red carpets, especially bold dangling and drop styles that frame the face with beautiful colour. Innovative earrings are well represented in the storyboards Paul Wild arranges to inspire creative jewellery design. Among the most notable presentations is a fanciful suite of three earring sets arranged with different shapes and hues of gems including tanzanite and tsavorite, and various colours of tourmalines: a pair of tanzanite ovals totalling over 23 carats with 34 dangling pieces (31 carats) of tanzanite, tsavorite and chrome tourmaline; a pair of red tourmaline ovals totalling nearly 16 carats with 30 dangling pieces (23 carats) of spinels and red tourmalines; and a pair of brown tourmaline ovals totalling over 27 carats with 28 dangling pieces (34 carats) of fancy tourmalines.
