“the idea and philosophy behind my work is to produce objects that look as if they

have happened, as if by a natural process - objects that have been discovered rather

than made. nature does such wonderful things with materials.”

the precision and control over form in the work of paul philp comes directly

from his method of working the clay slowly by hand. he very carefully builds up

the shape, whether organic or geometric, piece by piece, not by coil and without

armatures. the vessels are finely carved inside out - scraping the surfaces using

italian plaster workers ’ tools, steel ‘ribs ’, homemade steel, homemade wooden

tools, and industrial metal saw blades.

the varied texture is an important contrast to the precision of form in his work.

such opposition is inherent in the mixture of materials into his clay: almost 50%

rough sand, to prevent distortion, and hard components, such as crushed fire brick,

to inhibit cracking during firing, because paul often fires his work, up to seven

times, at very high temperatures - any hotter and they would melt. color is added as

part of the multiple firing process.

paul uses many inventive strategies to achieve variation in his work. in burning

different materials out of his work, leaving fissures, he discovered that at high

temperatures insulation material - high in cement and wood ash - turns to glass.

this creates drips of ‘glaze,’ born from the crags in his surface.

he challenges himself to vary from straighted to organic forms. clay has natural

strength when bending, but, paul often works against this with vertical walls and

angular forms. certainly unorthodox, as a self- taught artisan, paul in many cases

works in opposition to the established techniques in ceramics.
