Dear Parents,

All voters in Utica Community Schools will be asked to reauthorize the district’s non-homestead millage at the general election on Tuesday, November 4, 2014. The proposal is a renewal of the district’s currently authorized non-homestead millage. The non-homestead millage is limited to rental, industrial and commercial properties. It has ZERO impact on owner-occupied homes. For additional information, you may click on the picture link included below.

November gives the team of parent, teacher and student the time to talk and evaluate a student’s performance and to discuss strategies to further the student’s success. Making your conference time a valued experience may be accomplished by providing the teacher with a couple of questions of things you would like to discuss prior to your scheduled appointment. It is an expectation that we meet with every parent. Please keep your scheduled appointment.

The students have a half-day of school on Thursday, November 13. Dismissal will be at 11:30 AM.

The student body will be participating in charitable activities for the upcoming holiday season. We will collect non-perishable foods supporting the Kiwanis. We also will decorate a holiday tree with giving items. This activity benefits the Basket Project. Mrs. Grace and Mrs. Vedder will continue with their annual projects (Santarrific, Blankets for the American Cancer Society). Details will be coming home soon.

In accordance with school policy, everyone MUST report to the office upon arrival. Visitor badges are provided in

the office. All visitors MUST wear a badge when entering the school. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

QUICK FACTS The Non-Homestead Millage Renewal

…is a reauthorization of an existing millage that is restricted to rental, commercial and industrial properties within Utica Community Schools.

…is not levied on owner-occupied homes and has ZERO impact on the homeowner’s property taxes.

…supports school operations, including teachers, basic school supplies and utilities such as heat and water.

…will help maintain current academic programs that support the district’s goal of high student achievement.

Early Arrivals/Late Arrivals/Early Dismissals

Student supervision is a shared responsibility between parents and school personnel. Children are to arrive at school no earlier than 8:10 a.m.

If your child must come to school early, please take advantage of the School Age Child Care (SACC) available at our building. When arriving late to school, children must check in at the main

office.

We understand some appointments need to be made during the school day. Please allow extra time to your schedule to pick up your children. We will call your children out of class when you arrive at school. It is important your children stay in class for as much of the academics as they can.

Recess

Fresh air and exercise have been proven to aid in the physical and educational growth of children. Students go out for recess during the lunch hour, as well as in the afternoon. It is important that children wear sufficient clothing, as well as shoes, as they are expected to go outdoors each recess.

Generally, if your child is well enough to come to school, he/she is expected to go outside. Students will remain inside if the weather is inclement. Many factors are used to determine outdoor recess, some of which are temperature, wind chill factor (below 10 degrees), and playground conditions.

Administration of Medication

Students sometimes need to take medication. Parents should administer medication to their children at home. In the event that is not possible, the school may administer either prescription or non-prescription medicine – but only when authorized by the

student’s parent/guardian and the child’s physician. Requests must be made by completing an Authorization for Medication form, available from the school office. The form must be signed by the

child’s physician.

Background Check for Volunteers

As part of its continuing effort to maintain the health, safety and welfare of students, UCS requires all volunteers to fill out a criminal background check.

If you or any family member plan on attending any field trips or class parties, the criminal background check must be completed and on file in our office.

If articles of your child’s clothing have disappeared or a pair of shoes is missing, you may be able to find them in our Lost and Found.

Missing Items Starting to Accumulate

If your child has lost anything, please have them look through the Lost and Found in the lobby. We have quite an assortment of items currently without an owner!

The practice of celebrating students (i.e. birthdays) is a tradition. If you plan to honor your child’s special day at school, please take the following under consideration:

1. * Many of our students have food allergies.

2. * Most of our classrooms are “peanut safe.”

3. * Many of our students are on restrictive diets (i.e. gluten-free, diabetic, vegan/vegetarian).

4. Cross contamination is the number one risk factor for exposure after ingestion.

In lieu of treats:

* A class book or game in your child’s name may be donated.

*A small gift bag of non-edibles (ie pencils, trinkets…) may be distributed.

*If a parent has the “special day” off of work, you may take your child to lunch or join your child for lunch in the cafeteria (if you don’t have sensitive ears!).

A.T.O.M. Update

A.T.O.M. got off to a great start of the year with a fun off-site learning experience to the Emagine Theater. We got to take a behind the scenes tour of how a movie studio works. It is that time of year again when the A.T.O.M. students will be hosting the annual Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF collection. Orange boxes came home with your students last week. These boxes could be taken

with the children as they Trick-or-Treated or the children could collect donations at other times. The money raised goes to help feed and take care of children in 3rd world countries. All boxes are due back to school by Friday, November 7th. Thanks for your support.

Student Council Begins Discussions

In the past month, the Student Council had their first meeting. Our whole group met and we discussed adding a discussion box to each classroom. We also talked about how important it was to attend each meeting. This past month we also had our first Spirit Day; MSU vs U of M Day was a big success! Many students showed support for their favorite team. This year the Student Council will have two service projects during the holiday season. The first is the 4th

Annual Giving Tree to support The Basket Project, and the second is a food drive for the Kiwanis Club. Look for more detailed information to come home in back packs soon. Thank you in advance for all your support. Madeline Balog Student Council Secretary Mrs. McKenna

Please remember to remain in your car in the drop-off lane and let your children exit the car. Please have your children exit the car from the passenger side for safety. In addition, please remember to keep the handicap parking spaces available for those who require them and that the subdivision streets have a 25 mile an hour speed limit. Our neighbors are

expressing concern.

Please remember the right lane is for pick-up only and right turns into the designated pick-up lane. Please remain in your car and once your children have safely entered, proceed on through the outer isle to exit the parking lot. The left lane entering the school driveway is for left turns to exit school and for right turns to the

main parking lot.

Annual Trunk ‘N’ Treat Event The Trunk ‘N’ Treat committee would like to thank all the families that made this year’s event a spectacular one! Every year we enjoy putting together a theme, and this year we turned Messmore Elementary into an Egyptian Theme. We had some very tough competition with creative trunks. Our winner for “Best Trunk” went to the Ben Jackson and his family for their amazing “Ninja Turtles” trunk. The “Best Boy Costume” winner was John Dreyer who came as “Emmet” from the Lego movie and the “Best Girl Costume” was Renee Cilluffo as a “Slurpee Cup”. Great costumes were displayed by all of our great students! I would also like to thank all our volunteers for all their hard work and creativity for an evening of fun games, music, movie, and Trunk ‘N’ Treating. I could not have done this event without them. This year’s volunteers were: Katie and Steve Cole, Jill Kapeluch, Nicole Waske, Heather and Joel Cambare, Erica Khami, Emily Pirozzo, Renee Calado, Kozeta Elzhenni, Megan Simon, Laura Velasco, Jack & Carolyn Hartigan, Mrs. McKenna, Marash Hasanaj (Head Custodian), Mrs. Rymsza, Jasmine Dailey, Mrs. Dailey and our Principal, Mr. Zott. I would also like to thank Kozeta Elzhenni and Mrs. Hartigan for rounding up all of the student volunteers to help run the games and Kelly Bisaro who donated her time to paint the nails for the girls.

Silent Auction Blanket Sale for American Cancer Society

We are working so hard making beautiful fleece blankets for a good cause. We recognize that Cancer is a terrible illness that robs so many families of happiness and, yes, a lot of the time it robs them of their very lives. We did not want to sit on the sidelines and simply do nothing. That is why in Room 9, Mrs. Grace’s class has decided to make beautiful fleece blankets to sell in our Silent Blanket Auction. Each student has purchased the necessary materials and we then make the blankets together in class. A lot of love and care for those less fortunate goes into the making of

each blanket. All of the proceeds go directly to the American Cancer Society. We are hopeful that you will help us in our cause to find a cure, and offer assistance to families fighting the battle of Cancer. The blankets will be on display in our school lobby through November 14th. Please place your bid on your favorite blanket before this date, then wait for a phone call letting you know that you won! Thank you in advance for helping us to help others.
