†APOSTLES’ CREED (IN UNISON) Bobby Hulme-Lippert

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

WE GIVE THANKS TO GOD PRESENTATION OF TITHES, OFFERINGS, AND GIFTS

On the first Sunday of each month, in addition to your tithe and regular giving, we receive our Mercy Offering.

Half of this offering will go to “Five Cents Per Meal” and half to the “Loaves and Fishes” Fund.

ANTHEM

Christ Hath a Garden Gerald Near, b. 1942

Christ hath a garden walled around, A paradise of fruitful ground, Chosen by love and fenced by grace From out the world's wide wilderness. Like trees of spice his servants stand, There planted by his mighty hand; By Eden's gracious streams, that flow To feed their beauty where they grow. Awake, O wind of heav'n and bear Their sweetest perfume through the air: Stir up, O south, the boughs that bloom, Till the beloved Master come: That he may come, and linger yet Among the trees that he hath set; That he may evermore be seen To walk amid the springing green. —text by Isaac Watts, 1674-1748

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. WORSHIP NOTES

Hearing Aids and Large-Print Hymnals are available from the ushers.

As one body of Christ, composed of diverse individuals bound together by the Holy Spirit:

We will join in community across the generational, ethnic, racial, and economic barriers that separate God’s children. We will walk together in a manner worthy of the calling to which we have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. - from our 2012 Vision Statement

Children and Families Are Always Welcome at GCPC! We know all kids can be wiggly and noisy. It’s okay! We’re glad that you and they are here. Please feel free to sit anywhere: up front where they can see; in the balcony where there is room to move around; or wherever is most convenient for you. Worship Bags and Binders are available in the narthex. Ask an usher or greeter! Children under 6 are welcome at any time for childcare in room 102. Our excellent nursery is in room 103 across from the Social Room.

Music Notes

Success came early to child prodigy Franz Liszt (1811-1886), who traveled to Vienna and Paris and became one of the greatest virtuosos of the century. Liszt’s organ compositions are conventionally divided into two categories: original organ pieces and versions for organ made or revised by Liszt of his own compositions. Adagio in D flat Major is a transcription by Liszt of one of his Consolation piano pieces—a collection of six solo piano works which take the musical style of Nocturnes.

Gerald Near (b. 1942) is considered one of the finest composers of church music writing today. Near’s music appears in numerous church and college choral libraries around the world. Christ Hath a Garden is a beautiful pairing of an English folksong O Waly, Waly, and a hymn text by Isaac Watts which appears in over fifty hymnals.

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was a German composer and influential music critic. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. Schumann composed his Four Sketches for the pedal-piano, a kind of piano that included a pedalboard, enabling bass notes to be played with the feet (like an organ). With the second sketch’s repeated chords, they do seem to reveal their origins as piano music, but they sound fine as organ pieces.

We are grateful to have you join in worship with us this morning. We are an historic Presbyterian church, having celebrated our centennial anniversary in 2015. God has been immensely faithful for over 100 years, and we are eager to step faithfully into the future God has for us! We continue for-ward by walking in light of our mission which was adopted in 2012: to train grateful disciples of Christ, by doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with our God. May you be blessed through worship and fellowship this morning.

Led by high school, ministry-minded Enablers, middle schoolers will foster a deeper understanding of the broader church.

Sunday Morning Prayer: The best way to start a Sunday morning, or any morning, is with prayer. Each Sunday morning at 9:15-9:30 in the Social Room, we have a time of prayer, and all are welcome to participate. It is a prayerful time when hearts are quieted and focused on God, joys and concerns are shared, and prayers are raised in word and in spirit. It is a special time of caring, friendship, and blessing; please come and pray with us.

GCPC Summer of 2016 Book Discussion: Gilead by Marilynne Robinson

If you are looking for a summer read, Pastor Bobby invites you to join him and read Gilead! It is a Pu-litzer Prize winning novel written by “Narrative Calvinist” (as Christianity Today has called her) Mari-lynne Robinson. She tells a story spanning three generations, from the Civil War to the 20th century. The story is told from the perspective of an aging preacher who is writing a letter to his seven-year old son in which he renders an account of his life. As Kirkus Reviews put it, the novel is “as big as a na-tion, as quiet as thought, and moving as prayer. Matchless and towering.” Once you read the novel (or even if you don’t make it all the way through!), you are invited to join in for an evening of light snacks, drinks, and hearty discussion and reflection on the novel. The discussion will take place on July 28 - location TBA.

Sunday School is held every Sunday from 9:45-10:30 a.m.

Presbyterians hold to certain essential tenants of the Christian faith. While we stand as sisters and

brothers with all who believe in and follow Jesus Christ, we do have some distinctions! These

distinctive tenants have anchored the way we understand and live out faith in this world. Join us

this summer as we take a fresh look at those anchors and the ways that they intersect with our

world today and inform how we are to live in these changing times. The class will meet weekly in

the Fellowship Hall. Class begins at 9:40 a.m.
