Scheduling a Semen Analysis at Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey

Infertility affects men and women equally about 30% of the time. For many men, low sperm count or poor sperm quality may be the reason or a compounding factor of their infertility. A semen analysis (SA) helps to determine the count and quality of sperm and is a critical step in the infertility work-up process. The professional and sensitive team at RMANJ’s Andrology Department is ready to schedule your semen analysis or sperm cryopreservation appointment.

Appointments must be scheduled directly with our Andrology Department at 973-656-2823.

Specimens may be collected in most RMANJ offices or at home if you prefer. However, based on individual cases you may be required to provide a sample in an RMANJ office. It’s important that the specimen is handled properly to ensure accurate results. If you’ve made an appointment and need to reschedule please call our office as soon as possible at 973-656-2823. It is necessary to refrain from ejaculating for two to five days prior to specimen collection.

The specimen should be obtained by masturbation. Interrupted intercourse is not an acceptable method of collection for infertility purposes. A sterile container must be used for collecting the specimen. You may obtain one from the office at no charge.

Contamination of the specimen should be minimized. Please follow these guidelines:• Wash your hands well prior to collecting the

specimen.• Prevent contaminating the container by

removing its lid just prior to ejaculation, and replacing it immediately after completing the collection. Avoid touching the inside of the container with your hands or penis, as this may contaminate the specimen.

Care must be taken to collect the entire specimen.

Specimens may be collected at home. These specimens must be delivered to the office within one hour of collection. Maintain the specimen at body temperature and carry it upright. It can be transported to the office in an inside pocket, close to the body. Do NOT refrigerate or heat the specimen.

Upon your arrival, you must provide a photo ID. In the event that the patient is dropping off a specimen for her partner, the partner’s photo ID must be on file. If the ID is not on file, the specimen will be rejected.

You will be given identification labels to place on your specimen. Any specimen that is not labeled properly will be rejected. Please deliver your specimen directly to laboratory personnel.
