8 CRIC Pathways to a degree at ANGLIA RUSKIN UNIVERSITY 2016/17

CRIC is your pathway to Anglia Ruskin University

Cambridge Ruskin International College (CRIC) is an Associated College of Anglia Ruskin University offering a modern and dynamic educational experience. The college is committed to providing educational pathways and support services in an environment that encourages you to achieve excellence in your studies.

Undergraduate pathwaysAn undergraduate pathway is a single course comprising four stages of study. When you successfully complete the pathway you will be awarded a Bachelor’s (Hons) degree from Anglia Ruskin University.

University Foundation

The University Foundation is Stage 1 of the undergraduate pathway.

The transition from high school to university is a big step, perhaps the most important in your life. Staff at CRIC understand this, and will provide you with ongoing guidance, support, and the knowledge and skills you need. It is this partnership between you and the staff that will make this transition a smooth one.

First Year Degree

The First Year Degree is Stage 2 of the undergraduate pathway. You may qualify to go directly into Stage 2, depending on your qualifications. You will experience the first-year curriculum of an Anglia Ruskin University degree and with extra academic contact hours. The teaching and learning experience will enable you to fully develop your knowledge and understanding of each module to prepare you for Stage 3 (the second year of your chosen degree) and Stage 4 (the final year of your degree).

Postgraduate pathwayA postgraduate pathway is a single course comprising two stages of study; Pre–Master’s and Master’s. When you successfully complete the pathway you will be awarded a Master’s degree from Anglia Ruskin University.

Pre–Master’s

The Pre-Master’s course is Stage 1 of the postgraduate pathway, and is one semester in duration. It has been designed to prepare students who have not qualified for direct entry to Anglia Ruskin University’s Master’s degrees, for postgraduate level studies. There are many postgraduate pathways, including the Master of Business Administration (MBA), the Master of Laws (LLM), the Master of Science (MSc) in Engineering Management.

Undertaking a Pre–Master’s course will provide you with the time to adjust to the rigorous research and independent study requirements of postgraduate studies and prepare you to get the most out of your Master’s studies at the University.

Semester study plans

The undergraduate pathway advantageCRIC’s undergraduate pathway is tailored according to your choice of degree. For example, if you have chosen to do a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computing, you will study subjects related to this degree. This will allow you to acquire the necessary background knowledge and study skills to excel in your chosen degree.

While studying your undergraduate pathway you will have access to all of Anglia Ruskin University’s modern, well equipped teaching and library facilities, sporting and recreational amenities and on–campus accommodation.

The advantages of a CRIC undergraduate pathway include:

• A seamless transition from school to university: While the initial stages of your university life are the most important, this is often the time when many students can feel lost or anxious. We understand this and have put processes in place to ease the transition from school to university level studies.

• Access to scholarships: When you progress to the second year of your degree (Stage 3) in your undergraduate pathway, Anglia Ruskin University will reduce your course fee by £500.

• Additional study support, English language assistance and unparalleled personalised attention: The extra academic contact hours will not only allow you to fully develop your knowledge and understanding of each module, but will better prepare you for university studies. You will also be studying in small groups, giving you an unmatched level of access to your teachers.

Postgraduate pathways at Anglia Ruskin University

The postgraduate pathway advantageA CRIC postgraduate pathway provides you with valuable insight into postgraduate–level studies in the UK. Most importantly, it will equip you with the appropriate knowledge and skills you need to excel in your chosen taught master’s degree.

The postgraduate pathway is designed for students from a variety of backgrounds who:

• come from a different academic environment to that of the UK

• have been away from studies for a period of time

• are looking to fine-tune skills already gained during undergraduate studies, employment or both.

If you fall into any of the above categories, choosing the postgraduate pathway at CRIC is the right decision.

The Pre-Master’s pathway will prepare you for future postgraduate studies by giving you confidence and expertise in areas relevant to your taught master’s degree.

You will:

• develop your fundamental knowledge and understanding of the basic principles relevant to your chosen degree

• develop basic numerical techniques, research methodologies and ICT, presentation and communication skills

• gain a competent set of transferable skills that will help you in your academic studies and future career, and enable you to make informed decisions

• attain the necessary level of language competence specific to your chosen field of study.

Pathways Duration Intakes Structure AssessmentPre-Master’s(Stage1)

One semester September, January and June

While studying at CRIC, students will cover a series of modules that will prepare them for a seamless progression to their chosen taught master’s degree. All modules include core academic skills relevant to postgraduate study.

Assessment for most modules is continuous, and includes tests, assignments and a dissertation. Most modules have a final two-hour examination.

Master’s(Stage2)

One year — 18 months

September and January

The Master’s (Stage 2) offers students the chance to build on what they have learned during the Pre–Master’s and extend their professional understanding about their relevant area of study. A taught master’s degree usually consists of a series of specialist modules in structured class, seminar or tutorial formats. A research thesis component may be included, but is much shorter than what is required for a master’s degree by research. However, most taught masters’ degrees will have a final major project or dissertation component.

Modules will be assessed via exams, assignments, essays, or seminar performance (group or individual presentations). Assessment may also include projects that can be completed either as part of a group or individually. For most Masters’ degrees, preparing and submitting a major project or dissertation will form a large part of the assessment and final grade.

Accommodation

During your studies, we want you to be as comfortable and happy as possible. Choosing the right accommodation for your stay will help to create an enjoyable learning environment for you and your fellow students.

CRIC offers a variety of accommodation options. It’s important that you spend some time thinking about which is the right choice for you.

In Cambridge we offer accommodation in:

• CB1 (Anglia Ruskin University hall of residence)

• Peter Taylor House (Anglia Ruskin University hall of residence)

• Host family accommodation through homestay consultancy.

In Chelmsford we offer accommodation in Ransomes Way student village.

In this guide we list the advantages and disadvantages of each option. Read each section carefully and take advice from your family and friends. The following questions and answers may also help with your decision.

When should I book my accommodation? We strongly advise that you book your accommodation as soon as you accept your offer of admission at CRIC. We only have a limited number of rooms available and we work on the basis of first come, first served.

How do I book my preferred accommodation?Once you have accepted your offer of admission, the CRIC team will send you an application for accommodation form. You will need to complete this and return it as soon as possible to the Student Services Manager, at [email protected].

When do I have to pay and how much will it cost? For Peter Taylor House, CB1 and Ransomes Way accommodation you will also need to make a deposit of £1000 (international)

or £300 (UK/EU) and then pay the remaining accommodation fee before you arrive at CRIC. We are unable to give any student access to a room without the full semester fees being paid. For host family accommodation you will need to ensure the full fees are pain in advance of arriving.

Please check the following accommodation sections for price details.

What happens if I can’t have my first choice? If your preference as specified on the application for accommodation form is not available, we will try to provide alternative accommodation that meets your needs as closely as possible.

I’m under 18 years of age. What accommodation options are available to me?If your younger than 18, you must stay with one of our host families in homestay accommodation. In a homestay, you live with a typical British family in their house. Please contact us at [email protected] for information on homestays.
