Wheelersrsquo family affair thrives at WynOaks

A family partnership that began 15 years ago with the purchase of a timeworn Delta Pa property has grown into Wyn-Oaks Farm a leading breeding and foaling operation managed by Chip and Barbara Wheeler

The Wheelers partnered with Chiprsquos mother and step-father Susan and Stephen Quick who had built their own farm in For-est Hill Md in the mid 1970s Twelve miles apart and across state lines it is an easy commute between homes and businesses for the family that works together

The Quicks purchased their own farm to house ponies owned by then teenagers Chip and his older sister Su-zanne ldquoI was not really into horses at allrdquo said Susan ldquoI had just re-married had two chil-dren a husband and a farm that I knew nothing aboutrdquo

Stephen turned the farm from a hobby into a full-time responsibility after retiring from the building industry Deciding to buy a brood-mare he delved into the science of Thor-oughbred pedigrees and breeding With the blessing of beginnerrsquos luck their first pur-chase was a barren Virginia-bred daughter of First Landing named Pilgrimrsquos Pride who they bred in 1978

ldquoAt the time everyone wanted to breed to Northern Dancer but we knew we couldnrsquot do thatrdquo said Susan ldquoSo we bred her to North Sea [both Northern Dancer and North Sea sons of Nearctic] and the result was Kattegatrsquos Priderdquo

Kattegatrsquos Pride became a grad-ed stakes winner and three-time Mary-land-bred champion who won 19 of 54 starts and $511812 and when bred to Spend a Buck produced her one and only filly named Kattebuck in 1988 A winner

herself Kattebuck produced millionaire and two-time Maryland-bred champion Silmar-il a daughter of Diamond The Quicks had firmly supported the Maryland-bred pro-gram but it was difficult to ignore what was beginning to happen in Pennsylvania with the statersquos lucrative bonuses to PA-Breds

ldquoMy mother-in-law is a die-hard Mary-landerrdquo said Barbara ldquoShe and Stephen had a great run breeding and racing there for over 30 years but as the Pennsylvania breeders bonuses came through she no-ticed Almost all of their foals are born in Pennsylvania at WynOaks nowrdquo

The Quicksrsquo success with their small band of fillies inspired the name for their new venture in Pennsylvania ldquoIt is kind of a play on wordsrdquo said Barbara ldquoWe love the fillies and of course wersquod love to someday win the Oaks with one of them so therefore the Pennsylvania farm became WynOaks

The WynOaks property originally held one house and lots of grassy pasture al-though no horses had been living there for years The Wheelers expanded the 97 acres with a 60-acre buffer zone purchased from PECO to keep the hunters at bay and a new barn allowed for equine residents other than their own small band of mares

Barbara and Chip met 30 years ago while working for a liquor distributor when she was 19 Soon after they moved to the

Quicksrsquo farm in Maryland While Chip cur-rently handles the physical part of the farm life at WynOaks his wife is the organizer and also juggles a job 30 minutes away in purchasing at the US Armyrsquos Proving Ground in Aberdeen Md ldquoBarbara had never been involved with horses before we metrdquo said Chip ldquoBut she was kind of forced into this lifestyle and has a very good busi-ness mind for itrdquo

ldquoWhen I was 20 I was exposed to farm life for the first time in Maryland at the Quicksrsquo home where Chip was raisedrdquo said Barbara ldquoFor the first seven years we man-

aged WynOaks we did most of the work ourselves in order to cut costs and get things going Foaling season from January through mid-June this year is the only time I get physically involved going down to the barn and help-ing with the babies and mares Other-wise I deal with all of the paperwork for our

client base so I know everything involved with the breeding and registering of the foals is getting kept up to daterdquo

The existing small barn on their prop-erty worked well for their own band of mares but when clients like leading owner and breeder Tom McClay came aboard with his broodmares the research began to de-sign and build a larger better barn

Gathering ideas for the new structure the Wheelers travelled to Kentucky and returned ready to begin hiring a group of Amish men as builders ldquoThey are very quiet hardworking peoplerdquo said Barbara ldquoThey were clean and tidy on the job site and built us a beautiful 28-stall barn with

large foaling stalls in which we installed camerasrdquo

Within a year the Wheelers were visited by Bernie and Betsy Houghton ldquoThey came to visit with my in-laws and were very open in helping us understand the PA breeding in-dustry They were on the same track as we are breeding their own sound sturdy horses Bernie told us not to worry about selling our homebreds but to worry about their handling after investing so much into each of themrdquo

Aside from her business savvy Barba-ra takes on a great public relations role in speaking about the farmrsquos investment six years ago in multiple stakes-winning million-aire Weigelia as the farmrsquos first stallion

ldquoWeigelia stood his first season at stud for us in 2009rdquo said Barbara ldquoHe was owned by former client Joe Balsamo who retired him sound after racing Ed Price bro-kered the deal and when we went to see the horse down in Florida we expected to see a tired out racehorse but here he was out on the lead shank on his two hind feetrdquo

ldquoConformationally he is perfectrdquo said Chip ldquoHe was too much to handle for the people caring for him in Florida since he had been mostly in a stall after his retirement

We bought him took him home to WynOaks and gave him a job breeding mares Hersquos not mean at all but he is active and looks more like a very fit horse rather than a retired horserdquo

ldquoWe had been to breeding sheds all over and had seen some very aggressive stallionsrdquo said Barbara ldquoWe were a little shy about standing our own but Weigelia is a perfect gentleman He actually lives in the barn where the mares live none immediately surrounding him of course We were hugely lucky that way as he is good in the breeding shed is very fertile and we rarely have to breed him twicerdquo

Her conversation about the WynOaks breeding plan is peppered with the word ldquodurabilityrdquo which is what WynOaks looks for in broodmares for their stallion For exam-ple Stephen Quick purchased the 7-year-old Housebuster mare Polar Miss for $1000 in a 2006 mixed sale Her daughter and Wei-geliarsquos second-highest earner ($287983) is Isabella Swift who is currently racing at the age of 5

ldquoWersquove hoping to get him more atten-tion ndash he consistently gets a dozen outside mares plus our own little band and wersquove

had stronger interest this year with people noticing his 2015 stakes winner Brendarsquos Way who was also his first winner [and is his leading earner]rdquo

The Wheelers eventually sent two of Weigeliarsquos offspring to the Houghtons to train ldquoWe really admire Bernie as a trainerrdquo said Barbara ldquoThey could not be better people They actually bred to our stallion this year after Bernie took notice of some of Wegeliarsquos foals that he ended up racing againstrdquo

Certainly the eight-time stakes-winning son of Safelyrsquos Mark now 14 years old has proven his mettle versus those more fash-ionably bred in Pennsylvania by finishing sixth in total stallion awards in 2014

WynOaks is a full-time 24-hour opera-tion located about an hour from Penn Nation-al where the WheelerQuick family is looking forward to watching Weigeliarsquos newest crop take to the track this season No longer the result of ldquobeginnerrsquos luckrdquo the combined success of both families is the result of hard work devotion and a thriving Pennsylvania breeding program a

Favorite Talersquos fees and expenses are now paid for a trip to the $15 million Breed-ersrsquo Cup Sprint-G1 to be held at Keeneland Oct 31 The big score came at the expense of last yearrsquos Eclipse Award-winning sprinter and defending Breedersrsquo Cup Sprint champi-on Work All Week

Sent out by trainer Guadalupe Preciado Favorite Tale turned in a patented frontrun-ning effort ndash shooting out of the gate setting all fractions and blasting home to the finish He completed six furlongs in 10885 af-ter clocking a quarter in 2184 the half in 4409 and five furlongs in 5598

ldquoIt was great I sent him all the way until I got the lead and hersquos a horse that once it gets a lead he will keep on goingrdquo said rider Edgard Zayas ldquo[Preciado] just told me to have a good break and to extend the lead Today was a special dayrdquo

The 2014 PA-Bred champion 3-year-old male Favorite Tale won five races last year topped by a dazzling performance in the Grade 3 Gallant Bob Stakes at Parx in September The sprint specialist also came within a fifth of a second off the track record when breaking his maiden at Parx that Janu-ary getting six furlongs in 10766 and won Belmont Parkrsquos Gold Fever Stakes his fourth win in his first five starts

Preciado gave Favorite Tale the winter off after he was fifth beaten four lengths in the Frank J De Francis Memorial Dash in November The Parx-based shipperrsquos return this year came at Monmouth in May in the Decathlon Stakes but he never got closer than a length of the leader and finished sec-ond He took the lead next out in the True North Stakes at Belmont Park but had to rush to get there after stumbling at the start and failed to last

The PTHA Horsemen recently negoti-ated a new racing schedule with PARX The balance of 2015 and the projected 2016 race dates have been posted The highlight of 2015 will be an eight-week ldquoFall Festivalrdquo during which time the daily purses will average $500k and the PA-Bred restricted race purses will be huge The MSW purse will be $60k the 125 N2 $35k the A1x $70k and the A2x $74k

As a breeder and owner myself I canrsquot wait for the Fall Festival to begin To sum it up in a word from one of the statersquos premier breeders Rick Abbott ldquoWOWrdquo Another breeder Greg Newell exclaimed ldquoDid you ever think we would be racing for that kind of moneyrdquo The PA Stakes will also be raised to $100k PA-Breds will still have

preference and purses for the balance of the year will remain as usual

During the seven-week period after Christ mas until February 13 you will have the option to give your horses a little rest which is probably long overdue or you can run at Penn National Sam Elliott director of racing at PARX has promised that you will not lose stalls during this break Over the last couple of years many race cards have been cancelled due to inclement weather and safety conditions If you decide to continue training the PTHA has made sure the track will remain open and properly maintained

This is a win-win situation for all involved Thanks goes out to the PTHA and PARX for putting this all together

Hopes were high when the beautiful 2-year-old filly Tonasah stepped out on the track for the Astoria Stakes at Belmont Park on Belmont Stakes Festival Thursday June 4 with the public making the Todd A Pletcher trainee one of the favorites even though it was her first start But what became memorable was her jaunt around the track eluding captors after dumping Javier Castellano in the post parade and delaying the race about 10 minutes

Luckily Tonasah returned to the barn unscathed and finally made her first official start on July 2 at Belmont Sent off as the 4-5 favorite in the field of eight she was a perfect lady as she burst away from the gate opened a daylight lead and cruised home a five and

a half-length winner in the five-furlong maiden special weight worth $75000

Start number two was a big step up for as trainer Brandon Kulp sent him out in stakes competition for the six-furlong Dan-zig Stakes for 3-year-old PA-Breds at Penn National June 12 And the result was even easier

Sent off as the 6-1 fourth choice in the field of seven Amplified was quick away led at every call and drew off to an impres-sive six-length score over favored Instruc-tor Kuno His final time was a sensational 10935

Bred and owned by Thomas McClay Amplified is a member of the first PA-sired crop for Smarty Jones His dam stakes-placed Queens Point (by Pyramid Peak) has two older foals both winners but Amplified is her first stakes performer

When the bay came to the races mak-ing his first start at 2 in September 1987 few would have anticipated what was to come Win Man was winless in his first dozen starts

finally breaking through with a maiden claim-ing win at Penn National in April 1988 But the wins began to add up for the durable geld-ing who made 20 or more starts a season for five consecutive years from 1988 to 1992 He won 10 races at age 5 from 29 starts his win percentage was even higher during his 9-year-old season as he won 11 of 16 And in his final year of competition as a 10-year-old in 1995 he won six times and placed in another six from 17 starts
