Everything was going well unl the prospecve bridegroom asked: Rabbi Kushner, would you be willing to make one small change in the ceremony? Instead of pronouncing us husband and wife ll death do us part, could you pro- nounce us husband and wife for as long as our love lasts? Weve talked about this, and we both feel that if we ever get to the point where we no longer love each other, its not morally right for us to be stuck with each other and be deprived of any chance for happiness.Rabbi Kushner would not agree to the change. I told them that I respected their distaste for hypocri- sy, for not wanng to live in a loveless marriage,Rabbi Kushner writes. I told them that I could understand their fear of making a total commitment to this marriage be- cause it might hurt too much if it didnt work out. But I warned them that if they didnt enter this marriage on the assumpon that it was for keeps, if they moved in togeth- er but didnt totally unpack, ready to move out when things got tough, there was no chance that they would be happy together. They would not be commied enough to stay together during the inevitable tough mes . . . One of the promises a husband and wife make to each other is the commitment to sck together through the hard mes in the faith that the hard mes will one day end and the affecon they once felt for each other will reemerge. That is Jesuspoint in todays Gospel: love—authenc love—is hard work. SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

NOTE FROM THE PASTOR:

“Be merciful, just as your father is merciful.” Luke 6:35

Pastor’s Note

IN GOOD TIMES AND IN BAD TIMES In his new book Overcoming Life’s Disappointments, Rabbi Harold Kushner tells of meeting with a young couple to prepare their wedding ceremony. Everything was going well until the prospective bridegroom asked: “Rabbi Kushner, would you be willing to make one small change in the ceremony? Instead of pronouncing us husband and wife till death do us part, could you pro-nounce us husband and wife for as long as our love lasts? We’ve talked about this, and we both feel that if we ever get to the point where we no longer love each other, it’s not morally right for us to be stuck with each other and be deprived of any chance for happiness.” Rabbi Kushner would not agree to the change. “I told them that I respected their distaste for hypocri-sy, for not wanting to live in a loveless marriage,” Rabbi Kushner writes. “I told them that I could understand their fear of making a total commitment to this marriage be-cause it might hurt too much if it didn’t work out. But I warned them that if they didn’t enter this marriage on the assumption that it was for keeps, if they moved in togeth-er but didn’t totally unpack, ready to move out when things got tough, there was no chance that they would be happy together. They would not be committed enough to stay together during the inevitable tough times . . . One of the promises a husband and wife make to each other is the commitment to stick together through the hard times in the faith that the hard times will one day end and the affection they once felt for each other will reemerge.” That is Jesus’ point in today’s Gospel: love—authentic love—is hard work. But love endures long after the ro-mance hardens into reality; love finds its fulfillment in dia-pers and mortgages and college tuition and the messes and complexities of everyday life; love dares to hope and sacrifice despite the disappointments and hurts. May we dare to love as God loves us: regardless of the cost and sacrifice, without limit or condition, totally and complete-ly, in the eternal hope that such love will transform us and those we love in the life of God. THE CARDINAL’S ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP APPEAL

Last year, our parish participated in the Renew + Re-build Campaign which helped our parish raise funds for necessary capital needs. As you may know, the Cardi-nal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal was a part of that cam-paign for one year. Letters for the 2019 Appeal have been sent. Your par-ticipation in the 2019 Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Ap-peal helps sustain a variety of programs that reach out to more than 2.8 million Catholics in our archdiocese. The majority of the funds this year will now go directly back to parishes to ensure our parishes can keep providing a faith home to tens of thousands of Catho-lics. To learn more and to hear from those directly impact-ed by the Cardinal’s Appeal, go to www.cardinalsappeal.org. The goal for St. Augustine for 2019 is $134,500. Please prayerfully consider your participation.

Thank you for your generosity and support.

GROWING CLOSER TO GOD Starting today; make a commitment to spend 10 minutes reading scripture and 10 minutes praying

everyday. Start with any book of the bible, Psalms, Wis-dom, Gospels, and read a section for 10 minutes each day. Also find 10 minutes each day for a simple prayer, the Our Father, Hail Mary, the rosary or just a simple con-versation with God and or a prayer of thanks. This is a simple way of growing closer to God and letting Him grow closer to you.

The items requested for February SOUP, PASTA & CEREAL

Donations of food can be left in the baskets at the front & side entrances to the

church during the day and especially brought by the children during

every 10:30 am Sunday Mass. Thank you for your continued generosity

ASH WEDNESDAY MASS & DISTRIBUTION OF

ASHES SCHEDULE 9:00 am, 12:00 Noon and 7:30 pm

WHY ASHES? On this day the Church invites us to re-ceive a cross of ashes on our foreheads as a

sign that during the coming Season of Lent we will make sincere efforts to cleanse our lives of sin and to discipline ourselves through prayers and fasting.

WHO MAY RECEIVE ASHES? Baptized individuals who have reached the age of rea-son. Babies and young children who have not yet received the Sacrament of Penance should not be presented to receive ashes, as ashes are intended for those capable of personal sin. The keeping of Ash Wednesday is for leading the baptized members of the Church to repentance and renewal of baptismal promises at Easter.

ASHES FOR THE HOMEBOUND Please contact the rectory at 914-834-1220 if you know of anyone who would like to receive ashes but is home-bound and cannot come to the church.

LENT 2019 Lenten Devotional Books are available at the Lenten Table in the Vestibule of the church. The Little Black Book provides 6 minute

meditations during each day of Lent. Please take one. Other Lenten handouts will be available throughout the Lenten Season. Please check the table each week for new materials to enhance your Season of Lent.

SPIRITUALITY OF BEAUTY WITH FATHER CIORRA

Fr. Tony Ciorra, professor of theology and VP for Sacred Heart University’s Mission & Catholic Identity, will speak to us on Saturday, March 16th at 10:00 am in Kenny Hall. His book Beauty: A Path to God explores the ability of beauty to introduce components of prayer, joy and spirituality into our lives, this Lent and always. Please join us after the 9:00 am Mass to hear this well known and well-loved speaker.

CLOISTERS TOUR FOR THE KIDS

The Medieval Bestiary will be the theme of a fun tour of the Cloisters for grades 1—4 on Wednes-day, March 13th (Superintendent’s Day: no school and no Rel. Ed class). Combine with friends to take your child on their day off from school on this parish-sponsored tour of all the many animals featured in artworks from the Middle Ages. We’ve reserved places for 30 kids and 8 or more adults! Email parishioner and Parish council mem-ber Charles du pin de St. Cyr for more information at [email protected].

STATIONS OF THE CROSS On four Wednesday evenings during Lent, we will be praying the Stations of the Cross in

the church at 7:15 pm, a time set for the convenience of those who drop off their children at Religious Education. Please join us on March 13th for Stations for the Suffer-ing, Ill and Disabled.
