TITLE: Who Is On The Throne? TEXT: II Chronicles 35:20 - 36:23
KEY VERSE: “… they continually mocked the messengers of God, despised His words and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against His people,
until there was no remedy.” (2 Chronicles 36:16) I. Josiah is the last true king to actually over Judah. A. Despite all Josiah’s efforts, it was too late to turn the kingdom around. B. With the death of Josiah came the death of Judah. II. Egypt over the people of Judah. A. The people try to make Josiah’s son Joahaz their king, but… B. Pharaoh Neco makes Joahaz’s brother, Eliakim, his puppet king. 1. Neco exercises his sovereignty over Eliakim by renaming him Jehoiakim. 2. Jehoiakim did evil in the sight of the LORD. III. Babylon over the people of Judah. A. Nebuchadnezzar takes Eliakim a.k.a. Jehoiakim to Babylon. B. The people try to make Jehoiakim’s son Jehoiachin their king, but… C. Nebuchadnezzar takes Jehoiachin to Babylon & appoints his own puppet king, Zedekiah. D. Zedekiah attempts a rebellion against Babylon. E. God brings Babylon to destroy Jerusalem. IV. Cyrus of Persia over the people of Judah.
So who is in charge here, anyway? Cyrus, Neco, Nebuchadnezzar, Joahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, Zedekiah …who?
V. , the true King, still over Judah and over His universe. A. As the true King of the universe, the LORD controls Egypt, Babylon, and Persia. B. As the true King of the universe, the LORD judges His people. C. As the true King, the LORD continues to rule over us. Big Idea: The King of Kings, who has always ruled, still rules… He rules over ! CHALLENGE: Do you acknowledge God’s sovereign control over YOUR life? If you don’t, your life will be a continuing battle between what you for your life & what God in your life. Therefore: MEMORIZE & MEDITATE on Proverbs 3:1–7. Then, obey these demands!
