Re-setting Industry StandardsIn 1997 we set ourselves the objective of designing a Range of Mig torches that would

challenge commonly accepted norms and go far beyond accepted boundaries.

The initial design brief called for a range of torches that would challenge all internationally

accepted brands on ergonomics, features, value and performance.

After 6 years and an endless stream of prototypes we are at last able to launch the XP8

range of Mig torches.

With patented gas flow technology the XP8 is truly

the world’s most productive welding torch.

The XP8 is a fresh approach.

It has been designed around today’s production environment, modern welding techniques and equipment.

The XP8 will set new standards in design, innovation and performance.

What Makes XP8 Different?

80% Duty Cycle

In recent years guidelines laid down by the European Standard EN60974-7 have served to harmonise global understanding

of Mig welding torch performance.

The ratings of European torches were traditionally based on a 5-minute cycle where a 60% duty cycle was defined as 3

minutes weld time and 2 minutes downtime. American torches were traditionally rated over a 10-minute cycle where a 60%

duty cycle represents 6 minutes weld time and 4 minutes downtime.

The new standards have resulted in the duty cycles of many European torch brands being downgraded in performance due

to the extended welding period.

Competitive pressures have also resulted in Mig torches becoming disposable items and whilst the user may save on initial

cost, the loss of performance and durability is ultimately false economy.

Duty cycles quoted by some manufacturers are at best misleading and often fictitious. In line with EN60974-7 a duty cycle of

a torch specifies the number of minutes within a 10-minute period during which a welder can operate at a particular welding

current and voltage.

The XP8 air cooled torch models are rated at 80% and will weld continuously for 8 minutes at their given ratings. The XP8

water-cooled torches are rated at 100% duty cycle and will weld continuously.

Patented Gas Flow Technology

The shielding gas in the XP8 is put to work to improve the cooling effect

of the torch neck and front end consumable parts.

On entering the rear of the neck the gas is separated from the conduit

to flow directly over heat sink fins contained in the copper conductor

before emerging at the base of the tip adaptor to directly force cool the

contact tip.

Superior Ergonomics

The neck and handle geometries have been designed to give a neutral

wrist position whilst welding to reduce the risk of RSI (Repetitive Strain

Injury).

The handle design is the most compact available and the handle grips

are designed to prevent the torch slipping in the welders hand allowing

him to relax his grip, further reducing strain.

The knuckle joint and tapered support improve freedom of movement

and give progressive support to the power cable allowing it to form a

smooth curve into the handle and maximise wire feed.

Extended Consumable Life Expectancy

Superior materials combined with stringent design and performance

criteria have resulted in an entire range of consumables with dramatically

improved life expectancy.

How Parweld Patented Gas Flow Technology gives the ultimate in perfo

At the heart of the product is the XP8 patented gas flow

technology.

The technology has enabled an increase in both the

operational amperage and duty cycle of the torches.

Parweld XP8 air cooled torches are rated at 80% a

performance level far beyond currently accepted

boundaries.

American and European ratings are now harmonised and

are based on a 10 minute cycle.

Torches have traditionally been specified at 60% duty

cycle, ie welding continuously for 6 minutes and rested

for 4 minutes.

The XP8 air cooled torches weld continuously for 8

minutes representing a decrease in downtime of 50%.

Note: All water-cooled torches are rated at 100%.

Similar to the principles adopted in water cooled Mig torche

XP8 utilises a series of channels and apertures through whic

shielding gas passes to force cool all current conductive and

reflective areas.

The shielding gas is separated from the coax conduit and p

over the swan neck conductor through a series of small cha

along the length. The channels have been mathema

calculated to balance the material mass required to carry c

whilst providing the critical surface area required for the gas

as a cooling medium.

Achieving The Ultimate In Productivity

11

XP8 is rated in Kilowattage – Why?

Amperages and duty cycles alone are arbitrary measures of a torches capability.

For a more accurate appreciation wire type, gas type, flow rate and open circuit voltage must all be taken into consideration.

The XP8 is rated in Amps as a guideline but the Kilowattage requirement of a given application provides a far more accurate

method for calculating torch selection.

Kilowattage represents the total power rating required and is calculated as follows:

Welding Amps x Welding Volts = kW

1000

(Amps x Volts = Watts , 1000 Watts = 1 kW)

How do I select a torch using Kilowattage?

If a torch is required to weld at 300 Amps with an open circuit voltage of 34 volts the kilowattage is 10.2 kW.

Ie Welding Amps 300 x Welding Volts 34 = 10.2 kW

1000

Ideal torches for the applications would therefore be the XP8 350A for an air cooled 80% duty requirement or the XP8 450W

for a water cooled 100% application.

Will the gas I use affect the performance of the torch?

The simple answer is yes.

The use of different gas types can have a marked effect on the performance of air cooled torches.

Generally the higher the content of CO2 in the shielding gas the better the performance of the Mig torch.

Page 13: parweld xp8 mig torch

12

Will a pulse welding process affect the performance of the torch?

The affect of pulse welding on all air cooled torches is dramatic.

In the XP8 the affect is similar for all wire types when using a pulse process.

Will the wire type affect the performance of the torch?

Basically yes, but not to the same extent as changes in any other variables.

The Right Liner For The Job

13

Liner performance is subject to many process variables, torch length, wire size, rigidity of liner material, surface characteristics

of filler metal, the severity of cable kinkages, the duty cycle and heat generation of the process.

Ideally a liner should be as stiff as possible, maintain a tight tolerance over the electrode material without removing surface

deposits or causing it to jar, and not suffer undue wear and tear as a reaction to the surface characteristics of the wire.

There are three liner types available for the XP8.

High Tensile Steel Liner

Ideal for General Purpose Wires

Manufactured using carbon steel the XP8 standard liner gives good wire feeding performance on general purpose welding

wires including flux and metal-cored wires.

Polyamide Liner with Steel Neck Liner

Ideal for Hard Wires and High Deposition Applications

Manufactured using polyamide, this liner is fitted with a floating collet arrangement at the back end, which allows the liner

to be inserted all the way to the feed rollers.

The polyamide construction is ideal for feeding hard wires such as Chrome and Nickel alloys and also general-purpose wires

at high speed where consistent smooth wire feed is essential.

The Steel Neck liner resists wear and heat in the neck area.

Polyamide Liner with Copper Neck Liner

Ideal for Soft Wires

Manufactured using polyamide this liner is also fitted with a floating collet allowing the liner to be inserted all the way to the

feed rollers.

The polyamide construction is ideal for feeding soft wires such as Aluminium and Copper alloys.

The Copper Neck liner resists wear and heat in the neck area.
