Partners in Excellence 1

The nation’s community colleges have redoubled efforts in recent years to increase student degree and credential completion rates in recent due to the precipitous decline of the number of Americans who have completed a post secondary credential or degree. While moving the needle on increasing completion rates has been slow, progress is being made. It is estimated that one in four students who start at two-year colleges move on to four-year institutions, and that more than 60 percent of those students ultimately graduate.1

Moreover, 72 percent of students who completed an associate degree before transferring to a four-year college completed a baccalaureate degree.1 This is compared to the 59 percent of full-time, first-time students who began seeking a bachelor’s degree at a four-year institution in the fall of 2005 and completed the degree within six years.2

There will be an estimated 55 million job openings by 2020 — 65 percent of which will require postsecondary education and training beyond high school.3 If six years is the average length of time needed to complete a bachelor’s degree, then we must act now to ensure that more students complete their degrees and on time.

That’s where we come in. Phi Theta Kappa has developed a series of programs and initiatives designed to engage two-year college students and prepare them for credential and degree completion at their community college and beyond.

Phi Theta Kappa’s Community College Completion Corps (C4), established as an answer to President Barak Obama’s call to increase the number of college graduates by 2020, aims to help all students understand the benefit of completing a college credential and the consequences of not. What started as a grass-roots movement by Phi Theta Kappa chapters has grown to statewide initiatives across the country.

State community college systems are bringing their colleges together to spread the message of completion. In 2013, approximately 264,000 students committed to the completion of a college credential. That number

is expected to grow by leaps and bounds as 816 two-year colleges are expected to participate in a statewide C4 initiative by the end of 2015.

But support of our members doesn’t end at the two-year level. Through CollegeFish.org, our highly acclaimed, award-winning web-based transfer tool, Phi Theta Kappa connects community college transfer students with four-year college and university recruiters. As a subscriber to CollegeFish.org, recruiters find transfer students who are the best match for their institutions.

CollegeFish.org is open to all two-year college students free of charge. The college transfer tool is partnering with community college state systems throughout the United States, dramatically extending the scope and reach of the resource to transfer-bound community college students everywhere.

This resource helps students take the correct transfer courses in sequence, providing academic advising while saving time and money. It also provides a vast scholarship search engine, matching students with scholarships and senior colleges with their best-fit students.

We encourage you to visit with us during NerdNation, Phi Theta Kappa’s Annual Convention, April 16-18, 2015, San Antonio, Texas, as an exhibitor during the senior college transfer fair attended by more than 3,000 student members or as a four-year college sponsor. Come build relationships with our more than 900 chapter advisors, who devote countless hours behind the scenes to make their chapters and our members even more successful. Or, designate a transfer scholarship specifically for Phi Theta Kappa members — more than 700 senior colleges already do, making over $37 million available to our students. As you can see, involvement with Phi Theta Kappa leads to a win-win for both the student and for your institution.

Our College Relations team is eager to put your institution on the fast track to success. Composed of proven, experienced recruitment professionals, they work closely with two-year college students, faculty and transfer counselors. Together, they bring a wealth of professional experience and research to provide expert guidance in transfer recruitment best practices.

Excellence is our specialty, and we hope you’ll join us as a Partner in Excellence today.

Sincerely,

Rod A. Risley, Ph.D.Executive Director and CEOPhi Theta Kappa Honor Society

Pictured left: Mary Moffett, FAU Assistant Director of Academic Services, greets incoming transfer student and FAU Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarship recipient Maylee DeJesus and her daughters, Marializ and Veronica Velazquez. DeJesus, majoring in Public Administration, hopes to become a city manager in the state of Florida upon earning her baccalaureate degree.

Enrolling at Palm Beach State College in Florida to earn her two-year transfer degree was just the beginning of Maylee DeJesus’ journey toward creating a better life for herself and her two daughters.

“I wanted to be able to show them that in today’s competitive world, a college degree is necessary and worth the effort,” says DeJesus.

Despite the challenges of working full-time and being a single mother, DeJesus took another major step toward transforming her life when she not only accepted the invitation to join Phi Theta Kappa, but also decided to become an active member. Eager to give back, she participated in a number of leadership, service and fellowship events, earning the nickname of “Chocolate Queen” thanks to her knack for selling fundraising chocolates to earn money for the chapter.

According to DeJesus, “Joining Phi Theta Kappa has been the best decision I’ve ever made in my academic and career life. Phi Theta Kappa has allowed me to travel for conventions, learn leadership skills that will stick with me in my career as well as in school, and has allowed me to meet new people by networking. It has given me opportunities that I never would have imagined, such as having peace of mind that I won’t have extensive loans to pay back when I’m finally done with school, due to the scholarships I’ve received.”

As DeJesus prepared to complete her two-year transfer degree at Palm Beach State, she was excited to learn she was selected as the recipient of the Florida Atlantic University Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarship, only to learn of a stipulation that potentially would make her ineligible – part-time enrollment.

Her tenacity and determination won over Mary Moffett, the FAU Assistant Director of Academic Services, who was

able to attain a waiver to extend the scholarship award to DeJesus. Moffett, an FAU employee for over a decade, has worked tirelessly to advocate and build partnerships with the area Phi Theta Kappa chapters, even joining them on weekend community service projects. FAU, which began as the nation’s only transfer university 53 years ago and admitted only transfer students for its first

20 years, welcomes the leadership and diversity community college transfers

bring to their various campuses, enriching their community.

Together, Maylee DeJesus and Mary Moffett truly

exemplify the power of partnerships in celebrating

emerging community college leaders and academic

achievers as well as creating new and

innovative pathways toward baccalaureate

degree attainment.

Attending Phi Theta Kappa’s Annual Convention, Nerd Nation, and other Phi Theta Kappa conferences, has given me A SENSE OF PRIDE IN MY ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS and inspired me TO KEEP PURSUING NEW CHALLENGES.

PROGRESS

To Felix German Contreras and his family, the United States offers countless opportunities, and based on the sacrifices his parents made to bring him and his siblings to this country from the Dominican Republic, he remains dedicated to taking advantage of as many as possible. After being invited to join Phi Theta Kappa as a student at Atlantic Cape Community College in

Mays Landing, New Jersey, Contreras wasn’t satisfied to just be a traditional member. He stepped forward to run for regional office of the Middle States Region. A naturally poised and powerful public speaker, Contreras’ infectious smile and spirit provided encouragement and leadership to all the other Phi Theta chapters and members with whom he came in contact.

Says Contreras, “Phi Theta Kappa is a life changer. I cannot thank the Alpha Delta Mu chapter and the Middle States Region enough. It is because of them that I believe in myself as a leader. The pride and joy of being a Phi Theta Kappa member will be instilled within me forever.”

As his regional office tenure came to a close, Contreras began preparing to transfer to a four-year college as the next major milestone in his college completion journey toward becoming a physician. CollegeFish.org provided him with a great starting point to begin his search.

“If not for CollegeFish.org, I would not have been aware of the many colleges and universities that contacted me. It’s incredibly easy to use and matched me with several institutions that fit my needs. Through CollegeFish.org I learned that even Ivy League institutions are searching for the nation’s top community college students.” CollegeFish.org connected him to the University of Pennsylvania, to which he applied and was admitted.

Evangeline Diaz, Recruitment Manager of the College of Liberal and Professional Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, appreciates the value of leadership

and diversity students like Contreras bring to the campus community.

“Community college transfer students are important to UPENN because we have

witnessed the success stories first hand. Community college students bring a different level of maturity, diversity and experience to the classroom and to the Penn community at large,” says Diaz.

The University of Pennsylvania has taken advantage of several of Phi Theta Kappa’s transfer partnership programs, including serving as one of the initial senior college partners as CollegeFish.org opened its doors to all community college students nationwide. As Diaz sees it, “Phi Theta Kappa and CollegeFish.org have enhanced our recruitment experience by allowing us to tailor our communications to specific student populations throughout the year. Phi Theta Kappa has allowed our students to build a community on campus and increased awareness of Penn LPS on a national level. “

IF NOT FOR COLLEGEFISH.ORG, I would

Dimitri Lyon has gained a genuine appreciation and understanding of not only the value of transfer students, but also their unique journey and its benefits to their campus culture upon transfer. “Transfer students are an important part of our recruitment strategy because they form the foundation of the dreams and hopes that continue to inspire our nation. It is these dreams which enable senior intuitions like us to exist, because our work is toward fulfilling the dream of every student that comes our way.” Partnership with Phi Theta Kappa has enabled Texas A&M-Commerce to have an audience with some of the nation’s most gifted students. “As a result of our partnership we have had the opportunity to participate in transfer fairs and programs specific to the transfer demographic. Through this involvement we have been successful in recruiting high achieving students who add value and depth to our academic programs. Phi Theta Kappa most importantly, has provided us access to CollegeFish.org which is one of the most comprehensive databases of community college students across the nation. Because of our longstanding partnership and the return on investment we receive by recruiting Phi Theta Kappa students, our institution has committed itself to providing scholarships specific to Phi Theta Kappa members.”

After Michelle Kemeny served in the U.S. Air Force, she was unsure of her next steps. Thanks to Mesa Community College and her involvement in Phi Theta Kappa, Kemeny overcame Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and reengaged in civilian life in pursuit of becoming a registered dietitian. Kemeny earned two prestigious honors bestowed to community college scholars - being named to the 2014 All-USA Community College Academic Team and receiving a Guistwhite Scholarship. “Receiving these scholarships has given me new meaning in life and a purpose to move forward. It has given me the credentials and confidence to be a great mentor to my fellow students, friends and family.” As she prepared for transfer, Kemeny credits CollegeFish.org with helping her stay focused and organized. “CollegeFish.org is an amazing tool. It let me search and compare universities. It sent me email updates about scholarships and schools I might be interested in. It even kept me on track with enrollment and transfer deadlines.” Headed to Arizona State University, Kemeny’s military service and leadership positions in Phi Theta Kappa have equipped her with an outstanding foundation for continued success.

Marcia Helm prides herself on being a woman of her word so when she accepted a friend’s challenge to apply to at least one dream school to pursue her baccalaureate degree in Anthrozoology, she simply had to do it. “The confidence I have gained working with Phi Theta Kappa taught me that taking a risk is the only way to succeed. Of course, I went straight to CollegeFish.org to find out more details about the college. The price intimidated me, but with CollegeFish.org listing their generous transfer scholarships it was worth dreaming of and reaching for. The risk paid off and I am following my dream. The possibility of running a service dog training program wouldn’t have been possible without Phi Theta Kappa and CollegeFish.org.”

For Trang Pham, starting her higher education journey at Asnuntuck Community College in Enfield, Connecticut, not only opened many doors of opportunity, but also unlocked the door of freedom. Her mother immigrated to the United States following the Vietnam War to provide Pham and her five siblings a better life. Growing up in a single-parent household, money was often tight but opportunity was invaluable and dreams were plentiful. “The affordability of a community college is the only way I could pursue higher education. I am proud to say that I am the first person in my family to go to college. I struggle at times, but watching my mother struggle to support six kids has ignited my drive to succeed.” Pham’s drive and ambition has led the Phi Theta Kappa member to earn a 3.82 GPA and be awarded several scholarships. The combination of starting her education journey at a community college and participating in Phi Theta Kappa’s leadership and service programs has resulted in opportunities to achieve her academic and career goals. “As an ambitious woman who has faced hardships, Asnuntuck Community College and Phi Theta Kappa have given me the will to win, the desire to succeed and the drive to reach my fullest potential!”

Nathaniel Johnson had aspirations of attending a nationally known university after serving his country in the U.S. Navy. As a working parent who had been out of school for several years, Delaware Tech Community College made the most sense academically and financially. During his studies at DTCC, Johnson was invited to join his campus’ Phi Theta Kappa chapter and eventually was elected chapter president, earning him special recognition at his recent commencement ceremony. “Being recognized at graduation by the dean of our college was a very proud, unexpected moment for me. It reminded me of the joy and pride I would see in the newly inducted faces of Phi Theta Kappa members as I would shake their hands.” Completing his community college degree was a critical first step toward pursuing his dream job of becoming a general manager of a national professional sports franchise. Johnson’s next step will be to start classes at Seton Hall University, where he will major in Sports Management. “Without the scholarships I received due to my academic achievement, leadership experience, and Phi Theta Kappa involvement, I would not have been able to attend my dream transfer school.”

Le’Garland Lee Parker’s involvement in Phi Theta Kappa was not only life changing, but opened the door to his dream of being an orthopedic surgeon. “Phi Theta Kappa has provided me with a sense of hope and renewed confidence. As a kid growing up in a low income neighborhood, higher education was not predicted in my future, and the essence of success was a mere fantasy. After attending Tyler Junior College and accepting my invitation into Phi Theta Kappa, my negative notions about my future diminished.” Thanks to the university transfer merit scholarship Parker received, he’s one step closer to fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a doctor while limiting the amount of debt he incurs throughout this higher education journey. “Scholarships are very important to me because it provides an incentive of affording higher education. It allows me to avoid debt and the stress associated with it, while focusing on my future and studies.”

As an alumnus of South Seattle Community College, Gwen Jackson has a deep appreciation of the community college transfer student. As the Assistant Director of Transfer Admissions at Seattle University, she advocates and prioritizes admission pathways for community college transfer students, citing the unique whole student experience that Seattle U offers its students. “Seattle University’s transfer population is comprised of students who work, who are displaced and seeking a second career, traditional and non-traditional aged students, parents and veterans. These students bring diverse and mature perspectives to the classroom and other learning environments. Their rich life lessons benefit all students in preparation for entering the real world.” Seattle U’s partnership with CollegeFish.org opened the doors even further when the institution hosted CollegeFish.org’s statewide kick-off meeting, opening up CollegeFish.org access to all community college transfer bound students in the Washington community college system.

SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT

An international student whose family emigrated from China to Italy for better opportunities, Fei Fei Zeng came to the United States to complete her high school and college education. Faced with international student tuition, attending Carl Albert College was the most economical decision for Zeng. Determined to take advantage of campus life, Zeng became a Resident Assistant on campus, participated in a nationally recognized student business program, and was elected as her Phi Theta Kappa chapter’s president. She quickly dove in to CollegeFish.org, earning the “Fish Fanatic 2014” award for her enthusiastic support of the various transfer preparation resources CollegeFish.org offers. “Through my research at CollegeFish.org I came to know about scholarship opportunities at Mississippi State University and with further help from the staff at Phi Theta Kappa, I was able to receive a full tuition scholarship from MSU.”

For Lynn Russell, CollegeFish.org has helped broaden her institution’s transfer recruitment reach, opening up the campus doors to students from out of state and across the globe. “Our President, Dr. Mark Keenum, is a transfer student himself, as are 51 percent of MSU graduates. MSU is not just a senior college with transfer students, we are a transfer university.” Mississippi State University also offers a wealth of transfer scholarships and incentives to attract the best and brightest to their campus, increasing the institution’s diversity and culture. Coupled with Phi Theta Kappa’s outstanding scholarship opportunities and MSU’s commitment to building and supporting transfer pathways of success, this partnership is a win-win for MSU and incoming community college transfer students.
