MD'S MESSAGE

Alan ThomsonManaging Director

Looking back over the last twelve years ADSSC has evolved from a small start-up organization to be one of the most respected regional utilities. We are now recognized on a global platform with our STEP now widely known in the tunnel and sewerage sectors.

We have invested heavily in infrastructure improvements and I am proud to say that we now have a greatly improved collection and treatment capability. Additionally, our work on the treated water delivery is also much improved with more investment underway.

Now, what about the future…?

There are still many areas where we can improve and I would say that the next five years should be focusing on working smarter and using our capital to see benefits on our service and environmental impact.

One area where we are likely to see change is the introduction of tariffs for waste water services. Almost every developed country charges its customers for waste water. Why should Abu Dhabi be different? When the charges are eventually introduced, it will raise customer awareness of our services. The increased awareness will put scrutiny on how we interact with our customers. ADSSC will therefore

have to improve our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and ensure we maintain our high customer satisfaction rating.

Another area for improvement is data management. At present, we have many sources of data from our operations, investment and finance. Much of this data is stored but not properly analyzed and presented to our managers. Better information will lead to more informed decisions and subsequently wiser use of investment capital.

Connected to data is SCADA. SCADA is Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. In practice it is the information gathered from instruments and measurements taken in our operational network including treatment plants.

SCADA systems are now very reliable and also sophisticated. The new generation of instruments can measure quantitative and qualitative data live. Live information is very powerful and will enable our controllers to manage our systems in a pro-active way. As an example, we can measure pH in the raw sewage and quickly identify an illegal discharge into our system impacting on pH levels. This will help us prevent major pollution threats to our plants and enable preventative measures to be taken.

SCADA will lead to us adopting and using the Internet of Things (IOT) but applied to our business.

Linked to data management is the management of our energy consumption and the consequent effect on sustainability and environmental impact.

As ADSSC we have responsibility to minimize our carbon footprint. This covers many aspects of our work from pumping station efficiency to bio-solids disposal. Last year we published our current position with respect to our carbon usage. This was an important measure for ADSSC as it establishes our benchmark. It is now our challenge to see how much we can improve our current position. A plan is being prepared which will set objectives for us to achieve.

As you can see, the next few years will be every bit as challenging as the previous period. With the guidance and support of the esteemed Executive Council, along with our Chairman and Executive Directors, I am confident we can deliver the challenges we face in the future.

The Future of ADSSC

• We can define databases as a structured collection of accessible data in a structural way, making it an important component of GIS, where data is organized using different types of DBMS.

• There are two types of Database Management Systems:

1. Hybrid Systems where geometric data is stored in a database separate from the metadata database and is the most common type of GIS application where the two bases are linked by an ID-number. The unique ID links geometric shapes and metadata, from internal linking, it is possible to link this single number to external databases through networks where a small internal network may be connected to Intranet or the Internet.

2. Integrated systems in which the engineering and descriptive data are stored in the same database and can be linked to external data sources through the RDBMS interface.

Database Requirements in GIS• GIS databases contains large

amounts of data (coordinates or descriptive) and it is very important to structure these data (which if not structurally structured, the speed of the system response to the various processes will be very long) DBMS, which also helps in answering queries by choosing specific types of data or specific parts of the database.

• Before creating the database, it is important to have a conceptual model of how to organize the data and the structure of it. The process of creating this model called database modeling. The modeling of the database takes into consideration all the participants

as well as covering the technical and non-technical aspects,

1. Rapid change of technology: Technical methods must be stable (in terms of HW equipment and SW software) over time so that the structure of the database does not have to change with any rapid change in the technical methods of equipment and devices (the structure is fixed with changing technology).

2. The geographic database is often long-lived and should therefore be planned on this basis.

3. The database structure should be as simple as possible to facilitate changes, input and extraction of data. Hence, it is not necessary to think of complex solutions when solving simple problems.

4. Users should be isolated from changes made to the database system and therefore changes in technology (the emergence of new programs and equipment) do not affect data manipulation (modification / insertion / extraction ...) or database-user interface.

Different types of models: There are different types of database structures:

1. Hierarchical databases.2. Network databases.3. Relational databases.

First: Hierarchical databases: The database structure creates a tree with very simple links linking different levels and allows the structure to link only one entity from the bottom to one entity from the top and this type of database is not commonly used

Second: Network databases:The structure of this type is more complex than its predecessor, where different entities can be linked together in a flexible way

Third: Relational databases:The structure is more flexible than the two previous types in which entities are stored in tables and the entity is defined and linked to other entities.

There is no profession in the world without challenges and difficulties, but a successful employee or manager must create a stimulating work environment and work to overcome difficulties and set challenges for future goals. As a cohesive team, we can overcome challenges and enjoy the ultimate challenge; one of the challenges facing the internal audit department is the erroneous understanding of our profession. Some believe that the role of the internal auditor is the role of a police officer looking for mistakes and to spy on the employees. The misconception of someemployees is a serious deviation from the real concept of our role in the company as a safety valve against potential risks to the company and work hard to improve the procedures to deliver value added to the company. My other hobby is reading, and it plays a pivotal role in the development and prosperity of our nation, as our Islamic religion urged us as the first verses in the Holy Quran down saying: (Read in the name of your Lord who created you).

As one of the Emirati men working in the area of internal audit, what is your message to your young peers about your work?

Modern risk-based internal audit has become very important because it has an active role in monitoring operational procedures and contributing to measuring its effectiveness. Internal audit in accordance with international concepts and standards is an important element in allocating available resources with the best possible efficiency to achieve the strategic objectives of the institution. One of the efforts is mastering the tasks entrusted to them and diligence in the development of professional skills.

The climate change refers to the seasonal changes taking place over a long period, and it is very important because of the central role played by climate in the formation of natural ecosystems and the economies and human civilizations.

The significant impacts on Earth and ocean temperatures and the decline of sea, as well as some changes in the climate cycle over the course of the 20th century, has been evident in a number of regions of the world. Notably coastal water heaters, rising temperatures, the intensity and frequency of storms, sea levels and temperatures are expected to rise further and extreme weather.

The impacts of climate change are numerous, including impacts on biodiversity, water scarcity and salinity in coastal areas, sea level rise, rising temperatures, rising heatwaves, increased risk of dust storms, and risks on health.

Many factors contribute significantly the climate change. The release of gases such as carbon dioxide that leads to global warming, also the increase in the world population and the attendant increase in the use of cars, trains and other transportation that depend on fuel. In addition to the increasing the electricity use rates produced by burning coal stations, as well as the use of refrigeration and heating devices in oil. In addition, deforestation is an important source of gases because the fewer trees the less carbon dioxide is converted into oxygen.

We must maintain our environment and reduce the risks by improving the collection of data and information on carbon dioxide and other gas emissions, as well as cooperating with concerned institutions to develop clear emissions management policies, as well as developing adaptation strategies, increasing awareness and guidance behavioral change, beside coastal areas must be protected.

AWARENESS SAFETY

Social Media

Social networking are no longer limited to their traditional role. They have become a fertile environment for the circulation of medical information and have participated in transferring the medical profession from closed rooms to cyberspace, which plays a major role in spreading health awareness if properly invested by doctors. Specialists, but the exploitation by some to spread misleading news such as the promotion of some herbal mixtures and supplements, is causing serious damage to people’s health.

There are two kinds of doctors, the first trying to serve the community, the second is consider it as means of fame and publicity, most medical accounts are not managed by doctors, but by ordinary people have nothing to do with medicine and often contain a lot of false information, which is dangerous.

Studies conducted, 60% of the information transmitted by the social media is often vague or false, because it does not come from specialists, and a large percentage of websites and social media are often spread inaccurate health information. Some consider the personal experiences of others to be medical advice, and therefore care must be taken before taking any medication or buying drugs that promoters claim to reduce weight or treat diabetes.

Social media is a double-edged sword that is very useful if it is invested in health awareness and harmful in case it is used to promote health products that may be have serious damage to patients' health.

Unfortunately, some companies have taken social media to fight their competitors and often spread frightening warnings about medicines. They are most the time flawed and baseless. Everyone should assume their societal responsibilities and provide people with useful information. Instead of spreading the poison of fabricated news that is not true.

Social media are an important source of health awareness and knowledge among people, as they entered all houses without permission, but at the same time, they remain a double-edged sword. These services have many cautions, as well as many advantages.
