Combo Teacher Test

• Combination of FnM and PoM content.

• Please list the last 4 digits of social and the grade you are currently teaching.

• Please—no talking during test—when finished, you can take a break.

ORQ Scoring

Page 11: Partnering to Progress K-5 Science Alliance

Guidelines for Today

• We will be working in 3 groups grading 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade ORQs.

• Before grading, write the answer to each question you’ve been assigned. This will help you to trouble shoot the question.

• As a group, develop a scoring guide.

• Begin grading.

• Transfer scores to student roster.

Page 12: Partnering to Progress K-5 Science Alliance

Scoring Guide Rules of Thumb

• 4—All parts correct; insightful and/or elaborated descriptions/explanations (not necessarily extensions)

• 3—All parts correct• 2—something has to be correct in every

part of the question (A, B, C)—this is not a 50-50 determination

• 1—something has to be correct• 0—Nothing is correct

Framework and Progressions

• Skim over the introduction.• List the 3 ways the framework is moving to a

more coherent vision. How is this similar & different to what we are currently doing?

• There are 5 principles for this framework. Please read your assigned principle, summarize, and be ready to share whole group.– Children are Born Investigators—KDG– Understanding Develops Over Time--1st and 5th

– Science is More than a Body of Knowledge—2nd

– Connecting to Students’ Interests & Experiences—3rd

– Promoting Equity—4th

Page 14: Partnering to Progress K-5 Science Alliance

Framework and Progressions

• Structure:– Disciplinary Ideas

• Physical, Life, Earth/Space, Engineering/Technology

– Cross-Cutting Elements• Implications across all domains

– Scientific– Science, Engineering, Technology & Society

– Practices• Please read Dimension 3: Practices on page 6…How

is practice different from skill?

Page 15: Partnering to Progress K-5 Science Alliance

The role of science education is not to teach all the facts, but rather to prepare students with enough core

knowledge, and to develop their ability to interpret claims and evidence so that they can be

informed consumers of information….

From the Science Standards Framework

Page 16: Partnering to Progress K-5 Science Alliance

Learning Progressions

• What does this mean for each individual grade?

• What are some things to consider?

• How have our P2P units met this model?

Page 17: Partnering to Progress K-5 Science Alliance

Science Literacy Standards

• Embedded grades K-5

• 3 types of writing:– Argument– Explanatory– Informative

Page 18: Partnering to Progress K-5 Science Alliance

Let’s Take a Closer Look

• Read over the Anchor Standards for Reading and Writing for grades K-5.

• What does this look like for writing an argument in science?

• Examine the K-8 standards for writing an argument.

• Use the organizer to note the differences as you progress through the grade levels.

Page 19: Partnering to Progress K-5 Science Alliance

Helping Students to Write Scientifically

• Students have to be explicitly taught to write in this way.

• What tools do we have available to help us do this?

• Where in our units would writing an argument naturally fit?

For September 30

• Bring student POST PoM tests to score.

• Please have reporting form filled out prior (less the ORQ score).

• We will be having a celebration!
