Partner Information for the Trade and Producers More Naturland in Germany In Germany there is great demand for do- mestic organic products. It is all the more pleasing to note the significant increase in growth which Naturland was able to record in 2016, particularly in Germany. With this additional 9.4%, 165,000 hectares of farmland and 54,000 hectares of woodland are now being managed according to the Naturland standards. The number of Ger- man farms has also increased by 7.3% to 3,127. Steffen Reese, the general manager of Naturland, welcomes this development and sees it as a steady trend. The organic organisation’s search for farms prepared to convert to organic can, however, only meet with success if politicians at last provide legal certainty. In this context Reese points to the EU organic regulation which even now after three years of negotiations has not been able to offer any solutions. Mobilisation for sustainability At this year’s Biofach, Naturland and its part- ners are focusing on the sustainability goals set by the UN 2030 Agenda. They intend in particular to show which goals they are already actually achieving, and to motivate the visitors to the trade fair to join in. At a series of events entitled “Talk and Taste” which are to take place from Wednesday to Friday in pavilion 6-361, three important goals in particular are being considered: “Zero hunger” (goal no. 2), “Responsible consumption and production” (goal no. 12) and “Life below water” (goal no. 14). In this context Naturland and its partners are presenting select initiatives and projects in the fields of organic and fair trade, organic aquaculture and sustainable fishery. > For more on “Talk and Taste”, see www.naturland.de/de/partner/messen/ biofach-2017.html If we are serious about reaching the 17 sustainability goals set out in the UN 2030 Agenda, organic combined with fair trade will have to be given centre stage. An agricultural system designed to preserve resources, encourage small-scale farming structures, produce food in a sustainable manner and treat all the partners involved fairly: this is not a deluded venture but indeed a principle of survival. We have asked our Naturland partners where they see themselves in this plan of action. Their responses show the contributions they are already making in organic and social terms. It was a sad start to the year for Naturland. Invitation to a world tour The Fair Trade Cooperative dwp eG, located in Ravensburg, Germany, has created a special organic fruit tea of Egyptian lemon grass and Argentinian chokeberries, apples and rosehips, which bears the lovely name of “Traumreise” (dream journey) and is being marketed under the “Naturland Fair” logo. This well-balanced blend glows garnet-red in the cup and promises a delicious tea treat whatever the season: in the winter it provides comforting warmth, and in the summer fruity refreshment in the form of iced tea. Contact: Martin Lang, [email protected] Spices in Naturland quality The product range of the organic whole-saler dennree from Töpen in Upper Fran-conia, Germany, comprises some 12,000 articles. An important role is played here by the products which are marketed under their own brand name. This includes a comprehensive dennree range of herbs and spices which are certified to the Naturland standards. It comprises mono-products such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, basil and rosemary as well as aromatic blends such as curry, herbes de Provence, pizza and salad seasoning. Full organic variety from Bavaria organic agriculture has a long history at the Naturland farm Lex. This family run enterprise in close vicinity of the city of Munich converted to organic in the 1970s and shortly afterwards expanded to include a mill and a grain cleaning plant with a spelt dehulling component. Since then they have been supplying proces-sors, wholesalers and retailers with spelt, buckwheat, brown millet, soya, potatoes and maize grown for human consumption. Besides this, they have a seed propagation project for various cereals and green manuring crops. Contact: Lorenz Lex, [email protected] Presenting Drückeberger Sonnentracht is a new Naturland partner. This Bremen enterprise specialises in the processing and bottling of alternative sweeteners and coconut products. Under the name of drückeberger they are producing a range of products on the basis of agave, certified to the Naturland standards, which is to make its debut at the Biofach in Nuremberg. Their instant green tea, instant black tea, instant coffee and instant cocoa all promise to deliver a sweet drinking treat in a jiffy. Contact: Janna Möllers, [email protected] Pumpkins and potatoes for vegan customers Biocyclic Network has produced the first vegan-grown Hokkaido’s and potatoes. Close to 80 smallholding Naturland family farms in Cyprus, Crete, the Peloponnese and Epirus are members of this network and also grow oranges, lemons, man-darins, kiwis, sultana grapes, beetroot and olives according to biocyclic vegan principles. Their products are distributed by o.M.E.N., an export association also certified to the Naturland standards, which sets store by a vegan lifestyle. Contact: www.biocyclic-network.net

Given the diversity of organically produced wines, it is quite a challenge for the trade to decide on the make-up of their product range and to advise their customers accordingly. The World of Experience Wine at the Biofach is a good opportunity to get to know the finest wines first-hand and to compare notes with experienced vintners and wine experts on the latest trends and developments on the organic wine market.

Also represented are four Naturland vintners: Weingut Roth from Wiesen-bronn, Weingut Seck from dolgesheim, Weingut Schloss Saaleck from Hammelburg, and Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein. Last year the latter was the winner of a gold medal presented at the international wine award ceremony “Munus Vini Biofach”. Besides these, LaSelva, the Tuscan delicatessen producer, the wine of which likewise was awarded gold in 2016, will also be represented at the Naturland booth in pavilion 6/6.

A total of 30 vintners in Germany manage their vineyards according to the Naturland standards and in doing so are producing first-class quality wines. Time and again they are making names for themselves in national and international competitions and are recommended by renowned wine guides.

Tomato juice with the Naturland logo Jacoby, a juice producer, harvests many of its top-grade ingredients from its own organic fruit farm or from meadow orchards in Markgräflerland. The remainder are produced by reliable partners under contract to produce, e. g., tomatoes to the Naturland standards. The sun-ripened fruits are gently pressed imme-diately upon arrival to preserve the vitamins and to produce a full-flavoured juice which is seasoned with a little sea-salt and sold to the trade in 0.5 litre Tetra Paks. Contact: Michael Grese, [email protected] EdelHell wins a silver medal The golden yellow Lammsbräu EdelHell beer is a harmonious blend of a mild hop note with full malt aroma. Its delicate fruity flavours guarantee a refreshing sparkling taste expe-rience, with its fine-pored head and smooth, round after-taste. This is also the reason this beer won the silver medal as one of Bavaria’s best organic products. So far this speciality, which is certified to the Naturland standards, was only available in the 0.5 litre reusable glass bottle. As of 1st February it will also be sold in 0.33 litre reusable glass bottles. Contact: [email protected] Gin for connoisseurs and gourmets domäne Homburger Hof was established in the 16th century. Today the Schanz family farms the land there and also manages a farm distillery certified to the Naturland standards. Their top-grade gin is brewed over a wood fire in a copper pot-still and acquires its fine base note from juniper, whilst their own home-grown organic herbs round off the taste harmoniously. An attractive tasting set allows the connoisseur to get to know all the facets of Monsieur Gin, either straight, with sloe liqueur or matured in an oak vat. Contact: tel. +49 (0)7476 9465020 or [email protected] Fair-trade version of organic wine There are now 606 products on the market bearing the “Naturland Fair” logo, and among them are the fine wines of Weingut Seck. This family-run enterprise in dolgesheim in the German region of Rheinhessen was one of the first Naturland partners to opt for voluntary supplementary certification immediately upon the introduction of the “Naturland Fair” standards. In consequence, the enterprise expanded its social involvement: part of the profit from Seck Pur is used to finance a children’s home run by Juntos e.V. in Chile.
