Participant Biographies Santiago Alba-Corral, Associate Director of Food Security, IDRC is responsible for programming and managing the team in Agriculture and Food Security and Livestock Health. Previously he served as Senior Director for International Development at CARE Canada. After working for 10 years in rural development and environmental issues based in Europe, he worked as a Technical Advisor with the International Aid Agency of Spain (AECI) in southern Africa. He has worked extensively internationally, mostly in Africa and the Middle East. Santiago was member of the UNICEF lead Global Nutritional Cluster, and the inception committee of the Global Food Security Cluster lead by WFP and FAO. Dr Irene Annor-Frempong, Director for Research and Innovation Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) is an Animal Scientist with a focus on research methodology and has over 25 years of rich experience as a research scientist, manager and educationist, working in research institutes and Universities in Switzerland, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ghana, Nigeria and Lesotho. A thought leader in agricultural research for development in Africa, she currently leads the strategic orientation of FARA including the operationalization of the continental framework on the ‘Science Agenda for Agriculture in Africa’ (S3A) in African countries. A Ghanaian by birth, Irene holds a PhD from the Veterinary School, University of Bristol, UK, an MSc in Animal Production Science from Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands, and BSc. (Hons) Agriculture and a Diploma (Education) both from University of Cape Coast, Ghana. Thomas Arnold, European Commission holds the position of Advisor "Sustainable Bioeconomy" in the Directorate-General Research and Innovation. Santiago Alba-Corral, Associate Director of Food Security, IDRC is responsible for programming and managing the team in Agriculture and Food Security and Livestock Health. Lorenzo Giovanni Bellù, Team Leader, FAO Global Perspectives Studies Team.As senior economist, Lorenzo focuses on global and country-level development processes and related implications for food and agriculture; socio-economic and environmental impact assessment of policies; policy impact analysis by means of Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) and other quantitative analysis tools. He has used scenario-building for assessments for long-term development patterns, with a focus on cross-country interdependencies and implications for poverty, food security, agriculture and natural resource use, and backstopping the development of quantitative economic models and other tools for global scenario analysis.

Professor Tim Benton, Dean of Strategic Research Initiatives, University of Leeds and Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Energy, Environment and Resources Department at the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House, UK. From 2011-2016 he was the “Champion” of the UK’s Global Food Security programme which was a multi-agency partnership of the UK’s public bodies (government departments, devolved governments and research councils) with an interest in the challenges around food. The key role of GFS was to undertake systemic analysis and horizon scanning to identify research priorities to mitigate the challenges of providing sufficient, sustainable and nutritious diets for all. Tim has published over 150 academic papers, many on the topics of agriculture and its sustainability. His particular interest is food system resilience in the face of climate change.

Dr. Ir. Robin Bourgeois, Senior Researcher, CIRAD is a foresight practitioner and senior researcher at CIRAD, currently posted at the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovation (GovInn) in South Africa. His current research activities focus on the futures of governance and the governance of the future, futures literacy as a capability and anticipation as an emancipatory process. He is a member of the World Futures Studies Federation and member of the Editorial Board of the journal “Futures and Foresight Science”. He has worked at GFAR in Rome, CAPSA in Indonesia, IICA in Costa Rica and ISNAR in the Netherlands.

Professor Martin Broadley, Professor of Plant Nutrition, University of Nottingham. His research seeks to increase our understanding of mineral nutrient dynamics in agriculture and food systems. A particular focus is on improving the nutritional quality of crops using agronomic and genetic approaches, and the movement of nutrients to humans and livestock diets. This work involves collaborations with soil and crop scientists, human/animal nutritionists, and social scientists. Collaborations include the development of long-term research and training partnerships with higher education and government research institutes in sub-Saharan Africa. Recent research highlights include the identification and characterisation of spatial controls of micronutrient dynamics in Malawian food systems, and the development of novel approaches to assess the potential of dietary diversification and agronomy to alleviate dietary micronutrient deficiencies (‘hidden hunger’). Publications at Scopus Author ID 7003414033. Martin holds a part-time Senior Research Fellow position (Agriculture and Food Systems), in the Research and Evidence Division at the Department for International Development (DFID), UK.

Martin Bwalya, Head of Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency (remote presentation) has over twenty years of active and practical experience working on Africa’s development field having worked in international organisations with broader focus on multi-national development initiatives, brokering investment financing partnerships for regional and country level programmes and impact reporting. In addition to working intensively with and within the African Union institutions—the African Union Commission, the NEPAD Agency and the Regional Economic Communities, Martin has wide and practical experience in the development, negotiating and management of partnerships with multilateral and bilateral institutions including the UN Agencies (FAO, WFP, UNCTAD, UNEP and UNDP) and others (e.g. World Bank, IFAD, AfDB), and institutions such as the G8 and G20. He has worked on development and management of collaboration and programming along the South-South partnerships with state and non-state players in South America (Brazil, Colombia & Argentina) and China.

Andrew Campbell, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). Andrew’s research interests span the interactions between climate, water, energy and agrifood systems, and the interface between knowledge, science and policy. He was previously Director of the Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods (RIEL) at Charles Darwin University, CEO of Land & Water Australia, Managing Director of Triple Helix Consulting, and Senior Executive in the Australian Government. He was Australia's first National Landcare Facilitator, and still manages a family farm in western Victoria, where his family has been farming since the 1860s.

Marco Sánchez Cantillo, Deputy Director, Agricultural Economics DivisionFAO. Previously, he was associated with the Development Policy Analysis Division (DPAD) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) (2006 –2017) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (2004-2006). He has also been consultant to international organizations such as UNDP, IFPRI and IADB (2000-2004) and worked as a lecturer and researcher at National University of Costa Rica (1995-1999) and the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University (ISS) in the Netherlands (2000-2004). He has a respectable record of publications on cross-cutting economic development issues including in peer-reviewed international journals and books. He also specializes in the use of computable general equilibrium models and survey-based microsimulation for analysis of development policies that tackle issues regarding agriculture, climate, poverty and inequality.

Patrick Caron, CIRAD & Montpellier University of Excellence holds a doctorate in veterinary sciences and PhD in development geography. His work relates to the role of territories in rural change. He joined CIRAD in 1988 and was General Director for research and strategy from 2010 to 2016. From 2001 to 2004, he was scientific director of the “Territories, Environment and People" department before being director of the department "Environments and Societies" from 2007 to 2010. He has been involved in many international expertise initiatives. He was appointed as the Chair of the High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) of the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS) in November 2015.

Paula Chalinder, Head of Professions, Livelihoods, DFID leads on professional and technical excellence in policy development and programming practice in professional areas related to rural livelihoods. She has twenty years’ experience with DFID, working in sub-Saharan Africa and with teams in Asia as a Senior Adviser, responsible for country strategy and portfolios of large programs in trans-boundary water, land reform, forestry and environmental management, food security, climate change whilst developing donor harmonization and managing relationships with partners. Paula was formerly a Research Associate with the International Institute for Environment and Development; worked as a community development volunteer with a rural community in southern Africa and with the UK Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

Kuhu Chatterjee, Program Coordinator, ACIAR SDIP has over 25 years of experience in the bilateral aid program management environment for the aid programs of the UK and Australia with India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. She has managed research collaborations in international organisations in the area of forestry, water management and agriculture. Prior to this she has had scientific research experience in aquatic ecology having a PhD in Aquatic ecology. Kuhu has extensive networks within international, and South Asian research institutions, government agencies and NGOs. She has well developed communication skills and is proficient in Bangla, Hindi and Urdu spoken in South Asia.

Fabrice DeClerck, Science Director, EAT leads the development of EAT research and synthesis science. With the Stockholm Resilience Center, EAT’s Science Secretariat, he works closely with EAT partners and programs as the interface between science and practice. Fabrice’s professional background is in agricultural and environmental sciences with more than a decade focusing on sustainable development in Latin America, Africa, and South East Asia. His collaborations with the health and nutrition community date back to 2004 focusing on dietary and environmental health in the Sustainable Development Goals. Fabrice maintains a role as Sr. Scientist at Bioversity International, a member center of the CGIAR. His engagements with EAT enable him to engage closely with UN Agencies such has FAO, UNDP, UNICEF, and UNEP; progressive private sector partners, and individual farmers and farming communities on the radical food transformation needed in support of human health and environmental sustainability.

Sean de Cleene, Head of Food Systems Initiative, World Economic Forum and a Member of the Executive Committee. Formerly, he was the Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships at AGRA. Prior to this, he held senior positions in the private sector, primarily as the Senior Vice President Global Initiatives, Strategy and Business Development for Yara International, the world’s leading global crop nutrition company. Sean has strong private sector, NGO, entrepreneurship and development experience. He was also formerly the Chair of the World Economic Forum New Vision for Agriculture Project Board incorporating multistakeholder partnerships in 14 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America including partnerships forming both Grow Africa and Grow Asia. He is Co-Chair Emeritus Grow Africa. He was a former special advisor to the UN Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General on Food Security and Nutrition.

Dr Emile Frison is a Belgian national with a career in international agricultural research for development. He worked in Africa for six years on agricultural research and development, in Nigeria and Mauritania. In 2003, he became Director General of Bioversity International and developed a strategy entitled “Diversity for Well-being” focusing on the contribution that agricultural biodiversity makes to the nutritional quality of diets and to the sustainability, resilience and productivity of smallholder agriculture. In 2015, he joined the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems. Dr Frison is the lead author of the IPES-Food 2016 report “From Uniformity to Diversity: a paradigm shift from industrial agriculture to diversified agroecological systems”. He is a Member of the Board of Directors of EcoAgriculture Partners.

Marcelo Galdos, Academic Fellow, University of Leeds graduated in International Agricultural Development, and has experience in agricultural extension work in Africa and South America. His postgraduate studies were in soil conservation, soil carbon modelling and life cycle assessment. His main research interest is in the role of soil health in climate-smart agriculture using measurements, modelling and spatial analysis. His research aims at evaluating different land use, crop management and climate change scenarios, supporting stakeholders in the development and implementation of mitigation and adaptation strategies. He has recently joined the University of Leeds as University Academic Fellow in Modelling Food Security and Climate Impacts.

Peter Gardiner, Senior Manager Program Performance, CGIAR System Organization and was formerly the Executive Director of the CGIAR -ISPC Secretariat.

Joost Guijt, Advisor – Inclusive Agrimarkets, Wageningen University & Research. Joost’s work focuses on developing more inclusive ways of doing agribusiness. Driving his work is the question: how can we learn more effectively from the many inclusive agribusiness ventures being undertaken? He actively seeks collaboration with others - be they business, knowledge institutes, consultancies, donors - to share approaches, findings, experiences. Much comes back under the informal network "Seas of Change". Learning together more effectively also means collaborating more effectively and Joost also does much on multi-stakeholder collaborations and public private partnerships. He helped set up and is part of the MT of the PPPLab, which seeks to enhance the relevance and effectiveness of (Dutch publicly co-funded) PPPs.

Saher Hasnain, Researcher, Environmental Change Institute is a researcher with the Food System Group, and the Foresight4Food Initiative. She has previously worked as Education Coordinator for the Innovative Food Systems Teaching and Learning programme (IFSTAL) with the ECI Food Systems Group. Trained as an environmental scientist, Saher has focused on environmental health and food systems in urban areas. For her doctoral research, she examined the influence of factors such as fuel policies, urban design, violence, and regional and global food system transformation on food consumption behaviour and spatial mobility in urban Pakistan. Saher has previously worked on environmental health issues through photovoice and mapping at the University of Pennsylvania, and the development of national energy management cultures at Bahria University, Pakistan.

Petr Havlik, Deputy Program Director, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. He is the major developer of the global agricultural and forest sector economic model GLOBIOM, and currently leads a team of more than 20 scientists further developing and implementing the model. Petr’s research interests are in designing solutions to satisfy the future needs of humanity in terms of food, fibre and fuel, climate change mitigation, and ecosystems services in general, within the limited resources of land and water under climate change.

David Hegwood, Senior Food Security Advisor, USAID joined USAID in 2009. As head of the Global Engagement and Strategy Team in the Bureau of Food Security, he manages USAID engagement in a wide range of global policy issues, including the G20, the G7, the Committee on World Food Security, and the Post-2015 MDG process. He previously served as the Minister-Counsellor for Agricultural Affairs at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations Agencies in Rome, Italy and as Special Counsel to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

Patrick Herlant, Policy Officer for Food Security, Agriculture and Rural Development, DEVCO where he has been since 2016. Mainly tasked with policy analysis and coordination, he is focal point on rural transformation, territorial and cross-sector approaches and sustainable food systems. As a development practitioner, Patrick was responsible for the design and implementation of agricultural and rural development interventions in Tunisia, Armenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albania (IFAD), agricultural & rural development policy dialogue in Turkey (EEAS), quality support on food security and rural development at DEVCO HQ (thematic unit), food security and environment in Haiti (EU Delegation) while he also implemented several NRM and sustainable agriculture programmes in South/Central America and Madagascar (Swiss Technical Cooperation). An Agricultural Engineer by training (’82), Patrick also holds a Masters in Tropical Forestry (’96) and an MBA in International Business (‘03).

Dr Ylva Hillbur, Pro vice-Chancellor, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences has responsibility for international relations, and has been at SLU since 2017. From 2012 to 2017 she held the position as Deputy director general, research, at the one of the CGIAR institutes, IITA, based in Nigeria. Prior to joining IITA, Hillbur worked for almost 20 years at SLU, where her research focused on insect chemical ecology and plant protection. From 2006-2012 she was head of the Department of Plant Protection Biology. Ylva obtained her PhD at SLU in 2001, was appointed associate professor in 2012 and was also appointed adjunct associate professor at Addis Ababa University. She is a board member of ICIPE in Nairobi, and SWEDESD at Uppsala University.

Mark Holderness, Executive Secretary, GFAR, the global forum on agricultural research and innovation. GFAR is a unique multi-stakeholder forum involving over 440 Partner networks and organizations from across all sectors. Through their collective actions, Partners in GFAR work to make agri-food research and innovation more effective, responsive and equitable, towards Sustainable Development outcomes. Previously, Mark worked for the intergovernmental agency CABI, as Director of Agriculture and as a researcher and adviser to many agricultural programmes around the world. Originally a plant pathologist, he began his career working for the cocoa farmers of Papua New Guinea.

Dr Bernard Hubert, Agropolis International is a member of the French Académie d'Agriculture, and is Emeritus Senior scientist at the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) and Professor at the Advanced School for the Social Sciences (EHESS). Trained as an ecologist (his thesis concerned functional ecology in Western Africa), his work has broadened as he has questioned the role of human activities in this setting, seeking to understand the contribution of the social sciences to issues in the life sciences. This approach led him to reflect upon cross disciplinary studies‐ and the conduct of interventional, mission oriented research with the‐ actors concerned. Bernard worked as lead author for the “natural resources use regimes” of the “global” report of the "International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development" (IAASTD). After 8 years as Chair of Agropolis International in Montpellier, since January 2018 he has been acting as Advisor to the new President. Since 2010, he has chaired the French CRAI (Commission de la Recherche Agronomique Internationale), which groups together 5 Research organizations and 3 Ministries.

John Ingram, Food Systems Programme Leader, Environmental Change Institute. John’s interests are in the conceptual framing of food systems; the interactions among the many actors involved and their varied activities, and the outcomes of their activities for food security, livelihoods and environment; and food system resilience. He has designed and led regional food system research projects in Europe, south Asia, southern Africa and the Caribbean and has conceived, developed and led a range of major international research initiatives. He has had substantial interaction with FAO, UNEP and CGIAR and many other international organisations, with national departments and agencies, with NGOs, and with businesses in the food sector helping to establish research on the links between food security and environment through the analysis of food systems. In addition to leading the food system research group within ECI, he also leads the multi-university post-graduate food systems training programme (IFSTAL) and coordinates the UK Global Food Security programme ‘Resilience of the UK Food System’. He is an Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow at Somerville College.

Xiaoting Hou Jones, Researcher, IIED is an expert in political economy and has more than ten years experience in building multi-stakeholder partnerships in the forestry sector. She has a research background in a variety of areas of sustainable development and climate change mitigation and adaptation ranging from industry ecology, supply chain management, food demand and forests in sub-Saharan Africa, and REDD+. She is currently supporting the design and implementation of the SENTINEL project, leading research on managing trade-offs between food production and agricultural development in Ethiopia, Ghana, and Zambia.

Marie de Lattre-Gasquet, Researcher, ‘Actors, Resources and Territories in Development’ (ART-Dev), CIRAD has coordinated the Agrimonde-Terra foresight exercise on land use and food security in 2050 on behalf of CIRAD. She is currently working on its use as a tool for dialogue at national and territorial levels, especially in Tunisia, and researching about spatial scaling and transitions. Marie has worked at CIRAD as project manager in external relations and scientific directions, advisor to the DG and secretary to the Ethics Committee, in the science team of the CGIAR System Management Office, and at the French National Research Agency (ANR). Marie is a board member of Futuribles and AEI (International association for sustainable intensive agriculture). She holds an MBA and a PhD in management and economics, and is auditor of IHEST (Institute for advanced studies in science and society).

Pedro Luiz Oliveira de Almeida Machado, Coordinator, Embrapa Labex Europe Programme has a PhD in Soil Science at the Universitaet fuer Bodenkultur (BOKU) Vienna, Austria. Under his administration as Director General of the Embrapa Rice and Beans Research Centre, in Brazil (2009-2013), low-carbon agriculture including mixed farming systems under zero tillage, and biological nitrogen fixation for common beans was strongly promoted as part of the Brazilian ABC Plan. As an expert in soil conservation programmes, he has experience in technology transfer and rural extension, particularly regarding land use and land management change to promote sustainable intensification. At present, Pedro is the Coordinator of the Embrapa Labex Europe Programme based in France, an innovative procedure of Embrapa to set up international cooperation on cutting-edge topics with world-class scientific partners.

Agnes Martin, Health and Diet Advocacy Director, Danone is the Health and Diet Advocacy Director for Danone, with extensive experience with essential diary and plant-based nutrition research, defining and implementing nutrition strategy in Europe. She has a PhD in Ecology from Paris-Sud University.

Dr Martin Melin , Researcher, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. His research is on farm business management and he teaches leadership and organisation for undergraduates. Martin coordinates the H2020-project NEXTFOOD – educating the next generation of professionals in the agrifood system. The overall aim of NEXTFOOD is to generate an innovative European science and education road map for sustainable agriculture along the value chain from research via production into application.

Alexandre Meybeck, Senior Adviser (FAO) on Agriculture, Environment and Climate Change to the Assistant Director General in charge of the Agriculture and Consumer Protection Department. He is the coordinator of the FAO/UNEP Sustainable Food Systems programme. He has worked extensively on issues related to sustainability, food security and nutrition at both national and international levels with numerous publications on climate change and agriculture, sustainable food systems, sustainable diets. Prior to joining FAO, Alexandre served in the French Ministry of Agriculture as Head of the Environment and Rural Areas Unit and Head of the Environmental Strategies and Climate Change Unit.

Saeed Moghayer , Senior Researcher, Wageningen Economic Research works on the economics of agri-food sustainability at WEcR. He holds a PhD in Economics from University of Amsterdam and a MSc in Mathematics from Utrecht University. Prior to WEcR, he worked as a Researcher at TNO on the development and application of the CGE model EXIOMOD for the evaluation of climate mitigation and resource efficiency policies in major EU projects. Saeed’s current activities include co-development and application of WEcR’s CGE model MAGNeT in the fields of climate change and food security, and research on complex system approaches in circular food systems.

Olivier Mora, Chief of foresight – DEPE, INRA. Olivier heads the foresight pole of the Delegation for scientific expertise, foresight and advanced studies (DEPE) of the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) in Paris. Trained in agricultural sciences and sociology, since 2006, he has conducted foresight studies at regional, national and global scales about rural areas, uses of agricultural biomass, and regional forests in the face of climate change. He was one of the co-coordinators of the Agrimonde-Terra foresight, a joint project of INRA and CIRAD about land use and global food security in 2050. He is a member of several foresight communities such as Forward Thinking Platform (International platform on futures of agriculture), Prosper (Network of foresight community of French public research), and is co-manager of the working group on foresight of the French national alliance for research on the environment (AllEnvi).

Aline Mosnier, Research Scholar – IIASA, ESM Program. Aline has been Research Scholar with IIASA’s Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program since 2008. She has mainly contributed to the development of GLOBIOM, a global economic land use model. Her main contribution regarding model development is the calibration of international trade. She has also worked on biofuels policies and climate change mitigation, deforestation and REDD+ initiative, impacts and adaptation to climate change, smallholders and subsistence farming, oil palm suitability and past expansion, and more recently, climate smart agriculture. She has led the adaptation of GLOBIOM for the Congo Basin, Brazil and Indonesia.

Maliha Muzammil, Researcher, Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford and is the South Asia Regional Scenarios Coordinator for the CCAFS Future Scenarios project. She develops socio-economic and climate scenarios at regional levels as a tool for strategic policy planning and investment decisions. She is a part of the RE-IMAGINE: re-imagining climate governance project team at Utrecht University from the University of Oxford. The RE-IMAGINE project builds on the CCAFS Scenarios Project combining the climate foresight expertise in this project with global climate governance expertise and regional expertise and experience among the participating partners. Maliha also works on the zero hunger, zero emissions project at the ECI which aims to identify potential synergies and trade-offs between alternative development pathways to achieving the zero emissions goal adopted in the Paris Agreement and the zero hunger goal adopted under the SDG, particularly for people living in poverty. Maliha has submitted her PhD thesis at SOAS, University of London. Her research examines the opportunities and barriers for low carbon, climate resilient pathways in least developed countries using a political economy approach.

David Nabarro, UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Sustainable Development and Climate Change (currently on leave, while campaigning to become Director-General of the World Health Organization). He works on behalf of the UN to promote the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Climate Change. David also serves as Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Food Security and Nutrition, a position he has held since 2009. These appointments follow an extensive career in global health, nutrition and development, beginning as a District Child Health Officer in Dhankuta District, Nepal. Since then, David has played a catalytic role in the response to several global emergencies, such as the Avian and Human Influenza epidemic of 2005, crisis response operations in Darfur, Sudan, and in countries affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and Tsunami. He also led the UN responses to Ebola in West Africa, and the Cholera outbreak in Haiti.

Professor Zenda Ofir is a South African independent evaluator with a PhD in Chemistry. She works across Africa and Asia, and from local to global level, on the interface of science, development and evaluation. She has a special interest in the SDGs, transformational systems change, and national to global development trajectories. A former AfrEA President, IOCE Vice-President and AEA Board member, Zenda is currently Honorary Professor at Stellenbosch University, IDEAS Vice-President and steering committee member of the emerging South-South Collaboration on Evaluation Initiative. In her earlier career she was a senior program manager at a South African science council and later Director of Research at the University of Pretoria. She is currently based near Geneva, Switzerland.

Mr Charles Owuor, Manager for Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning, RUFORUM joined the Secretariat in April 2015 as Programme Officer for Monitoring and Evaluation and was appointed to his current position in May 2016. He has over 15 years’ experience in Development Programming, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation. He has led development and implementation of Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning systems that enhance organizational 360 degree accountability, strengthen innovative and efficient ways of providing impactful program delivery mechanisms. These systems support wider organizational learning and knowledge management through utilizing existing reflective learning spaces within the broad organizational structure. He is a RUFORUM Alumni with an MSc Degree in Soil Science from Makerere University and is currently a PhD fellow of Agricultural Economics at Kenyatta University.

Kimberly Pfeifer, Research Director, Oxfam America serves as the editor of Oxfam America's Research Backgrounder Series, and is a co-founder and chair the Oxfam Research Network. She has managed numerous research projects on issues of biotechnology, food security, agricultural innovation, trade, extractive industries, and economic inequality. Kimberly also worked for the AFL-CIO with the Center for Strategic Research; and for the Aga Khan Foundation in Zanzibar, Tanzania. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Florida in Political Science. Mostly recently, she was an Executive in Residence with the Atkinson Center for Sustainable Future at Cornell University.

John Roy Porter, University of Copenhagen is an internationally known agro-ecological scientist with an expertise in ecosystem services in agro-ecosystems, including agro-ecology, simulation modelling and food system ecology. His main contribution has been multi-disciplinary and collaborative experimental and modelling work in the response of arable crops, energy crops and complex agro-ecosystems to their environment with an emphasis on climate change, ecosystem services and food systems. From 2011 to 2014 John led the writing of the critically important chapter for the IPCC 5th Assessment in Working Group 2 on food production systems and food security. This chapter was one of the most cited from the IPCC 5th Assessment and formed important scientific bedrock of the COP21 agreement in Paris in 2015.

Marie-Hélène Schwoob, Research Fellow, IDDRI is an agronomist and political scientist, whose main research areas focus on the sustainability and transformation of agriculture and food systems. In particular, she coordinates the Agricultural Transformation Pathways Initiative (ATPI), which aims to support countries in the formulation and implementation of national trajectories of transformation towards more sustainable systems. The initiative is conducted in partnership with research centres such as Wageningen University and under the aegis of UN-SDSN, and includes seven countries. Marie-Hélène has a multidisciplinary background (AgroParisTech-Sciences Po Paris) and was previously responsible for implementing the Energy-Environment program at the think tank Asia Centre, before joining IDDRI in 2011 to contribute to research on agriculture and food, in parallel with a doctorate in political science on Chinese agricultural modernization (thesis supported in 2015). In addition, Marie-Hélène teaches at Sciences Po Paris, Paris Dauphine University and Paris Sud University. She is also a member of the Demeter editorial board.

Rachid Serraj, Senior Agricultural Research Officer, CGIAR joined the ISPC Secretariat in December 2012, coming from ICARDA where he served as director of the research program on diversification and sustainable intensification of production systems (DSIPS) in Central and West Asia and North Africa. Rachid is a crop scientist with a broad production systems background, having worked for more than 25 years with national and international research organizations. He holds a PhD in Agronomy and Crop Science from the University of Montpellier, and has published more than 200 scientific publications on a wide range of topics.

Achmad Suryana, Senior Researcher, Indonesian Center for Agricultural Socio-Economic and Policy Studies (ICASEPS). Achmad was appointed as Director General of the Indonesian Agency for Food Security (2000-2004 and 2008-2014) and Director General of the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (2004-2008), in the Ministry of Agriculture. He earned his engineering degree and Master of Science in agricultural economics from Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia and obtained a PhD in the field of agricultural economics from North Carolina State University, USA in 1986. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Rice Research Institute 2008-2013 and became chair of Policy Partnership for Food Security, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (PPFS-APEC) in 2013.

Zenia Tata, Vice President – Global Impact Strategy, X Prize Foundation, (remote presentation) has more than 21 years of experience in program design, management and business development for not-for-profit organizations and social enterprises. Her work has spanned 20 countries in Asia, Africa, and Central America, with diverse issues ranging from water and food scarcity, economic enhancement, climate change, land rights, healthcare, education and child welfare. Zenia has consulted with academic institutions such as MIT’s D-Lab, private sector social enterprises such as Spring Health and Medeem, technology incubators such as D-Rev, impact investment groups such as Beyond Capital, funders such as Nike, Soros’ Open Society Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations and large international NGOs such as Concern Worldwide. Prior to this, she was the Executive Director of International Development Enterprises (iDE) USA. iDE pioneered market-based approaches to increase income for impoverished farm families in Asia and Africa and has doubled the incomes of 20 million people living in abject poverty.

Vanessa Taylor, Assistant Director – Global Food and Agriculture Program, Chicago Council on Global Affairs oversees the content development and production for a portfolio of research/policy reports and publications. In her previous roles, Vanessa worked across sectors to implement sustainability strategies and programs, most recently advising food and beverage companies around responsible supply chain practices and business development. Vanessa has extensive international experience in Europe, Latin America, East and South Asia, including service as a USAID grantee with the Farmer-to-Farmer Program in Nepal supporting smallholder farmers through agricultural extension programs. Vanessa holds dual US and EU (Finland) citizenship, a BA in international relations and anthropology from UC San Diego, and a Master of Development Practice (MDP) in sustainable food and agricultural systems from UC Berkeley.

Sebastien Treyer, Chair, Scientific and Technical Committee, French Facility for the Global Environment (FFEM) is a specialist of foresight and futures studies for sustainability transitions and international negotiations. He has a background in environmental engineering, and a PhD in environment management. In 2010, he joined IDDRI, the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations, a think tank specialising in policy change and international governance for sustainability, as the director of programmes and as the coordinator of the "Agriculture and Food" programme. He has coordinated the "Agrimonde" project (INRA –CIRAD), producing scenarios about how to feed the world in 2050 in a sustainable way, as well as in expert groups for the European Commission on the future challenges on which to focus the research and innovation investments of the EU concerning food and farming systems. Sébastien is a member of the editorial board of Natures Sciences Sociétés, the French-speaking interdisciplinary journal on environment studies, and is a lead faculty of the "Earth System Governance" project.

Joost Vervoort, Assistant Professor, University of Utrecht (remote presentation). Joost Vervoort is an Assistant Professor in the Environmental Governance Group at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development. He was previously a Senior Researcher at the Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford. For the last five years, Joost has led a team of researchers in a major multi-region scenarios project for the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security program of the CGIAR – where scenarios have been used effectively to guide policies throughout South and Southeast Asia, East and West Africa, the Andes, Central America and the Pacific. In addition, in Work Package leader roles in the FP7 TRANSMANGO and H2020 SUSFANS and programs, he has focused on scenarios and transition pathways in the context of European food and nutrition security.Daniel Walker, Chief Scientist, ACIAR joined ACIAR in November 2017 after 23 years at CSIRO where he was most recently Research Director for ‘Agriculture and Global Change’. Prior to this, Daniel was Chief of CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences. He has a BSc (Hons) in Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economy from the University of Edinburgh and a Phd from the University of Wales. Before moving to Australia, he conducted research in Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand funded by the then UK Overseas Development Agency. He joined CSIRO Tropical Crops and Pastures as a Research Scientist in Townsville in 1994 and his research and scientific publications since have focused on systems-oriented integration of environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainable production in agricultural, forestry and rangelands landscapes in Australia and in a number of developing countries.

Claire Weill, International Priority Projects Senior Advisor, INRA. Claire has worked with the French Interministerial Task Force for Climate Change. At IDDRI, she directed the ‘Risk and Precaution’ program. She was then a Senior Advisor for Research, Universities, New Technologies and Education with the cabinet of the Mayor of Paris. She also led the organization of the ‘Our Common Future under Climate Change’ conference ahead of COP 21, and she is currently the Senior Advisor of International Priority Projects at INRA.

Keith Wiebe, Senior Research Fellow, IFPRI leads a program of research on Global Futures and Strategic Foresight. Prior to joining IFPRI in 2013, he was Deputy Director of the Agricultural Development Economics Division of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, where he helped coordinate preparation of FAO’s annual flagship reports on the State of Food and Agriculture and the State of Food Insecurity in the World. He received his PhD in agricultural economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Liz Wilson, Program Officer – Economic Advancement Program of Open Society Foundation (OSF) focuses on the economic advancement of smallholder farmers. Liz joined OSF from Small Foundation, an innovative philanthropic funder headquartered in Ireland. Previously Liz was deputy director and co-founder of Agriculture for Impact, at Imperial College London, providing evidence to European governments to increase their support for agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. Liz has also worked for the UK's DFID in Beijing, the humanitarian health NGO Merlin, and served as a UK diplomat in Beijing and London. Liz is a trustee of Enterprise for Development and global adviser to Nigeria-based Visiola Foundation.

Mellissa Wood, General Manager, Global Programs, ACIAR and was Director, Australian International Food Security Centre (AIFSC) 2012-2016. She has a strong interest in improving the adoption of research outputs for food and nutrition security outcomes, with a focus on the roles of public policy and the private sector to facilitate this. Previously, Mellissa was Director, Program Development, Global Crop Diversity Trust, working with FAO and CGIAR on the conservation and access of plant genetic resources. In Australia, her background includes Program Leader in the Bureau of Rural Sciences, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry where she established the Australian Centre of Excellence for Risk Analysis and was Manager, Australia’s National Forest Inventory. Mellissa holds a BSc in Resource and Environmental Management and Masters in Public Policy in Development.

Jim Woodhill, Honorary Research Associate with the Oxford University Environmental Change Institute and an independent consultant. He is a specialist on inclusive agribusiness, rural development, food security and multi-stakeholder partnerships, with over 25 years of international development experience. Formerly Jim was the Principal Sector Specialist for Food Security and Rural Development with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Prior to this he was Director of the Centre for Development Innovation at Wageningen University and Research Centre in the Netherlands. He holds a PhD in political economics and a degree in agricultural science.

Professor Rami Zurayk, American University of Beirut (DPhil, Oxon) is a professor at the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the American University of Beirut. He is a member of the Steering Committee of the High-Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE) of the Committee of World Food Security, and a commissioner on the EAT-Lancet commission on health diets from sustainable food systems. Rami’s work addresses the political ecology of Arab food security and its linkages with the agrarian question. Among his latest works on this subject: Control Food, Control People: The Struggle for Food Security in Gaza (IPS 2013) and The Arab Uprisings Through an Agrarian Lens (Palgrave, 2016).

Monika Zurek, Senior Researcher, Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford has worked for 20 years on food systems, environment and development interactions and scenario analysis in research, international organizations, the philanthropic sector and consulting. Currently she focuses on conceptualizing food systems and sustainable food and nutrition security in the EU and globally, systems’ performance metrics and using forward looking methods to explore options for food system change and their trade-offs. Prior to joining ECI, Monika worked with Climate Focus, a consulting firm focusing on climate change mitigation and land use issues. Before that, she was part of the Agricultural Development Team of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation managing grants to improve the environmental sustainability of agricultural systems and risk management in agriculture. She also served as an economist at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and supported the Scenarios Working Group of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. Monika holds degrees from the University of Hohenheim (MSc equivalent/Diploma in agricultural biology) and Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, Germany (PhD in agricultural economics).
