Abraham Hermanus de Vries
For more than sixty years, Abraham H. De Vries (born 1937) has made a significant contribution to South
African literature. From early on his short stories challenged existing norms and introduced innovative
narrative strategies. He was recognised locally and internationally for this work.
Since his early years De Vries has been an outspoken anti-apartheid and anti-censorship critic and
registered his opposition in demonstrative ways. As an Afrikaans writer, De Vries has cherished the
broadening of the scope of his language in a multilingual environment.
De Vries is the leading short story writer in Afrikaans literature. He has published more than 20 short story
collections and anthologies, a novella, a poetry collection, several travelogues, as well as a variety of
academic and popular publications. He translated literary works from Dutch and produced several video
programmes on South African writers.
As a young writer he associated himself with the Sestiger-movement and his first collections of short stories
clearly bear evidence of the modernist experiments of the time. His oeuvre is characterised by its diversity
and literary sophistication. On the one hand, throughout his career he wrote short stories that in their
apparent simplicity recall, often anecdotally, the rural lives of communities and individuals in the Little Karoo
of his birth. His tales rely on humour, irony and satire, and adeptness of language use. On the other hand,
De Vries employs sophisticated literary techniques where the textual organisation, the play with signifiers
and metaphor, and literary intertextuality forewarn the reader of the postmodernist layeredness of his texts.
His work has been cited, analysed and critiqued in books as well as numerous peer-reviewed articles,
dissertations and theses. His stories are taught in literary classes locally and abroad, and selections of his
work have been translated in German and English.
His literary achievements as one of the primary Afrikaans authors, his commitment to social and political
liberty, and his conscientious commitment to Afrikaans as an encompassing symbol for all its speakers,
make Abraham H. de Vries a worthy recipient of the degree Doctor Litterarum (UP) honoris causa.

Athol Harold Fugard
Harold Athol Lanigan Fugard (born 1932) is considered to be one of the world’s foremost living dramatists.
Throughout his career he has made a contribution of inestimable importance to South African drama,
literature and cultural life, and indeed to that of the entire English-speaking world.
Fugard’s work is remarkable for its explicit focus on South Africa and on the lives of marginalised South
African individuals and communities. In plays like The Blood-Knot (1961), Boesman and Lena (1969), Sizwe
Bansi is Dead (1972) and The Island (1973), Fugard gives dramatic centrality and the full humanity it implies
to characters normally pushed to the periphery of society and discriminated against. In The Blood Knot, for
instance, Fugard presents half-brothers, one dark-skinned and the other light enough to live as a privileged
white man. The brothers’ ambivalent relationship serves as both a rich metaphor for the uneasy
interdependence of black and white South Africa, and as a visceral dramatisation of the system’s human
cost. Fugard’s writing shows the influence of global philosophical traditions such as existentialism, but his
penetrating explorations of wider issues of identity and meaning are always firmly rooted in the local.
As a result of Fugard’s work with black actors and communities, as well as the growing reputation of his
plays, the apartheid government placed severe restrictions on his work and movements, prohibiting
publication and performance of his plays. This never deterred him from tackling specific aspects of
apartheid legislation in his plays, including racial classification in The Blood-Knot, the Group Areas Act in
Boesman and Lena, the Pass Laws in Sizwe Bansi is Dead, the Immorality Act in Statements After an Arrest Under
the Immorality Act and the imprisonment of political activists in The Island.
In Master Harold and the Boys (1982), the issue of racism is also central, but the play shows the capacity of
individuals to rise above the reductive identities shaped for them by society. It is this unconquerable belief
in the human spirit that ultimately makes the film versions of his work, The Road to Mecca (1991) and the
Oscar-winning Tsotsi (2005), so deeply moving.

Aziz Goolam Hoosein Pahad
Aziz Pahad (born 1940) is one of South Africa’s most well-known public intellectuals and is internationally
known and recognised for his contributions to local and international peace, security, justice and
international solidarity. Pahad’s career and contributions span more than six decades, starting as a young
political activist in the anti-apartheid struggle, forced into exile in the early 1960s, and culminating in his
appointment, in 1994, as deputy minister of foreign affairs in the first democratically elected South African
government.
During the 1980s Pahad played a key role in preparing the ground for talks with the then South African
government, and later participated in the formal negotiations that ended apartheid and lead to the birth of
a democratic South Africa. As deputy minister of international relations, he was involved in developing the
foreign policy of the new South Africa and he co-shepherded the country’s return to and entry into a range
of multilateral organisations. Together with President Thabo Mbeki and other colleagues, he developed
ideas around the African Renaissance and South Africa took a leading role on the continent in the transition
from the OAU to the African Union and the establishment of NEPAD and the African Peer Review
Mechanism.
His intellectual contribution is reflected in his book, Insurgent Diplomat: Civil Talk or Civil War?, which goes
beyond autobiography to provide an in-depth historical account of an era that saw great change in South
Africa and the world. Pahad sketches with conceptual and empirical depth the international context and the
factors determining decisions to pursue a particular path of negotiation, providing a sensitive, engaging and
insightful analysis on the making of post-apartheid South Africa from the perspective of someone who had
been deeply involved in the process as one of those who had helped shape the country’s history.
Throughout his life, Pahad’s ideas and actions have been dedicated and aligned to the core values and
principles of building a better South Africa, a better Africa and a better world, thereby contributing to the
ideals and practice of promoting global South and international cooperation towards strengthening the
ideals of global, responsible citizenship.

In his thesis, The evolution of the Sesotho sa Leboa Young Adult Novella: A critical and comparative study
(1940-1969), the promovendus explored the flowering of the Sesotho sa Leboa (Northern Sotho) young adult
(YA) novella from the canon of novellas (novels) in that language. The YA novellas written between 1940-1960
were characterised by didacticism. Pioneer writers embraced the dominant trajectory of morality and
regarded Western culture as profoundly superior in their literary output. By and large, religious material
formed the bedrock of earlier books written in Sesotho sa Leboa. Though the writers wrote in the African
idiom, their approach seemed to be more eurocentric. In contrast,, current research has proven that the
subject matter of the YA novella (novel) is being transformed as in the case in Sesotho sa Leboa. Today, authors
grapple with topics and themes that deal with reality as it is experienced daily. It is hoped that this study will
generate new knowledge and benefit practitioners in the advancement and understanding of the specified
sub-genre. Furthermore, the research will resolve current, and past controversies in demarcating young adult
literature in the domain of Sesotho sa Leboa.

In this thesis, The role of soft power in transforming the India-Pakistan conflict: A Pakistani perspective of
prospects and challenges, the promovendus explored the opportunities and challenges of soft power for
transforming the India-Pakistan conflict. Unexplored by previous studies, the researcher used a novel
approach to transforming such an intractable conflict that prioritised people and relationships, and in so doing,
addressed the root causes of the conflict. Using a qualitative methodology rooted in constructivist and
interpretivist epistemology, the study found that durable peace between both countries is possible if there is
a change of heart between people on both sides. Therefore, within a conceptual and analytical framework that
converged soft power, John Lederach’s moral imagination and conflict transformation, the study concluded
that the soft power resources of India and Pakistan could be appropriated to unleash the moral imagination
of their citizens to transcend the conflict and co-exist in healthy competition. This has implications for positive
peace in South Asia.

In her novel, In the shadows of the springs I saw, and thesis, 'In the Shadow of the Springs I Saw' and 'Shadow
and Shade, the promovenda evaluated the common complaint of many people that while democracy is laudable,
a shocking phenomenon is that in many cities the 'white' or 'European' heritage, and by this they mean the
buildings, are being destroyed. In doing so, she considered the Art Deco buildings and the spaces of Springs, a
town on the East Rand. The researcher developed a narrative that included an understanding of history and how
these buildings came about and contained the stories of those who live there and made it their space. In the
creative work, she explored the stories of those who live in the buildings of Springs now. In doing so, she created
their names and their stories, imagined their lives and developed a narrative on how they live in a space that is
not theirs historically but which they have claimed and reconfigured. In the thesis, she explored the architectural
genre of Art Deco both theoretically and in relation to some buildings, considering social space theories and how
buildings are not static but reflect a changing social order. She analysed some photographs of the buildings as
they are now. In doing so, she has created a new narrative, namely one of revival, vigour and celebration.

In his thesis, A content analysis of the 'land language' articulated by the political elites concerning South
Africa's land question after 2013, the promovendus conducted original research on the ideational context of
the land question as opposed to the material dimension, which is more extensively researched. He
qualitatively analysed the sometimes conflictual, sometimes diversifying and sometimes unifying 'land
language' articulated by Julius Sello Malema of the Economic Freedom Fighters and Petrus Johannes
Groenewald of the Freedom Front Plus as political elites. The promovendus explored the extent to which
'land language' allowed for the emergence of an imagined pluralistic security community with dependable
expectations of peaceful change. The study argues that an imagined pluralistic security community founded
on re-imagining the land question to advance societal interests, human dignity, and compassion has the
potential to reduce the hostility, fear and confrontation inherent in South Africa's post-2013 land question.

In his thesis, Social and economic change and changing food security : A qualitative analysis of household
level dynamics in Shamva District, Zimbabwe, the promovendus explored the food security and agriculture
production crisis experienced in Zimbabwe in the 2000s. By employing an ethnographic approach of
household life histories and experiences, he explained the context of the food security crisis from a
household perspective and provided a different perspective from the popular narrative centred on natural
phenomena and state agricultural policies that are currently dominant in Zimbabwe. He emphasised the
importance of understanding household-level dynamics, and in particular, the socio-economic changes that
took place at the household level in the period before 2000, including their impact on production processes.
In this respect, the thesis conveys significant lessons for policymakers in Zimbabwe and beyond, where
small farm agriculture continues to be promoted as a livelihood pathway and a path for economic
development and poverty reduction.

In his thesis, Mobile money discounting and currency abandonment: Livelihoods and monetary practices in
rural Binga, Zimbabwe, the promovendus presented detailed ethnographic data of how households and
persons in the area of study use and reject different forms of money as part of their livelihood. The rejection
of mobile money was shown to be a rational response to impoverishment and the high costs associated
with participation in mobile money markets. The continued importance of sharing and distribution practices,
often mediated through kinship relations, was extensively documented and shown to remain important to
rural livelihoods. The research contributes to scholarly debates regarding the developmental potential and
impact of the digitalisation of money, arguing that financial exclusion is often a function of economic
exclusion. At the same time, it proposes a locally informed sociotechnical framework of monetary
innovations that pays attention to the technical and functional properties of money.

In her thesis, Guilt and its repercussions: Bernard Malamud's 'The Magic Barrel', the promovenda analysed
depictions of guilt and suffering in some of Bernard Malamud's short stories. She explored the philosophical
question of guilt through the lens of Martin Buber's teachings on existential guilt. The stories were examined
against the backdrop of Buber's 'Guilt and Guilt Feelings' as well as his seminal texts I-and-Thou and Between
Man and Man. The secondary focus was on the power of storytelling to breathe life into complex moral and
philosophical ideas. The promovenda’s short story collection, The Elephant and Other Stories, explores
themes of isolation, guilt and the importance of relationships. The stories often feature characters who are
faced with the experience of being tormented by their guilt which often appears in the form of a persistent
'other' or visitor.

In her thesis, Distributive justice: Water allocation reform in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, the
promovenda investigated the intentionality of the national water allocation reform to benefit historically
disadvantaged individuals. She analysed the concepts of equity, justice and gender in water allocation for
productive use in democratic South Africa using Rawls’ theory of justice and Derrida’s deconstruction theory.
The thesis uncovered illusions of inclusion of the historically disadvantaged. It found that water allocation
reform objectives were far from achievable given that land ownership that determines the potential to
reallocate water has remained skewed along racial lines. Land and water legislation continue to protect
minority rights. The promovenda found that deficit thinking, that is, notions of inherent incompetence in
black people stunted potential progress in the reform process, a challenge not previously identified in water
allocation literature.

In his thesis, Waterford "you are kaMhlaba": Apartheid and the establishment and growth of a multiracial
school in exile, 1963-2000, the promovendus focused on an audacious experiment in multiracial schooling
in segregationist, mid-twentieth century southern Africa. In the aftermath of the introduction of the
profoundly flawed Bantu Education in South Africa in the 1950s, an activist group of expatriate teachers,
with initial assistance from the clergy, decided to fight the system by establishing Waterford School in exile
in Swaziland in 1963. Tracing the school's history over four decades, Gambe showed how Waterford
established itself as a bastion of multiracial schooling, human rights education and anti-apartheid activism
while also cementing its place in history as the alma mater of the Mandela, Sisulu and Khama scions. At the
end of apartheid, the school strategically re-invented itself as a significant player in the World College
movement. The thesis contributes to the broader analysis of struggles against apartheid and the
development of multiracial schooling in the region.

In her thesis, From Washington consensus to relational economy: Relational and human economy
approaches to addressing poverty and inequality in South Africa, the promovenda examined development
from a relational perspective. Based on the assumption that the dominance of the neoliberal tradition has
led to an impasse in development, the thesis argues that alternative philosophies and measures are needed
to identify other questions, problems and interventions than those currently imagined. A neoliberal
approach has the danger of implying that better resource and wealth distribution will lead to development.
Instead, this thesis argues that it is the relational dynamic between people at different levels of society and
the ‘health’ of these relationships that will determine the efficacy of development interventions. By
measuring the relationships in one organisation in the care industry in South Africa, the study provides a
thick description of the kind of alternative a relational approach offers in development interventions.

In his thesis, Post-war labour market reconstruction: The case of The Democratic Republic of the Congo,
the promovendus provided an analysis of the reconstruction process of the labour market in post-war Congo
and the roles played by key actors. Drawing on Peck's theory of labour market social regulation, he used a
constructivist methodological approach and the extended case method to collect detailed data through
field interviews. He proved the following arguments: firstly, the Congolese labour market's past is clearly
visible in its post-war recovery process. Secondly, the post-war Congolese government delayed the
implementation of reform policies. The reforms introduced after 2011 were blunted by poor
implementation processes. Thirdly, the inherent weakness of Congo's labour market institutions weakened
the impact of these reconstruction attempts. The researcher concludes that the post-war Congolese labour
market has experienced a drawn-out reconstruction due to delayed and poorly implemented labour market
policies, with the private sector doing little to contribute substantively.

In his thesis, The tension between non-intervention and non-indifference in the SADC mediation in
Zimbabwe, 2007- 2013: An Analysis, the promovendus argued that when the Southern African Development
Community (SADC) decided in 2007 to initiate mediation between the parties to address the political crisis
in Zimbabwe to help the country get back on its feet again, it entered a contested terrain. The study
contends that this intervention seemed to mark an end to the principle of non-intervention in regional
politics and a shift towards the principle of non-indifference justifying interventions on humanitarian
grounds. The study found that SADC and its South African mediators had to navigate the delicate balance
between the norms of non-interference and non-indifference. The research reveals the many factors and
dynamics that define this balance conceptually and practically and its implications for our understanding of
state and sovereignty.

In her thesis, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Assata Skhakurs self-writing: torture, authorisation and
liberation, self-writing was conceptualised through the lived experiences of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and
Assata Shakur. The study explored this based on three themes: torture, authorisation and liberation. Using
narrative analysis, the thesis found that the narratives of Shakur and Madikizela-Mandela have political
significance. These narratives illustrate how self-writing is re-imagined into a concept that propagates a
political imaginary about the individual self and a collective political imaginary illuminated through political
resistance. Self-writing was shown to transcend from a mode of writing to a way of life. Using the self-writing
mode of two radical black female activists, the thesis contributes to knowledge about how self-writing
becomes a continuous process that awakens an individual’s consciousness and consequently that of others
in pursuit of liberation.

In his thesis, Historicising the politics of Vhuhosivhuhulu: The Venda polity and state formation in South
Africa, c. 1800s – 2020, promovendus traced the conflicts around the Venda vhuhosivhuhulu (“kingship”) over
the past three centuries, and specifically the way history was employed in the political arena as from the
second half of the twentieth century. The researcher illustrated how the post-apartheid fate of traditional
leadership was shaped through the investigations and findings of three successive commissions. A chapter
dedicated to the perspectives of local vhothovhele (rulers) and magota (“headmen”) from different Venda
royal families, revealed their outspoken frankness about the significance of traditional leadership in present-
day South Africa. It also showed the contending parties’ knowledge of, selection from, interpretation and
employment of popular as well as scholarly historical narratives. The study was concluded at a time when
two contenders in the Mphephu Ramabulana family (one of them, a woman) are turning to the South African
legal system to challenge each other’s claims to the Venda vhuhosivhuhulu.

In her thesis, The emotional well-being of the polygynous women in Lola Shoneyin's novel 'The Secret Lives
of Baba Segi's Wives', the promovenda analysed how women seek culturally acceptable identities by
embracing polygamy and gain emotional well-being in societies where mental healthcare is neglected. The
thesis demonstrated that polygynous wives could cope with daily stressors and achieve assertive identities
by using Antonovsky's Generalised Resistance Resources, notably ego strength, selective co-wife bonding,
education and skills, joy in children, economic freedom and spiritual intervention. The promovenda's novel,
The Things We Don't Talk About, comprises the submission's creative component. Its nuanced title evokes
those things African women do not talk about in the absence of mental health professionals and those they
keep to themselves out of embarrassment. The plot follows two young women in their attempts to cope
with pressures from their partners, families and societies. In rebellion and to suit her whims, one marries a
polygamist but manages to emerge as the more stable of the two.

In his thesis, African authors perception of women's achievements: Exploring cultural expectations in
selected Zulu literary texts, the promovendus employed a psycho-sociological theoretical framework to
analyse six Zulu novels for the attitudes of indigenous African authors towards female success. All six novels
were found to reflect indigenous African societies' traditional cultural view, namely to expect a woman to
bring dowry wealth to her family and produce progeny to her husband and his clan. Any other achievement
by a woman who disregards these traditional expectations is considered abominable. Resisting societal
pressure by continuing to achieve success may result in social ostracism, even death. Many women,
therefore, avoid success, conceal their talents, and over-comply with the status quo. Society uses moral
teachings to indoctrinate women into accepting the oppressive status quo. Even authors comply: few isiZulu
literary texts portray women as willing to subvert traditional cultural norms to pursue success.

In her thesis, A study of financial inclusion and women’s empowerment in South Africa: The case of female
entrepreneurs in Gauteng, the promovenda used a feminist political economy perspective to analyse existing
measures on financial inclusion to determine whether these contribute to the socio-economic
empowerment of female entrepreneurs in South Africa, using Gauteng as a case in point. The thesis
identified socio-economic factors that enabled or impeded female entrepreneur’s access to and use of
financial products to improve their socio-economic conditions. The study contributes to the application of
feminist political economy as an analytical framework and to knowledge of conditions under which financial
inclusion and economic empowerment for women is enabled or constrained by government measures and
private sector financial products. Detailed policy recommendations are provided for policy actors to deepen
women’s financial inclusion in South Africa and Africa.

In his thesis, The strategic and political influence in the development of military intelligence in the South
African Defence Force between 1961 and 1990, the promovendus concluded that the South African state
applied military intelligence for specific intelligence functions in the execution of national policy. Of the four
main functions of intelligence, namely collection, analysis, counter-intelligence and covert action, the latter
was incrementally used by the state for the execution of its national security policy, national interest and
foreign policy. These covert action projects were allocated to the South African Defence Force based on its
human resources and military capability and designated to military intelligence as the responsible authority,
especially after the Angolan civil war in 1975. The researcher concludes that military intelligence executed
these functions within the National Security Management System and the State Security Council, and not
arbitrarily.

In his thesis, An analysis of South Africa's compliance with its reporting obligations under selected core
human rights treaties, the promovendus critically analysed South Africa’s performance in regard to
compliance and reporting on three United Nations (UN) human rights treaties, namely the International
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), the International Covenant on
Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
(ICCPR). It found that South Africa was not fully compliant with its reporting obligations, identified factors
that explained this, including weak central coordination of the reporting function and capacity constraints.
On this basis, the thesis offered recommendations for strengthening South Africa’s compliance. The study
makes a significant contribution to discussions on state behaviour and international obligations.

And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
In South Africa our land.
