Letter From The Editor
Yay, Spring!
That means our weekly Wednesday night Development Runs begin. I fi nd great joy in helping others, especially our community. I was born not far from the “Parkway” and spent many years calling it my stomping grounds. Long before its Recreation Center, there stood an outdoor ice skating rink. Every weekend my siblings and I walked to the rink, skates over the shoulder and hot cocoa money in hand. That was my little slice of Utica goodness at 12. My hope is that you’ll look back and remember these Wednesdays with the fondness I had for the skating rink.
Support your community. It’s where you live, breathe – run. Encourage young people in the area to join the club, especially those who don’t feel like they fi t into a sport that requires a lot of coordination and a ball. The beauty of running is that it’s cheap, easy, and accessible. The young people in this area are the future of our club and will determine the success of its benefi ts. They not only learn about healthy habits but also about the importance of volunteering and being an integral part of a communities that thrives.
Our club has grown tremendously over the past few years, thanks to many of our tireless volunteers and our message is clear: To promote the sport of running and encourage all people of all abilities to participate. But to me, it means more than that. It means a healthier, happier hometown that facilitates growth and prosperity. It means something we can all be proud of.
In the meantime, move it, people!-Val Cognetto
Top 10 Development Run Tips:1. Plan on coming early the fi rst few weeks if you haven’t registered for a number yet.
2. Bring the family! Bring your friends! Even Grandma can bring her chair to watch.
3. Thank the volunteers! It takes many kind people to have these runs.
4. Introduce yourself to our friendly Board members and kindly ask how you can help.
5. New runners should pace themselves according to their personal fi tness level.
Walk, rest and drink when you feel the need to.
6. Notice the beautiful surroundings as you run. Smell the air. Appreciate your legs.
7. Encourage new runners to have fun and do their best.
8. Make dinner ahead in a crock pot for a yummy meal when you get home.
9. Snatch the bullhorn and sing “Happy Birthday.”
10. Have fun, but at the same time, remember to be courteous to other runners.
See you there!

APRIL 2013 4The Offi cial Newsletter of the Utica Roadrunners
May – the month when the Mohawk Valley really gets its green going. Unfortunately, April was too blue. The awful events surrounding the Boston Marathon put a major damper on a day that used to be a bunch of fun. For many years the Utica Roadrunners would go en masse to volunteer and/or run. We have jackets for 5 diff erent years of volunteering and Dennis ran for the 100th anniversary in 1996 and then again in 2007. We have watched friends running from the sidewalk areas that blew up. This year, there was a sizeable group of Utica Roadrunners who ran the marathon. They and their families/friends all are safe. Thank goodness. On behalf of the Utica Roadrunners Board of Directors and the Club, our sincerest sympathies and prayers go out to all of the families aff ected by these tragic events in the Boston area.
It does not seem to be fair that everyone has to be on their guard from now on as we participate in events where crowds of people gather. It does not seem fair that groups hosting races might have to have the added expense of beefed up security. It does not seem fair that the violence in the world has invaded our favorite sport. Darn. Well, this is how my article was supposed to begin… Signs of spring are all around us. Here is what I observed as I walked and ran one sunny Sunday.
• Lots of sand on the side of the roads. I like the run on the damp sand. It is better for my back. The dry stuff is a pain as clouds of dust rise with the wind.
• Someone lost a yellow plastic Easter egg. There are 2 chocolate kisses inside. I hope it wasn’t part of an egg hunt because it was right on the side of a busy road under a big brown leaf.
• A small hawk swoops down, catches a little critter, fl ies up, and drops it by another hawk. Maybe this is a mating ritual.
• Hundreds of blackbirds were in the trees at the intersection of Glass Factory Road and Edic Road. They have never been there in such great numbers. I tried to clap to get their attention so they might fl y and make those great wavy designs in the sky, but they are too noisy to care about me.
• Budweiser, Old Milwaukee and Gatorade seem to be the hydrations of choice. There are lots of nickels are out there.
• The red osier dogwood, pussy willows and creeping myrtle are in abundance.
• Someone threw a Tasmanian Devil stuff ed toy to the side of the road. It looks new, but is soaking wet when picked up. I left it.
• Maybe all of the garbage out there will be covered when the grass and weeds grow. It doesn’t look too pretty right now. The wind and snow did a number on trees this winter. Good thing the towns keep up with the ones that are on or near the roads.
• I suppose the rest of them will acquire a mossy coat as time goes by.
• Many of those blue tarps on roofs and those portable hoop garages did not fare very well this past winter. How are those people keeping dry? It seems that contractors could make some bucks out there.
• Last but not least, the wind is warm and comfortable, and there is still a patch or two of snow in shady spots. Do those of you who wear headsets notice any of these spring signs? You seem to be in a focused daze as you go by me. That is unfortunate.
President’s Message
MAY 2013 5The Offi cial Newsletter of the Utica Roadrunners
A hundred Club members had a great time at the Awards Banquet. Danielle’s at Valley View was a perfect location. We had a perfect space – well almost perfect. The doors to the bar area were closed so the Syracuse fans could not see the TV. Anyway, Mike Brych provided DJ services, Danielle’s had a delish Italian buff et, Ted Lenio was the MC, Patrice bought pastries from Caruso’s Café, Cindy Molesky did the pictures, Ellen Furnari passed out awards, and there was open bar for 2 hours! What more could you want? Ted kept things going so no one would miss the game and we pulled off the surprise Hall of Fame award for Danny Cohen. You can read the excellent nomination letter that Tina Lindsey wrote about Dan later in this issue of SpliTimes. Personally, I think this was the best banquet that we have had in a long time. Thanks to Ted, Mike, Patrice, Cindy, Paula (She paid the bills.), Dennis (He got the Power Point to work.), and yours truly. Next year, more of you should attend. I especially liked placing faces with names from the membership list.
It is Paul Ohlbaum Scholarship time. Letters have been sent to 54 coaches and guidance counselors at 27 area schools. I hope at least half of them respond. If you know of a high school senior who did some running in cross country or track, who has a decent academic record and who has kept busy with community/social eff orts, send their name and email address to me. I will send them an application. We have four $500 scholarships. The money comes from Club reserves, donations from the Ohlbaum family and memorials for club members who have passed on to that race course in the sky. Seniors can nominate themselves also. The deadline is May 20th – no exceptions.
To get the racing season off on the right foot, there are a BUNCH of races in May – especially on May 11th! Check out the Club website calendar. There are 7 events that I was asked to list for the 11th alone. Then on the 25th,
nothing is happening locally. This is why I have the Race Calendar meeting at the beginning of the year. Events could be spread out more. May used to be a relatively quiet race month - not any more. You can make lots of donations and get lots of training done in May!
I think I should promote the National Distance Running Hall of Fame Half Marathon and 5K on May 19th. The Club has always had a close association with the HOF, so if you can make one of the races, please do so. The HOF will be moving to the Varick Street area in August, so I am sure they could use the bucks.
If the Mighty Run on the 4th is anything like the Daniel Barden Highland Mudfest which was held on April 13th, it should be a blast. Dennis and I took the Club clock for the fi nish line, and we stayed until it was no longer needed. The fi rst woman to cross the line at 39:00 was Club member Suzanna Price. Member Maryann Vanderpool came through a little while later. Both of them were pretty muddy. There were many familiar faces, but even more unfamiliar ones. Of course, with all the mud, who knows? Maybe I did know more people. I heard the party afterwards with the Highland Games, libation, and music was fun. We left too soon. I will be coming home from Vieques Island on May 4th, so I will not be able to compare the two events.
Well, whatever you do in May, try your best to make the Parkway Development Runs on Wednesdays. Get yourself ready for the Boilermaker by doing those Switchbacks weekly. Remember, the gun goes off at 6:30, so don’t be late. Registration begins at 5:30 and the fi rst couple of weeks are always kind of crazy since everyone has to sign waivers. If you are a Club member, you can participate for free. I think you still have to sign a waiver and you defi nitely need a number.
Another way to get yourselves ready for the Boilermaker would be to get down to the Parkway Rec Center starting on Saturday, May 18th. This will be an informal running group with no support (water) along the way. The people who show up will decide what distance they want to run. There may be groups that run 3 miles, or 5, or more. You ought to be able to fi nd someone to run with. Have fun – it’s training. Be on the backside of the Rec Center at 7:15 to run at 7:30 AM.
At the last two Board meetings, we have discussed updating our website. No decisions or changes have been made yet, and there is more to the process than I could ever think of. What do I know about Content Management Systems? Do you have any ideas for what you would like to see on the website? Send me an email [email protected] if you have ideas, and I will forward them to the people with more I.T. knowledge than I possess.

Please be patient with us when it comes to new Club merchandise. We are checking out effi cient ways to distribute the clothing. There are more options than I was aware of, and we want you to get the best bang for your bucks. The new logo looks good on the new member shirts, and I think it will look good on any other apparel we order. We will try to have sample clothes at the Development Runs ASAP.
Just a little history: The Club used to always have parties after the Boilermaker. Bob Carlson, our fi rst president, would reserve the Kirk or the Legion and we would party, party, party. There would always be a band and lots of great picnic type food. Of course, we would have more beer – just in case we did not get enough at the Brewery.
(...continued from page 5.)
Man, we would dance for hours! In 1988, we happened to be doing high kicks to New York, New York, and I broke my ankle. I did not know it was broken. I thought it was just twisted. I iced the swollen area and them I danced some more. When that party ended, we went to another event and then we ended up at my house for blender drinks. My ankle was pretty ugly. In the morning, I went to the emergency room. No more running for me. That summer I did have a great tan because I listened to the doctor. He said to stay off my foot and I did so in a beach chair. Ah, the good old days!
I hope your training is pleasant with the \nicer weather. Be wise and do not abuse yourbody.

A Veteran “On the Run” Beginning on Memorial Day 2013, I will keep track of all the miles that I run, and will do so for one full year plus a day, ending on Memorial Day 2014. I am seeking sponsors who will pledge a minimum of 1 cent per mile for each mile that I run over the course of the entire year. Right after Memorial Day 2014, I will send all moneys collected to the Wounded War-rior Project headquarters in Washington D.C. I plan to run a minimum of 1000 miles and at that distance each 1, 2 or 3 cent per mile pledge will raise $10.00, $20.00 or $30.00 for the W.W.P. Our veterans stood up for us when we needed them, and many of them paid a terrible price for doing so. The least we can do is stand up for some of them when they could use a helping hand. You can pledge my running by providing your name, contact information and pledge amount (# pennies per mile) or a fl at dollar amount at the fol-lowing: Email: [email protected].
On behalf of all our veterans, thank you!
Sincerely,Bob VanDenberghMember, Utica Roadrunners

Local Running Role Model Dan Cohen Continues To InspireBy Tina Lindsey
Dan Cohen (second from left) has inspired many Utica Roadrunners, including his son, Rich (fourth from left), who is one of the best runners in the area.
Veteran Utica Roadrunner, Dan Cohen, started running in 1977 at the age of 42 years old. He, along with his other fellow-runners – Howard Rubin, Tom Hovey, Dave Pearce, Roger Herbowy, Pat Trapp, Dave Jones and John Rastani, were renegades of the running community – their normal schedule was to run 10 miles per day (no matter what ) and 20 miles on Sunday (if they were training for a marathon). Dan and the comrades of his running group trained a lot – they were part of the fi rst big running craze of the 70’s. And part of the fi rst Boilermakers of the time.
Dan was known to train hard. And he raced even harder – he always raced so hard that he left it all out on the course – because of this, his son, accomplished Utica Roadrunner Rich Cohen has said (and I have witnessed) he would always vomit at the end of every race. One did not have to wonder whether or not he did his best – no second guesses here.
Personally Dan has been a great supporter to many runners in the community. I met Dan in 2007 when I
fi rst started running with his Sunday morning running group (now at Planet Fitness but originally at Brookside Athletic Club). I was honored to be on the same road with Dan. He was so good to me – I loved running and he knew this – I loved to hear his past race stories of Boston for which he once ran a 3:03 and about New York where he ran a 2:51. He helped me understand the personal race of each runner and how running is more than just a sport -- it is a psyche of oneself – in life you never give up – you may have wins and losses (and injuries) but you pick yourself up determined to “beat this thing” and win and run again.
Dan’s son, Rich, remembers watching and supporting his father at marathons as a child. Now, his father supports him at his races – always giving him great advice – especially advice runners need to hear about
what to do not to get injured. This advice I listened to personally, as Dan would remind me often with these
(...continued on next page)

(...continued from page 14.)
words, “You always get hurt, when you are running your best…” These words I fell by and try to keep remembering to keep me on track.
Dan was and continues to be a very accomplished runner – he is a long-time past member of the Syracuse Chargers, winning several national companionships, and won their Master Runner of the year in the early 1980s. At age 48 he had a 16:43 Falling Leaves 5K and had an estimated Boilermaker time at age 47 of 55 minutes with change. At age 48 he did the Empire State Games 5K at 17:03. And even in his older years he ran faster than most runners half his age, running a 23:03 at the Falling Leaves 5K at 71 years of age.
Dan, now 77 years old, runs 7-8 miles (sometimes more) a few times per week and is still pretty fast. He still runs regularly with the Sunday morning Planet Fitness Running Group for which his son, Rich is also a group member. Even if Dan is not able to run outside on a given Sunday (but runs on the treadmill instead), he always rallies around the Planet Fitness runners on Sunday mornings at 7:30 a.m. Our running group is a collection of runners of many speed paces – some
are fast like his son Rich and some are slower, like most of the human running mortals. But Dan always welcomes us all. He asks us how we are doing, gives us encouragement and wishes us well on our run for the day.
Without Dan, I personally could not have had the hope to become a better runner. He helped me understand what running really is all about – it is a personal race. You feel the competition of the race, but basically you are just trying to get better. You always believe that it is possible.
I wholeheartedly nominate Dan Cohen for the Utica Roadrunners Hall of Fame Award. Not only was Dan a great runner, but he continues to run well at age 77 years old. He was a pioneer at the beginning of the current running boom. Because of the advice and knowledge he has shared, he has been a great role model to many runners. Dan deserves to be honored with this award. ~ Tina Lindsey
(Editor’s Note: We encourage our members to nominate other deserving
members for Club awards listed in this issue, as Tina has done!)
MAY 2013 16The Offi cial Newsletter of the Utica Roadrunners
The 2013 Grand Prix season got underway on Saturday, April 6th as 49 Utica Roadrunners (32 males and 17 females) ran the Fort to Fort 10K in Rome, NY. Richard Cohen avenged his fourth place fi nish in 2012 by winning this year’s race fourteen seconds faster than last year, in 34:23! Cory Battles, next fastest Utica Roadrunner came in 7th overall, with John Kuelling, Joseph Mashaw, and Thomas Joslin close behind, all in the highly competitive M30-34 Grand Prix age-group. F2F10K race age-group gold medalists were: Ashley Fess (F20-24), Ellen Furnari (F25-29), Mike Massoud (M50-54), D. Joanne Willcox-Ayoub (F50-54), Bruce Palmer (M55-59), Joanne Reese (F60-64), and Bob Vandenbergh (M65-69).
Though the Fort to Fort 5K is not part of the Grand Prix series, several Utica Roadrunners distinguished themselves in that race with overall and age-group honors. Second place female overall was Justyna Wilkinson, recent recipient of the UR Junior Roadrunner of the Year Award. Other age-group fi rst-place medalists, besides Justyna, were: Jason Pare (M40-44), Scott Suba (M45-49), Dennis Johnson (M50-54), and Kermit Cadrette (M75-79).
Thanks to Jim Fiore’s suggestion, we are going to employ a method of comparing results this year that levels the performance playing fi eld, regardless of age or gender, a sort of “handicapping,” if you will. “Age Grading” computes one’s gender, age, distance, and time against world-record times, yielding an age-graded score (percentage), as well as adjusted “prime times.” It’s all explained at http://www.usatfmasters.org/fa_agegrading.htm and you can fi gure your own scores at http://www.howardgrubb.co.uk/athletics/wmalookup06.html We’ll also begin using these Age Grade percentages to determine end-of-year awards for male and female Junior, Open, Grandmaster and Most Improved Roadrunners of the Year. (By the way, your actual age on race day will be used to calculate age-graded performance.)
Among the most impressive age-graded scores among our members at the Fort to Fort 10K, were Richard Cohen with 83.88%, Joanne Reese with 80.9%, and Mike Massoud with 80.79%, all in the National Class category! Also meritorious were D. Joanne Willcox-Ayoub with 73.86%, Stan Dickson with 73.69%, Bruce Palmer with 72.97%, and Tom Bick with 70.49%, all in the Regional Class.
And some fi nal Grand Prix notes: Do remember that we are using your age as of December 31, 2013, to determine which fi ve-year age-group you are placed for the entire season. Also, fi rst- and second-place age-group results this year earn 12- and 10-points, respectively, with third through tenth-place points unchanged. As of the fi rst race, there are 49 members in the running for Grand Prix-mier medallions, which will be presented to those participating in all twelve Grand Prix races. (It’s not unlike the Syrathon series medals or the Route 20 series merchandise incentives, except we require participation in all our events, thus making it a presumably more prized memento of achievement!) After our fi rst race, all but the youngest and oldest female and male age groups are already occupied, some with robust participation, such as the M60-64 age-group with eight guys earning points. (Both standings and blog are posted on the right side-bar of our website at: http://www.uticaroadrunners.org) In the meantime, hope everyone stays strong, trains safe, and races swift! ~ Ted Lenio, 4/8/13

Sunny, blue skies, albeit brisk temps and a somewhat stiff homeward headwind, greeted 170 runners at Sunday’s Save Our Switchbacks (SOS) 7.5K race from the Parkway Chalet through Valley View Golf Course, Roscoe Conkling Park, and the South Woods Trail. New race director and board member Jerry Tylutki organized a great experience for all participants, with swelled sponsors’ support, and opportunities to contribute, less than a week after the Boston Marathon bombings, to “The One Fund Boston.” In keeping with the Club’s new custom of providing novel awards, Jerry distributed white pine saplings for planting, courtesy of The Arbor Foundation, to all age-group winners, apt awards given the race’s proximity to Arbor and Earth Days. (Profi ts from the event continue to benefi t the SOS Project of maintaining and upgrading the switchback trails / Utica Roadrunners’ development runs route, which were in terrifi c condition considering our winter snows and spring rains.)
Participation at the Club’s “half-Boilermaker” and second race in the 2013 Grand Prix series was up from last year’s remarkable growth, with eighteen more Utica Roadrunners among the 68 fi nishing (40 males and 28 females). Notable performances on the steeply-hilled course included Stephen Paddock fi nishing second overall in 28:42 (and with the Club’s top age-graded performance at 71.4%), and Cory Battles, third place overall in 29:03. Fifth through seventh place overall were Utica Roadrunners Thomas Joslin, Paul Humphrey, and John Draper. Leading Club women were Meghan Furner, fi rst place female and thirteenth overall in 33:01, and Justyna Wilkinson, second place female and eighteenth overall in 33:53. Also remarkable is that Utica Roadrunners occupied twelve of the top twenty places
overall. (That fi gure would have been even greater had some members renewed their memberships by March 31st in time to be eligible for Grand Prix points. You can fi nd all the race results, both overall and age groups, at Jerry’s timing company http://tnttiming.com/results/ Grand Prix standings and race reports are available both in the Club’s monthly newsletter, SpliTimes, and website www.uticaroadrunners.org
Three more Grand Prix age groups became occupied after the SOS, with the men’s 60-64 leading the way in participation with ten gents. With double golds thus far and eying year-end “Super Sevens” medals (fi rst-place in best seven races) are Mary Ann Wilkinson, Ashley Fess, Bob VanDenbergh, Bruce Palmer, and Cory Battles, with more certainly to come as the series plays out. Moreover, twenty-nine members are still in contention for Grand Prix-mier awards (i.e., participation in all twelve GP races). Also, if you are among the two dozen Utica Roadrunners who haven’t claimed your awards handed out at our annual banquet, they will be available at our weekly development runs’ registration beginning Wednesday, May 8th.
Next races in the 2013 GP are the Rome Art and Community Center’s 5K Run and walks on Saturday, May 11; the National Distance Running Hall of Fame Half-Marathon on Sunday, May 19; the Kirkland Art Center 5K on Saturday, June 1; and our Club’s second sponsored race of the year, the Summer Sizzle 5 Mile at SUNYIT on Sunday, June 9. Hope to see you in Rome at the RACC on the 11th. Until then, may everyone stay strong, train safe, and race swift! ~ Ted Lenio, 4/22/13 (N.B. Due to late additions to Grand Prix eligibilities and members’ age-group adjustments, standings were recently recalculated and
updated.)

The More the Merrier! We’re asking that anyone who has a regular run, solo or group, and who is looking for more partners, to let us know. We will publish those runs in the SpliTimes each month, and will look into putting them in a section on the club’s web-page. Give us the day(s) of the week, where, when and con-tact information. Also, indicate if the group: goes a specifi c distance, is training for something like a marathon, is targeted towards faster runners or the general pace, runs year-round, etc. If you would like to just have the information shared on a one-to-one basis we won’t publish it, but instead just provide the contact info (telephone or email) for those individuals looking for partners.
If you’re interested, please email the information about your run to the club’s Membership Chairman, Jim Moragne, at [email protected], or call him at (315) 794-4034.
Thursday Night Social RunsThe Thursday night social runs continue, starting from The Fitness Mill at 5:45 PM. The Fitness Mill provides showers, refl ective vests and locker room. After the run we meet at the Black Cat for food, drinks and stimulating conversation. All are welcome to attend even if you don’t run.

SupplementsBy: Dr. Timothy J. DelMedico*
Spring is a good time to assess your nutritional intake and make a few changes. Even if you think that you have a perfect diet, I can assure you that you do not. Fruits and vegetables these days are becoming more and more nutritionally void of essential vitamins and minerals that our bodies require to function well. The soil that they are grown in is becoming more contami-nated as the years pass.
If you compare fruits and vegetables of today to those grown even 50 years ago, you will see that with the increased use of pesticides, GMO (genetically modified) products, and leaching of minerals have destroyed their nutritional content. Obviously, organic foods are better nutrition-ally than non-organic but even if you eat totally organic, there will still be some compounds/vitamins that your body will need.
I suggest supplementation of four main dietary supplements to “fill in the blanks” left by even the most discerning eater. The first one is a good multivitamin. Yes, the brand matters as well. A high quality multi-vitamin will contain the essentials that you need in their most active form. This allows the substances to be readily absorbed and distributed in your body.
Fish oil capsules are easy to find and easy to take. Most people are lacking in Omega 3 fatty acids. The benefits of these compounds are far reaching and still being discovered every year. Everything from heart health, skin and nails, and joint aches can be affected by this awesome supplement. You can get this from your diet as well, but it is easier in gelcap form. Again, you want a high quality fish oil. The lower priced ones generally contain more mercury, as they are concentrated from many fish. You want a pure, filtered fish oil from a reputable source.
Probiotics are next. There are some doctors that believe that health starts in the digestive sys-tem. There are billions of good and bad bacteria that flourish in your gut. Probiotics ensure that there are more good than bad. They have even been shown to boost your immune sys-tem. You can increase your good bacteria by eating greek yogurt as well.
The last of my “big 4” supplements is Vitamin D3. Just like fish oil, more is being discovered about the benefits of Vitamin D3 every year. Vitamin D3 helps calcium get into the bones to prevent osteoporosis. Vitamin D3 has also recently been shown to be low in every case of de-pression that is diagnosed. Here in central NY, where we have a small amount of sunny days, especially in winter, people have dangerously low levels. Please supplement your diet with D3.
If you have questions about dosage or want suggestions on brands, please check with your doctor. Most Chiropractors are experts in nutrition as well, as it is taught extensively in chiro-practic college. Again, it is becoming more and more apparent the longer that I am in private practice (12 years) that the human body needs five main components to truly be healthy: a good diet (with supplements), plenty of rest, daily exercise, adequate hydration, and a healthy functioning nervous system to regulate it all.
