COMMON SENSE MEDIA PARENT PRESENTATIONS

Thanks to a generous donation by Fremont Unified Student Store (FUSS), Fremont Unified is partnering with Common Sense Media this school year on a 4-part Community Education Series on Digital Citizenship, technology trends, and online safety. Headquartered in San Francisco, Common Sense is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. Each one-hour evening workshop will cover diverse topics and is open to all parents, guardians, caregivers, friends, and families who want to learn more about the world our children are living in, so we can help them navigate through it more successfully and healthfully.

Dates and topics: FLYER (pdf) The first workshop is coming up next week, Tuesday, December 4 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Professional Development Center at the District Office. The topic: Help! My child is addicted to technology!

HOW DO I HELP MY CHILD?

I hope your conferences were informative and helpful, and you have a good understanding of how your child is doing so far this year. You may be wondering what you can do to help your child do better on their weekly reading tests? I hope you all received the letter we sent out prior to conferences talking about our new English Language Arts program.

We don’t expect mastery of grade level standards until the end of the year, so if your child is not where you expected them to be, don’t worry. There is still time to grow. Please familiarize yourself with your child’s grade level standards. The tests are based on grade level standards. You can find the Priority Standards for English Language Arts here and Math Priority Standards here.

Understanding the standards will give you a better idea of how students are being assessed. Tests are only one way a student is assessed. Teachers also use class work and informal observations to determine a student’s grade.

6TH GRADE MATH PLACEMENT TEST PARENT INFORMATION MEETING

The Washington/Centerville Attendance Area parent information session will be held on Thursday, January 10 from 6-7:30 in the Centerville gym. Please see the attached flyer for more information.

GATE Information 2018-2019

Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) provides support for gifted and talented (GATE) students through differentiated instruction. We believe that differentiated instruction not only serves the needs of our exceptional students, but also enhances the entire educational program for all students.

All 3rd grade students will have the opportunity to be tested for GATE. The process is automatic and does not require parents to initiate it. Any student whose parent does not want their child to participate in testing must submit an opt-out form to the Assessment and Accountability Department, 4210 Technology Drive, Room 280, Fremont, California 94538, no later than January 15, 2018. The request may be in the form of email, letter, or the optional form available in the district office. Requests submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.

GATE testing for 3rd grade students will occur between February 4 – February 15, 2019. Students in 4th or 5th grade who have not taken the GATE assessment at FUSD have the option to take the GATE assessment. These might be students who are new to the district or who were opted out of GATE testing in 3rd grade. If your 4th or 5th grade child is eligible for GATE testing this year and you would like them to be assessed, please submit an opt-in form to the Assessment and Accountability Department by January 15, 2019. Fifth grade is the last opportunity for students to be assessed with the GATE test. 4th and 5th grade students will be tested between February 19-March 15, 2019.

Students in 5th or 6th grade who were not

identified in an earlier grade may be

considered for GATE identification through

the professional judgement

process. Teachers and/or parents may

nominate students. A completed Nomination

Form must be submitted to the school

Principal between November 1, 2018 and

January 15, 2019. Additional information

and forms are available in the student’s

school office and may also be downloaded

from the Elementary Education Department

website.

FEELING SICK?

Just a reminder that if your child is not feeling well, it’s OK to keep him/her home from school. Kids who come to school sick get others around them sick too, including teachers! Any illness related absences are excused and work can be made up at a later time with no penalty.

YOUNG COMPOSERS’ CONTEST

The Fremont Unified School District’s 2018-

19 Young Composers’ Contest is underway!!!

Students in grades 4-6, are encouraged to

participate. The Contest Rules, including

Entry Form can be picked up in the office.

THANK YOU TEACHERS!

Parents, do you have a quick moment to send a quick thank you note or email to a staff member?

Expressing gratitude can fill your “cup” and our staff member’s “cup”. Positive connections between home and school foster mutual respect, in turn creating a rich learning environment. If you have some time and want to send your child’s teacher or another staff member a quick note, I’m sure it would brighten their day. If you need an email address of any staff member on campus, please feel free to contact me and I can give it to you.
