Park Street Church | ˘e Lord’s Day, August
Transcript of Park Street Church | ˘e Lord’s Day, August
2
is morning’s liturgy is identical to the prayer service that Park Street Church conducts
via Zoom ve days a week (weekdays) at parkstreet.org/morningprayer. is service,
drawn from our historic traditions as part of the Western church, proceeds without undue
announcement. e word “liturgy” means “work of the people,” and the congregation plays
an active role in this liturgy. Instructions are indicated by the traditional symbol ¶, called
a “pilcrow.” e postures for prayer include kneeling, re(ecting the many biblical
invitations to kneel before God and even to fall upon our faces in his presence.
When worship was translated into the vernacular during the Reformation, the familiar
Latin titles for Psalms and other standard texts were retained; for instance, we refer to the
“Gloria Patri” not the “Glory Be to the Father;” some of these titles are used here.
e traditional designations “Opening Voluntary” and “Closing Voluntary” convey that
these pieces are part of the service, not outside of it, for the purposes of this liturgy that
otherwise has little music (due to the temporary suppression of corporate singing).
OPENING VOLUNTARY
Music is played upon the organ or by the musicians, preparing us in body and mind to
enter into the Lord’s worship.
¶ e Leader begins the service with the following sentence from Scripture.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be always
acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. Psalm 19.14
CONFESSION OF SIN
¶ e Leader says to the People
Dearly beloved, the Scriptures teach us to acknowledge our many sins and
o2enses, not concealing them from our heavenly Father, but confessing them
3
with humble and obedient hearts that we may obtain forgiveness by his
in3nite goodness and mercy. We ought at all times humbly to acknowledge
our sins before Almighty God, but especially when we come together in his
presence to give thanks for the great bene3ts we have received at his hands,
to declare his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for
ourselves and on behalf of others, those things which are necessary for our
life and our salvation. erefore, draw near with me to the throne of
heavenly grace.
¶ Silence is kept. e people kneel. e Leader and People say
Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.
We have oended against your holy laws.
We have left undone those things which we ought to have done,
and we have done those things which we ought not to have done;
and apart from your grace, there is no health in us.
O Lord, have mercy upon us.
Spare all those who confess their faults.
Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to
all people in Christ Jesus our Lord.
And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.
¶ e people kneeling, the Leader alone stands, and says
Grant to your faithful people, merciful Lord, pardon and peace; that we may
be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

People O come, let us adore him.
O come, let us sing unto the LORD;
let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving
and show ourselves glad in him with psalms.

and the heights of the hills are his also.
+e sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands prepared the dry land.
O come, let us worship and fall down,
and kneel before the LORD our Maker.
5
For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand. Psalm 95.1–7

Exultate Deo
Sing aloud to God our strength;
shout for joy to the God of Jacob!
2 Raise a song; sound the tambourine,
the sweet lyre with the harp.
3 Blow the trumpet at the new moon,
at the full moon, on our feast day.
4 For it is a statute for Israel,
a rule of the God of Jacob.
5 He made it a decree in Joseph
when he went out over the land of Egypt.
I hear a language I had not known:
6 “I relieved your shoulder of the burden;
your hands were freed from the basket.
7 In distress you called, and I delivered you;
I answered you in the secret place of thunder;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.
6
8 Hear, O my people, while I admonish you!
O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
9 ere shall be no strange god among you;
you shall not bow down to a foreign god.
10 I am the LORD your God,
who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide, and I will 2ll it.
11 “But my people did not listen to my voice;
Israel would not submit to me.
12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts,
to follow their own counsels.
13 Oh, that my people would listen to me,
that Israel would walk in my ways!
14 I would soon subdue their enemies
and turn my hand against their foes.
15 ose who hate the LORD would cringe toward him,
and their fate would last for ever.
16 But he would feed you with the 2nest of the wheat,
and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”
All Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
e Gloria Patri, or “lesser Doxology,” is traditionally sung or recited at the end of psalms,
in order to place them in an explicitly Trinitarian frame.

FIRST LESSON
Deuteronomy 4.9‒20
Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things
your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them
to your children and to their children after them. 10Remember the day you stood
before the LORD your God at Horeb, when he said to me, “Assemble the people
before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live
in the land and may teach them to their children.” 11You came near and stood at the
foot of the mountain while it blazed with 3re to the very heavens, with black clouds
and deep darkness. 12en the LORD spoke to you out of the 3re. You heard the
sound of words but saw no form; there was only a voice. 13He declared to you his
covenant, the Ten Commandments, which he commanded you to follow and then
wrote them on two stone tablets. 14And the LORD directed me at that time to teach
you the decrees and laws you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the
Jordan to possess.
15You saw no form of any kind the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the
3re. erefore watch yourselves very carefully, 16so that you do not become corrupt
and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man
or a woman, 17or like any animal on earth or any bird that Fies in the air, 18or like
any creature that moves along the ground or any 3sh in the waters below. 19And
when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars—all the
heavenly array—do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping
things the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. 20But as
for you, the LORD took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace, out of
Egypt, to be the people of his inheritance, as you now are.

¶ All stand and respond with this song of praise
ECCE, DEUS
Surely, it is God who saves me
Surely, it is God who saves me;
I will trust in him and not be afraid.
For the LORD is my stronghold and my sure defense,
and he will be my Savior.
+erefore you shall draw water with rejoicing
from the springs of salvation.
And on that day you shall say,
Give thanks to the LORD and call upon his Name;
Make his deeds known among the peoples;
see that they remember that his Name is exalted.
Sing the praises of the LORD, for he has done great things,
and this is known in all the world.
Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy,
for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 12.2–6
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

SECOND LESSON
Hebrews 1.1‒4
In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in
various ways, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he
appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3e Son is
9
the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all
things by his powerful word. After he had provided puri3cation for sins, he sat down
at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4So he became as much superior to the
angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

BENEDICTUS
e Song of Zechariah
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior,
born of the house of his servant David.
+rough his holy prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.
+is was the oath he swore to our father Abraham,
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
Free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
To give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.
10
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1.68–79
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
