Morning has broken like the first morning; Blackbird has spoken like the first bird.

Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them springing fresh from the Word!

Sweet the rain's new fall sunlit from heaven; Like the first dewfall on the first grass.

Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden; Sprung in completeness where His feet pass.

Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning Born of the one light Eden saw play!

Praise with elation, praise every morning; God's recreation of the new day!

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of grace, love, and communion, we confess that we have failed to love you with all our hearts, souls, and minds; and to love our neighbor as ourselves. We ignore your commandments, stray from your way, and follow other gods. Have mercy on us. Forgive our sins and raise us to new life that we may serve you faithfully and give honor to your holy name.

A time of silent, personal prayer.

RESPONSE (“Follow Me” by John Denver)

Follow me where I go, what I do and who I know. Make it part of you to be a part of Me. Follow Me up and down, all the way and all around. Take my hand and say you’ll follow Me.

(repeat)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

PASSING OF THE PEACE Leader: May the peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you.

CHILDREN’S SERMON Recognition of Church School Teachers and Staff

PREPARING FOR THE WORD “Ancient Words” DeShazo Words of life, words of hope, give us strength, help us cope. In this world where e’er we roam, ancient words will guide us home. Ancient words, ever true, changing me and changing you,

We have come with open hearts. O let the ancient words impart.

READING FROM THE SCRIPTURES Matthew 28:16-20

SERMON “1,2,3” Rev. Jim Faile

*HYMN “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven” Lyte

Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven; To His feet thy tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Who like me, His praise should sing?

Come and worship, come and worship, Praise the everlasting King!

Praise Him for his grace and favor. To our fathers in distress; Praise him, still the same forever, Slow to chide and swift to bless.

Come and worship, come and worship. Glorious in his faithfulness.

God our father tends and spares us, Well our feeble frame he knows In his hands he gently bears us. Rescues us from all our foes.

Come and worship, come and worship. Widely as his mercy goes

Angels, help us to adore Him, Ye behold Him face to face; Sun and moon, bow down before Him; Dwellers all in time and space,

Come and worship, come and worship. Praise with us the God of grace!

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from the Brief Statement of Faith) We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by

grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us to-gether with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!”

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Annual Picnic hosted by the Deacons

Allen Park Presbyterian Church ….in the Heart of Allen Park

It’s Summertime!

by Interim Pastor Jim Faile

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy. Or so we are promised. June brings graduations and baccalaureates, end of the regular school year from preschool to grade 12. Also Father’s Day, the High School Mission Trip to Stony Point NY. July brings camps at Wakanda, August brings Hero Central, a new version of Vacation Bible School in the evenings.

Summer brings a more casual worship and fewer church meetings (yay!). Not to mention vacations, weekends up north, family reunions and other opportunities to get away from it all.

Life at Allen Park Presbyterian Church goes on as well. Sunday services continue each week at 8:30 a.m. in the chapel, a brief service and communion followed by an earlier start to the Sabbath day.

Worship in the Sanctuary remains scheduled for 10 a.m. The Third Service and the Thrive Band will take a break until the fall. I invite and encourage all to attend any of these lively services throughout the year and experience all that God is doing and the different ways of giving thanks and praise. Please

remember that expenses continue through the summer months; the church counts on your faithful giving all year round.

The life of the church will continue this summer – much needed repairs and maintenance are underway, thanks to the faithful efforts of the Trustees. The Worship Committee continues the search for an interim choir director. There will be a full financial audit of the church accounts, and the Mission Self-Study team will be continuing their work including the results of the New Beginnings Study in preparing a document that accurately describes the life mission and ministry of this church. When approved by Session and the Presbytery’s Committee on Ministry, the next phase of the search process for a called pastor can begin.

And Deacons, Session, Trustees and committees will be getting ready for the new program year starting in the fall.

My family and I will be away on vacation from June 27 through July 12. Pastoral coverage will be available with Michelle and other area Presbyterian clergy.

I wish you all a most pleasant summer of refreshment and renewal in body, mind, and spirit!

“Equip and Empower”

by Michelle James, Associate Pastor

And now summer’s upon us! How did that happen? School’s will close for the summer, families will head out for vacation, cottages up north will be inhabited and the sun will be shining! That’s what summer does for us. Summer’s arrival doesn’t mean summer will enjoy all those things. We will, but summer enables it all to happen!

Your church staff is much like summer. We’re not the ones who “do church” for you, but instead we’re the ones who enable you to get out and “be the church.” While we don’t teach classes, we can help you get the word out. While we don’t run committee meetings, we can help with set up if you need it. While we don’t fix the meals for ChristNet or Fifth Sundays, we can reserve the kitchen or the bus for you, and even find a driver if you’re not a trained APPC bus driver.

Our job as your church staff is to help you be the best disciple, the most faithful follower of Christ that you can be! Our job is to equip you for your work and empower you to get it done. How? Just call, text or email! You can even meet us face-to-face if you prefer. All you need to ask, and we’ll be happy to help.

Be sure to send us your meeting dates, room or vehicle reservation requests, or equipment needs, and we’ll get them where they need to go and see that you’re all set. Need a pastoral visit? Be sure to let us know and we’re happy to visit, but we can’t if we aren’t aware of the need. Just like you, we’re here to serve! Just let us know how we can best equip you for your work and empower you in your ministry!

PS – We’ve put an online reservation form up on our website to equip you to make your reservations! Check it out at: appc.us/forms
