FIRST SATURDAY 8:00 AM HEALING MASS

During our monthly healing mass on the First Saturday of the Month at 8:00 am at the St. Barbara Wor-

ship Site Chapel, we will have the Sacrament of Anoint-ing and pray the Marian Litany. One of the questions people ask is who can receive the Anointing? This sacrament is not only for those who are dying, but is for all who are seriously ill. Are you suffering from seri-ous illness, chronic pain, or the debilitating effects of ad-vancing age? Are you preparing for surgery or recover-ing from the effects of surgery? Come and receive this sacrament. Let Jesus heal you.

FIRST FRIDAY HOLY HOUR AT 7:00 PM

Our First Friday devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus takes place at the St. Therese Worship Site with the praying

of the Divine Mercy Chaplet and time for silent meditation and benediction. All are welcome.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of:

EDWARD GLABICKI Husband of B. Glabicki

Ed was a valued lifelong member of St. Barbara Church. He was an usher and was active in the Parish Council, the Finance Council, the Holy Name Society, the Bingo, and he volunteered at all events in the parish. Please remember B. in your prayers.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

THANKS AND WELCOME

Our School faculty had a day of recollection on Friday Aug. 23rd praying and learning more about St. Mother Teresa’s life. They spent some valuable time visiting St. Therese Worship Site and the panels of St. Mother Teresa’s life. It was a fruitful time shared by all. Thanks to our entire faculty for their commitment. We wish them a wonderful year. Our Parish catechists had their annual retreat on Sat. Aug. 24th. Their theme was on St. Mother Teresa’s life too. Thanks to all of them for their dedication to our Religious Education Program and special thanks to Tom Howard for leading the day. This past Tuesday was the first day of school. We had a prayer service at both our St. Barbara campus and St. Therese campus. I was filled with hope to see our children smiling and eager to come back to school after a relaxing summer. We wish them a successful year.

HUMILITY Today’s readings invite us to reflect on the importance of humility. “My child, conduct your affairs with hu-mility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts. Humble yourself more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God.” These words from the book of Sirach can be very helpful for our spiritual life. They remind us how humility can lead us closer to God.

HEAVENLY REWARD by Sister Caritas

During the holiday season around Christmas there are many gift giving opportunities. We also give gifts at birthday times. Here people give gifts at Chinese New Year. Sometimes the gifts given are given to receive a gift in return. There is also sometimes a comparison saying, “I gave a better gift than I received.” The Gospel today speaks of being humble. It reminds us not to seek the first place of honor or another maybe more important than you will arrive and then you will have to be embarrassed and give up your first place. Some people seek to be with the rich, the famous and the powerful and those in positions of importance. Saint Mother Teresa was often with those people in her lifetime, but it was not what she sought. Saint Mother Tere-sa sought the poor and those who could not give her anything in return except gratitude. Saint Mother Teresa heard the call of Jesus, “Rather when you have a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. Your reward will be great in heaven.” Give out of pure generosity. Jesus calls us, as does the example of Saint Mother Teresa, to serve and seek out the poor and those in need of our help. Being among the poor, the helpless and homeless is to be in the special presence of God. The poor cannot reward us but they have to depend on God not on themselves. If we are willing to be among the home-less and poor we will know God’s presence in a special way. We will be evangelized by them. They cannot give us gifts or a share of power or honor, but they can be the means by which God makes Himself known and experienced. Meet God among the poor. Come and see!

Pope Francis says that humility becomes a lost virtue in our modern world. People are so focused on them-selves and they forget about others. He uses C.S. Lewis’ definition of humility to remind us what true humility is by stating: “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” Humility helps us to be mindful of others and God. It helps us to know that everything we have in life is a gift from God and we need to be grateful to others and to God. A powerful example of humility is St. Mother Teresa, our Parish’s new patron. Her life was about God and about others. As stated the last two Sundays, I invite you to spend some time this weekend with the panels of St. Mother Teresa’s life at the entrance area of St. Barbara Church and allow St. Mother Teresa to inspire us. Let’s reflect on how renewal in her life journey serves as a perfect example for our own personal and commu-nity renewal. On Sept. 5th, for the first time our community will celebrate the Feast of St. Mother Teresa at our St. Barbara Worship Site with Bishop John Manz and the Missionaries of Charity! I warmly invite you to join us for this special celebration and I also encourage you to extend our St. Barbara and St. Therese Worship Sites’ tradi-tional hospitality to all of our guests and visitors on that day. This indeed is a historic day for our faith com-munity. St. Mother Teresa, pray for me and for our faith community.

Fr. Francis

Life Chain 2019 is an opportunity to stand up and be counted among the pro-life majority as we join our hearts at silent, prayerful witness against the “procedure” that takes the life of the unborn while leaving a crippling scar on the heart and life of the mother. Stand with us on

Sunday, October 6th, as we prayerfully let our neighbors know that abortion hurts women, too. Our Life Chain will join over 1900 other locations across North America in a silent, loving witness to end abortion. Please join the St. Barbara Knights of Columbus as we attend this life-saving event on 159th Street between Harlem Avenue and 80th Avenue. To allow time for distribution of signs, plan to arrive by 2:00 pm.
